ESPÍRITO DE COMUNIDADE
PARADINHA 2

A CÉLULA
(T4)

FINAL PROJECT REFURBISHMENT OF AN AGRICULTURAL COMPLEX CARRAZEDA DE ANSIĂƒES
2018/19
THESIS ABSTRACT The natural evolution of society has led to buildings with agricultural purposes to be no longer needed. Alongside this, emerges the necessity to find places to host new programmes that cater for current needs. In this case there are two options: either building from scratch or taking advantage of an existing building and adapting the new programme to its apparently obsolete form. The refurbishment project for an Agricultural Complex in Carrazeda de AnsiĂŁes proposes to stop the natural wrecking process of a rural structure with familiar heritage, giving it a new life by adapting its agricultural and livestock use to holiday housing, as a rest and leisure refuge. This dissertation is an illustrated story about an architectural project development, which goes beyond the refurbishment and the extension design issues. In fact, the project aspires to design an environment that evokes the past forever lost (by Destruction) and simultaneously, that gives us comfort from the pleasure of a new future. (by Transformation). This is, therefore, an experimental laboratory where project themes and visual inspirations are explored and theoretical and physical references as well as artistic ones interconnect during the natural process of time flow either related to the case study or the designing process in itself, in its wider sense and not strictly related to refurbishment Despite being a project in a real context, the essay that we present is not intended to thoroughly gather technical information, supported by absolute truths and unquestionable facts. Conversely, the story that we tell wants to make evident the uncertainty inherent to every creative process that precedes the construction of places, scenarios of our best memories.

HIGH SCHOOL CAMPO 24 DE AGOSTO, PORTO
2016/17
The conceptual idea was to transform the whole lot available for construction into a single solid mass, where it would be dug a hollow and a prominent volume added (the classrooms). With this strategy I propose a total cut between the educational world and the street fast movement of this urban center.
A school must be a versatile place where the collective spaces are the heart of that experience. Indeed, a school is a world in itself, therefore I tried to recreate that atmosphere through two open spaces that are the negative of each other – the courtyard, a private space in the ground level and is connected with all the social spaces ; and the flat roof, in the first level, a collective space that communicates with the surroundings though a fantastic view over the 24 August avenue.
Due to the demanding and complex program I chose a steel column + beam structure and, in the case of the playground, a truss system. As for the materials, I opted for a aesthetic of contrast between the ground floor (heavy white concrete) and the high volume (light transparent glass)

COLLECTIVE DWELLING RUA DAS FONTAINHAS, PORTO
2015/16
The set of the intervention is an unsolved void that asks for a urban intervention. This neighborhood is made of old fragments and also recent social housing buildings. I wanted my project to be clear, pragmatic, versatile and an answer to the contemporary needs. Therefore I respected the city skyline and the atmosphere, however instead of a mimetic repetition of the old building, I opt to use contemporary language and technique in order to state a new construction era. My biggest reference for this project was the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura house projects and “White houses from the architect Adalberto Dias .
This was also the first year I first experience drawing with a digital software. The drawings were made in Autocad, whereas the digital images were produced in Archicad.

STRUCTURAL SPACE | C-245 Viladecans y Gavà |
ERASMUS
We formed groups to give live to this old main road, C-245. It starts from being a simple path, to emerge as the center of Viladecans and Gavà, two cities nearby Barcelona. Not only did we studied this axis, we also analyzed the whole area in order to understand the fluxes and transform this industrial path in a “Rambla”, where the enjoyment of the citizens was our number one priority.

The concept of this square comes from its relation with the previous proposed “Rambla”. Acknowledging the former as a long axis, I opted to consider it as the main direction of this new urban project. For a start, this square would have to have two different areas: the North area, in contact with the “Rambla” and therefore exposed to the heavy traffic; and the South area, that faces residential as well as small collective buildings, hence, much more quiet. From this dual contrast I came up with the idea of creating a much more open zone, with the character of busy square, used only for passing by. Whereas, in the second zone I designed a living space, closer to the idea of a urban garden. The design of the square is based on the same module used that in the “Rambla” flowerbeds (3,5x13,5m ; 5,5x13,5m ; central exception central: 3,5x17,5 m; 5,5 x 17,5 m). Moreover, it was design a underground parking whose enters, either for cars or pedestrians, fit in this modular system. Regarding the pavement, I opted for off-site concrete pieces with specific measures that allow the installation of benches and street lights in this thought geometrical system. It is foreseen that this will be a square that will both serve the residential area as well as the new designed commercial axis, connecting a peaceful quiet garden to the urban live of this new centrality of Gavá and Viledecans.

CULTURAL CENTER/ RESIDENTIAL BUILDING Nearby Trindade Metro Station, PORTO
2014/2015
The project, which I might say, it doesn’t belong to me, supports himself in his defects, in his virtues. I state that it does not belong to me because it is the result of a place, of imagined stories and people, of predictions of the future, of conversations, of books, of travels, of intuition. I knew from the beginning that the residence should be the plan that would fill the old street of Porto, Bonjardim, whereas the cultural center would be in charge of the great streets, in the flow of the great “voids” of the city, assuming a noble role. While on one hand references such as the museum in Santiago de Compostela and Bonjour Tristesse, both of Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Grassi and Rossi façades, and Alvar Aalto’s curve residence, were inspiring images, in a second phase the journey took me to concrete spaces and to a reality of textures and colors that got me away from the abstract material of the model. This project was made entirely by hand drawing.
