T
his extraordinary collaboration, 15 years in the making, is a haunting tale of fraternal love, lust, jealousy and revenge, performed by an ensemble cast of 16 actors and a four-piece live band, comprised of members of John Mellencamp’s band. The staging of Ghost Brothers is an amalgam of different styles—both old fashioned, resembling an old-style radio show, and yet, modern and unique in its interactive use of storytelling, music and singing to move the macabre Ghost Brothers story forward. A malevolent Shape circles the stage, singing about heaven and hell. Joe McCandless lingers in the Dreamland Café, remembering the events of his life. Joe is urged to action by the friendly bartender. In 2007, he goes to his family cabin in Darkland County, Mississippi, where his brothers died in 1967, to tell his own sons Frank and Drake his tale of brotherly love gone sour. Frank and Drake’s relationship is also under strain. Drake stayed home after high school to play in a local band while working as a mechanic. Frank, a college boy, is about to get rich after selling the paperback rights to his novel. Anna, Frank’s girlfriend, used to be with Drake. Monique, the boys’ mother, tries to find a way for them all to get along. With his sons at each other’s throats, Joe’s story will save or destroy the McCandless family.
WHO’S WHO
T Bone Burnett, John Mellencamp, Stephen King STEPHEN KING (Libretto) made his first professional short story sale in 1967 to Startling Mystery Stories. He has since published more than 100 short stories and 50 books and has become one of the world’s most successful writers. There have been 52 film adaptations of his novels and short stories, notably Stand By Me, Misery, Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, and a television series based on his novel Under The Dome. Throughout his career, Stephen has taken on innovative challenges and made publishing history such as being the first wellknown writer to publish e-books and the only writer to have six books on the New York Times best-seller list in the same week. He has received numerous literary awards including being the 2003 recipient of The National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. Stephen lives in Maine and Florida with his wife, novelist Tabitha King. They are regular contributors to a number of charities, including many libraries, and have been honored locally for their philanthropic 3
WHO’S WHO activities. King is still busy writing, his most recent novel is Revival, released in November 2014. JOHN MELLENCAMP (Music and Lyrics). Mellencamp’s career in music, spanning more than 35 years, has seen him transition from pop star to one of the most highly regarded songwriters of a generation. The Voice of The Heartland continues to evolve artistically with Plain Spoken—the first new music from the artist since 2010’s critically acclaimed No Better Than This. Plain Spoken is John’s 22nd full length album. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy winner, a recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, ASCAP Foundation’s Champion Award, The Woody Guthrie Award, and Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The social activism reflected in his songs helped catalyze Farm Aid, the concert series and organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers for more than 25 years. The unique instrumentation of his band and his poignant songs about everyday life in the American heartland, are widely credited with being the forbearer of the Americana/ No Depression genre of rural-inflected music. An 80-city tour in North America begins in January 2015. His final performance held in Indianapolis at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse on August 4 will benefit the Riley Children’s Foundation, which supports Riley Hospital for Children (rileykids.org). Also an accomplished painter, his one-man show The Paintings of John Mellencamp is currently on view at the Museum of Art in DeLand, Florida, through January 4, 2015 to be followed by the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA from January 17 to April 12, 2015.
