Memphis Brings Rock ‘n’ Roll History to the Fisher

T

urn up that dial! From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee comes a hot new Broadway musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. The late Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, also known as “Daddy-O-Dewey,” is thought by many musical historians to be the person most responsible for integrating American radio from 1948 to Felicia Boswell 1958. His strugand the National Tour gle to integrate Cast of Memphis. American muPhoto: Paul Kolnik sic and popular culture in the City of Memphis was the inspiration for the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis. In 1950’s Memphis, Dewey Phillips’s nightly radio show “Red Hot and Blue” had a format that integrated the airways with rhythm and blues, pop, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and country music. He was primarily known for playing Elvis Presley singing “That’s All Right” and for doing Elvis’s first radio interview in 1954. By showcasing both black and white musicians, he was instrumental in integrating musical tastes and promoting wider acceptance of black artists, allowing in turn rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll to emerge as national trends. By 1954, his shows were popular throughout the mid-South among both white and black audiences. During the years of his “Red Hot and Blue” broadcasts on WHBQ, he had the Number One Show with a biracial teen audience. His disc jockey style used on this program was that of the now stereotypical character of the hyperactive, fast-talking, crazy-acting disc jockey. In an interview, Memphis author and lyricist Joe DiPietro said, “(Phillips) was pretty much radio’s first shock jock—wild, outra-

geous, untamable. He also had a love for rhythm and blues and was the first to play it in the center of the radio dial in Memphis (a dangerous thing in those days, since radio was as horrifically segregated as society.) So I took the germ of Dewey’s life, added elements of other DJs of the time, and created a fictional story that tells the tale of a rock ‘n’ roll rebel who breaks down barriers during a time that changed this country forever.” DiPietro teamed up with composer David Bryan for the musical. “It’s an epic American tale about the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, I just love that we not only portray one of the first white DJs to integrate the radio, but we also dramatize an interracial love story (when it was against the law in many states to have a interracial marriage). Ultimately, it’s a story about how music helped bring about social change, and how this music helped bring people together.” Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Memphis played preBroadway at the La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre, and features a Tony-winning book by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) and a Tony-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi’s founding member David Bryan. Memphis is directed by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu), and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys). Get ready to experience Broadway’s most exciting new destination—what AP calls “The very essence of what a Broadway musical should be.” Memphis plays the Fisher Theatre April 9–21. Tickets: Fisher Box Office, ticketmaster.com & 800-982-2787. Groups of 10+ e-mail Groups@BroadwayInDetroit.com (subject line: Memphis) or call (313) 871-1132. 5
