MISSION STATEMENT

1 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

A LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

The start of the 2022-23 school year has been an exciting time to be a Panther! The energy surrounding the school is palpable.

This fall, four upper school students were named National Merit Scholars, our Entrepreneurial Leadership students won several awards at their first-ever pitch competition against 50 other schools from across the region, and our All-Community Tailgate drew a crowd of over 2,000 to The Hill for our first home football game of the season.

The support for our community is inspiring and this year, we celebrated a record-breaking 2021-22 Annual Fund and the successful completion of the first phase of the largest capital campaign in FRA's history. Phase one of The Unique Moment in Time capital campaign provided for our students and faculty the Weicker Center for Student Life, the athletic center and Crockett & Tansil Fitness Center, the lower school portico, the pavilion on The Hill, the security gate and welcome center, the opening of the newly renovated Scarlett Family Chapel, and the acquisition of the adjacent 4600 property. In the second portion of this edition of the magazine, we have included our Philanthropy Report for 2021-22, which recognizes and celebrates the tremendous support for our school community and our unique mission to deliver a challenging educational experience in an inclusive Christian community.

I hope you enjoy hearing the stories of current students, alumni, and families who are leading in our community and making an impact on our campus. I know my family is blessed to be a part of this remarkable community. I hope to see you on campus soon.

Sincerely,

ALUMNI 5 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

Captain Bo Korpman

Class of 2012

IIt’s a gift to be able to reflect upon one’s life and pinpoint a trulyformative experience. As I look back on my thirteen years at Franklin Road Academy, however, it’s clear that the molding and shaping I underwent there spanned not just a singular moment but an entire childhood. Now fully committed to a military career, it’s no surprise that I find myself mirroring the value of service that FRA embodies so strongly. In my volunteering, it’s only fitting that I now strive to invest in our nation’s youth the same way dozens of exceptional teachers invested in me. A decade after graduating, I cannot help but notice the pattern of FRA bettering itself as an independent school and continuing to shape its students into exceptional young people.

After FRA, I attended Vanderbilt University, where I majored in political science and philosophy. The writing and critical thinking foundation FRA gave me were instrumental in my success there, and I was privileged to have no qualms about my ability to speak publicly after more than a decade of FRA opportunities to engage in public speaking while pursuing student council opportunities, performing with the choir,

and helping lead our hockey team to a championship in 2012. Following a quick master’s degree, I went through Air Force Euro-NATO pilot training, taught combat pilots from all over Europe for three years as an instructor after that, and am now preparing to join America’s oldest fighter squadron as an F-22 pilot. There’s no doubt in my mind that my time at FRA was instrumental in getting me into the most capable fighter jet the world has ever seen.

FRA empowers its students and prepares them for life after their college preparatory years. And while I owe so much of the success I found to my time in the university and beyond, what keeps me coming back to visit the school and engaging with the FRA community runs much deeper. Academia is only one part of the equation, and it’s the extra mile of arts, athletics, character-building—and, most importantly— individualized consideration that sets our school apart. A contrarian by nature, there was never a moment at FRA that I didn’t feel seen; there was never a teacher who, regardless of the difference in belief or thought, didn’t go out of his or her way to understand me and challenge me to deepen my understanding and push the boundaries of my learning. No one embodies this more powerfully than M. (Monsieur) Climer.

M. Climer is —after college, grad school, and half a decade of Air Force schooling and instruction— the best teacher I have had and will ever have. In my first Air Force assignment as an instructor pilot, I strove to embody his uncompromising commitment to excellence, mastery, and polymathic character. As a testament to the quality of his teaching, I use my French to this day for special military assignments. His teaching isn’t a job but a service, and he serves with a commitment and selflessness that would be at home in the most demanding of military specialties.

FRA is, indeed, an institution of service. Service projects, community outreach, and serving the

7 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

students growing up within its walls define how I have seen FRA invest in each generation of young people. Beyond my flying duties, I volunteer weekly with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the civilian arm of the USAF. Somewhat like Boy/Girl Scouts but with a military flavor, I’ve had the privilege of leading, flying, and shaping youth across the United States.

No other program allows kids to fly planes, lead, and pursue STEM opportunities like CAP; frankly, the time I spend volunteering there is the most rewarding part of each of my weeks. Though my “kiddos” go on to pursue diverse career paths, I am always proud to impart the meaning that military service has upon a young America that is awash with an overwhelming number of opportunities and a search for selfactualization that is uniquely difficult in an age of endless internet connections and awareness.

Two of FRA’s defining qualities, leadership and service, are invaluable in every walk of life.

The military has asked me to move four times just in 2022. After a career of moves and travel, the word “home” has taken on a very different meaning. A wise old fighter pilot once told me, “It’s not places that make a home; it’s people.” FRA isn’t merely a place. It's people, while very different now from when I was a student, define the school and make it the home I return to every chance I get to come back to Nashville. The investment FRA made in me is one that I now try to pour back into each one of the airmen I lead. It was a true honor to speak at the Veteran’s Day

ceremony in November; and despite the gravitas of the moment, the speech was effortless. This country’s love and respect for service is part of what makes the US extraordinary. I learned that at FRA, and I’m proud to know that the next generation of Franklin Road Academy students are following in that legacy. 

Captain Ralph "Bo" Korpman '12 is a United States Air Force F-22 pilot currently assigned to the 43rd Fighter Squadron, Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Captain Korpman previously spent five years supporting the NATO combat pilot training mission at Sheppard Air Force Base, where he amassed 1,000 Air Force instructor pilot hours and was recognized in 2019 as the top instructor officer in the Air Force's 60,000-person education and training branch.

Captain Korpman attended FRA from kindergarten through 12th grade before receiving an Air Force R.O.T.C. scholarship and continuing his education at Vanderbilt University. During his time at FRA, he served as vice president of National Honor Society, was a member of the hockey team, vocal ensemble, newspaper, and the 12-Year Club, and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by his peers.

Whitney Dunn Daniel

- Class of 1999 -

QWHAT ABOUT FRA HAS REMAINED STEADFAST OVER THE YEARS?

AFRA has always emphasized family and community. Without one, you don’t have the other. Throughout the years, this still seems to be the case.

HOW HAS FRA CHANGED SINCE YOUR TIME THERE? HOW HAS IT STAYED THE SAME?

While FRA continues to retain that small-town, family feel, watching the school evolve and adapt to our culture has been fun. I am excited about the opportunity to become involved in the recently launched entrepreneurship program!

HOW DOES THE HEART AND MISSION OF FRA MIRROR YOUR PERSONAL LIFE MISSION?

FRA’s focus on developing a lifelong love of learning, discovering personal passions, and nurturing leaders align with how I run my business and raise my children. The emphasis on character development, morals, and ethics is extremely important. Feeling connected to a belief system within a like-minded community is very comforting.

WHAT PROGRAMS, TEACHERS, AND MEMORIES HAVE BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL?

I loved Coach Tucker who was my art teacher at the time. Part of that is because I’m a right-brained person and feel driven and inspired in creative environments. Coach Tucker is such a cool guy. I still have the Raku pottery I made in his class.

FranklinRoadAcademy.com | 10
11 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR FRA EXPERIENCE?

Coming out of public school was quite an adjustment. While it was intimidating at times, I always knew I could rely on my teachers and the administration to provide the support I needed as long as I was willing to ask. I made some lifelong friends and continue to cherish and value those relationships to this day. We certainly cut up at times and had our fair share of fun.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU LEARNED AT FRA?

I learned many lessons during my years at FRA, but one of the most important is that effort is everything. I had to stay organized, focused, and be willing to put forth the required effort to succeed. After graduating from FRA, I began to realize that the hard work in high school prepared me to manage heavier workloads in college, as well as in my professional life. Building and maintaining my business has taken that same determination.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION, AND HOW DOES FRA PLAY A PART IN THAT?

The Perfect Pair inspires me every single day. The women I work with, the customers I have grown to know, and even the challenges I face make it all a rewarding experience. Since my days at FRA, I have seen so much come full circle. The community I valued on campus has become a necessity in my business. I work hard to instill confidence and challenge others, as I was once challenged at FRA. In my business, I want to create something honest, organic, and authentic - just like the education I was provided!

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN A BOUTIQUE?

Out of college, I was a traveling rep for the Nicole Miller clothing collection. In my travels, in and out of hundreds of boutiques, I noticed that almost every fun city had a fabulous shoe boutique. Nashville didn’t at the time. I wanted to fill a void in our local retail market and turn a mild shoe and jewelry addiction into a business.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO CURRENT FRA STUDENTS?

Stay positive and ask for help when you feel overwhelmed. There may be times when certain subjects, assignments, or friendships are challenging but know that there’s a support system in place to help you succeed. 

Whitney graduated from FRA in 1999. She was voted "Wittiest" by her peers during her senior year. Following graduation, she attended MTSU where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. In 2004, she opened The Perfect Pair. In her Nashville retail space, you’ll find a carefully curated collection of interesting shoes, versatile clothing, and unique handbags and accessories. Whitney enjoys traveling with her husband and two children, cooking, and running.

Brandon Grass

- Class of 2004 -

AAfter attending FRA for thirteen years and still being involved in the life of the school today as a coach, I see that FRA has remained dedicated to developing kids as a whole, not only athletically or academically but spiritually as well. There is a focus on developing well-rounded people and helping kids grow in all aspects of who they are. FRA's emphasis on faith is as strong as ever and has been the foundation of their work. I owe so much of who I am today to the principles instilled in me throughout my time at FRA.

In 2016, I started as the pole vault coach at FRA for the track and field team. Working alongside Coach Tucker, who continues to be my most influential coaching mentor, has been such an honor. The opportunity to coach has allowed me to bear the fruit that FRA instilled in me throughout the years.

I think back to moments in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, wrestling, choir, track, and theater that helped shape me into the individual I am today. I had the chance to be a part of the life of this place, and the small moments mattered.

Ms. Jewell had a significant impact on my life in the fine and performing arts department. She challenged me and created a family-like environment for students on this campus. Coach Tucker taught me some of life’s most essential lessons, teaching me that what I did in high school was making a small deposit for the rest of my life. He would encourage me to live my daily life with humility and love for the big deposit in the end—a life of meaning. I coach because I want to pay it forward and pour into kids the same way the teachers and programs shaped me. Twenty years later, the mentors I had on this campus still impact me daily.

Over the past six years, I’ve coached six outdoor State Champion pole vaulters, two indoor State Champion pole vaulters, one indoor pole vaulter who set the State Championship record, and numerous other successful athletes who have continued their careers at the collegiate level.

Last season, I experienced one of my favorite coaching moments of my life. I was standing in the rain, celebrating with Coach Tucker after our

track and field team won the State Championship meet. It was a simple moment, but I was overcome with joy as I celebrated this win with the person who had poured so much into my life and deserved recognition for his dedication. In this moment, I saw the full-circle impact of the mission of FRA.

The school's mission is behind everything FRA does and is a big part of the reason I started coaching. FRA develops well-rounded members of society and encourages students to be the best version of themselves. My experiences at FRA prepared me with a heart to coach, and now I want to develop

not only myself but the future leaders in this community.

I genuinely believe I'm a better coach because of the faculty and staff members I had during my time at FRA. My teachers brought something different to the table that helped me grow into who I am and challenged me academically, emotionally, and spiritually. It has always stayed with me.

There was a deeper meaning and focus behind our conversations. And today, I continue to treat each

15 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

moment and conversation as an opportunity to help students grow and build a strong foundation for their continued success.

Over the years, everything has grown and improved at FRA, whether it be the physical campus, the student body, athletics, or facilities. The unique community of students and families that come out of FRA is ready to contribute to their college, society, and the world. I am honored to have graduated from a place that is always looking for the better.

The way FRA has continued to grow, improve, move forward, and become an anchor in the Nashville community and beyond makes all FRA alumni proud. And while much has changed at the school, I'm proud to know that FRA continues to develop the best families and students for our day, producing outstanding leaders grounded in faith. 

Brandon graduated from FRA in 2004 and was a member of the 12-Year Club. In high school, he wrestled and ran track. He was a member of three State Championship track teams, won an individual State Championship title in pole vault in 2003, and was named to the All-Midstate Track and Field Team in 2003. He was also in the vocal ensemble and participated in the theater program.

After graduating from FRA, Brandon attended Belmont University, where he ran track, earned his bachelor's degree in business administration, and received his doctorate in physical therapy in 2013. In addition to being a physical therapist and coaching at FRA, Brandon has operated a club track team since 2008. Brandon and his wife, Laura, have three children, Caroline, Walt, and James.

BR ADCAST JOURNALISM

FEATURE STORY 17 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

OOne main goal of our 2020-2025 Strategic Vision is to further expand experiential and innovative learning opportunities for our students as they explore and pursue their passions. In recent years, communication and journalism majors have amplified in popularity. Many businesses quickly transitioned to digital platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing the value and importance of multimedia solutions. Our daily lives were instantly changed, with Zoom webinars and meetings becoming the new normal. Companies large and small had to adapt to an "on-air talent" feel, and students realized this would impact their future careers.

Franklin Road Academy continues to expand innovative learning opportunities for our students as we prepare them to lead in an everchanging and increasingly digital world. Our broadcast journalism students are honing their skills in video production and editing, podcast recording, and live broadcasting.

GOOD MORNING FRAMERICA

Good Morning FRAmerica is a weekly show that airs in front of our upper school student body every Friday morning during convocation. Students manage all pre- and post-production responsibilities, from conceptualization and planning to filming and editing, including the content and graphics for the weekly morning show. Segments often include current school events, faculty spotlights, athletic highlights, student accolades, and announcements.

LIVE BROADCASTS

Our Broadcast Club is responsible for play-by-play announcing and production during athletic contests. These broadcasts are live and available on the NFHS Network. The enthusiasm and passion for digital production have spread into our lower school, where our fourth grade students have started their own Broadcast Club to learn about communications, social media, video, and podcasts. Over the past few years, the Tennessee High School Press Association has awarded our upper school students eight honors. In addition, Youth Journalism International has presented our program with three awards for student broadcast and production excellence.

FranklinRoadAcademy.com | 32 FranklinRoadAcademy.com | 18

"I have served as a co-host of Good Morning FRAmerica since my junior year, and I still have the same love for the show today as the day I first started. Not only does this involvement allow me to be on our weekly news show, but it also allows me to be involved with broadcast projects all around campus. If it was not for Mrs. Zenner and her support of me stepping outside my comfort zone, I firmly believe I would not be as confident as I am today."

19 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

CHRISTMAS VIDEO

The Christmas video is a beloved annual tradition at FRA. The broadcast journalism students partner with the marketing and communications team to plan, film, and edit the video. Last year's video was viewed over 27,000 times and won the Tennessee High School Press Association (THSPA) Award for the best lip dub video at the 2021-22 THSPA Student Media Awards last March.

VELOCITY GRANT

This summer, we received Velocity Grant funds that helped enhance the Broadcast Journalism program by providing the latest technology available. FRA's Annual Fund provides velocity Grants to stimulate existing programmatic growth across our campus to improve the student experience through dynamic and innovative practices. With our grant, the broadcast department purchased seven bundle kits, each including a Canon camera, microphone, tripod, LED lighting, lens, and filters. Students are assigned bundle kits and are encouraged to use the equipment throughout the semester. Students also receive Adobe Creative Cloud on their personal computers, which allows them to create and edit in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. They also have full access to edit on the specialized equipment in the broadcast classroom or on their personal laptops. 

YOUNG ALUMNI IN ACTION

SARAH HAWKINS graduated from FRA last year and recently landed a paid internship with Hail State Productions at Mississippi State University.

Hail State Productions provides opportunities for students to work behind the scenes at sporting events airing on the SEC Network and ESPN.

Sarah is responsible for capturing video and editing show segments for the athletic programs. "Thanks to Mrs. Zenner’s class and the confidence she gave me during the two years I took broadcast journalism, I still get to edit and create videos I love," said Sarah. "I mastered Adobe Premiere Pro and learned how to set up a camera shot and create videos."

Sarah plans to use her production skills to further her future career in real estate and interior design by creating video tours and 3D/4D designs. Sarah learned the fundamental skills that helped her land her internship from the broadcast classes offered at FRA.

VEX Robotics

THE LOWER SCHOOL ROBOTICS CLUB BUILDS

FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS AND EXPANDS PROGRAMMING TO INCLUDE OUR YOUNGEST STUDENTS

Franklin Road Academy is committed to providing cutting-edge technology and innovative learning opportunities to prepare our students for a rapidly changing world. With the addition of our lower school club, the robotics program at FRA spans all three divisions.

In the lower school, students are introduced to the VEX robotics 123 (PreK), VEX Go (K-2), and VEX IQ (3-4) within the curriculum of the media center. VEX encourages creativity, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving among groups. It values the importance of learning from failure.

In the pre-kindergarten years, students learn to code using programmable robots. As they move into our kindergarten through fourth grade media classes, students learn using a construction system that provides a natural inquisitive approach to building robots based on specific challenges, and students must modify their robots as the tasks change.

ROBOTICS
21 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

In addition to the introduction of VEX in media classes, families can choose to sign up their child for after-school robotics classes that dive deeper into coding and provide mock competitions to prepare for a future third and fourth grade team in 2023. This group of students meets once a week after school, and as they enter their third and fourth grade years can choose to spend their recess time working on their robots in the lower school innovation lab.

Since introducing the program in the spring of 2022, my initial goal was to gather interest and see if this was something students and families genuinely wanted. To my excitement, robotics has been a highly sought-after program, and several students have attended it in the spring, summer, and fall. Because of this consistent interest from so many students, I shifted my objective to advancing the skills of those students to create the third and fourth grade competitive team next year. We will introduce the students to the competition kits for VEX IQ and start the robotics team adventure together.

By creating mock competitions and eventually a lower school robotics team, we provide an early introduction to better prepare students to join the highly competitive middle and upper school robotics teams. The early exposure will allow students to work on the core components of being an effective robotics team, focusing on each team member's role and strengths, and understanding how those skills can be combined for optimal success. 

The lower school robotics team is an essential component of our strategic initiative to expand innovative programs. We recognize that our students must be able to solve problems creatively in a rapidly changing world. Participating in an advanced robotics program allows our students to lead and grow as they develop into thoughtful, well-balanced individuals.

Senior Spotlights

ALAYNA MCINTOSH ’23

WHAT PART OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR HAS IMPACTED YOU THE MOST?

So far, my senior year has been so emotionally impactful. I realize every day is one of my last on this campus, so I can’t help but cherish each one. Specifically, senior greeting and homecoming week this year reminded me why this place will always be a second home. There is so much to be excited about in this place.

WHICH CO-CURRICULAR HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE?

My softball experience is one I would have never imagined for myself. I randomly picked up the sport, fell in love with it, and decided I wanted to become a skilled softball athlete. I worked on my skill and dedication to the sport for an entire summer. After that summer, I returned to school and saw my name as the starting catcher. The moment I saw my name on that roster was the highlight of my FRA career. Because of FRA softball, I learned that I can do anything I want if I work hard and pursue my passions. FRA has instilled resilience in me.

HOW HAVE YOU GROWN AT FRA?

Since starting at the school in fourth grade, FRA has helped shape my identity into something much bigger than what I could have ever imagined for myself. I've learned to be a leader, mentor, and friend to everyone around me. My mentors, like Coach Hilkin, continually push me to become the most refined version of myself.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS 23 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED AT FRA?

I have learned that I should always take the opportunity to challenge myself. FRA has instilled so much confidence in me, and I know I can lead no matter where I go or what I do. I’m called to be a leader and push myself further. FRA changed my mindset and encouraged me to achieve things I didn't realize I was capable of accomplishing.

WHAT HAS BEEN ESSENTIAL FOR YOU OVER YOUR YEARS ON THIS CAMPUS?

The community on this campus has been essential and has changed my perspective of what a school could be. I honestly feel like my life is a high school movie sometimes. I always want to be in the middle of the life of this school and the community that becomes stronger each year I've been here.

HOW HAVE ACADEMICS CHALLENGED YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR YEARS AT FRA?

FRA has challenged me to take responsibility for myself and my academic rigor. Each of my teachers has encouraged and pushed me while meeting me with assistance and fun throughout the process. Mr. Kaiser always puts his students before the lesson and sees where we are, what we need, and how the lesson can challenge and equip us for success.

WHAT WAS A VALUABLE PART OF BEING INVOLVED IN STUDENT COUNCIL?

Student council has molded me into a better leader. I have learned how to plan, grow, and express my ideas and opinions. When I came to FRA, I wouldn’t have dreamed of being involved in such a prominent studentleadership position, but FRA gave me the confidence to step into this role.

IF YOU COULD EXPLAIN YOUR FRA EXPERIENCE IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

You don’t fully understand the impact of this place and these people until the clock is ticking, and you realize it is all coming to an end. You recognize that your experience at FRA has made you the person you always hoped to become.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANY INCOMING FRA STUDENT?

Anything that FRA has or offers, take it. As I look at my FRA experience, I wish I could have been involved in everything. The faculty members welcome and encourage students to be involved in lots of things. Embrace the community of peers and staff, and allow yourself to make the best memories. Immerse yourself in this place, and let it mold you into what the world needs—a friend and a leader.

FranklinRoadAcademy.com | 24

BEN BRADSHAW '23

Q AWHAT ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ON AND OFF CAMPUS?

I try my hardest to stay involved in several activities FRA offers outside the classroom. I am a member of the football and soccer teams, a part of the broadcast club, a freshman mentor and student council member, a seventh grade flag football coach, and a Turner Fellow.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN MOST AS A TURNER FELLOW?

I learned to be a leader and make an impact in the lives of those who depended on me. I had to show up each day with energy and ideas. I learned to be a friend and a mentor while balancing the tasks at hand each day. I left that experience confident in my leadership, planning, and management abilities. I also realized I could positively impact my community by simply getting involved.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT FRA?

I've been at FRA since fifth grade. This school community has molded me into someone I wouldn't have recognized before middle school. I've felt challenged, pushed out of my comfort zone, and inspired to become the best person I can be.

WHY IS FRA SO UNIQUE TO YOU?

Having a family connection to the school makes it all so much more special for me. I want to live by the legacy left by my grandparents but also build on it. I want to continue the values my grandfather instilled, service, scholarship, and community while urging the students and myself to construct our own. This is what makes FRA so unique: the ability to create your own path academically, athletically, and artistically, all with support from an eclectic, inspired community with strong values.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN INCOMING FRA FRESHMAN?

Challenge yourself, be involved, and step out of your comfort zone. Coming in the first year, besides sports, I wasn’t too involved. Showing up and investing in the student experience that FRA allows you to have is a privilege. Dig deep and let yourself be a part of the community, the arts, the athletics, and this incredible campus. You may not think some small involvement will have an impact, but it will. Finally, let the people around you help. Students, teachers, and more will want to aid your journey if you ask.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS 25 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

WHAT HAVE YOU BENEFITED MOST FROM FRA IN TERMS OF ACADEMICS?

I've benefited from many aspects of academics at FRA, but the most important is fostering my eagerness to learn. The challenging classes push me every day. In addition, the variety of classes offered, combined with the intentionality of the teachers, has developed interests in me that I didn't even know I had. I also understand that each lesson, assignment, and homework problem has a purpose, and each class period helps shape and mold us into students with academic discipline. I will leave FRA this spring inspired to explore my interests thoroughly in college and use them to benefit my community.

IF YOU COULD PUT YOUR FRA EXPERIENCE IN A FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?

FRA is a place that has allowed me to gain experience and grow in many ways: academically, spiritually, athletically, and socially. Each day I learn something new and walk out the door knowing I can influence the world around me.

WHAT WILL YOU TAKE FROM FRA AND APPLY TO LIFE IN THE FUTURE?

Because of FRA, I’ve learned to challenge myself constantly. I’ve learned to invest in the community around me and lean into those hoping to help grow me. I’ve learned to seek support while allowing people to challenge me because the school has taught me that I can improve continuously in such a supportive and engaging environment.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST PART OF SENIOR YEAR SO FAR?

Our community, including the senior class, has reached a new energy level that has brought us together. I’ve felt and experienced how this excitement to be at FRA is driving our class toward supporting each other and soaking up our last year together. This year on the football field, we were able to succeed as we did because we knew the community had our backs. I also have recognized how this energy has spilled over into supporting all events involving FRA.

The Six Dimensions of Wellness

While the concept of wellness often revolves around physical and mental wellbeing, wellness experts understand that there’s much more to it than that. Wellness includes so much more than the foods you eat or the time you spend at the gym—according to the National Institute of Wellness: “Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.” The National Wellness Institute promotes the Six Dimensions of Wellness: emotional, occupational, physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual. Addressing all six dimensions of wellness in our lives builds a holistic sense of wellness and fulfillment.

WELLNESS FEATURE

PHYSICAL WELLNESS

Move more. Eat better.

Physical wellness tends to show up at the forefront of any wellness regimen and encompasses everything from physical activity level and the nutritional value of your diet to the quality of your sleep. Optimal physical wellness directly impacts the way you think and feel. When you take care of your body in a physical manner, you are rewarded with better digestion, a clearer mind, a better sense of judgment, and a more optimistic attitude.

Your physical health extends beyond your body’s basic functioning. You can improve physical wellness with small changes in your daily habits, such as regulating the amount of alcohol you consume, taking supplements when necessary, or being more mindful of your meal portions.

The idea is to try to minimize any potentially destructive habits that could become second nature.

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS

Practice gratitude.

Emotional wellness covers everything from mental health and self-esteem to intimacy and the healthy expression of emotions. As humans, we possess a complex set of emotions that equip us to connect with others, live with a sense of morality, and act as functional members of society. You can strengthen your emotional and mental well-being by turning

to a support network of family and friends, finding time to meditate and stay calm, or committing to better understanding your emotions and thought processes. Positive self-esteem and optimism are powerful healers!

Relationships and connections with others are crucial in satisfying your social and emotional needs. When you safely express your feelings to others, you can better address your emotions in real-time, which leads to a better understanding of how to behave in future similar situations. This is key to healthy stress management and development of coping skills when things get difficult. The best way to stay emotionally healthy is to seek external resources, whether a therapist or a self-help book, to learn how to express your feelings.

INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS

Boost your brain.

You contribute to your overall intellectual wellness when you exercise your mind, stimulate critical thinking, and seek out people and experiences that challenge you intellectually. This type of wellness is achieved through embracing new concepts, improving your skill sets, and seeking new challenges.

You can challenge your mind and intellect by participating in creatively stimulating mental activities. This can include signing up for a new course or workshop, reading an autobiography or memoir, or learning about new cultures through museums or theater. Through these activities, you’ll gain perspective and learn new skills and ideas that can be applied to your daily life.

FranklinRoadAcademy.com | 30

SOCIAL WELLNESS

Connect with others.

Social wellness refers to your relationship with your community and others. At its core, it’s the ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships that extend to satisfaction in all areas of your life, such as friends, family, school, and work. This area of wellness is important as it directly affects the way you show up as an individual and contribute to your community.

You can enhance your social wellness by simply expanding your network of people. Try reaching out to old friends and sparking new connections with those who share common interests and values. When you build these connections, your life will feel fuller and more enhanced. You can further this practice by creating spaces for more socialization and interaction. If you enjoy reading or cooking, this could be an opportunity to set up a virtual club or meeting to discuss and interact with like-minded people. As humans, we thrive off social connection and the positive energy found within a group setting.

SPIRITUAL WELLNESS

Nourish your soul.

Productive and healthy individuals seek meaning and purpose to nourish their lives. Spiritual wellness encompasses this idea, encouraging you to live by a guiding set of principles and belief systems that can help you approach life with a positive mindset. By aligning yourself with your spiritual and moral compass, you become more emotionally in tune with your own needs and the needs of others.

Spiritual wellness can be put into practice through daily meditation or prayer, a thirst to stay inquisitive, and a focus on listening to your gut morals in difficult situations. It is also an opportunity to allow for self-growth and introspection when it comes to the challenges that life may throw your way.

OCCUPATIONAL WELLNESS

Work with purpose.

In an effort to live a more vibrant and holistic life, your occupation should reflect your core values and overall mission in life. Occupational wellness is achieved when you can find a job or purpose in life that uses your gifts, skills, and talents. This wellness factor in your workplace will extend to feelings of satisfaction in all other areas of your life! If you find yourself leaving each workday drained of energy or dreading the next time you step foot in the office, you may not be on the right career path for achieving your best self. Devoting your energy to a rewarding career that speaks to your unique talents and gifts and aligns with your life goals is how you can achieve occupational wellness.

The idea of a career change can seem daunting and scary, but it’s an essential step toward finding your unique path and building a healthy vision for your future. Whether you have a knack for numbers or finances or an affinity for sales and public speaking, these vocational skills can be utilized by any company or business that speaks to your greater passions.

Occupational/Vocational wellness involves preparing and making use of your gifts, skills, and talents in order to gain purpose, happiness, and enrichment

in your life. The development of occupational satisfaction and wellness is related to your attitude about your work. Achieving optimal occupational wellness allows you to maintain a positive attitude and experience satisfaction/pleasure in your employment. Occupational wellness means successfully integrating a commitment to your occupation into a total lifestyle that is satisfying and rewarding.

LITTLE WOMEN

II’m racing down flights of stairs to make it to my audition on time. My volleyball game went a little long; if I don’t run, auditions might be over. I finally make it to the middle school commons, fill out my audition form, and walk in, heart pounding… ok, let’s back up a little bit. A few weeks before that, Mr. Bolen, our theater director, announced that the musical would be Little Women. Being the “I’d rather do anything else but read” kind of person, I had no clue what this story was. Luckily, Mr. Bolen decided to show us a video of the musical during drama class. Within the first 15 minutes, I was hooked. Jo March was my newest dream role. She was everything I wanted to be: adventurous, daring, unique, and sarcastic at the best times. Her nonstop energy and light just blew me away. There was no question as to whom I was going to audition for.

It came on a Sunday, a few days after my audition, which went much better than expected. When I got the email, I opened it, hands shaking, to see “Jo March: Dylan Anderson” on the top of the cast list. I completely freaked out. I couldn’t believe it was happening. I was going to be starring in my first high school musical, and I couldn’t wait to go back to school and begin rehearsals. While I was thrilled to play Jo, I was infinitely more excited to be with my cast mates, whom I hadn’t gotten to be with since The Little Prince. They are the ones who consistently make me a better performer and a better person. I don’t think you can find anyone as uplifting, encouraging, hilarious, and kind-hearted as the people in the FRA theater department. The cast is like a family; I would trade any role, even Jo March, to have that.

Fast forward a few months, and it’s opening night. Tech week has felt like a fever dream; everyone is running on 4 hours of sleep and Throat Coat tea. I’m in the dressing room, putting on an excessive amount of blush when it hits me. This is it. This is what I have been dreaming about for months now. I’m backstage, listening to Mr. Bolen tell the audience to silence their cellphones, when Kendall and Mae, some of my favorite people in the world, tap me on the shoulder. It was time for our preshow tradition. I grabbed their hands, and we prayed. At that moment, God’s presence and peace filled the room. I am eternally grateful for those girls and the reminder that God is always there for us. As our prayer ended, it was time to go on stage. I heard Roman, Professor Bhaer, say his lines. Then it was me. With as much adrenaline as a sophomore girl can hold in her body, I walked on stage and became Jo.

LITTLE WOMEN WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A PRODUCTION. IT TAUGHT ME LESSONS ABOUT FRIENDSHIP, PATIENCE, FORGIVENESS, AND LEADERSHIP.

One of my favorite moments during the show was when Annabel Oliff, cast as Marmee, sang “Days of Plenty.” Very few know this, but that song is exceptionally challenging to sing, even for the most talented performers. Annabel struggled during rehearsals and was frustrated to the point where she wanted to quit, but she never did. She practiced over and over until she figured it out. Nothing can beat how happy I was when she got through the whole song for the first time. We were both bawling, not just because of the acting but because it was so powerful to see her accomplish something that seemed impossible.

Learning to overcome challenges and push myself further than I thought brought me incredible

confidence and was another reminder of God’s faithfulness. I knew I would not have successfully performed all four shows without Him. He gave me the voice, the energy, and the amazing cast around me. I am so grateful for Him and His provision. Glory be to God. 

Dylan started at FRA her freshman year and is currently a sophomore. She has been playing volleyball since the sixth grade, and this season, was appointed to be a libero on the team. Dylan has been in numerous fine and performing arts productions at FRA, including Newsies, Little Prince, Little Women, Cocoa and Carols, and Evening with the Arts. Harper Hazlitt CLASS OF 2024

TThrough the FRA's fine and performing arts program, I've learned countless things, including how to be adaptable, seek new opportunities, and push myself to grow in the world changing around me. When I came to FRA in fifth grade, I knew I wanted to pursue my passion for the arts. I was confident FRA would sharpen my skills and help me become what I wanted to be.

The fine arts have always been a huge part of my life, and the programming at FRA was my incentive for becoming a student here. Immediately, I was welcomed into a community both in my school family and also my fine arts family. I became excited and hopeful for my future and for each day I could come and learn on this campus. I found an escape and a world of my own through theater, choir, and the mentors leading me in the department.

Mrs. Jewell has always been there for me. Before retiring last year, she taught me more than I could imagine. I know I will leave this place as a better musician because of her and as a better human who can find passion in the small things and joy in each day I take on. Profesora Moix believes in me daily and cares immensely for whom I am becoming as a student and woman. Mr. Sanford cares about investing in who I am and how I can strive to dig deeper and think critically. After taking so many AP courses and honor-level classes, I see the skill sets I have developed thanks to the

faculty. As I look around at each teacher I've had since arriving at FRA, I know they care deeply about me inside and outside the classroom.

Throughout my time in theater at FRA, a few moments remind me why I love being involved in the productions and fine arts. I think of the bonding moments I have had with castmates, all the work we put in, and the hilarious moments I make backstage and in rehearsals. We have senior shakedowns, which are moments to highlight the arts careers for our graduating seniors, and those

constantly remind me of how much we cherish not only each other but the work we do to stand on the stage and tell a story.

My castmates and fellow FRA students teach me countless lessons for the stage and life. I've learned to love people regardless of our similarities or differences. No two people are the same, and because of my castmates, I have learned to embrace those around me. I have had my eyes opened to how I can love someone for their heart and not anything else. Because

37 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

of those involved in FRA fine arts, I have become the most authentic and best version of myself.

Since my first years at FRA, I have watched myself transform. If this place has taught me anything, it is how to be myself. I've been further prepared and challenged in my musical and theatrical abilities, but I have been equipped with the confidence to do hard things. I have learned how to preserve and uplift others and seek a close-knit community that challenges and cheers me on. I have learned the biggest lesson: anything can happen

if you put your mind to it. If you put in the work, ask questions, and allow yourself to take opportunities, you can accomplish big things.

I am so grateful for each year I have had to participate in FRA's fine arts department and have felt supported in each avenue of my student experience here. Spiritually, I have seen my curiosity for Christ grow as I am shown the Gospel daily by those around me. Because of my involvement in FRA fine arts, I am open to continuing to become who I hope to be. I've been challenged to try new things, work hard, have fun, be open, and always be kind. 

Harper started at FRA in fifth grade. She has been in eight school productions, Cocoa and Carols, and Evening with the Arts. Beyond her theater and performing arts involvement, she is an active member of Service Club, the worship team, vocal ensemble, and serves as a student ambassador.

TY CLARK III '24

II can't imagine being at any other school besides FRA. I have experienced a genuine community of friends, athletes, teachers, and mentors throughout my time here. Since beginning here my freshman year, I have grown in ways I wouldn't have imagined for myself. Coming into the school, I only knew a few people, but now I have friendships and a family I feel like I've known forever.

During my freshman year, I was a different person I have broken out of my shell to become a better leader, more determined to overcome challenges, and skilled in a broad range of subjects. I started at FRA during the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although that didn't make things easy, I was still challenged academically and welcomed to participate and grow within our community. I immediately discovered a new side of myself regarding my work ethic. My teachers showed me how to work hard and achieve difficult things. I learned to take responsibility for finding my motivation and maintaining a high work ethic. I have had many faculty members pour into me along the way, helping me grow and develop into who I am as a student, athlete, and member of society.

Mrs. Berry, my chemistry teacher, has served as a mentor to me in many capacities. She taught me

how to better myself and strive to study hard while pushing myself further. When I was in her class, I didn't find the subject easy, and it was a lot of work, but I managed and found that I was more than capable of achieving the standards she had for us.

The confidence I gained from her chemistry course motivated me to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Now, I am an AP student who knows how to balance rigorous academics with my athletic commitments.

Students are encouraged to be involved in the life of this school, and I am so thankful for that. Alongside our Director of Diversity, Community, and Inclusion Dr. Thomas, I have helped plan and mentor for the Diversity Mentorship Program. Through the program, upper school students mentor younger, diverse students and help them grow spiritually, socially, and academically. Being a part of this program has given me a heart for serving youth and investing in their future. It is incredible to know I can impact the lives of others, as I see the faculty and staff impact me daily.

My coaches have developed me into a talented athlete with an awareness of his team, coaches, and the opposing team. They taught me the importance of determination, hard work, and humility. The 2022

season was one I will never forget. This school year, there has been a lot of excitement surrounding athletics, from developing athletes to the FRAternity, and community support on and off the field. The coaching staff has awoken something new in us this year, teaching us the principles of motivation, discipline, and passion. The culture and dynamics of the football program has shaped every aspect of who we are as a team and as brothers. We are all looking out for each other and our mutual relationship. Our compassion for one another has taken our team to another level and impacted each game this season.

This football season has sparked a fire in me and made me excited for my future in athletics. The game against Christ Presbyterian Academy is a moment that will stick with me forever. Winning that game on their Homecoming was an

inspirational moment. We realized that our hard work was paying off, that we had grit and determination, and above all, that we were doing something special.

As I look forward to my senior year at FRA, I can't help but think of all I have learned that I will take into next year. Spiritually, I know how to practice and model my life as Jesus did. I have learned to love people where they are and to be myself. I've been molded by teachers and faculty who want me to be my best self. I've learned the importance of surrounding myself with positive mentors, like my teachers, and being a mentor to others in return. FRA has made a huge impact on every aspect of my life. I will continue to embrace this special community, which inspires me every day to be the best version of myself.

Ty joined FRA as a freshman in 2020. He is a member of the Honor Council, varsity baseball team, and varsity football team, where he serves as a captain. He actively participates in the Diversity Mentorship Program, serves as a student ambassador, and volunteered for the NFL Legends Combine community event. Ty was named Most Outstanding Student his freshman and sophomore years. In football, he was named DII-AA Middle Region Offensive Player of the Year, TSSAA DII-AA First Team All-Region, and Mid-State Player of the Week for 2022.

Sterling Ambrose '83

STERLING AMBROSE '83 attended the opening day of Franklin Road Academy as a first grader in 1971 and spent the next 40 years on campus in some capacity. As an athlete, he set numerous school records in football and track. Highlighted during the fall of his junior year in 1981, Sterling set all of FRA’s school football records for rushing yards and touchdown records. In the spring of 1982, he set the school record in the high jump at the height of 6’ 4” and won the Class A TSSAA State Championship title. As team captain in the fall of 1982, he finished his football career with 3,445 yards rushing and 44 touchdowns with a career per rush average of 9.9 yards. FRA only lost two football games in the last 24 games of Sterling’s career. Sterling’s postseason football accolades included, two-time team MVP, TSSAA Class A MVP, All-Nashville Team, and being the only FRA football player to be named to the prestigious Sports Writer’s All Classifications All-State team.

Following graduation, Sterling attended the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in management. While attending the University

of Tennessee, Sterling was asked to assist with the Franklin Road Academy football team by Head Coach George Weicker. Sterling was incredibly dedicated to the football program and spent over three years driving back and forth between Knoxville and Nashville every Friday night for games. After graduating from UTK, his love for FRA and coaching kept him involved with FRA sports for many years. He coached middle school and upper school football and track for several years before following his father’s legacy by joining the FRA Board of Trustees. He served eighteen years on the board and two years as chairman.

Sterling married his high school sweetheart Beth Eatherly (FRA class of ’84) in 1988, and they have been married for 34 years. They are both members of the 12Year Club and had three children attend FRA. After years of operating his family’s 156-year-old Ambrose Printing Company, he sold the business to his twin brother John and has been principal/president of Signcraft, Inc. for the last 14 years.

TATE ROGERS and his family have been a part of the FRA community and athletic programs from the start. Tate’s parents, Sissy and “Big” Tate were actively involved and supportive of the school from its founding. Their passion and athletic backgrounds undoubtedly helped reinforce the School’s focus on supporting and encouraging student participation in athletics and extracurricular activities. For many years, his family lived in the Peach Blossom House, currently known as the Peach Orchard Hill House, located in the heart of campus.

Tate began playing sports at a very early age, and he quickly developed into an accomplished multisport athlete, competing in football, basketball, and track. During his junior year football season, he was named All-Metro by the Tennessean, All-State by the Associated Press, and All-Nashville by the Nashville Banner. In his senior year, he was again named AllMetro and was awarded Metro Offensive Player of the Year. In track and field, Tate competed at the State

Championships three years in a row in the 800 meters. He finished in sixth place his sophomore year, second place his junior year, and was the State Champion his senior year. In addition, Tate was named All-Metro his senior year basketball season. Tate was also Vice President of the Student Body and a member of the 12-Year Club.

Following graduation from FRA, Tate attended Princeton University on a football scholarship and earned his bachelor’s degree. He currently lives in Telluride, Colorado, with his wife, Stephanie, and three children, Rosabel, Roscoe, and Morgan.

“I’m grateful to my family, coaches, and teammates for all the love, support, and camaraderie through the years. Coaches Weicker, Tucker, Zaborowski, Hudson, Clark, Williams, Andrews, Gaskins, Muckle, and Link had an incredible impact on my life. I have fond memories of going to battle alongside my teammates, and the bonds that were forged remain strong today.”

Eric Brandon '00

ERIC BRANDON attended FRA from 1994 to 2000 and was a standout multi-sport athlete competing in football and baseball. During his upper school football career, Eric was named Regional Player of the Year as a sophomore, All-Region his sophomore, junior and senior years, and All-State his senior year. As a member of the varsity baseball team, he was named All-Region, All-State, and District MVP all four years of high school. In his junior and senior years, Eric was named Player of the Year. The baseball team captured the State Championship title his senior year, and Eric was named State Tournament MVP and second-team All-American.

Coach Edward Zaborowski shared, “I remember Eric as the consummate athlete. Very few high school athletes have the control of their body as Eric had. His movements seemed effortless but belied the amount of practice and preparation that made that possible. Whether on the football or baseball field or the basketball court, coaches relied on Eric to make the deciding play. Eric was a fierce competitor with a humble heart—truly a great athlete.”

Eric earned his bachelor’s degree from Auburn University, where he received a scholarship to play baseball. As a sophomore, he pitched the only nine-inning perfect game in Auburn baseball history, leading the team to a 9-0 win against Murray State and making him the first SEC pitcher to achieve this accomplishment since 1963.

After graduating from Auburn, Eric played for the Minnesota Twins organization for two years. From 2010-2016, he coached a youth travel baseball team and still provides pitching and hitting lessons to local athletes.

Kristin Garman Salato'05

KRISTIN GARMAN SALATO was born and raised in Nashville and enrolled at Franklin Road Academy in the 9th grade. Kristin embodied the characteristics of an ideal student-athlete.

Starting her freshman year as a forward, Kristin set single-season goal records during both her freshman and sophomore seasons. After a teammate tore her ACL before Garman’s junior season, she was moved to defense and still managed 76 goals and 56 assists in her high school career, setting new FRA records. Garman was a four-year All-District, All-Region, and All-State performer and was named the 2004 Regional Player of the year. In 2003 and 2004, she was distinguished as the District MVP and the Tennessean Player of the Year. Garman led her team to A/AA State Championship titles in 2002 and 2004 and a State Runner-Up performance in 2003. She earned team MVP honors three straight years (2002-2004). Garman competed for the Brentwood Impact in club team play, winning the Tennessee State Title three times. After her high school career, she was named an NSCAA All-American and Gatorade and NSCAA State Player of the Year in 2005. Garman was tabbed as an All-American in both club and high school play.

“I am incredibly grateful to FRA Head Coach Ken McDonald and my Brentwood Impact coaches, Brandy and Daniel Gagliano, for their dedication to the sport and me personally. Much of what I accomplished was

due largely to their commitment to helping me develop to my full potential as an athlete; for that, I am forever thankful,” said Kristin.

Initially committing to Florida State University, she followed Coach Patrick Baker to the University of Georgia, where she started as a freshman at right back, earning SEC Player of Week honors early in her college career. After her playing days at UGA, Kristin played professionally for the Atlanta Silverbacks and Club River Plate (Argentina).

After retiring from soccer, she went to nursing school at Belmont University, earning her BSN. She currently works at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Labor and Delivery and has enjoyed coaching youth soccer and giving individual lessons over the years. She is married to Jay Salato (FRA class of ’03), and they have two children, Micah and Sienna.

55 | 4700 Fall/Winter 2022

EMILY CANADY SMEYKAL attended FRA from 5th through 12th grade. A natural, passionate athlete, she played sports every season they were offered. She was a soccer goalie, basketball post player, and softball catcher. She served as captain of all three teams and competed in the state tournament for every sport. In soccer, she was an All-State goalie with three State Championships. In basketball, she joined the 1,000 Point Club her senior year. During her softball career, she was voted offensive MVP and a member of the All-State team, and she broke hitting records for the team, even hitting a home run over the fence onto I-65.

“I am extremely thankful for my coaches, Ken McDonald, Chris Hart, Jack Nunnally, and Kris Climer, for their guidance and support and the many strength coaches and athletic trainers who kept me as healthy as possible. I also want to thank my dad, Tiff Canady, who is still

keeping all of FRA’s athletic fields in top-notch shape and who filmed and photographed all of my games,” Smeykal said. “The community, education, sports and extracurricular activities, and Christian environment at FRA set me up for success, and I am so thankful to call FRA home.”

After attending the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, Emily returned home to spend the spring season assisting the FRA girls varsity basketball team, who clinched second place at the State Tournament. She also served as the head coach of the middle school softball team and led them to an HVAC Championship.

Emily now lives in Nolensville, Tennessee with her husband Zach (FRA class of ‘08) and their son, Nathan. Emily is a local small business owner. She is also a member of the FRA Alumni Council.

THE 1984 STATE CHAMPION BASEBALL

TEAM achieved what no other team at FRA in any sport can ever duplicate by winning the first TSSAA State Championship in school history.

This team of talented young men had a stated goal to win it all. And win it they did! Under Head Coach Jerry Link and led by the BIG 4 – Shawn Carder, Steve Johnson, John Woodard, and Waddy Hammond — the team started the season with a trip to Florida, winning three of the four games against much larger schools and scoring 10+ runs in each of the victories.

Following a seven-game winning streak, the team entered the Columbia Academy Invitational as the number one seed in the division with an 11-3-1 and a perfect district record of 6-0. The team won the tournament, achieving the first-ever baseball championship of any kind.

The team breezed through the early rounds of the playoffs. The first challenge came from Nashville Christian School, who rested their star pitcher in a loss to FRA in the district championship game, allowing him to face FRA for the fourth and final game in the region championship. FRA came from behind to defeat NCS 6-4 and advanced to the State Quarterfinals.

FRA faced the State Quarterfinal opponent, Upperman, at home. Upperman was ranked #1 in Tennessee. Even

1984 Baseball Team

with ace pitcher Steve Johnson on the mound, FRA fell behind 6-2 in the 5th inning. Two solid defensive plays ended the 5th inning, and it was FRA’s turn at the plate. With the score 6-4 and two outs, Upperman intentionally walked the clean-up hitter Waddy Hammond to load the bases. Junior Hailey Williamson’s 2-run single tied the game. The next batter, Jon Zadick, drove the ball over the right fielder’s head for a base-clearing triple to take the lead. The team held on for the final two innings to win the game 8-7, advancing to the State Semifinals. The next matchup was against Johnson City University School. After exploding with 12 runs early in the game, FRA held on to win 12-11 and secured their spot in the State Championship Series.

Just days before the State Championship, tragedy struck the team when #2 starting pitcher Steve Higgins sustained life-threatening injuries in an accident while working underneath his truck. With Higgins injured, winning the first game of the series with Steve Johnson on the mound was crucial. FRA scored three runs in the top of the 1st inning and went on to win 6-3. In game two, the bats came alive in the 1st inning with eight runs and went on to win the Championship game, 9-4.

Winning the first State Championship in FRA history truly means a great deal to the 1984 FRA Baseball team members.“This is the greatest day of my life, fellas! The greatest day of my life,” said Head Coach Jerry Link.

Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award was created in 2005 to show appreciation to those individuals who have made significant contributions to FRA. Those chosen to receive this award have influenced our community through their accomplishments, dedication, and service while at FRA and following graduation.

WILLIAM L. (CHIP) CAMPBELL, JR. graduated from Franklin Road Academy in 1987. While attending FRA, he participated in a wide range of activities, including football, basketball, track, rifle team, student government, the upper school spring musical for four years, Latin club, and forensics. After graduating from FRA, Chip received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a degree in Political Science in 1991. He then served for seven years in the United States Marine Corps, primarily in aviation. Chip received his law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2001. After many years in private practice, he was nominated in July 2017

to serve as a U.S. District Judge in the Middle District of Tennessee; he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and began judicial service in January 2018.

Chip’s youngest son, John, is an 8th grader at FRA. His father served as FRA’s head of school from 1981 to 1992, and his oldest sister graduated from FRA in 1980. He is a member of the Belmont College of Law Advisory Board and serves as a Blue & Gold Officer for the U.S. Naval Academy. In addition to John, Chip is the proud father of Liam, a 12th grader, and Hannah Britt, a college sophomore. 

"In 1985, my amazing journey at FRA began. Twelve short years later, my class graduated and went off to begin adulthood. Twenty-five years after that, a new journey began at FRA with me as a parent and my daughter, Grayson, as a student. With all the new buildings, clubs, athletics, and programs, the school has many great additions since my time. However, some qualities have not changed.

Still alive and strong at FRA are the intangible qualities of lifelong friends, Christian ethics and tenets, a fantastic sense of community, superb academic preparedness, self-respect and confidence, and drive that serves all well in his or her adult life. As I look around and see many other classmates or friends from other schools now at FRA as parents, and even as teaching faculty, my wife and I are so excited to experience this incredible journey with Grayson.”

PHILANTHROPY REPORT

2021-22

63 | 2021-22 Philanthropy Report
FRANKLIN ROAD ACADEMY

Thank you for reading our Report on Philanthropy for the 2021-22 school year. This report highlights the many who have given their time, talent, and treasure, empowering us to fulfill our school's mission to provide a challenging academic experience in an inclusive Christian community. Our mission is unique and compels us to pursue excellence in all we do.

In the following pages, we celebrate our Unique Moment in Time capital campaign, our Annual Fund, named endowed funds, scholarships and awards, alumni giving, and special events like our Golf Classic and annual Stars and Guitars events. You will also find lists of volunteers who have supported the school by giving their time and energy. In reviewing these efforts, I hope you share the same sense of gratitude for the impact they have had on the lives of the students and families we serve here at Franklin Road Academy.

The incredible support our school receives reflects the strong sense of community we have here at FRA. Philanthropy is the difference between good schools and great schools. When members of our community invest in the school as they are able, no matter the amount, we share in the impact the school has in the lives of our students. That is why we emphasize the importance of participation in annual giving each year. It reflects a remarkable community invested in the mission of our school. We are proud that, over the last five years, we have averaged over 90% parent participation in our annual fund when the industry average of independent schools across the country is less than 70%. When we give, we have the opportunity to actively participate in the school's mission to "develop leaders of integrity and purpose."

In this report, you will see testimonies of a few current families and a family of an alumnus of what compelled them to support the school philanthropically. Reading their stories, you will hear that our families believe in our school's mission and have witnessed the steadfast approach to delivering the mission with excellence daily. Whether it be through diverse learning experiences, the strength of our inclusive Christian community, or the opportunities we provide for students to pursue their passions, each of them has experienced the return on this community's investment in the school.

I am deeply appreciative of our board of trustees and leadership who faithfully serve our community. We are blessed with strong leadership, and our students and families are the beneficiaries of their service. I am also thankful for our development and communications teams for the work they do, often behind the scenes, to ensure our school has the resources it needs to provide an excellent student experience.

The collective efforts of our community have had an incredible impact on our school, and the progress we have seen on our campus has been remarkable. I am humbled by God's faithfulness and live in the hopeful anticipation of what He will accomplish in and through this school in the years to come. Thank you for partnering with us.

Sincerely,

Capital Campaign

CELEBRATING THE UNIQUE MOMENT IN TIME CAMPAIGN

In 2017, following a year of strategic planning and a subsequent master planning process, FRA’s historic capital campaign was launched. A generous donor offered the school its largest single gift ever to kick off this important effort, inspiring the FRA Board of Trustees and our community to move forward with a comprehensive capital campaign that has had a transformational impact on our campus and, more importantly, our student experience. Today we celebrate the successful conclusion of this $27 million capital campaign – the largest in FRA’s fifty-year history!

The overall goal of the campaign was to ensure that the architecture of FRA’s campus both honors the school’s unique mission, purpose, and vision and that all of our spaces reflect the exceptional academic experience we provide and the extraordinary interactions that take place between our students and our faculty. Aesthetics and spaces matter, and today the demand and interest in an FRA education have never been greater. Additionally, during this campaign, FRA’s Annual Fund and the overall endowment doubled in size. Three newly named endowment funds were established to support student financial aid and students during Interim Week, as well as funding for faculty professional development.

We celebrate...

THE SCARLETT FAMILY CHAPEL

In 2005, FRA purchased First Christian Church, which included the chapel and the entire south campus. This property was of strategic importance to the school; however, specific plans for its use were undetermined at the time, and the chapel wasn’t used for more than a decade.

In early 2018, the chapel was completely restored and opened for the class of 2018 baccalaureate that May. The chapel, named The Scarlett Family Chapel after a generous benefactor, is a visible representation of FRA’s inclusive Christian mission and is one of the only spaces on campus that can hold the entire student body and faculty. The Scarlett Family Chapel is used daily by upper school for convocation, weekly by middle school for chapel, and by our entire school community for important events such as our annual Veterans Day assembly, Spiritual Emphasis Week, choral and Christmas concerts, and baccalaureate.

We celebrate...

THE WEICKER CENTER FOR STUDENT LIFE

One of the great hallmarks of FRA is its sense of community, and the Weicker Center for Student Life provides the perfect backdrop for bringing all students – pre-k3 through 12th grade and faculty –together every day to celebrate this asset and build and strengthen our community.

The Weicker Center opened in August 2019 and was named by the capital campaign’s lead donor in memory of beloved teacher and coach, George Weicker, for the many contributions he made in the classroom and on the athletic fields and because he loved and mentored so many FRA students over the years.

THE ATHLETIC CENTER AND CROCKETT & TANSIL FITNESS CENTER

At FRA, what happens outside the classroom is almost as important as what happens in it, and athletics is essential to a complete and rich educational experience. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities, and more than 80 percent of students in grades 5-12 choose to participate in at least one sport per year.

FRA’s athletic center opened during the summer of 2020. The 11,000-square-foot facility houses the stateof-the-art 3,500-square-foot Crockett & Tansil Fitness Center, coaches’ offices, four new team locker rooms, a training room, and athletic storage. The athletic center also features a digitized Hall of Fame that celebrates the athletic accomplishments of our students from the beginning of the school’s founding in 1971 to the present. There are four windows overlooking the performance gymnasium from this space. The building connects to the athletic fields on The Hill and features spectacular panoramic views from both locations. 

WHY
GIVE

WWhen you envision where your children will attend school, you hope to find a school that embodies your family values. When we chose FRA for our family, we knew it would represent who we were and what we stood for : structure, foundation, community, and opportunity. There is excitement around this place because the school is always proactive at becoming the best it can be. We found immediate comfort knowing our children, Fletcher and Charlotte, and in the future, Franklin would be on the same campus for their tenure while being supported by the same mission that drives this institution. Transformation and growth have been accomplished across campus since we arrived, yet the work continues. We hope to see the same continuous transformation in the lives of our kids and our family.

We found FRA to be the best fit for our family, allowing a challenging environment academically while still emphasizing love and Christian foundations. The well-rounded social, academic, and emotional development for students was what we were hoping for and have found since being welcomed into this community. We immediately saw why so many choose FRA for their family—the family-like feeling. There is a hands-on approach to how decisions are made for each student. Teachers lead confidently and teach our children to conquer any challenge set before them.

As we have grown as a family and now spent five years as part of the FRA community, we have realized how unique and rare this community truly is and why it stands out amongst other independent schools. Dr. West takes the time to know each family and student by name, and each faculty and staff member caters to the individualized needs of the students. Our children

feel valued and at home on campus. FRA is working daily to challenge our children and help them become the best they can be, not only for when they walk across the stage to receive their diplomas but for the world that awaits them.

We are so proud to call ourselves an FRA family. We are proud of the forward-thinking decisions taking place for our children. We are proud of the rigorous curriculum shaping our children's minds and the foundational impact being made on their hearts.

At a place continuing to emphasize excellent programs, exceptional curriculum, and an inclusive community, it's easy to want to give back. Giving is something we feel led to do. There is no greater need for us than to invest in our children's lives and those around them. Our giving visibly impacts each aspect of this campus and the individuals that make it so unique. We are humbled to see the fruits of our labor materialize as FRA stays competitive and grows in all facets. Giving isn't just about the now but also the future; we find it an honor to give back to a place that offers our family so much every day. 

Franklin Road Academy is a wellrounded experience that allows families to invest in their children academically, spiritually, and socially. Each year, we watch this place become better and more impactful in the lives of our family and the Nashville community.

WWe wanted to find a school for our family that shared our common goal of weaving love into everything that is done. After seeing how Franklin Road Academy loves and leads each child on this campus, we see Christ being highlighted in every aspect of this community. From the moment we learned of FRA, we could feel how special a place it was. We became a prospective family during the pandemic, and even as we were meeting faces over Zoom, touring a nearly empty campus during the summer, and unsure of how the next school year would play out, we could feel God's presence at FRA.

Franklin Road Academy is unique in many ways, but the mission of this place is what helps it stand apart from other independent schools across the country. An inclusive Christian community is precisely what you find here. Each person is included, known, seen, and loved, no matter who you are. This place has an honest mission where the actions match the words and phrases used. Each faculty and staff member comes to campus each day ready to invest in who our children are right now and who they will become through each year of their lives. As we looked ahead, we saw how this community speaks volumes whether you currently have children enrolled or have a child who was an alumnus of the school. The message is simple and reflects that this is a place we are fortunate enough to be able to invest in.

Our kids, Bryce, Anelle, and Quinn, can be challenged academically while also being encouraged to reach for the sky in everything they do, both inside and outside the classroom. FRA focuses on little things that significantly impact the lives of our kids and the community at large. In 5th grade, our son Bryce

was incredibly interested in marble racing and had Mrs. Nelson come alongside him to create a space where he was seen and loved. Within a few weeks of noticing his interest, she helped him develop a marble club so others could share in his passions and interest. Soon, he was able to not only expand his innovation skills outside the classroom but wanted to continue this work at home. Educators at FRA invest and pour into our kids daily. The results of that love and attention allow our children to come home feeling supported, as do we.

As we look to the future as an FRA family, we look forward to the opportunities allotted to us as parents. We can participate in Bible studies, volunteer at events, and grow alongside other families. FRA allows us to foster connections, and we can't wait to see how that benefits our family through each stage of life. Being on one campus, we will have the chance to grow with the same families, supporting each other through what life brings. A campus focused on guiding families and students sets us up to better support our children at home, and we couldn't be more thankful.

We are so grateful to be a part of this community, and we feel incredibly blessed to have our children attend such a unique place. Franklin Road Academy's intentionality has enormously impacted our family's life in the last three years. We were immediately included and welcomed, which is why we choose to give. We give to places we know can make the most impact. This institution is raising our kids and their generation. It only makes sense to be a part of what God is already doing on this campus. We feel honored to not only be a family here but to be able to come alongside the work that God is doing. 

THE SPOSATO FAMILY
Mike, and Paul '21 77 | 2021-22 Philanthropy Report
WHY WE GIVE
Grace,

IIt is always a challenge to switch to a new school, especially when the switch is in the middle of high school. This was the challenge we faced with our son Paul when we arrived in Nashville. But the challenge was met when, on the recommendation of a friend, we came for a visit to Franklin Road Academy. We learned about the school, and when Paul had finished touring, we realized that this was a place aligned with who he was and who we are. Paul chose FRA immediately and wanted nothing more than to call this place home for his last two high school years.

FRA is unique in many ways, but the emphasis on faith, community, and innovative academics is where we saw the school's mission aligned with our family's goals. Paul found his footing at FRA and was pushed to go further –further perhaps than we were expecting. He was making friends, and FRA welcomed our family into a caring community.

This campus' hallways are filled with faculty and staff happy to be here. The community is fueled by an optimism permeating not only in the classrooms but also the athletic fields and courts, the auditoriums and theaters, and, perhaps most importantly, the chapels and gathering spaces where people come together to encourage each other and appreciate the gifts and achievements around them. Through his two years as an FRA student, Paul was thoughtfully guided and pushed to new heights. There is a call to be challenged at FRA and a faculty that shows how to execute so you can achieve the hard things while never losing sight of the important things. Paul grew in confidence, ambition, and discipline. FRA lit a spark in Paul that has ignited and grown since he went to college, and we know it will continue to roar inside him.

FRA challenged Paul to define himself and not let the world do it for him. He was refined in character, ability, and heart. He developed soft skills to allow him to contribute and lead as circumstances warrant. We watched our son walk across the stage receiving a diploma, confident he would make a difference. FRA is a place that teaches students the importance of ability, confidence, and the simple thought that 'they can.'

Due to successfully completing several academically rigorous courses at FRA, Paul ended up a semester ahead in college. He gained collegiate credit and was exposed to the level of scholarship he would be expected to exercise at Wake Forest. FRA is unique in allowing students to participate and grow in all areas while not anticipating them to be experts. Paul became a leader due to programs such as Dance Marathon, where he learned he could make a difference in the lives of those around him. We saw our son's heart develop in kindness and awareness.

Franklin Road Academy has blessed Paul and our entire family, and we are hopeful for the continued focus on development, excellence, and community. We give because we love this place and everything it stands for. If you love something, you give selflessly, just as FRA faculty and staff gave selflessly to our family's life while Paul was here. We try to support the communities that support us and realize our gifts will only be gifts for others. As a family, we live with the personal mission of knowing we are blessed and hope to bless others. Just as FRA has blessed us unfathomably, we hope to bless future generations with the same impact we experienced. 

ALUMNI GIVING

Dear FRA Alumni,

Last year was a special time for the FRA community as we celebr ated our 50th Anniversary. It quickly became apparent that all of our gatherings had one thing in common—a great appreciation for the heart of FRA and our mission to provide a challenging educational experience in an inclusive Christian community.

Alumni engagement grew last year with increases in giving of time, talent, and treasure, all in support of the exciting initiatives taking place here on campus. Many alumni have offered their time to celebrate and connect with fellow alumni, while others have volunteered to serve on a committee, speak in a classroom, or support our school community events. We were overjoyed to see the number of alumni who made an Annual Fund gift in honor of the faculty that positively impacted their life.

Thank you for being such an important part of our school community. I look forward to seeing you in the coming year! If you have not visited campus recently, I invite you to schedule a tour with me to see the incredible work being done here at FRA.

WHY WE GIVE

BLAIR, MARK, AND ALLY BEGO

101 | 2021-22 Philanthropy Report DONOR STORY

WWhen we first started looking at schools, we knew that a community-focused campus with incredible academics, programs, and a firm foundation would be hard to find. That is why we feel so lucky to have ended up right where we are—as an FRA family! The list of factors that led us to choose FRA is quite extensive, but we still can’t fully explain or put into words the feeling we had the moment we first stepped onto campus.

Over the past four years, we’ve watched our daughter Ally grow into a spiritually, academically, and socially well-rounded young lady. She was immediately welcomed onto this campus with open arms, and as a result, the community at FRA has become like a second family to us. We have watched Ally build new friendships and genuine connections with those around her, while we have been fortunate enough to do the same. Our daughter’s peers go above and beyond to support one another, as do all the parents on this campus. The faculty members nurture, support, and care for each child, adding yet another layer to the solid foundation being formed in their lives.

We love seeing our daughter grow up in a small, close-knit community where everyone meets on one campus. The opportunity to grow throughout different stages of life with other families and stay connected from lower to upper school is truly a privilege. We have watched students from each division show up to events to cheer one another on, meet together for Panther

Pals throughout the school year, and even walk each other to class. We will never forget when a senior football player opened our door at morning drop-off, greeted Ally with a warm smile, took her hand, and walked her to class. These little moments make a huge and lasting impact, and FRA focuses on ensuring they take place each day. We are so thankful we found a place where students can look around at those older than them and say, “I can do that, too. I want to be like them one day.”

When you become a part of the FRA community, you are invited to be involved in something special and unique to Nashville. Beyond supporting the school financially, we also choose to give our time, energy, and talents to help continue to make this place unique for each child who steps foot on campus. We give because FRA provides our daughter the space to flourish, being challenged with a rigorous curriculum and met with the undivided attention of truly remarkable teachers.

When you are welcomed into something special, you want to keep it that way. Franklin Road Academy is already showing dividends through our child, and we believe the best is yet to come! We support FRA because we see their mission being lived out each day through every single person who encounters our daughter and whom we encounter. We are honored to invest not only in our daughter’s future but the future of FRA.

"When you become a part of the FRA community, you are invited to be involved in something special and unique to Nashville."
