Lisa Byrne — Director McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery You’re new to McClelland. What is your background? What attracted you to McClelland? I am an arts educator and curator with over twenty years of experience presenting exhibitions of contemporary art and social history. I’ve worked in various public and university galleries with artists to present their ideas in different types of media. I am very passionate about the vital contribution arts experiences play in changing our daily life for the better. At McClelland this is achieved through indoor and outdoor exhibitions of art and sculpture with a strong commitment to the preservation of our parkland environment and to Indigenous culture. McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery is an extremely special place in Australia. The founding gift to the community by the McClelland Family in 1961 is significant, it made McClelland the first gift by a family to the community of land with the clear direction for a gallery and cultural hall to be built. Opening its doors in 1971, the architect-designed gallery building is well known for its modernist significance. McClelland tells the story of large public Australian modernist sculpture throughout our park. It is a unique place in so many ways. McClelland is a vital part of the Victorian art community located in the municipality of Frankston. What’s new at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery? We are very excited about our new Education Pavilion that will open in early 2019. The pavilion named for its benefactors, Sarah & Baillieu Myer is another significant gift to the local community. McClelland’s schools education program and holiday creative workshop programs have welcomed over 4000 young people and adults over recent years. These programs in the main have been and are outdoors in the sculpture park with some aspects taking place in our historical Harry McClelland Studio. With the development of the new pavilion next year we’ll be able to present more opportunities to participate in artmaking and mentoring workshops lead by high profile artists from Victoria, Australia and internationally, I’m excited by this!

Do you have a favourite sculpture in the park? For me the holistic experience of McClelland Sculpture Park via a walking trail of discovery in a bushland setting is unbeatable. The park changes so much through the seasons it is a privilege to be able to see this each day from my walks and through my office window. A favourite experience is listening to our visitors describe why they are drawn to particular sculptures and how this can change through time. What is your summer time recommendation for visitors to McClelland? Over summer McClelland will be showcasing contemporary watercolour works as part of its new initiative titled Splash. An award and highly commended opportunity for artists working in watercolour through innovative and highly proficient ways, it’s the largest and only award for watercolour-based works in Australia. We’ll be running a number of watercolour based creative workshops for people to participate in, so watch our website in the coming months for announcements. What surprises people the most when they visit McClelland? The location of the park, its significant history and its unique experience is the most common surprise, as is finding the sculptures we commission as part of the Southern Way McClelland partnership for the Peninsula Link. Tell us what exciting things McClelland has planned for the future? We have a fabulous exhibition program planned in 2019, we’re developing an artist in residence program, and have several other exciting announcements, so stay tuned!
