The Apple Award honors WILLIAM IVEY LONG
n 2001, the Nederlander family celebrated 40 years of presenting Broadway shows at the Fisher Theatre. That year, Harry Nederlander joined with Wayne State University’s Maggie Allessee Department of Theatre and Dance to create an endowment. Named after Mr. Nederlander’s mother whose warmth and hospitality was appreciated by the stars that performed at Nederlander venues since the 1920s, the Sarah Applebaum Nederlander Visiting Artist Award created a fund to bring award-winning Broadway producers, actors, musicians and designers to Detroit providing insight and inspiration for future generations of musical theatre artists. Since its inception, many well-known Broadway talents have been honored with an Apple Award including Neil Simon, Stephan Schwartz, the late Elaine Stritch and, most recently, Garth Fagan. This season, Broadway In Detroit is honored to be able to join the University in honoring legendary costume designer William Ivey Long with an Apple Award while his Tony Award-winning designs sweep the stage of the Detroit Opera House in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Mr. Long will receive the award during a private reception on Thursday, February 18. During his visit to Detroit he will also meet with theatre design students and staff from Wayne State University. Mr. Long has a long list of incredible accomplishments including 15 Tony Nominations and six Tony Awards for Cinderella,

hen the first national tour of the new musical If/Then arrives at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre March 29, it will bring some familiar names with it. Original Broadway cast member Jackie Burns (If/ Then, Wicked, Hair), Tamyra Gray (“American Idol,” Rent) and Matthew Hydzik (Side Show, West Side Story, Grease), joined Original Broadway cast member Anthony Rapp (Rent, Six Degrees of Separation, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown) in the production now on tour. If/Then is an original Broadway musical which reunites composer Tom Kitt, book writer/lyricist Brian Yorkey, and director Michael Greif, the creative team behind the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical, Next to Normal. It follows two distinct storylines in the life of Elizabeth, a city planner who moves back to New York to restart her life in the city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth’s life splits into two parallel paths. If/Then follows both stories simultaneously as this modern woman faces the intersection of choice and chance. Jackie Burns will play Elizabeth, a woman on the verge of turning 40 whose smallest decisions or most random occurrences will impact her world in ways she never dreamt possible. Jackie recently played the role of Elizabeth in If/Then on Broadway, and has also played the iconic role of Elphaba in Wicked, both on Broadway and in the First National Tour. She starred in the 2009 Tony Award-winning revival of Hair, and also appeared in the original Off-Broadway cast of Rock of Ages. Anthony Rapp will play Lucas, an old college friend of Elizabeth’s, who reconnects with her when she moves back to New York City. Anthony is best known for originating the role of Mark Cohen in Jonathan Larson’s Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical,

CRITICAL ACCLAIM for If/Then on Broadway: “THE BEST MUSICAL OF THE YEAR! In its formal daring, and in the intelligence of its execution, If/Then moves into new territory with intense and thrilling results. Every single thing in this show is new—you absolutely never know what is going to happen, right up to the last, powerfully moving beat.”— New York Magazine “A SMART, DEEPLY TOUCHING AND BIG-HEARTED new musical. Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s score is invested with melodic urgency, bringing you to tears or breathlessness.” —Washington Post “A THOROUGHLY FASCINATING, INTELLECTUALLY AND MUSICALLY RICH new musical. It is not an adaptation of anything, but a very compelling and involving idea. Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s beautiful score hits an especially sweet spot, keeping the audience in its pocket. It is a zesty, savvy and ambitious original.”—Chicago Tribune
“THE BRAVEST new musical in a long time. It is one of the very few new Broadway shows that actually looks and Vita, who will play Anne, Daren A. Herbert, sounds like the world of today.” —Toronto Star who will play Stephen, and Marc de la Cruz, who will play David. emember Love Story? If you’re like me, you remember the book and movie, both written by the classics professor Erich Segal, vividly. You remember how Harvard-Radcliffe it was. You remember sobbing your eyes out, and how great that felt. Most of all, you remember how beautiful the leads, Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw, were. When I think of the 1970 movie, I see the montages of the lovers frolicking in the snow, in Cambridge and in Central Park. Today, Ms. MacGraw is still striking, and Mr. O’Neal remains handsome, but we can see the lives they’ve lived: Mr. O’Neal is using a cane to help steady himself after tearing his Achilles tendon, and the ravenhaired Ms. MacGraw is mostly gray. Their enviable bone structures have been softened
time on Broadway. Indeed, some of the rotating cast members didn’t get their chances to read at the table. Ms. Nugent suggested the O’Neal/MacGraw pairing to Broadway Across America, the largest presenter of touring shows, and with the O.K.’s of the playwright and director, they got to it. While Love Letters is no sequel to Love Story, it feels cut from similar tweed, and — this has to be said—it is the better written of the two. Andrew Makepeace Ladd III could be Oliver Barrett IV of Love Story, though he attends Yale and joins the service before he heads to Harvard Law School. Melissa Gardner is a Fairfield County black sheep bohemian, though unlike Jenny Cavilleri, the feisty scholarship student in the Segal tale, she is rich, as she frequently, and bluntly, re-

by the four decades they’ve spent since Love Story, and by some hard living on both of their parts: good breaks, bad breaks, scandal and divorce. He’s in a blazer and buttondown shirt, and she is in an Indian kurta and white jeans, wearing a chic assortment of silver jewelry. Their easy affection is apparent. At a pre-tour news conference they are asked the usual anodyne questions (“Do you still have chemistry?”), they playfully hug, swat and pat each another. Mr. O’Neal cracks one selfdeprecating remark after another—“She’s one of the few women who will still talk to me”—which make Ms. MacGraw laugh till she snorts. The two had been in touch off and on over the years, mostly via letters and phone calls. Then, as part of a feature last year in The Hollywood Reporter, the stars of Love Story—the quintessential movie romance, at least until Nicholas Sparks picked up his laptop—were brought together for an interview. The accompanying images affected Nelle Nugent, a veteran producer who produced Love Letters on Broadway last year. Despite positive reviews for the play (“Deceptively simple and quietly moving”—The New York Times), that run closed after three months. It was the oft-produced play’s first
minds Andy. Through letters, post cards, invitations and notes of apology, Mr. Gurney’s play chronicles a 50-year friendship of two loving friends and reveals a woody wagon full of regrets. Back in 1970, Mr. Mosher, the director of Love Letters, was thinking more about the Vietnam War and Kent State from his perch at Oberlin College than sentimental me was, and knew about Love Story only as a reference point. He didn’t see the movie until later, and even now he’s surprised by the big effect the stars still make together. “Ryan and Ali trigger a very powerful beholder’s share,” Mr. Mosher said. “Their impact on our psyches happened together, and they are very generous performers.” I agree with Mr. O’Neal; the actors are doing what they’re meant to do, using one another’s encouragement and affection as life support. I forget that they are senior citizens as they take the stage in Love Letters. They’re young again, laughing at their private jokes and playing in the snow. Lisa Birnbach, a New York writer, is the author of The Official Preppy Handbook and True Prep. Love Letters is at the Fisher Theatre April 12–17. For tickets, please see our ad at left. 21
