FRANCIS MESLET A graduate in Design from the Fine Art School of Nancy in 1986, early in his career Francis Meslet was a designer, but soon turned to advertising when he joined several agencies as an artistic director. After 30 years spent questioning the creative concept and studying images in all his compositions, he is now a creative director.

Francis does not hesitate to roam the world in his spare time, searching for abandoned sites, sanctuaries where time seems to have stopped after humans have evacuated them. He thus brings back captivating and melancholic images of his travels to the other side of the world...

Like time capsules, testifying to a parallel world and perfect for enabling the mind to wander and ponder, Francis Meslet’s melancholic images brave the passage of time, making way for silence after the memories left behind by human inhabitation.

In these deserted places, no more than the rustling of the wind can be heard through a broken window or the sound of water dripping from a dilapidated ceiling. These silences nonetheless invite the spectator to slip into these wellguarded and mysterious places captured by the photographer and attempt to bring to life that which has been forgotten.

In this power station orders were shouted in German, in this French Catholic school the cries of children resounded to the sound of the bell but who can imagine the sounds hidden behind the walls of this old psychiatric asylum in Italy or on the docks of this abandoned island of Japan?

Diplômé major en Design de l’École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy en 1986, Francis Meslet exerce le métier de designer durant une courte période puis se tourne rapidement vers la communication en intégrant le circuit des agences de publicité comme Directeur Artistique. Après 30 années passées à triturer le concept créatif et autopsier l’image sous toutes ses décompositions, il est aujourd’hui Directeur de Création. Francis parcourt le monde à ses heures perdues, à la recherche de lieux abandonnés, sanctuaires sur lesquels le temps s’est arrêté après que l’homme en ait volontairement ou non refermé les portes. Il en ramène des images saisissantes, capsules temporelles témoignant d‘un univers parallèle propice à l’évasion de l’esprit et à l’interrogation…

Ces endroits abandonnés ont fait place au silence au fil du temps. On n’y entend plus guère ici que le bruissement du vent par une vitre cassée ou là le rythme syncopé d’une goutte d’eau qui perle d’un plafond ravagé. Ces silences appellent pourtant le visiteur exceptionnel de tels lieux.

Dans cette centrale électrique, des ordres étaient criés en allemand, dans ce collège catholique français, les cris d’enfants résonnaient au son de la cloche, mais qui peut imaginer les sons cachés derrière les murs de cet ancien asile psychiatrique en Italie ou sur les quais de cette île abandonnée au large du Japon ?

De ces silences, chacun tire sa propre interprétation, … réinterprétation.

Each release is unique in style with one common thread, that the expression is boundless and that it will take the listener on a voyage enabling the most intimate connection between musician and listener, to create a personal dreamscape.

« A record series in collaboration with designer photographer Francis Meslet » The other common thread is the artwork from designer artist Francis Meslet who has worked on the covers of each release providing a feast for the eyes to compliment the aural feast of the music. He constantly seeks out abandoned buildings, the rotting husks of once vibrant places and captures the decay and desolation adding to it a unique vision of beauty.

His visual expression compliments perfectly the music in a common goal, to transcend the senses.

La collection Mind Travels, initiée par le label « Ici d’ailleurs » en 2014, est dédiée aux musiques néo-classiques, ambient et industriels, avec comme sous-texte affirmé leur hybridation, et ce afin de toujours proposer des disques inattendus et de promouvoir une vision artistique jusqu’au-boutiste. En ce sens, si les artistes Mind Travels partagent cette même volonté, les premiers volumes de la collection témoignent d’une réelle diversité, chaque disque constituant une approche nouvelle au sein d’un espace d’expression favorisant la prise de risque.

« Une collection en collaboration avec le designer photographe Francis Meslet » Cette forte identité musicale va de paire avec une charte graphique spécifique, conçue autour du travail du designer Francis Meslet. Photographe émérite qui définit lui-même son travail comme « une autopsie de l’image sous toutes ses décompositions ». Il est constamment à la recherche de lieux laissés à l’abandon et tente d’en saisir toute la force évocatrice malgré leur apparente absence de vie. Obsédé par le détail qui changera la perception d’un espace donné, il réinssuffle, en quelques clichés, âme et dynamisme à des environnements en prise aux dégâts du temps, désertés par l’activité humaine.

Les visuels de Francis Meslet donnent un écho tout particulier à la démarche musicale développée par Mind Travels. Musique et visuel se rejoignent ici dans le but commun de transcender les sens et tentent de produire un discours de fond sur la manière de percevoir et réceptionner une œuvre.

There was a time when we used to climb the 307 steps that lead to the top of this lighthouse several times a day. 307 steps thrown into an interminable whirlwind, 307 steps towards bliss. The view is impressive.

Like an uncontrollable vertigo that can suck you up or grab you and drag you into the depths. Step after step,

the same repetitive landscape, a hand on the banister, moving one foot after the other trying to save enough breath to get to the end of the ascent and never knowing if it will be enough.

Then, finally, the beating heart, the light, the view, the space, going even further, even higher, towards something even more beautiful.

Il fut un temps où l’on gravissait plusieurs fois par jour les 307 marches qui mènent au sommet de ce phare. 307 marches lancées dans un tourbillon interminable, 307 marches vers la félicité. La vue impressionne.

Tel ce vertige incontrôlable qui peut vous aspirer vers le haut ou vous happer dans les profondeurs. Marche après

marche, ce même paysage interminable, une main sur la rampe, un pied après l’autre, économisant un souffle dont on ne sait s’il sera suffisant pour arriver à bout de l’ascension.

Puis, enfin, le cœur battant, la lumière, la vue, l’espace, encore plus loin, encore plus haut, encore plus beau.

MANYFINGERS The spectacular Nowhere

Bristol born Chris Cole aka Manyfingers, has been with “Ici d’ailleurs” since 2005, having contributed on several albums notably with Matt Elliott as well as The Dark, by Third Eye Foundation, and as a member of the all-star band, Numbers Not Names, whose first opus What’s The Price ? was one of 2012’s most striking hip-hop records.

Natif de Bristol, Chris Cole alias Manyfingers, est sur « Ici, d’ailleurs... » depuis 2005. Il a contribué à plusieurs albums notamment avec Matt Elliott ainsi que The Dark, avec The Third Eye Foundation, et comme membre du groupe all-star, Numbers Not Names, dont le premier opus What’s The Price? fut l’un des disques de hip-hop les plus marquants de 2012.

In the middle of nowhere, a pavilion surges up between the trunks of the hundred-year old cedars which dominate the park. A backdoor, a staircase as narrow as it is tortured and then this organ - an unexpected monument in such a place.

In this former salon dedicated to Arts, Music and Photography,

there has been a heavy silence for several decades. Only a few broken daguerreotypes on the ground testify to its past splendour and to an era in which people knew how to enjoy themselves or be curious about everything if they just had a lot of money.

Au milieu de nulle part, un pavillon surgit entre les troncs des cèdres centenaires qui dominent le parc. Une porte dérobée, un escalier aussi étroit que torturé et puis cet orgue, monumental, inattendu en un tel lieu. Dans cet ancien salon dédié aux Arts, à la musique et à la photographie,

règne un silence pesant depuis plusieurs dizaines d’années.

Seuls quelques daguerréotypes brisés à même le sol nous livrent le témoignage d’une splendeur passée, d’un temps où on savait s’amuser ou se montrer curieux de tout pour peu qu’on ait beaucoup d’argent.

AIDAN BAKER

The sea swells a bit

A Canadian musician currently living in Berlin, Aidan Baker was first known as half of the prolific project Nadja, playing alongside Leah Buckareff. LP after LP and collaboration after collaboration, Nadja never ceased to explore the different aspects of ambient, noise and drone music. Also a prolific solo composer, Aidan Baker is wellknown by experimental and alternative music fans as much as for his solo albums including prestigious collaborations with notable artists (Tim Hecker, Thisquietarmy, Noveller...) and well respected record labels (Important, Lattitudes, Gizeh...).

Musicien canadien basé à Berlin, Aidan Baker s’est fait connaître au sein du prolifique duo Nadja, aux côtés de Leah Buckareff. Au fil des albums et des collaborations, Nadja ne cessera d’explorer les différents spectres des musiques ambient, noise et drone. Également très productif sous son propre nom, Aidan Baker est bien connu 10 des amateurs de musiques expérimentales et non conventionnelles, tant par ses albums solo que par ses prestigieuses collaborations avec des artistes (Tim Hecker, Thisquietarmy, Noveller...) et des labels (Important, Lattitudes, Gizeh...) de renom.

An industrial Guggenheim, a deserted tower of Babel, an open space for the bipolar, what else could I say! When you enter the very depths of this tower and discover its original architecture, you can’t help but wonder... Why? Why is such a large tower built like a hollow tooth, without internal

floors and with just that narrow passageway glued to the inner walls? As I went up from floor to floor the impression became even stronger. As if I was propelled towards the centre of the cylindrical building in a kind of weightlessness, I had the irresistible desire to gaze into it.

Guggenheim industriel, tour de Babel désertée, open space pour cyclothymiques, que saisje encore ! Quand on pénètre dans les entrailles de cette tour et qu’on se trouve confronté à son architecture, on ne peut s’empêcher de se questionner...

Pourquoi ? Pourquoi cette tour si grande est-elle bâtie comme

une dent creuse, sans étages intérieurs avec simplement une coursive étroite collée aux parois internes. À mesure que je gravis les étages cette impression s’affirme. Propulsé en apesanteur au centre du building cylindrique, me prend une irrésistible envie d’y plonger mon regard.

STEFAN WESOLOWSKI Kompleta

Stefan Wesolowski is a young Polish composer born in 1985.

He first studied music in his home country at the Gdansk academy then at the academy in Villecroze, France. At just 30 years old, he has already had a fine career with several albums, collaboration projects, contributions and prizes to his credit.

His work has been released by many labels including Gusstaff, Ghostly International, Miasmah, Important. In 2014, he signed a publishing deal with Mute Song Publishing (Nick Cave, Ben Frost, Swans, etc...).

Stefan Wesolowski est un jeune compositeur polonais né en 1985.

Il a d’abord étudié la musique dans son pays d’origine à l’académie de Gdansk puis en France, à l’académie de Villecroze. À seulement 30 ans, il affiche déjà une belle carrière avec plusieurs albums, de nombreux projets de collaboration, contributions et prix à son actif. Son travail a été édité par de nombreux labels dont 12 « Gusstaff, Ghostly International, Miasmah, Important ». The people who lived here had chosen to live in cells. In search of a spirituality that you can almost touch because the whole atmosphere is so filled with it. Corridor after corridor, cell after cell, the light attracts or blinds you to better guide you (or lose you) towards the foot of this staircase that could not

be imagined until you reach the entrance to this fully buttressed chapel. The exoskeleton sublimates the dizzying dimensions of the edifice in an interlaced steel structure stretching towards a single point of escape - a salvation that seems unwilling to come.

Les gens qui vivaient ici étaient en cellules de leur plein gré. À la recherche d’une spiritualité qu’on pourrait presque toucher du doigt tant l’atmosphère en est emplie. Couloir après couloir, cellule après cellule, la lumière vous attire ou vous aveugle pour mieux vous guider ou vous perdre jusqu’au pied

de cet escalier qu’on n’avait pas imaginé, jusqu’à l’entrée de cette chapelle entièrement étayée. L’exosquelette sublime les dimensions vertigineuses de l’édifice dans un entrelacs d’acier tendu vers un unique point de fuite, point de salut qui semble ne pas vouloir venir.

These places remind us that, while light has the power to circulate, there are corners of our memories where clarity has given way to the deepest obscurity. Light seems to forget the paths which it took during the glorious era of the steel

barons - light is no longer there, daylight is no longer there and only a few curious people still bother to cross the distance between the darkest to the brightest point. The time of light is forgotten! Just simply totally forgotten.

Ces lieux nous rappellent que si la lumière a le pouvoir de circuler, il est des recoins de la mémoire où la clarté a fait place aux ténèbres les plus denses. Oubliant ces chemins qu’elle empruntait à l’époque glorieuse des barons de l’acier,

la lumière ne s’y fait plus, le jour n’y point plus et seuls quelques rares curieux parcourent encore la distance qui va du point le plus sombre au plus lumineux. Oublié le temps des lumières ! Oublié simplement et proprement.

MATHIAS DELPLANQUE Drachen

Mathias Delplanque is an artist born in Burkina Faso & now living and working in Nantes.

His work consists of ambient, electronic music, electro acoustic & concrete but also contains elements of dub and field recording. He has been refining his unique approach to sound and music for 15 years under his own name and using different pseudonyms (Bidlo, Lena).

Mathias Delplanque est un artiste nantais né au Burkina Faso qui cultive des liens étroits avec les sphères de l’ambient, des musiques électroniques, électro-acoustiques et concrètes ainsi que du dub et du field recording.

Son approche est donc intimement liée à la création du son.

Cela fait maintenant 15 ans de que Mathias peaufine cette démarche, que ce soit en son nom propre ou sous différents pseudonymes (Bidlo, Lena).

The rain was pouring down.

If you tried to do things too quickly, you could forget the most basic precautions, get hurt, make a spectacle of yourself or even miss a possible entry point. Luckily, after climbing the bank and running through the garden, we immediately found where to enter.

Finally out of the rain. I did not know what to expect inside this

winegrowers’ house.

Progressing slowly into the dark through crowded corridors, we knew immediately that we had not travelled all those miles for nothing as soon as we pushed that door open. The fine weather returned and the sunbeams flooded the room with a sublime light. Here too time had stopped.

En voulant faire vite on pouvait en oublier les plus élémentaires précautions, se blesser, se faire remarquer, ou même louper un accès possible. Par chance, après avoir grimpé le talus et couru à travers le jardin, nous avons trouvé immédiatement le point d’entrée. Enfin au sec. Je ne savais pas à quoi m‘attendre à l’intérieur de cette

demeure de vignerons.

Progressant lentement dans le noir à travers des couloirs encombrés, nous avons senti immédiatement que nous n’ avions pas fait tous ces kilomètres pour rien en poussant cette porte.

Le beau temps était revenu dehors et les rayons du soleil inondaient la pièce d’une lumière sublime. Ici aussi le temps s’était arrêté de courir.

Like a window open on the past, a lightwell lets the sunbeams in. A strangely veiled light, petrified in a perfectly still drape. The sole interest of this immense abandoned place was that this room saw thousands of people pass through, meet, mix and sometimes also get lost. Where did they come from?

Where are they now? What have

they become? Do they remember this place and its surprising light that literally fell from the ceiling? From one trajectory to the next, all have passed. Only silence and absence remain now and perhaps also me... and I can’t believe it.

Comme une fenêtre ouverte sur le passé, un puit de lumière laisse pénétrer les rayons du soleil. Une lumière étrangement voilée, pétrifiée dans un drapé parfaitement immobile. Unique intérêt de cet immense endroit abandonné, cette pièce a vu passer, se rencontrer, se mélanger et parfois se perdre aussi des milliers de gens.

D’où venaient-ils ?

Où sont-ils ? Que sont-ils devenus ? Se souviennent-ils de cet endroit et de cette lumière surprenante qui tombait littéralement du plafond.

D’une trajectoire à l’autre, tous sont passés. Seuls restent ici le silence et l’absence et peut-être aussi moi... qui n’en revient pas.

They all went there very early each morning and we only saw them coming back late each night. The factory, this space and time where every day legions of fathers, brothers, neighbours, friends disappeared... and as children we listened out for their footsteps on the basement stairs. Right on time for supper. The factory, a totally abstract universe for a child who needed a great deal of imagination to get an idea of it. A dark silhouette outside the city, roaring, coughing up its grey smoke to which access was strictly forbidden.

It was not until a few years later that many of these

grown-up children went through the gates to the monster which had finally fallen silent. The irresistible need to know and understand where this black dirt under the nails of a father, brother, neighbour or friend actually came from. I particularly like these abandoned factories.

Their smells, the colours, the light and the incredible machinery that can be discovered remind me that they remain one of the only places where reality still surpasses the rather fertile imagination of the child I have remained.

Ils s’y rendaient tous très tôt chaque matin et on ne les voyait revenir que tard chaque soir. L’usine, cet espace spatio temporel où disparaissaient chaque jour des légions de pères, de frères, de voisins, d’amis... et dont enfants nous guettions le bruit des pas dans l’escalier du sous-sol.

Pile poil pour l’heure du souper. L’usine, un univers totalement abstrait pour un enfant qui ne pouvait se la représenter qu’à grand renfort d’imagination. Une silhouette sombre à l’extérieur de la ville, rugissant, toussant ses fumées grises et dont l’accès était strictement interdit. Ce n’est que quelques années plus tard qu’il est arrivé à beaucoup de ces enfants devenus adultes de franchir le grillage d’enceinte du monstre qui s’était tu définitivement. L’irrésistible besoin de savoir et de comprendre d’où venait cette crasse noire au coin des ongles d’un père, d’un frère d’un voisin ou d’un ami.

J’aime tout particulièrement ces usines abandonnées.

Les odeurs, les couleurs, la lumière et les incroyables machineries qu’on peut y découvrir, me rappellent qu’elles restent un des seuls endroits où la réalité dépasse encore l’imagination plutôt fertile de l’enfant que je suis.

Decades went by before I felt the need to enter a church again. Not that I have any bad memories of them, in fact my memories were pretty good and could be summed up in interminable laughter between friends during the Sunday mass under the red nose of the priest who had placed us there to keep an equally red eye on us. Once the service was over, we used to sneak off without a word to escape a second, rather less amusing sermon.

I also have a memory of the 30 cts my mother used to give me for the collection which stayed in my pocket every Sunday to save up for the 3.50 Francs to buy a toy “Matchbox”

car at the local tobacconists’ on the road to the house. It makes me sad but also gives me a wry smile that over the years I regularly measured my faith by admiring the little collection of cars I built up over the years.

Enough to fill the entire drawer of a chest of drawers. Today it is with a free spirit and without any constraints that I enter by the door or window of an abandoned church to admire the light and take some pictures.

I sometimes feel guilty but only when I think to myself that I probably was not the only child to keep the collection money to buy a toy given the state the church is in now.

Des décennies s’étaient passées avant que je n’éprouve à nouveau le besoin d’entrer dans une église. Non pas que j’en aie gardé de mauvais souvenirs. Ils étaient plutôt très bons puisqu’ils pouvaient se résumer à des fous-rires interminables entre copains pendant la messe dominicale sous le nez écarlate du curé, non moins écarlate qui nous avait placé là pour nous avoir à l’œil. Une fois l’office terminé on filait en douce sans demander notre reste pour échapper à un autre sermon, moins marrant celuilà. C’est aussi le souvenir des 30 centimes donnés par ma mère pour la quête qui ne quittaient jamais le fond de ma poche et qui m’ont permis dimanche après dimanche d’économiser les 3,50 francs que coûtait une petite voiture «Matchbox» au tabac du coin, sur la route de la maison. C’est le cœur serré mais le sourire au coin des lèvres qu’il m’arrivera régulièrement plus tard de mesurer ma foi en admirant la petite collection que j’avais constituée au fil des années.

De quoi remplir le tiroir entier d’une commode. Aujourd’hui c’est l’esprit libre et sans aucune contrainte que je franchis à nouveau la porte, ou la fenêtre, d’une église abandonnée pour venir y admirer la lumière et faire quelques photos. Et s’il m’arrive parfois de culpabiliser c’est seulement de me dire que si elle est dans cet état, c’est que je n’étais sans doute pas le seul enfant à garder l’argent de la quête pour acheter une petite voiture.

They saw dancing, singing and people dreaming and gaping or discreetly shedding a tear before bursting out laughing. Town or country cinemas provided so much emotion for whole generations.

People came alone or with their families to forget their world during a screening, loudly chewing « Kréma » candy or crunching a « Miko » strawberry ice-cream.

The usherettes don’t open the doors anymore, the folding seats no longer slam up, these marvellous places have closed their doors to be replaced by modern multiplexes. « Eden, Olympia, Ideal, Rex, Pathé, Scala, Regent... »,

popular or arthouse, the old school cinemas and theatres no longer make money though a handful of them have been saved by passionate volunteers. I particularly like to enter these rooms and sit on a seat if there are any left.

The charm remains intact and the magic only needs a spark to reignite. « Sweets, caramels, ice lollies, chocolates! »

Ils en ont vu danser, ils en ont vu chanter et d’autres encore rêver la bouche grande ouverte quand ils ne versaient pas discrètement une larme avant d’éclater de rire. Théâtres de villes ou cinémas de campagne, ils ont distribué tant d’émotions à des générations entières ! Venus seuls ou en famille, oubliant leur monde l’espace d’une séance, mâchant bruyamment des bonbons « Kréma » ou croquant un « Miko » à la fraise. Les ouvreuses n’ouvrent plus, les strapontins ne claquent plus, ces endroits merveilleux ont fermé leurs portes pour céder la place à des complexes modernes. « Eden, Olympia, Idéal, Rex, Pathé, Scala, Régent... », populaires ou d’essai, les cinémas et théâtres de papa ne font plus recette même si une poignée d’entre eux sont parfois sauvés par quelques bénévoles passionnés. J’aime encore tout particulièrement entrer dans ces salles et m’assoir sur un siège quand il en reste encore. Le charme reste intact et la magie n’attend plus qu’une étincelle pour opérer à nouveau. « Bonbons, caramels, esquimaux, chocolats... ! »

One privilege I particularly appreciate when offered to me is to be able to walk around the corridors of a ruined castle, a palace, a mansion or villa.

The thought that invariably comes to mind is - how is it possible that such majestic places are today in such a state having known so many splendours? There are multiple reasons - problems of inheritances, bankruptcies, fires or earthquakes - the list may be long. It is not for me to judge.

Simply to know how to enjoy the view of these spaces, to enter with the utmost discretion and walk around with the greatest respect. I wait for the day to dawn and try to

understand how the architects and decorators devised such places, invariably admiring the increasing light. I become a châtelain or a viscount during my incognito visit and take the greatest pleasure in imagining what life was like for the occupants, finding the best angles to take pictures and leave discreetly where I came in, gladly leaving my noble title behind when I push back the shutter.

S’il est un privilège que j’apprécie tout particulièrement quand il m’est offert, c’est celui de pouvoir parcourir les couloirs d’un château, d’un palais, d’un manoir où d’une villa tombée en décrépitude.

La pensée qui me vient invariablement à l’esprit est la suivante : comment est-il possible que de tels endroits, aussi majestueux, ayant connus tant de fastes, se trouvent aujourd’hui dans un tel état ? Les raisons sont multiples : incendies, héritages, faillites, séismes... la liste peut être longue. Il ne m’appartient pas de juger. Simplement de savoir profiter de la vue de ces espaces, d’y entrer dans la plus grande discrétion et de m’y promener dans le plus grand respect. Attendre que le jour se lève et comprendre comment les architectes et les décorateurs ont pensé les lieux en admirant invariablement la montée en puissance de la lumière. Châtelain ou vicomte le temps d’une visite incognito, j’y prends le plus grand des plaisirs à imaginer ce qu’était la vie des occupants, trouver les meilleurs angles pour faire quelques photos et repartir discrètement par où j’étais venu, laissant volontiers mon titre de noblesse derrière moi en repoussant le volet.

An abandoned home leaves a strange feeling with visitors.

You detect the presence of the former occupants more intensely than elsewhere...

The sadness of a lonely end to a life or the brutality of a sudden, unexpected disappearance, leaving behind their lives, habits and sometimes their little secrets.

Objects, furniture or the decoration deliver their truth intact

like the different pieces of a tricky puzzle, sometimes even after several decades, between the cobwebs or under a few centimeters of dust.

Such visits are made in silence and with the strange feeling that at any moment someone will burst out of a room to throw you out or offer you a coffee.

Une demeure abandonnée laisse un sentiment assez étrange à celui qui la visite.

On y décèle plus intensément qu’ailleurs la présence des anciens occupants...

La tristesse d’une fin de vie solitaire ou la brutalité d’une disparition soudaine autant qu’inattendue, laissant en plan ce qu’étaient leurs vies, leurs habitudes et parfois leurs petits secrets. Les objets, les meubles, la décoration... comme différentes pièces d’un puzzle hasardeux, livrent leur vérité intacte, parfois même après plusieurs dizaines d’années, entre les toiles d’araignées ou sous quelques centimètres de poussière.

Silencieuse, la visite se fait avec ce sentiment étrange qu’à tout moment quelqu’un va surgir d’une pièce pour vous jeter dehors ou vous proposer un café.

Of all the objects and furniture I have seen, there is one that I find quite regularly. They come in different shapes and styles like the forgotten past companion of music lovers or unknown virtuosos. Whether visiting a castle, mansion, villa, theater or café, its presence changes the tone and interest of a visit. Silences are paralleled by the lost notes which once rang out through these empty rooms. Grand pianos, baby grands, concerts or learners’ pianos, the key-

boards may have been silent for several decades but call you to brush them, caress them and discreetly test their sonority, if there remains one.

They may now be covered in dust but once they filled a family with joy on a festive Sunday, marked the end of a sacred Mass or awakened the curiosity of a child. What is left of these notes today?

Nothing. Nothing but a silence barely disturbed by the passage of a music-loving visitor.

Parmi tous les objets et les meubles que j’ai pu voir, il en est un qui revient assez régulièrement. Revêtant différentes formes et styles comme le compagnon oublié d’autant de mélomanes en herbes que de virtuoses inconnus. Quel que-soit l’endroit visité, château, manoir, villa, théâtre ou café, sa présence change le ton et l’intérêt d’une visite. Les silences se parent des notes perdues qui ont jadis égaillé ces pièces vides. Longs, demi-queue, de galas ou d’étude, les claviers retranchés dans leur mutisme depuis plusieurs décennies vous appellent... à les frôler, les caresser et faire jaillir discrètement leur sonorité, s’il en reste une. Devenus nids à poussière, ils ont pourtant fait jadis, la joie d’une famille les dimanches de fête, marqué la fin d’une messe sacrée ou encore éveillé la curiosité d’un enfant. Que reste-t-il aujourd’hui de ces notes ?

Rien. Rien qu’un silence à peine troublé par le passage d’un visiteur mélomane.

Whatever the place visited, the stairs often reveal the soul of a place and may even be the most interesting thing in certain visits. To immortalize them in a photograph may require the skills of a contortionist or the agility of a tightrope walker. Stepping back, light, height, and above all states of degradation of a staircase mean this exercise of style truly reveals the vision and motivation of an exploratory photographer. I remember a splendid staircase in a mansion in Portugal which was in a very disturbing state of disrepair and felt like it might collapse under our feet at every step. It took me a great

deal of careful effort and cold sweat to climb to the upper landing to take the photograph I had in mind. Then I had to go back down again being just as careful. When I looked at these photos on my computer back home, I realized the risks I had unnecessarily taken. The success and quality of a photo is not measured by the adrenaline or the danger involved in taking it but above all with the eye.

Some will say that this is the place where visitors arriving late meet those who leave early.

Quel que soit l’endroit visité, les escaliers révèlent souvent l’âme d’un lieu, constituant même le principal intérêt de certaines visites. Les immortaliser peut relever de la prouesse du contorsionniste voire de l’agilité de l’équilibriste.

Le recul, la lumière, la hauteur et surtout l’état de dégradation d’une cage d’escalier font de cet exercice de style un véritable révélateur de la vision et de la motivation du photographe d’exploration.

J’ai le souvenir d’une cage d’escalier splendide dans un manoir au Portugal.

Celle-ci était dans un état de dégradation très inquiétant et menaçait de s’effondrer sous nos pas à chaque marche franchie. C’est avec beaucoup de précautions et non sans sueurs froides que j’ai pu parvenir à me hisser sur le palier supérieur pour réaliser la vue que j’avais à l’esprit. Sans compter qu’il fallait ensuite redescendre avec la même prudence sans relâcher sa vigilance. C’est en regardant ces photos sur mon ordinateur une fois rentré que je mesurais les risques inutilement pris. La réussite et la qualité d’une photo ne se mesurent pas à l’adrénaline ou au prix du danger encouru, mais avant tout avec l’œil.

Certains vous dirons que c’est l’endroit où les visiteurs qui arrivent en retard croisent ceux qui partent en avance.

Walking through the corridors of an empty hospital is always a rather particular ordeal involving a mix of contradictory feelings. Firstly of being in a place where people were healed and cured. Then of being in the presence of spirits who suffered between these walls. And it is by far the second impression that prevails the most often.

Sanatoriums, asylums, clinics, maternity, civil or military hospitals... Corridors after corridors, halls after rooms, silences inevitably burden themselves with long cries and shouts which never crossed the walls of these macabre buildings. Everything we hide, everything we keep

quiet, everything we dare to imagine arises here to express the fears deep within each of us. The air seems heavier than elsewhere, contaminated by a virus against which time has not been able to constitute an antidote. Here, vegetation pushes against a window to bring a little colour to the decrepit white walls. There, it invades a balcony plaiting greenery between the wheels of a wheelchair that seems to wait for its last owner to return. One often wonders what happened to the people who lived there. Here, we keep quiet the answer which comes to mind and hold our breath until the nearest exit.

Parcourir les couloirs d’un hôpital vide est toujours une épreuve assez particulière où se mêlent des sentiments contradictoires. Celui d’être dans un endroit où on soignait et guérissait des gens. Celui d’être en présence d’esprits qui ont souffert entre ces murs. Et c’est de très loin le second qui l’emporte le plus souvent. Sanatorium, asile psychiatrique, clinique, maternité, hôpital civile ou militaire... couloirs après couloirs, salles après salles, les silences se chargent inévitablement de longues plaintes et de cris qui n’ont jamais franchi les murailles de ces édifices macabres.

Tout ce que l’on cache, tout ce que l’on tait, tout ce que l’on n’ose imaginer surgit ici pour exprimer les peurs et les craintes au fond de chacun de nous. L’air y semble plus lourd qu’ailleurs, contaminé par un virus contre lequel le temps n’a pas su constituer d’antidote. Ici, la végétation pousse une fenêtre pour déposer un peu de couleur sur les murs blancs décrépis.

Là, elle envahit un balcon, tressant ses nattes de verdure entre les roues d’un fauteuil qui semble attendre le retour de son dernier occupant. On se demande souvent où sont passés les gens qui vivaient là. Ici, on tait la réponse intérieure qui nous est faite et on retient son souffle jusqu’à la sortie la plus proche.

PARTIE DE CACHE-CASSE Que reste-t-il de ces odeurs de graisse, des effluves de gasoil... de cette peur de salir mes doigts et mes vêtements quand il m’arrivait d’aller traîner dans le garage paternel ?

Prudemment, j’avançais dans l’antre sombre, esquivant les flaques suspectes qui en jonchaient le sol. Un peu plus profondément à chacune de mes incursions... Je savais bien que cela m’était interdit. C’était simplement plus fort que moi.

Il fallait que j’avance, les yeux grands ouverts sur ce monde étrange où l’on s’affairait à gagner sa croûte à grand renfort de fanfares métalliques et de gazs d’échappement.

Puis fatalement, je l’apercevais, au détour d’un compresseur exalté, penché au bord du déséquilibre dans les entrailles d’un magnifique spécimen endormi, la bouche grande ouverte, comme si la bête allait l’engloutir, lui, ses outils et ses grosses godasses de sécurité crasseuses. « Papa ?! ».

What is left of the smell of oil or diesel... the fear of getting my hands and clothes dirty when I used to hang around in my father’s garage?

Carefully, I advanced into the dark dodging the suspicious puddles all around the floor.

I went a little further each time...

I knew it was forbidden. It was just stronger than me. I had to go forward with my eyes wide open into this strange world where livings were made with metallic fanfares and exhaust fumes. Then, inevitably, I saw him working on a exalted compressor, leaning perilously

into the entrails of a magnificent sleeping specimen with his mouth wide open as if the beast was going to engulf him, his tools and his big dirty safety shoes. Dad?!

These smells, colours, lights and sounds are always present in my memory. They come back to me whenever I photograph an old garage, a breaker’s yard or a car-wreck buried under plants.

And I get strange little idea that if he had been there, he would have fixed everything in no time at all. Top!

Ces odeurs, ces couleurs ces lumières et ces bruits sont toujours bien présents dans mon souvenir. Je viens les retrouver une fois de plus lorsqu’il m’arrive de photographier un ancien garage, une casse automobile ou une épave enfouie sous la végétation.

Et cette idée un peu étrange que s’il avait été encore là, il vous aurait retapé tout cela en deux temps trois mouvements.
