the RIPPLE digital fabrication class
The objective of this work was the introduction of the subtractive 3D numeric fabrication processes, using a 3-axis CNC MILLING machine. Each group of 2 students had the chance to work directly with the machine, use the software Rhino Cam to write the machine’s instructions, and oversee his/her job. The intention of the assignment was to critically evaluate the possibility to alter the fabrication parameters of the CNC machine, to produce a specific material effect in a given material (medium-density polyurethane foam). Students understood consider the implications of milling with different tools and/or diverse tooling trajectories. One important detail was the fact that we were calculating the time spent at the mill, in order to evaluate how we manage to produce great material effects, while realistically considering the economical factors that would affect a real architectural application.

the MATRIX digital fabrication class The objective of assignment was to introduce students to the RAPID PROTOTYPING numeric fabrication processes, focusing on the technique of printing with a 3D PRINTER machine. We had the chance to work directly with the machine, use the specific software to write the machine’s instructions, oversee his/her job, remove the printed models from the printer, clean and finish them with a hardening solution. In terms of design, the intention of the assignment is to produce a series of 3D printed models that can be set next to each other in multiple ways, constructing an unexpected ensemble (a MATRIX) for the whole class. For that matter, students were be provided with a simple template, to be used as a common departure point for all their individual models. The template, inscribed within a 6 x 6 x 6 cms cube, contains the basic reference geometry that must be respected by all, in order to assure the future connection between all parts (cells).

This project introduced theoretical and practical principles for embedding computation into physical space. We looked at how information and communication technologies are disappearing into our surrounding spaces, how architecture might be considered an operating system, and how micro controllers are becoming part of everyday objects. While the practical exercises deal with domestic spaces, at the end of the seminar we comprehended networks as integral elements, and not as additions, of spaces, buildings, cities and territories. We started with a wide look at networks, examining not only their technologies and topologies, but also their social, cultural and political implications when implemented at different scales. Then focus on the physicality of these networks, and how they can be used to configure a new kind of space. After we imagined, designed, visualized and practically demonstrate a network that seamlessly integrates into physical space.

During this team work, we were looking at the alternative possibilities for architectural production drawn by parametric and associative environments, yet focusing on emphasizing their integrative use from conception to construction. With that objective, the class will look into integrated design and fabrication processes to investigate their conceptual and material impact in the discipline. A traditional architectural problem - the DOME- was used as a starting point to research geometric differentiation in a component-based design approach. The regularity of this form will serve as a stable background to set-up the emergence of variation in defining building assemblies that have the potential to accomplish specific spatial, constructive and performative goals, while considering their effects as aesthetic and ornamental strategies. We developed a ‘parametric dome’, questioning its geometric attributes while discussing/judging the performative potential behind their design and fabrication solutions. selected work.francisca aroso

the PARAMETRIC HOUSE design studio in digital tectonics 1 The house has been a continuous challenge throughout the history of architecture. In that sense, it has necessarily reflected the cultural framework and technological possibilities of each period. Given that digital production technologies have dramatically expanded today’s design and building possibilities, the subject of the house is a territory of critical experimentation. Departing from this assumption, the studio made students re-think the design and construction of a single habitat, considering the new cultural and industrial paradigm of customization. From a methodological point of view, the studio investigated the impact of digital technologies for the production of architecture, with a particular focus on the integrated use of parametric design tools and digital fabrication equipment. For that matter, participating students were required to enroll in the ‘Parametric Design’ seminar, which provided the conceptual background and necessary skills for developing the project. The studio worked as a research unit, where all the students contributed to a broad research agenda (in small groups, in this case the team was: Luis Odiaga, Javier Raya and Francisca Aroso), investigating specific themes around the house and critically identifying opportunities for new developments (i.e. programmatic, geometric, constructive or environmental). Throughout the term, the work was developed and evaluated with the construction of parametric digital models and physical experiments at 1:1 scale (including models and material prototypes).

the BI.O.BRICK |advanced BIOTILE materials The production of this material has been developed during January 08 at IaaC, Barcelona, as i described above is the result of mixing old knowledge with up-to-daye applications. Most conspicuously, I have mixed the materials according to their characteristics and properties: 1.potato and banana (fruit) has gluing and plascity effects; banana skin is known to have fibbers that are reistance and flexibility (this knowledge was acquired through studying Palm tree); 2.newspaper resistance and body (specially after dry); Cork allows the material to be water-resistant and isolated; 3.garlic glue is a sub.product made from the process of putting garlic on water for three-days period and it’s function is complement the effect of the potato skin; glair has the “glue” function like the garlic and the potato with banana; 4.beetroot juice is necessary only to give color and finally water is basically incorporated through wetting the newspaper for molding it.

MAPPING BARCELONA mapping seminar
Mapping Barcelona_ The first proposed exercise is the study of the historical centre of Barcelona. This urban complex is undergoing deep transforma-tions due to its appropriation by tourism, especially fast consume tourism. In this way, places that were traditionally central spaces for the identity of the city are changing to adapt to the economies that have raised from mass tourism and with the possibility to mode in the low-cost world. Barcelona can witness the densification of pedestrians in the public space, the increase of noise on streets, the eroding process in public space. All of that following re-latively loose rules. Mapping Barcelona_Old Town aims to map this trans-formations by finding the most revealing data of the process.

the PERFORMATIVE DIFFERENTIATION core studio 1
Core Studio 1 commences with analysis of all the parameters and characteristics of the material systems generated in the Induction Studio, and uses the results of this analysis as the first generation of an evolutionary series. Through the application of evolutionary strategies and computational techniques the architectural qualities of different material systems will be recombined and enhanced over succeeding generations. As the systems increase in scale and three dimensional complexity through digital morphogenesis, a series of built models will explore the integration of material behaviour and fabrication processes. A fully fabricated and digitally modelled doubly curved material systems that exhibit advanced and fully integrated structural and environmental properties. Over four weeks one have designed a covered space that can be used as a café by day and a forum for learning, debate, and entertainment at night. The footprint of your pavilion-like intervention has to be between 200 and 300 m2 and be located within a perimeter of 25m x 25m at the southern end of the Place des Arénes in Nîmes, France (43° 50‘ N, 4° 21‘ E).

Research, study and analyse of biological active systems - the venus fly trap - in order to extract the logics and propose an application under the context of Architecture. The goal was to have an overall understanding of the system and a more detailed look into the parts of interest (mechanism). Following the research, detailed digital models were used for the geometrical structural performative analysis with the use of computational tools [Rhino, Strand7, Ansys] and to gain an accurate understanding of the mechanisms used and performative effects within these natural systems.

the PIXEL CANYON competition
PIXEL CANYON explores the intricate relationship between contemporary digital design and fabrication processes through the design of a structure that is simultaneously an enclosure and not an enclosure. PIXEL CANYON acts as a connective tissue inside the atrium of the University of Houston’s College of Architecture, generating multiple pathways around itself and bringing people together with its multi -purpose uses and undulating morphology. Through its twisting geometry, it creates enclosures and seating areas that smoothly transform into one another. As such, PIXEL CANYON gives way to the experience of multiple functions, such as eating, seating, and socializing. The idea behind PIXEL CANYON is centered on deconstructing the brick wall and transforming it to a sliced surface morphology where the visual effect of the ‘brick’ is still present but its fabrication is achieved through the layering of painted flat pieces assembled and vertically pinned together. This design removes the heavy and solid idea of the brick component and plays around with light and geometry. In this configuration, the ‘brick’ is replaced by horizontal layers of surface strips as the component; whereby a new assembly process is being proposed through the fabrication of similar lengths of ‘brick bands’ instead of placing bricks one at a time. The parametric toolset for the generation of PIXEL CANYON is Rhinoceros and Rhinoceros Grasshopper. The two undulating forms are evaluated at their specific UV coordinates for curvature information on. The curvature data is then translated into a parameter that feeds the depth of each ‘brick’ component that is centered at each evaluated point. As such, the width and height of each ‘brick’ is the same (80 mm. and 128 mm. respectively); the only changing parameter is the depth of the bricks, whereby the increase in curvature amount will result in an increase in the depth.

the bifurcated bridge competition
The Bifurcating Bridge project proposes a new footbridge that connects some of the older spaces of the Architectural Association with the recently acquired design studios on Morwell Street. This structure connects three different levels of the school via spanning across a small courtyard. The bridge is best described as a hybrid structure, both bridge and staircase. The name of the bridge is derived from its characteristic Y-shape in plan. The aim of this branching morphology is to facilitate circulation and visual interaction.The Bifurcating Bridge is a student project that is part of the ongoing design research of the EmTech studio 2009/2010. It is being developed in collaboration with students from the Institute of Computational Design (ICD) in Stuttgart. The design reflects the EmTech course’s interest in digital design and manufacturing; the overall process represents typical methodologies of working that oscillate between digital design and rapid prototyping. In this manner the design progresses through the use of parametric tools and physical study models at different scales. The set-up of the workflow allows for a hierarchical design approach and in return simultaneously develops different areas of the proposal. Within this process is a constant collaboration with professional consultants Buro Happold Structural Engineers and Zurich-based company Design to Production.

Tune とは 『自ら調和を図る』 という意味。 本提 案は自然環境のみならず多様化する社会環境 や家族構成に呼応した住まい方を提案してい る。 下図 ライフサイクルダイアグラムでは、 50 年のスパンにおける三世帯家族の住まい方を 例示しており、 家族が成長するにつれて、 小さ な居住空間が (微気候に包まれながら) その形 態・距離を可変させ増減築している様子が確 認できる。 また、 特に下宿学生、 共働き夫婦の ためのベビーシッターや祖父母のための介護 ヘルパーの仮住まいなど、 コア家族の外から の構成員を集合住宅内に柔軟に呼び込むこと で、 現代社会が抱える家族と住まい方の問題 を軽減する一端をも担っている。 なお、 本プログラムはサイトスペシフィックで はなく、 都市中心部、 郊外のベッドタウン、 過疎 地いずれにおいても汎用性がある (本紙では 大都市近郊の某ベッドタウンでの開発を例と している) 。 また、 本集合住宅は従来型の整形敷地を前提 としておらず、 重層の家を柔軟に増減築できる ことから、 広がりのある敷地に複数の集合住宅 が隣接するような一団地の開発も想定しうる。 また、 それによって新たな交流・コミュニティ ーが醸成される事も狙いの一つとしている。
1-2 呼吸する壁がつくる微気候を取り込む/交換する
1-1 微気候を切り取る二重の家 木質材料の持つ伸縮性を微細に利用した呼吸す る壁 (大きな箱)から、 構造積層合板で構成され る小さな箱まで、 木材が層のように折り重なった 集合住宅を想定する。

大きな箱の家は、 外部環境との間での風・熱・湿 度・採光等を自動調整することができ、 断熱され 環境調整された小さな箱の家は、 大きな箱に切り 取られた微気候に包まれている (右平面図・断面 図参照) 。 この微気候の内部への取り込みは、 様々 な開き方をする建具によって調整することが出来 る。 住人は家に住み続けるうちに、 建具の開閉方 法=家の操縦方法をしだいに身につけ、 その知恵 を親から子そして孫へ受け継がれていく。 また、 こ の集合住宅では原則 外側から内側に行くにつれ てプライバシーの度合いが上がるので、 住人はそ の時々の居住目的や家族の関係性に応じて小さ な家から大きな家を行き来きできる。

住む人の家族構成・成長の度合いの変化に応じ て大小に可変する家。 小さな家を取り囲むフレー ムに呼吸する壁を取り付けることで、 例えば、 中庭 や寛ぎの間を内部化 (もしくは外部化) したり、 思 春期にいる子供に相応のプライバシーを与える 等、 ユーザー自身の手によって家の境界を変化さ せることが出来る (右の展開図参照) 。

上記のように内側の小さな家の位置、 外側の大きな家の外 形=微気候の形は、 あとから自由に改変することが可能で ある。 適宜環境をセルフアジャストできる居住空間 (小さな 箱) と、 定期的なセルフビルドによる半屋外の集落的空間 ( 大きな箱) を集合住宅の中で併用することで、 極小~極大様 々なスケールで形態とその境界が揺れ動き、 家族と共に成 長できる (減築もできる) 木造住宅となる。

木質繊維の方向を考慮して合板をラミネーションすることで、 あらかじめプ 開閉する孔をもった呼吸する壁によって周辺環境を微気候空間に選択的に取り込む。 材料自体のミクロな性質によってパッシブに動く呼吸する壁は、 ログラムした湿度変化の範囲内で、 最小で5cm、 最大で25-30cm程度のフラップを開閉することが可能である。 二重の家は、 「切断」 と 「連続」 の双方を兼ね備えた半透膜 状の平面を利用してつくる 空間である。 これは 「均質性」 と 「特異性」 を如意に両立で きるものである。 透過率だけ で要素を制御するが、 その透 過率は時間で変化する。 よっ て、 振る舞いは半透膜のよう にみえる。 光、 音といった様々 な環境因子を面でコントロ ールする仕組みによって気 候をチューンする。

大都市近郊の某ベッドタウンの敷地では、 50年間の間に、 右図のようなストーリーが 展開するだろう。
2 気候をチューンする
風上に対して斜めに角度を振ったほうが、 内部にまん べんなく風が入りやすく、 風速も得られる。 また周辺へ の風の影響は、 角度の緩いほうが流速が遅くなる、 特に 敷地後方への影響は角度を振ったほうが大きい。
呼吸する壁によってつくられた微気候は、 大きな家によって敷地の中に切り取られる。 人の手により自由に開閉で きる建具により、 微気候はさまざまな方法で小さな家の中に取り込まれる。 また、 微気候空間 (小さな家の外側、 大 きな家の内側) はいわば土間もしくはパティオのような空間であり、 非空調空間に適した活動を行う場となる。 微気 候は隣り合う大きな家の間でも交換される。

ケーススタディとして敷地内を流れる風の動きを図示した。 他の単純なマッスに比べて、 二重の家の内部は適切な風速の風が入り、 滞ることなく風が周辺にも抜けて行く。

二重の家 (下図) とシングルスキンの通常の家 (上図) で ボリュームの 間を流れる風の動きを比較した。 二重スキンのほうがボリューム間の 風速がはやく、 また後方を中心に周辺部分へ与える影響が小さいこと がわかる。
箱と箱のすき間にも二重の家のほうが適切な量の風が流れている。 箱の表面の流速も、 二重 の家のほうがはやい。 風下の風の乱れ方、 弱まり方は単純なマッスのほうがおおきい。 敷地 周辺、 特に側面の風の速さについては二重の家のほうが流速が速い。 単純なマッスの場合は 敷地周囲への風の流れを妨げている。 二重の家のほうが周辺への影響が少ないといえるだ ろう。 二重の家の内部は十分に弱められた風環境になっているが、 自然換気をするのに十分 な風が流れている。

The scales have a passive mechanism - open and close - according with the relative humidity changes. Open up towards the veneer’s side of the lamination when the humidity is drops (lower than 50%) and when the relative humidity increases from around 50% up to 100% it opens up to the opposite side. the FULL PRINT3D. PRINTING OBJECTS research
The permanent exhibition, Full Print3d. Printing objects provides an introduction to digital fabrication through a series of projects that illustrate the conceptual implications of this type of production for design. In additive fabrication—popularly known as ‘3D printing’—an object is created by superimposing and solidifying successive, extremely thin layers of a particular material. Whereas other types of digital fabrication grew out of the automation of manual techniques that were already familiar before the advent of the computer (cutting, milling, folding, bending, etc.), additive processes make it possible to produce the object, particle by particle, according to the data sent from the computer. This flexibility allows unprecedented freedom in the shape of the design and the control of the material. The work being explored developed in various disciplines, illustrates how new concepts in the production of material are emerging, thanks to the adaptation and use of additive fabrication technologies. The versatility of 3D printing technologies can be found in the creation of everyday objects and furniture; the printing of human cell tissue, bone prostheses, food and the adaptation of machines to print buildings, and points to a possible paradigm shift in the creation of the world around us. All of the objects presented at Full Print3d were created using different additive manufacturing processes and are organize into six thematic areas: freeform, variation, customization, complexity, materiality, and finally, applications and research.

Wood is one of the ancient and most common construction material available. In ancient times, wooden logs and branches were joined together to create frameworks and woven to produce walls, which became a crucial element in the construction of buildings. When human beings stopped using caves for living, the first known man-made shelters were built of wood, adobe, straw, reeds, and leaves. Later on, during the era of stonework facades, wood started to be used as a structural element. As a dependable and versatile building material, wood has been used almost universally since the Neolithic up to the modern timber residential tower presently. Conspicuously, wood is being used in diverse ways and manipulated through several techniques for a long time. Due to its wide availability, inherent qualities, ease of machining, and structural stability, it has applications in many different projects and functions. The idea behind this study is to explore new with innovative design and fabrication approaches to existing (traditional) materials, namely wood.

This principle is applied into the design development and fabrication of the timber facade. the MATERIAL MANIPULATION research
Since wood‘s anisotropic nature and hygroscopic behaviour were considered to the most relevant properties to be explored on this research, on exhaustive analysis was made to find the out suitable species of wood for the development of n humidity-responsive system. Grounded on biomimetic case studies of the banksia (follicles) as well the pine cone (scales), which use bilayer material system to control the capacity to respond to changes in moisture, a similar approach was taken. In order to programme shape changes while still allowing variation on it, the linear relationship between MC and dimensional changes was extended by adding an isotropic (passive) layer to the veneer’s layer. This biomimetic-based material system is developed in a way that it necessitates neither external energy supply nor any type of mechanical or electronic control is necessitated (for the shape to change).

Seven typologies of cuts with different orientation were made on the rectangular veneer sheets. These boards, in side a climatic chamber, were subjected to a relative humidity range. The objective of this project is to introduce students to the SUBTRACTIVE 2D numeric fabrication processes, focusing on the technique of cutting through the use of a Laser Cut machine. Each student had the chance to work directly with the machine (supervised by a Fab-Lab instructor), use the specific CAM software to write the machine’s instructions, place the material, and oversee his/her own job. In terms of design, the intention of the class is to produce a large scale installation, where each student contributed by fabricating one of its parts. The challenge of the project was to produce a portion of a three-dimensional PIPE, constructed with planar sections and assembled in a way like a cage with planar ribs, using an egg-crate technique. In order to be able to assemble all projects together, where all the parts produce a single pipe system, the installation was understood as a sort of ‘exquisite corps’. In other words, students will be given standard part typologies and geometric constraints for the end sections of their individual part (such to standardize the ends of all pipe segments) and thus facilitate the overall assembly and allow for possibilities of variation in the final arrangement.

The objective of this project is to introduce students to the ADDITIVE 3D numeric fabrication processes (RAPID PROTOTYPING), focusing on the technique of 3D Printing. Students had the chance to work directly with the machine (supervised by a Fab-Lab instructor), use the specific CAM software to write the machine’s instructions, oversee their printing job, remove the printed parts from the machine, and finish by cleaning and binding their own fabricated parts. In terms of design, the intention of the class was to produce a series of articulated samples of textile patterns, which explore the potential of fabricating parts without geometric limitations. The modeling of these samples will entail controling the curvature threads, imagining their spatial interweaving and exploring different levels of intricacy across the textile sample. To produce this project, students started from a 2D pattern of their choice (weaving, knitting, graphic, microscopic or other). The challenge of the project was to produce a three-dimensional textile sample from the original pattern, though the generation of 3D threads that move in and out of eachother. These threads should have a minimum of 3mm thickness (diameter). The final textile sample must be inscribed withing a bounding box of 11 x 22 x 2 cms.

The objective of project is to introduce students to the SUBTRACTIVE 3D numeric fabrication processes (CNC MILLING). Students had the chance to work directly with the 3-axis Milling machine (supervised by a Fab-Labinstructor), use the specific CAM software to write the machine’s instructions, prepare their material and position it onto the machine, oversee the milling job and remove the final milled parts. In terms of design, the intention of the class was to explore Milling processes as a way of producing unique molds, and explore the potentials of creating differentiated tile assemblies (the elements of which will be casted in these molds). The modeling of these tiles will consider issues like surface curvature and relief, in order to investigate the possibilities of CNC Milling. To produce this project , students will get a standard piece of foam (33 x 33cms) in which they will mill their part, freed from any given restrictions in trems of boundary and outline (apart from the material itself ). The challenge of the project is to produce a single tile considering how it may assemble creating differentiated patterns, or a group of 2-4 smaller tiles that equally assemble in multiple configurations. In both situations the material assigned to each grup is limited to a single piece of foam. The final project will include the milled mold and the final tile assembly (minimum 6 tiles). PLEASE NOTE: In this project, special consideration was given to the student’s sense of ‘economy’, considering the milling time in comparison to the final surface effects of their tiles.

theAACRAFTED TOWER Istanbul visiting school teaching work
The AA Istanbul Visiting School will explore tall structures through vertical growth algorithms by focusing on local crafts. The main aim of the AA Istanbul Global School is to revisit the basic form of creativity in crafts, and to investigate on the potential of re-linking crafts processes to contemporary digital design thinking/ production within the context of tall structures. The agenda of tall structures is one of the most relevant and significant issues concerning the contemporary architecture of Istanbul. In recent years, there has been a major increase in the construction of tall buildings in Istanbul, especially in the Levent-Maslak axis, namely the financial district of Istanbul. In this respect, the workshop will be studying the characteristics of this region, analyze the existing urban context in relation to architectural and infrastructural aspects, and offer potential models of tall structures that address the current observed problems in the area. Local crafts will be investigated as active material systems for interior and exterior organizations and developed in relation to tall structures. As such, the tower, an architectural typology that has relatively kept a stable organizational structure and formal language since the end of the 19th century, will be challenged. The objective is to extract information from crafted models in terms of structural, material and performative behavior in order to explore computationally generated dynamic models for the tower typology.

the VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE workshop Venice Biennale workshop started on July the 7th and its aim was to produce the installation that will be representing Vicente Guallart (IaaC Director) work at the 11th Edition of the Venice Biennale Architecture Exhibition titled: Architecture beyond buildings. Researchers and collaborators from MIT - The Center for Bits and Atoms, IaaC, Bestiario and others are part of the production process of a 1:1 scale reconfigurable and shared living space representing the multi-scalar systems that constructs the world. The project engages with the theme of the Biennale by positing the need to reprogramme the structures with which we inhabit the world through the introduction of distributed intelligence in the nodes, networks and environments with which we construct buildings, cities and territories. The idea is to demonstrate that in order to make a more self sufficient world with decentralized networks, the functional relationships between the different elements of the habitability networks need to be redesigned.
