Frank Ewere COM 3500 4/6/15 Instructions for putting Tell Tale Heart into InDesign 1. Open InDesign and create a new document. Then go and check both facing pages and master text frame. Also, be sure to change each number in the margin area to 1 inch. Now, press ok. 2. Next, go to File, Place, and get the “Tell Tale Heart Document” (then place it on page). 3. Then go to the first page and click the space right after the word POE. Next, press return on the number pad (not the one next to shift). This inserts a page break so that there is a blank page between the title page and the table of contents page. 4. Next click the space after contents (in table of contents) and press the return key (same one as last time). Now there should be another page break. 5. Next go to the introduction page (don’t click directly on it but go to the page as it is listed with all of the other pages next to the layers and links sections), right click and then click Numbering & Section Options. 6. Click the Start Page Numbering at: 1 option and then press ok twice. 7. Go to A Master and create a small text box on both facing pages. Make sure the page has been overridden (right click, override all Master page items). Then go to type, insert special character, markers, and then current page number. Do this for the other text box as well. 8. Then right click the first Master page (A-Master) and click apply Master pages. When the box comes up, in “To Pages” choose “All Pages.” Press ok. For all the pages before the introduction page, delete all the boxes with page numbers (“override all master page items” on the page and then delete each box). 9. To insert table of contents, go to (top of the screen) layout, table of contents. Title the table of contents (ex. Table of Contents). Then under the “Other Styles section, click on Bob’s Heading 01 and click <<Add. Make sure that the entry style says “Same Style.” Also be sure to <<Add Bob’s heading 02 as well. Then press ok (also make sure there is a ^t in the between entry and number section). 10. Next go to paragraph styles (on the right of the screen it is underneath the section with Pages, layers, links, etc…). Right click Bob’s heading 01 and click edit. Then, in the pop up box, go to Tabs. Make sure to click the third arrow option (right justified tab). Then put a period in the box that says “leader.” Next, click on the ruler at someplace (ex. between 30-42 inches). Press ok. Make sure these setting are the same for “Bob’s heading 02” as well. Finally, press the tab key (on your keyboard) in between each of the main headings in the Table of Contents (Introduction, etc…). 11. For the index, make a list of 18-20 words. Then for each word, index each occurrence of the word (ex. groan). To do this, go to the page the word is first shown. Highlight the

word, and then go to Window (top of InDesign) and scroll down to Type and Tables. Once there, click on it and make sure “Index” is checked. 12. In the index box, near the top right corner, click on the space below the two triangles and the x. When the option New Page Reference comes up, click it. Then click add all and finally click Done. Do this process for each of the 18-20 words (except for mad and senses). 13. For the word mad, highlight it. Then go to New Page Reference again and click all. Then click Done. For the subentries, first go to the first occurrence of the subentry “anxiety.” Highlight it and go to New Page Reference. In the first topic level, type in “mad.” In the second topic level, type in “anxiety.” Then click add and after that click Done. 14. Do the exact same thing you did with “anxiety” to the word “madness.” 15. For the word “senses,” find and highlight the word. Once again, go to the New Page Reference, click add all, and then click Done. For the subentries, begin with the word “hearing.” Highlight the word and then go back to New Page Reference. In the first topic level type in “senses.” In the second topic level type in “hearing.” Then click add and finally after that click Done. 16. Do the same process for “observe” that you did for “hearing.” 17. To generate an index, go to the bottom of the index pop-up box and click the center option (page with a triangle). For the title, name it “Index.” For the “between page numbers,” add in one comma. Then press ok. Align the box with the page (fit it by stretching and moving it). 18. Then right click and press “text frame options.” For columns, make it 2. For the inset spacing, change each option to 6 pts. Also move the letter T to the top of the next column. 19. Next, press the tab key in between each word of the index and the first number next to it (ex. black tab 2,3). Then highlight all the text (except the word Index). 20. Go to the top of InDesign and click Type then scroll down to Tabs. When the tabs box opens up, click the third option out of the arrows (right-justified tab) and put a period in the “Leader” section. Then click someplace on the ruler (ex. between 9 and 18 inches). Dots should now be between the words and the page numbers. If there aren’t dots, press tab again in between those words without dots. 21. Go back into “text frame options.” Make sure to check the box that says “Balance Columns. Also for irregular spaces, use the return key to balance out the white space (make letters the same distance from each other). Also make sure each word of the index is on the page that the capital letter of the word is on (ex. all words beginning with the letter M should be on the same page as the capital letter M itself). 22. Delete any extra pages by going to preferences (under InDesign at the top), the go to type, and finally uncheck “Smart text reflow” to be able to delete pages permanently. 23. Save your file.
