About One of the most familiar birds around the world is the sparrow (tiu in Maori). Because they are so common and without brilliant plumage, we hardly take notice of them. But if we do take a closer look, sparrows have a subtle beauty. Furthermore, they are very social and protective of their young, much like humans. It’s when we stop to consider the everyday that we find the beauty in life. Knit in a lustrous merino and silk blend, Tiu is anything but ordinary. A wide front lace panel elevates this effortless shell to extraordinary. Decreases from hem to bust enhance the top for a flattering A-line silhouette you’ll want to wear every day. YARN

Please take a moment to give the entire pattern a read-through to understand the layout and flow of the instructions. CONSTRUCTION: This drop-sleeve top is worked bottom up, in the round to the armholes where the front and back portions are knit flat. Stitches are then picked up around the collar and armhole openings to work a garter stitch trim. The shape of the top is a-line, meaning that you will be decreasing from the hips all the way to the underarms. Three-Needle BO: Face the right sides of the fabric inward, with WS facing out. Make sure there is an equal number of stitches on each needle. With a third needle, knit together one stitch from each needle, *knit together one stitch from each needle, pass first stitch worked over second, repeat from * across to last stitch. Cut working yarn and pull through last stitch to secure. P/U Stitches: To “pick up and knit,” insert the working needle under both legs (or one side if it suits you) of the V-shaped stitch. Wrap the yarn around the tip of the needle, and pull the yarn back through the loops and onto your needle. Nupp Stitch: When working this stitch, it helps to work it loosely. 1. Insert your right hand needle into the stitch and knit without slipping the worked stitch off the left hand needle. 2. Yarn over. copyright © 2018 | ArohaKnits LLC

1. Knit into the same stitch, still leaving the worked stitch on the LH needle. 2. Yarn over. 3. Knit again into the same stitch, this time slipping it off. You will have created five stitches from the one stitch. 4. On the next row, p5tog (if working in the rnd, k5tog). It may helps to have a finer needle tip that can easily catch all the stitches. FRONT You will now be working back and forth in rows. Transfer the back stitches to a stitch holder or scrap yarn. You will be working over the first 95 [107, 119, 133, 145] sts. While still working the middle lace motif as established, work pattern straight for 48 [50, 52, 54, 56] rows. Then work the two rows below: Row 1 (RS): K32 [36, 40, 45, 49], then BO the center 31 [35, 39, 43, 47] sts, k32 [36, 40, 45, 49]. Row 2 (WS): P until BO in the center. You will be working the next section back and forth over this set of sts. FRONT NECKLINE SHAPING - RIGHT SHOULDER Using the chart below, complete the right shoulder.

Place sts on st holder and set aside. Armhole will measure 7.25 (7.5, 7.75, 8.25, 8.75) in./18.5 (19, 19.75, 21, 22.25) cm. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-in./15 cm tail. FRONT NECKLINE SHAPING - LEFT SHOULDER With RS facing, reattach yarn on the left armhole edge, where the remaining live sts are. Using the chart below, complete the left shoulder.

Place sts on st holder and set aside. Armhole will measure 7.25 (7.5, 7.75, 8.25, 8.75) in./18.5 (19, 19.75, 21, 22.25) cm. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-in./15 cm tail. BACK You will work the back half of the top in the same manner as the front, except you will not work the middle lace panel, but all in St st.

JOINING THE SHOULDERS Turn the garment inside out so that the right sides of the fabric face each other. Making sure there is an equal amount of sts on each side, use the Three-Needle BO to seam the two sets of shoulders together. Block the garment to measurements and lay flat to dry. EDGING AND FINISHING Pick up sts around the neckline and work in garter st for five rnds (start and end with a purl rnd). Bind off neckline sts using the standard BO (optional: you can use a needle size/.5 mm larger than gauge needle to loosen up the opening. I would not recommend a stretchy BO for this as it can cause the opening to lose its structure and hold). Pick up sts around the armholes, picking up 3 sts every four rows and work in garter st for seven rnds (start and end with a purl rnd). Bind off sts using the standard BO (with the same optional instructions and caveat as before). Block the garment a second time, if so desired, and weave in ends.
