Join us in Adventure! A message from the Assistant Director Since the early 70s, the staff of the Outdoor Adventures Program have made it their chief purpose to embolden others in search of adventure. Whether making it to the top of one of our climbing walls, a personal commitment to commute by bike, or finding the edge of your comfort zone on an adventure trip, we’re here to help you make it happen. If you need gear, instruction, or community, we have you covered. We are the stories from which memories are made and the moments from which lifelong skills are learned. We embrace education, enjoyment, and escape, and we’re here to enhance your experience while at Nebraska. While you may have come for the campus, we challenge you to get out and explore the outdoor opportunities the Great Plains have to offer. Adventure doesn’t have to be a plane ride away, nor does it require great expense. With our resources and your drive, we can help you find your local epic right here in Nebraska. Douglas Copeland says, “Adventure without risk is merely Disneyland.” We hope you’ve come to UNL to truly push what you can be in this next chapter. We encourage you to take that risk, put yourself out there, and join others in this adventure. Cheers,

Jordan Messerer

+ EDUCATION Adventure invites us to be more fully engaged in the human experience and challenges our preconceived notions of ourselves and others. Regardless of the outcome, adventure offers a powerful tool for learning in its many forms, creating an aptitude for creative thinking and problem solving.

+ ESCAPE In the midst of adventure, we are able to leave behind the stress of life on campus and in the city. With that freedom, we find the ability to connect— with ourselves, others, and the outdoors. These moments of meaningful escape leave us energized and inspired to return to the responsibilities of daily life.

+ ENJOYMENT Take a climb up one of our routes, explore a nearby lake on a rented kayak, or share a meal in a faraway campground, and you’ll understand what we mean by “enjoyment.” These experiences inject us into the present moment, allowing pure, unadulterated bliss to take over.

History The journey began in 1971, when a few UNL Campus Recreation employees felt the inspiration to run an overnight canoe trip down the Elkhorn River. The UNL Outdoor Adventures (OA) Program was born. Over time, the program evolved to include the off-site challenge course, equipment rental, a climbing wall, and academic classes. In the many decades since, OA has offered hundreds of adventure trips and clinics ranging from expeditions across the United States, to foreign destinations such as Nepal, Australia, and Mexico. In May of 2014, the OA Program continued to grow with its very own standalone Outdoor Adventures Center, a 13,000 sq. ft. facility that fosters all components of the program: a full service climbing center, bike shop, equipment rental service, a homebase for adventure trips, and educational classroom. While OA has undergone many changes throughout the course of its history, the mission to cultivate meaningful adventure experiences within its community remains true and constant at the heart of the staff, trip leaders and participants who find that living a life far from ordinary can be the most rewarding.

Registration Deadline: Monday, February 27

Registration Deadline: Monday, February 27

Explore the surprisingly quality rock in south central Oklahoma. Yeah, don’t knock it til you try it. Take in the views as you climb above the Colorado-esque “Narrows’ and the top of Mount Scott. Put your skills to the test as you take on a multi-pitch climb on one of the days of the trip.

One word best describes the canyons of West Texas: remote. If you’re seeking a little adventure, you won’t find a better alternative this Spring Break. Spend up to 7 days on the river, no resupplies or stops at restaurants in between the put in and the take out. Paddle in the tight canyons forged by iconic watersheds of the remote desert and explore side canyons or remains of villages long past. Find something worth telling stories about when you return from the break. Given the remoteness and challenging rapids of this trip, participants must be in good physical condition and have a positive state mind.

#ExploreLocalNE “Here in the Great Plains, the beauty is every bit as remarkable as the mountains or the Grand Canyon, but it doesn’t knock your socks off at first glance. You have to linger and spend some time. It’s like getting to know someone— you keep peeling the layers away and getting to know it better. Anytime I would come home, I’d look at our sunrises and sunsets— the openness and expanse of the landscape and the people is something I always missed after I left.” -Michael Forsberg, Former Outdoor Adventure Trip Leader (1987–89) Renown Conservation Photographer

“One year ago, I went rock climbing outdoors for the first time. It’s tough to explain the immediate sense of home I felt with a brunch of strangers in nature and how oddly calming it is to be focused on working your way up a cliff face or rock formation. Climbing has helped bring me out of my timid shell, and I’ve become much more open-minded. I’ve met so many awesome people who are incredibly open to teach, talk, camp, climb, and just be outside. I can’t wait to continue to learn, face fears, and explore more. A huge thanks to all you Nebraska climbers who are willing to drive a distance for sometimes just a day of climbing.” -Emily Beiermann, UNL Student

“To be able to share this feeling with others, a feeling too specific to accurately put to words, is what fuels me. To be in a state of pure experience — water hitting the face, paddling from one side of the river to the other — is my favorite part of life. This is what paddling has given to me: the ability to feel the natural flow, my natural flow. ” -Lauren Kraemer, Trip Leader

#ExploreLocalNE

46 | UNL Outdoor Adventures crec.unl.edu/outdoor

“At some point in the past, I recall Nebraska’s natural beauty taking me by surprise, thinking that this stunning vista or that winding double track road was somehow out of place, remarkable because it was so unNebraskan. It’s been some time now my understanding and sense of place has shifted, having realized that these awe-inspiring moments are actually a better representation of Nebraska than is the tired narrative that the Great Plains are boring, flat, and lifeless. My daydreams are now filled with the openness of the Sandhills, the high plains ecology of the Pine Ridge, and the tight, cool canyons of the Niobrara River Valley. There is so much unspoiled natural wonder in Nebraska, so many trails, tracks, and overlooks, so many hidden camps along winding rivers, that I have a hard time leaving the state to look for adventure. Sure, there are amazing experiences waiting in the mountains and the desert, but when left with the choice, I’ll always pick the open plains. For me, the bicycle is the ultimate tool with which to explore the unique landscapes of our state. Quieter and slower than a motorized vehicle, you actually get a chance to approach wildlife and absorb the landscapes around you, while covering far more ground in a day than you can on foot. Multi-day bikepacking is the unique intersection of cycling, wildlife viewing, camping, and back country exploration. It’s my doorway into the open freedom of the high plains. ” -Onion Velo

#ExploreLocalNE With more river miles than any other state and arguably the best sunsets in the world, there is no better place to explore the outdoors than right here in the Great Plains. Learn what it really means to “home” when you connect to the vast prairies and wide open skies, where there is always plenty of space to grow. At the Outdoor Adventures Center, our goal is to help you accomplish this. This map highlights some of the many opportunities to get outside within a short, two-hour commute from campus. Whether you want to enjoy the many bike trails or discover regional lakes, we have the equipment and expertise you need to get there. This year, skip the long drive west and explore local, right here in Nebraska.

“OA has really high quality products, that are always well maintained and serviced. I can always count on the items I rent to keep me warm, dry or just to perform like they should because they are of great quality and have been taken care of.” -Matan Gill

CHALLENGE COURSE

50 | UNL Outdoor Adventures crec.unl.edu/outdoor

“Changing paradigms— this is what happens at the UNL Challenge Course. I have been working challenge courses for the past 20 years and thought I had seen it all until I found myself assisting with this course. The wide range of groups that come out to the course provide fresh experiences every time. An experience on the challenge course can take a group of disconnected teens and turn them into a formative team, or take a champion sports team and help them bond and excel in new ways. Even as instructors, we learn from the groups we work with. Regardless if you come for a half day or a full day, a group will leave transformed for the better.” -Nick Cordray, UNL Challenge Course Instructor
