New York City Transit launched the plan of systematically upgrade the subway station hardware and make the subway system completely accessible. di Domenico + Partners is teamig up with Stantec on the feasibility study of over 150 stations across the five boroughs. Scope of work includes on site investigation, documentation of existing conditions, provide accessibility solution in drawing format and presentation to the authority.

While some stations share the same typology, each station is in an unique condition and faces different surrounding contexts and therefore makes every station a distinctive challenge. Solutions often involve installing new elevators and providing supportive stair or ramp. The attention the spatial organization in each station, ADA standard, and how is the addition structure interacting with the environment within is critical.

di Domenico + Partner is working on the new MTA exit at Queens Plaza. The project provides stair and elevator within the MTA easement in a new mixed-use building, and a temporary stairs to maintain access to the station while the existing building was demolished – connecting the sidewalk level to the pedestrian walkway over Queens Plaza North. Structural concrete has now been completed and interior finish work of the space is in progress.

Queensboro Plaza Station is a major transit hub which serves the N, W, and 7 trains in Long Island City. The existing MTA easement were kept and modified by negotiating with the developer, in order to provide the necessary service. The project involves close coordination with the base building architect, consultants from various disciplines, the elevator manufacturer, and the wayfinding department of MTA.
Particular attention to detail was paid to the coordination at the interface between the base building elevation and the MTA-owned stair. The effort results in a generous, well-lit space that provides clear circulation direction and a sense of belonging to the high volume of daily ridership. Completion of the building with the new MTA entrance, including stairs and an elevator, is anticipated for the 4th Quarter of 2024.

The new 42nd Street Connector was envisioned to ease circulation between two high-trafficked stations, 42nd StTimes Square and Bryant Park, via a new underground corridor configured from “found space,” granting access to four additional trains. The new corridor was developed by repurposing abandoned track, underutilized infrastructure spaces, and navigating the labyrinth of existing underground areas.
Through the integration of updated technology and new stairways to the 6th Avenue line platforms, the passageway serves as a transformative infrastructural addition, completing the unification of three 42nd Street stations and increasing total access to an unprecedented 16 subway lines.
An expansive permanent artwork by Nick Cave, commissioned by MTA Arts & Design, runs 360 linear feet of the passageway, spanning the Connector’s North and East walls. Along with the architecture, the 42nd Street Connector engage the customer in a colorful visual journey and demonstrate the potential for infrastructure to inspire, inform, and invigorate the passenger experience.
The Siza House (Reception House) at Taifong Golf Course is the first major project of Alvaro Siza in Taiwan. The original course has been established for over 30 years and the club house is in dire need of a thorough renovation to serve the customers. While the renovation of the club house proceeds, the golf course wished to maintain its daily function. Therefore, a new club house and a temporary reception house are planned out in phases of construction in order to keep the services running and provide necessary support to the players.
The first phase of the construction is to build the temporary reception house next to the original club house. After the reception house is completed, the old club house will be demolished and replaced with a 4-times big, well-rounded functioning new club house in place . As soon as the new club house finishes, it will become the main serving building for customers, and the reception house will be kept as a supporting facility.
Nestled into the slope, The Siza House has four stories along the Golf Course approach avenue and embraces the visitors, but only one story where it is level with the Green. It features exposed concrete, angular cuts, open spaces, and solid surfaces, with shadows and reflections formed by light falling on the building from above. The Siza House has all the necessary facilities that allow it to run as a fullfunctioning club house with changing rooms, shower rooms, dining rooms, and cart parking among other social event venues and administrative offices.

In the context of a very dramatic landscape, the building perfectly blends into its background and set in a sequence that facilitates the movements that are specific to the game: the waiting, the warm up, the beginning and ending. The hierarchy and overall planning of space relationships were established through careful coordination among the client, the architect, and the golf course management team. Varies spaces are fragmented into individual geometries, complementing one another while reducing the massing of the building at the same time. “Nothing is haphazard, nothing is unjustified. The relationship between space and function is everything.“ as stated by the architect, The Siza House is undoubtfully an excellent incarnation of Form follows Function.
Taitung Art Complex is a project launched by Taitung City Government, aiming to establish a culture park that welcomes visitors to enjoy the intimate relationship with artists and participate in culture events. The government wish to offer facilities to support and preserve the various form of art from the aboriginal people in the county. Along with the existing performing space, this project offers more opportunities of culture and social events happening in the city.
Taitung is the least developed county in the country, therefore this project strive not to create huge building volume to contain the required program. Instead, the team break down the required program into individual building blocks and scatter them on the site, in order to create an atmosphere of an art village where visitors and the artists are able to have a closer interaction and deeper understanding of each form of art.

Digital images has become the primary and essential medium for human to recognize the world. In a digital image, each pixel contains its own RGB color information and accumulatively construct a recognizable image. This project interpret this mechanism to an unconventional approach of analyzing the urban context by its spatial properties, and further construct habitable spaces that seamlessly blend into the existing environment.
The methodology pixelate the city into fragments and analyze the properties contained within. Each fragment is consist of its own spatial properties, which can be recognized as the RGB information in a pixel. The intensity of “Outdoor Activity”, “Green Coverage” and “Recreation Activities” are chosen to be the three prime parameter and being mapped in gray scale and indicates the intensity of the attribute.

Through previous analysis, several fragments are determined where the property has its highest intensity. The goal is to fill these fragments into the site and eliminate the heterogeneous vacant area according to the surrounding conditions. By inserting these space fragments, the construction removes the blank area and make the spacial properties distributed in harmony and blend into the adjacent environment.
The multi-function space is the outcome of an algorithm. This process considers the spatial properties of the urban fragments and juxtapose them according to their similarities. Instead of visually coherence, the generated space blend into the environment according to the continuous spacial experience.

Architecture has always been digital in terms of quantifing and indexing human interaction with space and program by categories and dichotomies. Elenemtal Procedures argues that architecture can be conceptualized as a digital composition, where individually significant objects aggregate and compose larger constructs of space and form. By specifying a curation of architectural elements adn manipulations, Elemental Procedures acknowledges and subverts the significance of thee elements, and speculating on new potentials of architecture.

ELEMENTS
Elenemtal Procedures intersects the cultural coding of these elements’ functions and organizations with a digital coding, manipulating the geometry unrestricted by gravity, physical materiality, solidity, or rigidity, as well as being unburdened by the preconceived biases of organization and orientation. Then the designers investigate and interpret the results, capitalizing on a human’s ingenuity, creativity, and physical understanding.

Elemental Procedures creates a symbiotic relationship between the digital tools and the analog impulses of the designer, expanding on the capacity of each. It creates an architecture that is both physically and conceptually between things, existing somewhere between physical and digital, analog and indexical, familiar and foreign.
