BACKGROUND
BACKGROUND
OVERVIEW
Technology is affecting this generation. Children spend so much time with electronic devices, and schools assign more homework, and there is less access to natural areas. The statistics are alarming: in a typical week kids spend 53 hours a week using entertainment media, increasing childhood obesity from 7% to 18% since 1980. Producing ill effects in both mind and body.
OVERVIEW >

In a typical week kids spend 53 hours a week using entertainment media
If children have more contact with nature it will builds confidence, promote creativity, teach responsibility, makes them think about how the world works. For many children, a garden offers the only chance to get close to nature. Some lack access to gardening spaces because of their living situations while others have limited exploratory free time in the outdoors due to the focus on indoor activities and participation in organized outdoor activities. Physical environments teach children. Is important to create environments that tell children they are valued, that shows them what learning environments look and feel like.

PROBLEM
MFA THESIS PROJECT BY FR ANKIE NEGRON
BACKGROUND
PROBLEM
Children must develop great motor and small motor skills and cardiovascular endurance. Obesity which is common among American children may also be addressed through extensive physical play.
LACK OF EXERCISE >
Things to do instead using electronic devices: -Playing outdoors -Engaging in high levels of unstructured physical activity -Physically manipulating large and small objects
Physical Development: Early childhood is a critical time in children’s psychical development. During their first five years, children are either encouraged or discouraged to be physically active. But not every child is encouraged in these activities. The rate of childhood obesity has grow from 7% in the 1980’s to 18% in 2012.
-Interpersonal communications taking personal responsibility exploring how the world works
Cognitive Development: Physical development is the foundation for the cognitive development. The greater the frequency and complexity of physical activity, the better it is for brain development. Inactivity during this period can be detrimental to a child’s cognitive ability in adulthood. Lack of physical activity restricts young children’s learning because they learn through engaging the world with their senses.

DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES
BACKGROUND
WHAT I CAN DO >
Integrate the farm to a school curriculum.
DESIGN OPORTUNITIES
17
Recent studies document the importance of introducing children to the natural world, beginning in the early years. Their social, emotional, and physical health depends on this exposure to develop. Humans are hard wired to need nature because we are part of it. In some communities, children lack access to nature and the freedom to explore local flora and fauna. Using farming in children’s education and graphic design we can help them to understand better the environment, and how significant it could be for their development. This could be an essential opportunity for them discover the fauna and flora first hand. Creating a connection between the learning process and farming. This is why I would like to investigate ways to promote farm-school to children using graphic design, to help them to increase their physical activity, reducing the risk of becoming obese and other related diseases. Create healthy lifestyle habits, support children’s creativity and cognitive functioning and help them to develop respect and responsibility for the planet earth,

We focus on looking for inspiration on the Internet so many times, which is not good enough because we do not fulfill the task of exploring the outside world. This is why in this experiment, I assigned myself a task to go out and select five abstract words related to the topic and to take unexpected photos also relating to the topic.

DEVELOPMENT
MORNING IN THE FARM >
East Bay Regional District Tilden Nature Area, Berkeley, Oakland Open Daily from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm
EVENT
29
This was a very complex laboratory consists of three parts: preparing an event, handle the day of the event and then distill it. As my project is about education on the farm, in the first instance I decided to choose a strategic place even if it was a bit difficult for people to attend the place. The place was Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley. Having established the time and place of the event, it was necessary to have a plan or guide to handle the event. I decided to make it possible more detailed plan within content. Plan day by day before the event he should do so that everything flowed to perfection, something that never happens. And on the day of the event we arrived at about 11:00 am and everything went very average and was a great help and generated new ideas. After the event I decided to make a video brochure to distill my information.

Fernando How I know the kids are going to be interested in that? Today’s kids are more engage in cartoons and technology? I think you can make a fusion between tech and nature.
Irene I am working on a project about zoo animals and I am against that. It is impossible to reproduce the environment of animals. They need a large territory, with rivers, with vegetation

TARGET AUDIENCE >
I want to speak to children around 5-7 years old, their parents, and educators
MFA THESIS PROJECT BY FR ANKIE NEGRON
The first experience of a child with this type of relationship is at home with a loving family. When you entrust your child to early childhood care professionals, he not only wants his child to be safe and to learn, he also wants his child to be accepted and valued, to feel that he belongs to the school community. Vicky Thompson –She is always active in scholar projects of her three kids (Timmy, David and Christina). –Go to the farmers market every weekend to get the fresh products for their family. –Spend her free time watching recipes to make a different meal every day. “Living in a big city, my children have never seen a farm or fruit trees. It could be our chance to appreciate nature.” Yoga Trainer 40 years old Alice Robinson –Always want new ways to teach their students. –Worried about global warming and the future of younger generation. –Aims to promote moral principles to her classroom , to live and share with society. “We can bring the students to the farm to try fruits and vegetables, but reinforce the learning of math and science concepts in class, creating recipes for example” Elementary Teacher 28 years old Tommy Smith –Currently in first grade –He likes to be active playing with other kids _Like farm animals “I love to be in contact with animals, they are cool” ¿Cows chew all day? Why are some cows have ear tags? Why they just eat lettuce and celery? Student 5 years old

DEFINING STRATEGIES >
Strategy design requires assessment and analysis of problems, identification of solutions and development of action plans for change.
STR ATEGIES
After obtaining the necessary information, it is necessary to identify the priority problems arising from the current situation in order to propose solutions. In short, after knowing “how are things?” It is necessary to ask “how should they be?” I reviewed the problem during my research, evaluated possibilities and determined what are the best alternatives to address and solve the problem.

DEFINING THE MOOD >
This keywords will evoke the philosophy of the Farm School.
MOOD
EDUCATIONAL Outdoors is an important learning environment. Learning that takes place outdoors doesn’t occur indoors and it could be as rich and thoughtfully equipped as indoor education FUN Every child needs to learn that learning can be as enjoyable as play. Fun and educational activities for kids offer plenty of learning with a healthy entertainment. ECOLOGICAL For a new generation nature is more abstraction than reality. Parents don’t understand how outdoors classrooms benefits their children’s learning and developing process.

The images are always signs of something alien that incorporate various communicative codes, some very specific, such as the graphic code or the compositional relationship between the elements that make up the image. To read comprehensively and critically the images it is necessary to know these codes. Students can read comprehensively not only written texts but also images, vignettes, photographs. Reading images is a very interesting activity to practice with children who are not literate or who are transitional the first stages of reading and writing. Harmonic synthesis of drawing and color, favor the imaginative flight and encourage the potential reader to create and experience situations of diverse nature.

been a very enriching experience for my project, because it helped me to explain in a concise way to people who did not have knowledge about the project and to obtain information necessary for the progress of the project. In the design aspect, there were certain things that were better than others that helped to evolve the web page. Among these are the simplicity and efficiency of the navigation system, appropriate typography for the subject, illustrations that complement the design, in the end people asked me more about the subject, which means that the design attracted more people to be interested.

Technology is affecting this generation. Children spend so much time with electronic devices, schools assign more homework, and there is less access to natural areas. Children can get excited about nature, but we need to let them experience it. Not all schools in the city have access to a big garden or farm in their buildings like other programs. That’s why my design opportunities will cover that gap. This project will target children around 5-8 years old, their parents, educators and farmers. Integrating a farm curriculum into the classroom could be one of the most important instruments in the teaching and learning process. In doing so, children will be motivated to make new connections from their prior knowledge of various subjects. The integration of this curriculum will promote physical activity, a healthy lifestyle, and respect for the planet earth.

THE FARM
Children can learn a great many lessons and develop positive personality traits by working with farm animals. Working with animals will teach children responsibility and promote good character and integrity. A farm is a wonderful environment in which children can play, work, and learn about animals and the important place they hold in our lives. Research has shown that children who have been exposed to farm animals from a young age tend to better listeners, do well in school, and develop integrity and compassion above their age level.

MFA THESIS PROJECT BY FR ANKIE NEGRON
During my journey of my thesis project, I decided to work for a season in Whole Foods Market, as a way of learning about Californian produce and groceries. When I was working there I realized that they have a foundation dedicated to helping children through healthy eating. They currently have a lesson plan approved by the educational authorities and that is why I showed my concern to be able to obtain permission to use it for educational purposes. They are happy about it!

I have a passion for moving images and animation. After establishing my strategies I decided to make a video animation piece for The Farm School that will engage teachers and parents with this great educational initiative. The cutout animation is a variant of the stop motion animation technique and is performed by photographing flat figures. These figures are made with paper arranged horizontally and photographed from above. To animate a character is designed on paper and then cut their limbs in parts of the desired material. These ends may then be joined by nailing or sewing to generate an articulated puppet or else be loose to move each part separately. The figures, being flat, can only show one facet so if you want to take the character or figure from other angles of perspective, you have to draw and trim it again.

SOCIAL MEDIA
DEVELOPMENT
INSTASGRAM > Social networks have become an absolutely essential tool for my thesis for the distribution of my visual content.
SOCIAL MEDIA
The technology of social networks have made it easier to access and disseminate information, now we spend more time on the Internet because it seems faster and easier to communicate by this means. So a good part of our social life has been translated to the web. Some key elements that I consider in my post: 1. Being simple - not elaborate designs, the simplest is what our followers will remember. 2. Be unique - keep a unit in the online presence, a graphic line that is recognizable at any time, anywhere. 3. Be remembered - There is so much information shared in networks, that what is important is that we impact and that the visitor will remember us.

ABOUT THE FARM SCHOOL > The Farm School objective is to integrate edible education for children 4-6 years old) combining the farm, gardening and kitchen.
ABOUT
135
The Farm School is a graphic design thesis that aims to integrate the farm, gardening, and kitchen to a school curriculum. This will create healthy lifestyle habits, support children’s creativity and cognitive functioning and help them to develop respect and responsibility for the planet earth. We engage students in the process of growing a diversity of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Students can have a unique opportunity at the farm to connect with the earth, our local environment, and to learn about science, health and nutrition through hands-on experiences such as planting, harvesting, cooking, taking care of farm animals. This will provide motivation for them to ask questions and seek answers, in and out side the farm.

THE KITCHEN The Farm School teaches these values through edible education, an essential ingredient to raising healthy, happy children. Learning comes alive in the kitchen classroom, where kids mix math, simmer science, and taste fun! There is so much for children to learn by spending time in the kitchen. It’s tempting to send my kids off to play while I’m fixing dinner. We believe in the power of food to unite people around the table and in the kitchen.

The plant then uses them to make glucose/ sugar, which is the energy/food for the plant. Oxygen is also produced by the plant in this cycle, which is then let off into the air! Have you noticed how clean and pure the air feels when there are plants around? They are filling the air with oxygen!

FAMILY I know it wasn’t easy to let me go so thank you for pushing me to go out and chase my dreams anyway. Thanks for the care packages, notes, and being so impossibly selfless in your love and support, and for being a soft place to land when I felt like I was going to crash and burn.
LOVE Thanks for loving me when I was my most grumpy, unlovable self, for working your butt off to make sure I had somewhere to live, food to eat, and paper to print on, and somehow, after seeing me through three sleepless years of graduate school.
