ver fifty million people in 325 cities around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show. An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited twenty years earlier. ABBA’s songs propel the story over twentyfour chaotic, magical hours as new love blooms and old romances are rekindled. 4

SYNOPSIS ACT I Dreamland, an after-hours club in downtown Saigon, is getting ready for the first show of the night. A group of Marines enter the bar looking for a good time. Among them are two friends, Chris and John. The club owner, known as the Engineer, pushes the newest girl, Kim, forward to solicit the Dreamland crowd. Chris can’t help but be astounded by her innocence and beauty. John bargains with the Engineer to secure Kim for his friend. After she dances, Chris and Kim head to a tiny room overlooking the moonlit city. As Chris prepares to leave the next morning, he hands Kim money, but she refuses. When Chris asks why, Kim gets angry with him and starts telling him about her parents’ deaths, the man she was engaged to, and the story of her village being burned which led her to Saigon and to the club. Kim and Chris fall in love and the couple lives in bliss for a short time. As they celebrate their new love, Kim’s childhood arranged fiancée, Thuy, appears. He declares that Kim is his until she dies, cursing them as he leaves. Flashforward three years, during which time the Viet Cong have taken over Saigon and the U.S. have left Vietnam. Thuy, now a Commissar, demands that the Engineer take him to Kim. She is now living in a shanty village with her son, Tam, who was fathered by Chris. Thuy draws a knife to kill Tam, and in her anguish, Kim shoots him. In fear for their lives, Kim flees with Tam and the Engineer to Bangkok. ACT II Back in America, John now works on behalf of the Bui Doi children. They are children fathered by American men during the war. John learns that Kim has escaped to Bangkok, and that Chris is the father of her son. Chris, who has married since he returned to the U.S., is told the truth about Tam. Chris and Ellen leave for Bangkok with John to assume financial responsibility for Tam. John finds Kim and tells her where Chris is staying. She goes to the hotel, sure she will be reunited with her love and they will start their new life in America. She is greeted at the door by Chris’ wife, Ellen. Kim tries to convince Ellen to take Tam back to the states but Ellen refuses. Chris agrees to support Kim and Tam in Bangkok. John knows that Kim will not accept this future. Back at the nightclub, Kim prepares Tam’s things. Knowing that Chris and Ellen won’t let Tam go with them, Kim makes the ultimate sacrifice to ensure her son will live the American Dream. 12

ALAIN BOUBLIL (Lyrics) first musical, La Revolution Française in 1973, marked his transition from songwriting to musical theatre and the start of his collaboration with Claude-Michel Schönberg with the hit album that became the first ever staged French musical. His idea of writing a musical version of Les Misérables brought them together again in 1978. The acclaimed show was written over a two-year period and recorded as an album before its opening at the Palais de Sports in Paris in September 1980. In 1983, Mr. Boublil met Cameron Mackintosh which led to his first London production Abbacadabra (a musical fairy-tale set to ABBA music) and to working with ClaudeMichel and directors and writers on the English language adaptation of Les Misérables. The show has subsequently opened in 19 countries and 14 languages. Among the many awards Mr. Boublil has received were two Tony Awards in 1987 for Best Score and Best Book for the NY production and a 1988 Grammy for the Best Original Broadway Cast Recording which he co-produced with Claude-Michel Schönberg. Miss Saigon opened on September 20, 1989 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London and on April 11, 1991 in NY. The show has also played in Tokyo and Toronto with future productions scheduled for Sydney, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany. Mr. Boublil will maintain a close association with all the international productions of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon while working with Claude-Michel on the

WHO’S WHO screenplays for motion picture versions of both musicals. CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHÖNBERG (Music) is a successful record producer and songwriter who began his collaboration with Alain Boublil in 1973, writing the very first French musical, La Revolution Française. Mr. Schönberg played the role of Louis XVI in that production and also co-produced the double-gold record album of the show. In 1974, he recorded an album, singing his own compositions and lyrics, which included the number one hit single “Le Premier Pas.” In 1980, after two years’ work on the score, Mr. Schönberg and Mr. Boublil’s musical Les Misérables opened in Paris, where it was seen by more than 1.5 million people. In 1983, Mr. Schönberg produced an opera album in Paris with Julia Migenes Johnson and the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Following work on the London production of Les Misérables (the 3rd longest running musical in British theatre history), Mr. Schönberg co-produced the double-platinum London cast album and became involved in casting all the major overseas productions of the show, including the American, Japanese and Australian companies. He won two coveted Tony Awards, for Best Score and Book, for the Broadway production of Les Misérables and a Grammy Award for the Best Original Cast Recording, which he co-produced with Alain Boublil. He also worked closely on the symphonic recording of the show. His score for Miss Saigon, again written in collaboration with Alain Boublil, is now repeating the international success story of Les Misérables. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and again bringing together many members of the creative team behind Les Misérables, Miss Saigon opened with huge success at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London in September 1989, in NY in April 1991, in Tokyo in May 1992 and in Chicago (the first national U.S. tour) in November 1992. Future productions will open in Sydney, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany. War Horse’s Spectacular Journey
Tony-Award winning stage spectacle moves families, audience members to tears.
ar Horse, the astounding theatrical W experience exerts its pull from the moment the title character, Joey, first trots
on stage as a foal, petted by his owner and best friend, 15-year old Albert. The audience gasps, aware that Joey is a puppet, not a real horse, but captivated by the way he shudders and whinnies at Albert’s loving touch. Joey’s lifelike eyes, shining and reflective, draw us into the soul of his journey; as the evening progresses, and Albert sets out to rescue Joey after he has been sold to the English cavalry, we find ourselves carried along and hoping for Joey to make it home. It’s that kind of emotional power that has made War Horse an international phenomenon, sweeping up audiences and awards around the world. Set during the First World

War, War Horse combines a powerful story with thrilling stagecraft and music. In addition, it showcases what may be the most inventive use of puppetry ever seen on stage. Soon after meeting him as a young horse, we watch in amazement as an adult Joey, seven feet tall, materializes before our eyes. Two puppet masters working inside Joey’s frame (built of light, malleable cane) raise and lower his torso, letting out forceful breaths, while a third manipulates his ears, lifting and pulling them back to register tender shades of emotion. While War Horse takes audiences through World War I battles, it’s relevance comes from our awareness that, nearly a century after the start of the First World War, families are still being separated by armed conflict. “We talk a lot about the history of the war,” remarks Chris Harper, producer for the National Theatre of Great Britain (which first staged War Horse in London), “but at the heart of the show it’s just a family, struggling to deal with life. The thing that’s exciting about War Horse is that it appeals to lots of generations. We see grandparents bringing their kids, wanting to explain the history from their own personal journeys with World War II or more recent conflicts. It’s a production that brings the family together.” Will Albert find Joey in time? As War Horse reaches its beautiful climax, the hopes of parents, children, and beloved friends— both onstage and off—merge into a shared experience, as tissues are drawn from pockets and eyes glisten with tears. “We get people coming back again and again,” Harper explains, “and they always have the same reaction. It awakens something in you. War Horse makes grown people cry.”—David Freedland War Horse at the Fisher Theatre Dec. 17–Jan. 5. On sale now; please see ad, page 6. 23
