We love franchising here at Franchise Magazine, but in all honesty, who doesn’t?! If you need more reason to love it though, this edition I have listed the 27 top reasons to get into franchising whether it be as a franchisor or franchisee and if that isn’t enough to make you love it, Kylie our editor has debunked some of the most common franchising myths in her article. You’re sure to love franchising as much as we do after that!

Quest strengthens market leadership with their 150th property Quest Serviced Apartments opened its 150th property in Breakfast Creek this month, a significant milestone in the expansion of the network, which now sees it widely recognised as the market leader in Australia.

Less than 55% of retail service staff go out of their way to make customers feel welcome According to new data released by Australian consumer research company, Mystery Customer Pty Limited, it has been found that only 55% of retail service staff went out of their way to make customers feel welcome when they entered their stores.

• 15% of customers were not served within a reasonable time frame

The study which examined the service standards of retail service staff across a variety of industry sectors through mystery customers visits assessed 154 retail outlets over a six month period. A total of 554 audits were undertaken to measure staff performance against a broad spectrum of service issues ranging from the time it takes staff to greet customers when they enter the store through to whether or not they provided customers with the sufficient information to enable them to make the correct purchase decision.

It was further pointed out by Mr Jarmyn that in a market where customer experience has become a key distinguishing feature between businesses selling similar products “it is vital that frontline service staff engage with customers in a meaningful way to gain their custom”

• 38% of staff could not adequately explain the products features and benefits to the consumer

• Ensure that frontline staff are well trained on the key benefits and features of the products and services that you offer as well as how they might be used by different customers.

• 60% of staff do not attempt to close the sale.

It is also important that companies reward front line service staff who go the extra mile to provide exceptional customer service.

When staff are recognised for their efforts it comes across a lot more genuinely than when they are only doing it because they are told to.

10,700 visitors and 131 exhibitors (233 booths from 9 countries) at the Vietnam International Shop and Franchise Show 2012, held at SECC, Ho Chi Minch City, from November 1st – 3rd, benefitted from a range of concurrent events designed by event organizer Coex to optimize participator business success. In response to requests from a small group of friends needing help to create art The Arts Emporium concept was born and the first Arts Emporium was established in Newcastle, Australia, in 2005. Since this date, The Arts Emporium has grown into one of the region’s premier teaching studios, with the youngest client being just 4 years old and the oldest, arriving on scooter, at 95 years of age.

The Arts Emporium has helped every one of their clients think differently, see differently, be creative and make art in a way that satisfies their eye, head and heart and enhances their lives in innumerable ways.

Getting To Know You If you had to describe your personality in a few words, what would it be?

This is a family business and in combination we are highly creative in music, dance, drama, writing and art.

What inspired your business idea?

Having a combination of good teaching skills and creativity.

How did you know that franchising was right for your business and what ultimately influenced your decision?

We felt that this filled a niche market for those who are creative, who want a small home-based or community based business, who wanted to be able to shape their time, their skills and their business to suit their lifestyle. There are a lot of creative people who would love to be able to find a vocation where they can express themselves, pass on their skills and knowledge, earn some money doing so and also make a positive contribution to their community and having all these combinations and potentials makes this is an extraordinary opportunity to franchise.

What previous experience if any did you have in the franchise or business industry before franchising?

We’d had business experience, but franchising has been a new experience.

Getting down to business What materials and knowledge did you have before beginning to franchise?

We had formal teacher training, a lot of teaching experience and experience across the Arts – all of which we needed to do the hard-yards of establishing the business and the Franchise, but now we have ironed out the wrinkles for our Franchisees so that they have all the materials and knowledge pre-packaged and as ‘painless’ as possible!

How long did it take to develop and set up your business and how did you begin promotion?

We have been operating for over seven years ( which, in the arts is an absolute miracle)… so we are very good at what we do!

How did you go about seeking advice on starting to franchise your business? Talk us through how you got started.

We talked about it for a very long time, read a great deal, consulted with the professional business people around us – from accountants to legal to other business owners and then started to look for someone to help us through the process of establishing a Franchise. We contacted Mary and Nick of Franchise Central and the rest as they say is history!

What was the very first task you had to do as franchisor?

Make sure our processes were in good order.

How overwhelmed were you initially when setting up your franchise?

We’re pretty thorough and level-headed but it was still an arduous process.

Tell us about some of the expectations you began with. Have they been met?

We had no expectations – except that it would be hard work.

And that expectation was met……

Did you have a mentor?

The business Who is the target market for your franchise?

As we have several streams within this franchise it can cater for creative people, from the highly trained and highly skilled who may want to establish a large enterprise to the crafts-person who might be raising a family and wants to shape their homebased business to suit their lifestyle and family needs.

How many units of your franchise are there in Australia?

We are baby new. We have had a lot of enquiry which we are currently fielding but this ‘newness’ needn’t be interpreted as ‘inexperienced’ just a ‘ground-floor’ opportunity!

Have you gone international yet? If so, where are you based? If not, do you intend to expand internationally?

We do have plans to conquer the world…but not just yet!

Running of the business Who supported you throughout your journey of franchising your business?

As a family business we supported each other.

What are the short and long term goals you seek to achieve for your franchise?

Short-term we would like to establish some delightful creative hubs that are offering fabulous, positive, enriching creative opportunities for learning and entertainment in their communities.

Long-term we would like these to become a linked, innovative and creative force so we can enrich our culture and contribute to a creative future for Australia. …..…nothing like setting a grand philosophical goal is there!?

Can you tell us about one of the most significant moments which have contributed to the success of your franchise?

Having the courage to begin.

What has been the most challenging aspect of being a franchisor?

How did you overcome this?

Making sure our program was in good order so that our franchisees would enjoy the benefits of a quality business.

What are some of the lessons you have learned?

Everything is much harder, more expensive and takes much longer than you would ever imagine…which again is a benefit to franchisees in that they skip a lot of the harassment (but then will be well-warned and well-prepared by the franchisor in what to expect in their own business).

Franchising a business What would you say are the benefits of having franchised your business?

Being able to offer an absolutely unique, affordable opportunity to creative people that otherwise would not exist. We are a ‘first’ in Australia.

What do you perceive to be the pitfalls of franchising?

Unrealistic expectations and developing franchisees too fast (and not thoroughly enough) to do the franchise credit and minimise the potential problems.

Franchisees for your business Describe what your ideal franchisee would be like? Their personality traits, experience and attributes etc.

We could offer a wide range of opportunities from, for example: a home-based business for an at-home creative mum; or a community-based business for some young creative partners; or an art ‘school’ run by a highly qualified, experienced (possibly retired) art teacher….so our flexibility and the variety of programs and possibilities is astounding and limited only to the resources, skills, personal qualities and ambitions of the franchisee.

However, because our franchisees would be working with people (and possibly children) from all walks of life, the qualities that are ‘absolute musts’ are: creativity (i.e. demonstrated skills in arts and/ or crafts.. and we take quite a wide view on what ‘creativity and skills’ we will consider); personal trustworthiness and integrity (for example, if you choose to work with children we will undertake police record checks and we take both child safety and our childrens’ education extremely seriously); personal warmth and good communication; and a high degree of common sense and good organization. As you can see, this is a ‘people’ business which requires good and creative people to run it well and professionally.

What are three major aspects a franchisee should consider before signing up with a franchisor?

Whist some believe franchising is only for food and retail outlets, others believe their only shot at great success in franchising is by owning a McDonalds or 7-Eleven then get disheartened by the follow-up misconception that they do not have enough capital to invest in a franchise at all, all untrue!
