MEET OUR SUPER MODEL DENVER COLORADO

MICAYLA MAES Before you begin to create a Modeling Portfolio you

should think about what type of modeling you can do or want to do. A portfolio of a Freelance model would probably include a variety of different types of photos between 10 and 25, while a portfolio of a high fashion model would have high fashion images, and so on. So be realistic from the very onset of your career to avoid any setbacks or rejections due to the fact that you are attempting to enter a type of modeling that is not best suited for you. However; if you are thinking that you want to do all kinds of modeling then practice is the key to posing. One major rule in doing a photoshoot with a photographer, never ever be late. Its a very tight community and photographers talk about model excuses, no shows, cutting the photoshoot sooner than expected. Be smart and please dont be late. Come camera ready to shoot, 6 | Model of Colorado.com | June 2017

time is very valuable to both of you. If you don’t feel comfortable with a lingerie shoot then don’t do it, It will show in the photos. You should always make sure that you are dealing with a professional photographer, especially when it comes to test shoots. There are lots of people luring and scamming young, impressionable models, and for this reason you should always consult a professional photographer for taking your photographs, especially if you are just starting out in the business. . So it’s worth to invest a bit of time and money in finding a professional to work with. Professional Photographers will have you sign a Model Release form.

Portfolios can include, causal, swim, lingerie, editorial, commercial, fashion, cataloge poses, etc. Models should also have a updated comp card hand out to potential agencies, designers and photographers.

LETS TALK ABOUT COPYRIGHT Copyright A work is considered copyrighted from the moment of creation. In addition to photographs, other works subject to copyright restrictions are motion pictures, books, sculptures, architectural elements (not the building as a whole), textile designs, music, even some murals on walls. Photographs should not be altered in anyway shape or form without written permission from the photographer. Here are examples of works that are NOT copyrighted: Works created by the U.S. Government, ideas, short phrases, titles, printed forms and facts to name a few. “Facts” include things like cooking recipes, chemical formulations, telephone directories and databases. “Ideas” include things like dressing children up or posing a bride and groom or a model in a certain fashion.

Who owns the copyright? The creator of the photograph is usually the copyright owner. A client does not obtain the right by purchasing copies of the work. Nor does the presence of someone in a photograph make them a “co-creator” of the work. However, there are some instances in which the photographer is not the copyright owner. These exceptions are as follows: Employees- When an employee creates an image in the course of their job, the company is considered to be the legal author. This is part of the “work-forhire” doctrine. In contrast, independent contractors own the copyright to the works they create, unless there is an agreement to the contrary. Signed Agreement – An artist who is contracted to create a work that will be incorporated into a larger work may also fall under “work-for-hire,” but only if they sign an agreement to that effect.

COPYRIGHT OWNERSHIP Copyright ownership is not the same as ownership of a photographic print, digital file or even a film negative. Without a written agreement by the Photographer, transferring the rights to the client, all the client owns is the physical object. The copyright owner of a photograph (The Photographer), has the exclusive right to, or to authorize others to, do the following: 1. Reproduce the work 2. Prepared derivatives based on the original work. 3. Distribute copies of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership. 4. To display the work publicly.

PHOTOGRAPHERS Protecting your copyright: Copyright is a federal law, and actions can only be heard in federal court. A photographer cannot sue for infringement in any state court, including small claims/magistrates court. Protect your copyright by clearly marking your photographs, whether printed or electronic. Registering your work with the U.S. Copyright Office also helps, as it will improve your access to damages should you need/choose to enforce your copyright in court. Visit these websites for additional information on copyright: U.S. Copyright Office – www.copyright.gov. Copyright Alliance – www.copyrightalliance.org Copyright Defense – www.copyrightdefense.com

Lets Talk Model Comp Cards What is a Comp Card? A composite – “comp card” (sometimes called a ZED) is a model’s business card. Its a card that is approximately Post Card size in print to hand out to potential Agencies. Photographers, Colthing Designers, etc. Just like your portfolio, your comp card must tell a story – not a short story – just the abridged version of your portfolio. The card needs to show the obvious – that you are beautiful and in great shape. (Your card also needs to show range. Range of age, expressions, emotions and characters are all important to your comp card.

5 good WOW photos, your contact information and stats are all that is needed. Head Shot, Swim, Casual, Fashion, Editorial. Of course this will depend on the type of modeling that you want to do. Get your cards printed on premium 130# Silk card stock. Dont skimp on this, it will be your first impression. Having your comp card prepared digitally and then burned to a CD (printer ready), ensures you the best possible quality. You can also have your Comp Card online. Stats for women: Hair color, Eye color, Height, Weight, Bust, Cup, Waist, Hips, Dress size, Shoe size. Stats for Men: Hair color, Eye color, Height, Weight, Suit or Chest size, Waist, Inseam, Shoe size

MODELS Please be camera ready for photoshoots to photographers:

Model: Kenzie Long

Don’t forget to do your nails or have them done before the shoot. So

many models forget to do their nails and it makes for horrible photos. Please be professional. If your going to do Boudoir barefooted make sure your feet are clean,

Hint for Facebook Photos:

Make a modeling page and only put modeling photos on it. No friends, family, boyfriends, parties, group shots, political things, you will limit yourself big time,

Modelling Agencies:

If you want to apply to a Modeling Agency, do your research. Most modeling agencies work for money, that’s ovious, they will try to get money from models, via classes, photoshoots with only their photographers that charge lots of money. Be very careful with contracts, they will own you, you will need to get approval for just about anything like no photoshoots outside of the agency, No magazine inserts unless approved by the Agency, They promise you everything and get not nuch in return, We Know of a few models that worked their butts off in the middle summer for 8 hours in heels and black outfits promised them pay and they never received a dime. They also had classes for the models and come to find out models were charged diffenent prices for the very same class. Just think of this, if a modeling agency has 5000 plus models. do you think the models they are working and making money, I doubt it. Stay with small Agencies and ones that are reputable if thats yourgoal.

THE FASHION WORLD My thoughts are that, if you want to do Runway/Cat walk,

learn how to walk and do the turn around which it the most difficult for new models. Watch You Tube and practice practice and more practice, It’s not easy. Go to some Runway Shows and watch the models do their walk. You will be able to tell imediately the novice from the profesionals. Try to be the best of the best, and keep practicing. Get to know models and Colthing designers, mingle mingle mingle with them. Hand out comp cards., and try to get contacts. Always try to look like a model to turn heads. They will start noticing you. Don’t bad mouth other models designers, or photographers it will be a disaster, no Drama. Please don’t worry about height, designers want to sell clothing to everyone, it’s all about the clothing not the model. 10 | Model of Colorado.com | June 2017

SO WHAT’S A GOOD WAY TO CREATE A PORTFOLIO ?

This depends on if you are going to show it to

an Agency. A port folio should be well rounded with only the WOW photos. This includes a variety of photographs previously mentioned on page 6, and it will also depend on what the agency wants, either in print form or digital, Most agencies are going towards the digital portfolios so the model should ask the agency. If you have a tablet that will be best, (not a cell phone). Agencies look for and have clients that need specific shots whether it would be head shots, ligerie, swim wear, casualware, commercial, pictorals, cataloge, jewelery, editorial, fashion, etc. For example: if an Agency has a client that designes swim suits and is in need of sample photos of a particular model in swim, that client want to see only swim ware shots, approximately 12 wow photos, posing would probably be more of a cataloge style pose, so have these shots stored in an album/folder on your tablet. If the client is looking for comerical editorial fashion shots, then again have these stored in a separate album/folder on your tablet. It would be a good idea to do this for all of your photoshots and keep them them updated always. LIST OF A FEW AWESOME LOCAL DESINERS IN COLORADO

Denise Renee, a fabulous designer in Denver Colorado. Denise was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. Denise started in her middle school years; “I would alter and make my own clothes”. In 1987 Denise went to cosmetology school, following in her mother’s footsteps. After completing cosmetology, she had realized the need for make-up artists, so that is when Denise went back to school and took several courses. With all of the demands of being a single parent, She then started making Halloween costumes for her kids, and started small, cheerleader outfit, went to Diva Dolls then to Harajuku dolls as well as Angel Wings. At that point she knew she had a creative side, so Denise started making costumes yearly.

I am natural creative artist. I don’t use patterns and I never

had any training. In 2009 I had a tragic event happen in my life. I needed an outlet to consume my time. I was given the opportunity to model. I did a little bit of that and noticed I had endless ideas that would be in demand. One day I visited a fabric store and as soon as I started looking through fabrics I was over whelmed with many creative ideas. Through my modeling with different photographers and through my photo-shoots, I networked! Within 2 years, I directed and was the creative designer for a body paint calendar. I have also directed body tape photo-shoots and events in the Denver metro area. My pieces have been featured in 3 fashion shows and I plan to expand my designs just from the feedback and the responses that I have received from the fashion industry.

Festival of Colors

My strongest motivations and influencers would have to be

my children. To see them live, laugh and love is most important to me and to see them be successful and happy, as well as know “the in”, through them, is beneficial. Through networking I met J Anthony Owner and CEO of Beautiful Distractions, he has been a huge mentor and motivator for me. My dream is to continue my designs and have my pieces distributed worldwide, as well as continue making people feel good and feel beautiful. I’m grateful that I have the ability to wake up each day and be a part of design and fashion. This is an actual dream I am living. Who knows what the future holds, so cheers to new beginnings and new endeavors. I appreciate all of the love and outpouring of support from the Denver Fashion & Modeling Community. Some of my favorite quotes would be “I am my own Glam Squad!” –Denise Renee and “I dream better when I am awake.” – J Anthony.
