Aspiring Athletes Mark Commonwealth Day Monday 9 March was Commonwealth Day! Read about how we celebrated that afternoon at Government House with some of our brightest young sporting talents. We also welcome the Minister for the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones, we hear what London 2012 Olympic Games Chair Sebastian Coe has to say about our GC2018 preparations and we have a chat with one of Australia’s greatest ever marathon runners, Rob de Castella.Eighteen of south east Queensland’s brightest sporting talents commemorated Commonwealth Day 2015 on Monday 9 March at Government House in Brisbane. The Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, and Mrs de Jersey, hosted an afternoon tea in support of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC). According to GOLDOC Chairman, Nigel Chamier OAM, the guests, all aged between 14 and 21, represented the 17 sports on the 2018 program, including para-sport. “Since 1977, Commonwealth Day has been celebrated throughout the Commonwealth on the second Monday in March,” Mr Chamier said. “This year’s theme, A Young Commonwealth, recognised the global potential, capacity and contribution of young people in issues awareness and international co-operation,” he said. Commonwealth Games Minister, Kate Jones, said GC2018 will bring tremendous benefits to the Gold Coast and inspire a new generation of athletes to work hard and pursue their dreams of competing at an international level. “We’re almost three years out from the Gold Coast Games and it’s great to see so many aspiring athletes excited about the event and training hard so they can make it there to compete,” Minister Jones said. “I hope to see many of the faces here today again on the Gold Coast in 2018.
