Heartbeat of Home a stage-thumping success Review by Richard Ouzounian, The Toronto Star 4 stars ★★★★ out of 4

S

urprise is the best element that a piece of live entertainment can possess, and Heartbeat of Home, which had its North American premiere at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, is positively jam-packed with the nicest kind of surprises. If you were a fan of Riverdance, you’re probably expecting more of the same, since this show is created by the same duo— John McColgan and Moya Doherty—who launched that earlier hard-shoe phenomenon and sent it spinning around the world like a step-dancing satellite. And rest assured, there’s a lot of Irish dancing in Heartbeat of Home, performed with rat-a-tat-tat precision by a dynamic cast. If you’re a newcomer to the form, you’ll be blown away. If you’re already a fan, you’ll fall in love all over again. But McColgan and Doherty are canny showmen and they’ve expanded the terpsichorean world of their earlier success to reflect some of the numerous ethnic changes that have occurred both in their native Dublin and around the world. The famous “40 shades of green” that mark the Emerald Isle have added a whole palette filled with browns and blacks to the colour mix, reflecting the tides of Latin and AfroCuban immigration over the past 20 years since Riverdance first opened. You wouldn’t know it at first. The amazing lighting by Peter Canning begins by picking 4

out a series of step-dancers, one by one, with laser-like precision. Their tight black clothing, the Uzi-blast sound of their feet, the pride of their carriage are all familiar and yet exhilarating. But before you can get too comfortable, the music changes tempo, the lighting grows brighter and a team of Latin dancers join the mix, with the Irish adapting their steps to accompany them. And then a troupe of Afro-Cuban artists slash across the stage, creating the same dramatic effect that made the opening number of Ragtime—for example—so spectacular, as three different cultures existed separately and yet together. From there on, there’s no turning back. We are on a journey from a small island where people of many cultures exist separately to a larger body of land, where they can all live their lives in happy coexistence. There are no spoken words needed, and even the lyrics of Joseph O’Connor to the stirring music of Brian Byrne offer us feelings rather than plot points. We’re in the theatre to be carried away by the power of music, dance and visual artistry, with the projections of David Torpey adding an element of magic that keeps things in constantly pleasing motion. It may sound like a shallow thing to say, but this is probably the most physically attractive company that I can

recall anywhere. To paraphrase the famous line from Cabaret: “The boys are beautiful, the girls are beautiful, even the orchestra is beautiful.” And the fact that this beauty is so ethnically varied only adds to its potency. The packaging of Heartbeat of Home is first-class, to be sure, but the dancing is world-class, and that’s what we come for. David Bolger is in charge of the overall choreography/musical staging, and his ability to co-ordinate all the various styles so that they never seem like a step-dancing mash-up is breathtaking. And pride of place must also go to the great John Carey, who has taken the minimalist form of Irish dance and found seemingly limitless variations within it. Everyone who sees the show will have their own favourite performers, but I was particularly impressed by Bobby Hodges, a young man who combines the energy of Gene Kelly with the grace of Fred Astaire and offers the charm of both. Ciara Sexton is the kind of dark-haired pixie you might imagine playing Tinker Bell in a Dublin production of Peter Pan, but her skills are mischievous as well as elfish. And Clare Craze, the Latin dance captain, is a

ball of kinetic energy and coiled sexuality whom I defy you to take your eyes off. She’s tremendous. But they all are, as is the entire event called Heartbeat of Home. It’s a spectacular celebration of the human spirit that provides non-stop entertainment as well. That’s quite the combination. are on sale now for Heartbeat of Home at the • Tickets Fisher Theatre March 18–23; see ad below.

GEORGE GERSHWIN (Composer) was born in Brooklyn on September 26, 1898. George wrote 22 musical comedies, most with

his brother Ira. From his early career George had ambitions to compose serious music, and his classical masterpieces include Rhapsody in Blue. In the late ’20s George became fascinated by DuBose Heyward’s novel Porgy, recognizing it was a perfect vehicle for opera using jazz and blues idioms. Porgy and Bess opened in Boston on September 30, 1935, and had its Broadway debut two weeks later. In 1937 George was at the height of his career. While working on the score of The Goldwyn Follies in Hollywood, he collapsed, and on July 11, died of a brain tumor. DuBOSE & DOROTHY HEYWARD (Libretto/Lyrics). DuBose Heyward (1885–1940) was a native and life-long resident of Charleston, South Carolina. In 1923 Heyward married Dorothy Hartzell Kuhns (1890-1961), an aspiring author from Ohio. His novel Porgy, was published with great success in 1925. Dorothy inspired, and collaborated in, the transformation of Porgy into a play, which ran a total of 367 performances on Broadway. The Heywards later collaborated with George and Ira Gershwin in the creation of the opera, Porgy and Bess, contributing the libretto, based largely on the play, and co-writing many of the songs, including “Summertime.”

IRA GERSHWIN (Lyrics), the first songwriter to receive a Pulitzer Prize (Of Thee I Sing, 1932), was born in New York in 1896. He wrote hundreds of songs for Broadway and Hollywood, the majority with his brother, George, but many in collaboration with composers Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Harry Warren, Burton Lane, and Vernon Duke, among others. Nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Song, Ira also took great pride in his contributions to Porgy and Bess (1935), and in his acclaimed book, Lyrics on Several Occasions (1959). Ira died in 1983 at the age of 86. DIANE PAULUS (Director) is Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard. Broadway: A.R.T.’s Pippin (2013 Tony Award  Revival), A.R.T.’s The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012 Tony Award-Revival), and The Public Theater’s HAIR (2009 Tony Award-Revival). A.R.T.: The Donkey Show, Prometheus Bound, Tod Machover’s Death and the Powers: The Robots’ Opera, Best of Both Worlds, and Johnny Baseball. Opera: The Magic Flute, Il mondo della luna, Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, L’incoronazione di Poppea, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, and Orfeo. Other work: Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna. SISTER ACT THE MUSICAL AND HOW W by Matt Wolf

O

ne simple gesture said it all: there it was, August 2010, and Whoopi Goldberg had walked on stage for the press performance of her limited run as the Mother Superior in Sister Act, as a capacity crowd at the London Palladium cheered and hollered in a most gratifyingly un‐English way. Taking in the applause, the star put a finger to her lips in order to silence the crowd. The show, as they say, must go on, and it was time to do so. That outpouring of affection wasn’t lost on a woman who has been wowing audiences in all art forms since the legendary New York director Mike Nichols first brought Whoopi to attention, presenting the then little‐ known performer’s Broadway debut in 1984 at the Lyceum Theatre. Since that time, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her screen debut in The Color Purple; went on to win an Oscar five years later for her indelible supporting turn in Ghost; fronted various awards shows (including the Oscars, where one will never forget the sight of Whoopi abseiling down on to the stage like some madcap Mary Poppins only to announce herself as “the African Queen”); and has become a daytime TV personality in America courtesy her co‐hosting duties on “The View.” But Sister Act occupies a special place in the Whoopi canon, and not just because the source films that inspired the stage musical made a lot of money—more than $230 million in the case of the first one—and were also lots of fun. As that Palladium vignette served to indicate, here was a screen phenomenon returning to her theatre roots in ®

®

16

front of an adoring crowd: Whoopi’s connection to the material remains undeniable and strong. Let’s just say that even when not in the production Whoopi hovers over the stage musical as more than a coproducer: a sort of beneficent, and inspirational, patron saint. Sister Act, of course, tells the story of Deloris van Cartier, the nightclub singer‐ turned‐nun who has become one of those characters that audiences know without needing to be reminded of the title of the film itself; Celie from The Color Purple is another. But when talk turned to fashioning the movie anew for the stage, Whoopi had no intention of ever appearing in it; instead, she was there to preside over something, in her view, “brand new, fresh and exciting,” that could mint a young leading lady‐turned‐ star—just as Whoopi had herself been catapulted to attention thanks to her theatre work a quarter‐century or more before. Her intuition must have worked, given that Sister Act in London played more than 600 performances over 18 months, breaking box office records twice at the Palladium, and on Broadway was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical. In fact, the show has now been seen by over three million audience members across the globe, including productions in Hamburg, Vienna, Milan, and on tour throughout the UK, with upcoming productions scheduled to begin in Paris, Stuttgart, Scheveningen, Moscow, Madrid, Prague, Sao Paolo, Korea, ®

WHOOPI GOT THE HABIT and Japan. Expect a stage convention of Deloris‐es someday soon. The films, of course, are drenched in the music of the times, and Sister Act on stage could have gone the jukebox musical route. Instead, Alan Menken, a composer who has himself won more Oscars than most of us have had cups of coffee, offers up an original score in the best pastiche tradition, which is to say that an entire era of disco, gospel, and blues pours forth from the stage, contributing to a score that, says Whoopi, “works just as well as the film, if not better.” Whoopi in any case knows first‐hand the virtues of music‐making when it comes to musical theatre: she was the unexpected choice to take over for Nathan Lane in the hit Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, directed by Jerry Zaks, and it is Zaks who directed Sister Act on Broadway— a vivid example of the sort of small‐world department on which Broadway thrives. An African‐American woman as the male roman slave, Pseudolus? We told you there wasn’t much this singular talent couldn’t do.

And it’s surely not coincidental that Sondheim’s peerless lyrics for Forum’s uproarious opening number include the immortal line, “tragedy tomorrow/comedy tonight.” That mantra could well apply equally to the hapless Deloris, a singer seeking refuge from the gun‐toting Curtis, who finds both a safe home and the chance to send some women’s voices soaring within a convent that clearly didn’t realize all it needed was this feisty, winning outsider to wake them up. Sister Act may take its opening cues from the cries of a chanteuse in danger, but it builds toward a celebration not just of the sisterhood but of the power of soul, both musical and otherwise. In retrospect, small wonder Whoopi was keen to still her appreciative public in order to get the show on the road. You came to cheer, she seemed to be telling the sold‐ out house. Now stay to listen.
