TIME is ticking away and no one is more aware of the dangers threatening the very existence of Frankston Football Club than stalwart Bryan Mace (centre), with the mayor, Cr James Dooley, Liberal Dunkley MP Chris Crewther, Labor Frankston MP for Frankston Paul Edbrooke, and former board member John Davis. They formed a team at the Dolphins ground on Wednesday. “Putting politics aside, we’ve joined together to urgently call on AFL Victoria to retain the VFL licence for Frankston Dolphins,” Mr Crewther said. “By working altogether, we will advocate for a positive solution to be found to keep the club going. This is important not only for the club, but for aspiring footballers across Frankston and the peninsula who aim to get to VFL or AFL level, the community and creditors, who include many local small businesses who would benefit far more by having the club continue.” Picture: Cameron McCullough
Dolphins season doomed Stephen Taylor steve@baysidenews.com.au THE door to Frankston Football Club’s long-term future may be ajar – but the club formed in 1887 will not be permitted to field a team next season. ALF Victoria said on Friday it had formally terminated the Dolphins’ playing licence for 2017, and had already told the club's administrators. However, AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said that if the club’s ongoing
viability could be proved over the next few months he was hopeful that a “solution that is both sustainable and viable can be considered going forward for a VFL presence, potentially from 2018”. This makes a meeting today (Monday 3 October) between creditors and the administrators –Paul Burness and Con Kokkinos, of Worrells Solvency and Forensic Accountants – so crucial. Mr Burness said the Dolphins fourman board had proposed an offer – or
deed of company arrangement – for creditors to consider. He said its acceptance would allow the club to continue trading and that staff, coaches and players would be paid in full. However, ordinary unsecured creditors would receive only a partial return on their debts over four years. “The creditors will effectively have two real options: vote to accept the proposal put forward by the board, or they can vote to place the club into liq-
uidation,” Mr Burness said. But he said “liquidation is unlikely to yield sufficient recoveries to allow the payment of any portion of the ordinary unsecured creditors’ claims”. Mr Burness said he believed the club could be saved. “I have put together a financial analysis that seeks more fundraising and key sponsorships and I believe the club has good prospects,” he said. “The reality is that if the club loses its licence it will be hard to complete a
successful restructure.” The Dolphins owe $1.5 million – mostly to the state government and Tabcorp over pokies’ licences – which the AFL said Friday was “far in excess of our previous understanding”. Dunkley MP Chris Crewther spoke with officials at AFL House, Docklands, Friday morning. “They [know] that Frankston is an important region for them and they do want a VFL presence here,” he said. Tough new laws yet to show in crime stats Liz Bell liz@baysidenews.com.au CRIME in Frankston and Mornington Peninsula is on the rise, with sex crimes, burglary and drug-related offences all increasing in the past 12 months. Overall crime in Frankston has risen 12.5 per cent in the last financial year, while the peninsula’s reported crime is up 9.6 per cent. In Frankston, sex offences increased
by 70 per cent to 481, burglary and break and enter was up 24.6 per cent to 1180, and drug dealing and trafficking up almost 25 per cent to 242. Of the 79 local government areas in the state, 75 had an increase in crime over the past 12 months. Frankston’s neighbouring cities of Casey and Cardinia also had a bad year, with close to 20 per cent more crime than last year. Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke said the increase was why the government had
given police new powers and more resources to crackdown on violent crime, youth offending and family violence. “There are more operations and targeted efforts to catch criminals, with police making more arrests and charging more offenders, he said. He said “operation cosmas had made more than 180 arrests for violent crime since May, including ringleaders. Mr Edbrooke said 19 PCOs were now employed at Frankston to free up
police from the desk and get them back on the beat. In response to an alarming incidence of carjacking and home invasions tough new laws have been introduced this year. Carjacking carries a maximum penalty of 15 years, while aggravated carjacking a minimum of three years and maximum of 25 years. Home invasion carries a maximum penalty of 25 years and aggravated home invasion attracts a minimum
non-parole period of three years. The number of offences across the state was 535,826, up 13.4 per cent from last year, with robbery up 14.2 per cent, theft up 19.2 per cent and public nuisance offences up 30 per cent. The worst hit areas were Hindmarsh, which had a 50.5 per cent rise in crime, and Benalla, which had 40.7 per cent more crime. Shadow police minister Edward O'Donohue said more police were needed.
Arrest over adults only ‘cannabis’ raids A 28-YEAR-OLD man charged over three robberies at a Frankston adult shop in eight days will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later this week. He will face three counts of armed robbery and one count of robbery. Police will allege the Frankston man stole about $3200 worth of synthetic cannabis in raids at the Erotic Nights store in Young St on 18, 22 and 25 September. In the first raid the man walked into the store and allegedly pointed a large knife at the shop assistant before helping himself to $2000 worth of packets of the substance and running off. In the second raid the man allegedly stole $800 of the same substance and, in the third, he grabbed $400 of the substance.
Teen arrest A FRANKSTON youth, 15, has been arrested after an alleged unprovoked attack on a man near Frankston pier, 5.45pm, Tuesday 20 September. Witnesses said the youth walked up to the man, aged 45, and asked: “What did you say to me? The man tried to avoid the confrontation but was allegedly punched to the head, falling backwards and fracturing his skull on the pavement. He was rushed to The Alfred hospital for treatment. Detective Senior Constable Dave Burgoyne, of Frankston CIU, said witnesses said they saw the youth and friends drinking in a nearby park during the afternoon. Police also gathered evidence from Frankston Council-backed CCTV street cameras. The youth was arrested the next day and charged with intentionally causing injury but the charge was later upgraded to recklessly causing serious injury. He faced a children’s court where he was remanded in custody to appear at the same court at a later date. Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call Detective Burgoyne, 9784 5555.
Portsea assault POLICE are looking for two witnesses who may have filmed an assault outside the Portsea hotel mid-year. A 23-year-old man was at the hotel, on Point Nepean Rd, 8.30pm, Sunday 12 June, when he was thrown out by security staff. Police said a fight between the victim and four security staff out front may have been filmed by the man and woman. The victim was hit in the face and knocked unconscious before falling onto the road. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police interviewed a 27-year-old Frankston man who has been released pending further inquiries. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A TRUCK lost its trailer in a crash near the intersection of Moorooduc Highway and Barriedale Grove, Baxter, last week. The trailer ended up 20 metres into the scrub on the side of Moorooduc Highway. Emergency services crews reported a strong smell of
chemicals coming from the trailer and it was deemed a Hazmat incident. Firefighters in full gas suits used instruments to measure gasses in the trailer before it could be removed – and afterwards they had to be hosed down. The highway was blocked south bound for a few hours. Picture: Gary Sissons
Police remember fallen colleagues A HIGHLIGHT of the National Police Remembrance Day service at Frankston RSL, Thursday, was the presentation of the Victoria Police Star to the son of a former officer who died after ending his shift. Acting Superintendent Simon Humphries, of Southern Metro Division 4 – which covers the Mornington Peninsula – made the presentation to Andrew Simmons, the son of Edward Simmons who was killed when his police motorbike crashed on Oliver’s Hill late on Christmas Eve, 1957.
Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation Mornington Peninsula branch president Darryl Nation said the first constable in the mobile traffic section was riding home to help wrap Christmas presents when he lost control of his police bike. Son Andrew was two and his sister Cathy, now deceased, was four at the time. The award was presented posthumously to Andrew, the former member’s son. Mr Nation said the Remembrance Day service at the RSL headquarters
was “excellent, giving police the opportunity to reflect on those who had died while on duty. A drummer and a piper from HMAS Cerberus performed at the ceremony and Frankston High School choir sang the national anthem. Since 1853 when Victoria Police was established, 159 officers have died on duty. The Blue Ribbon Foundation raises money for improved emergency facilities named in memory of fallen officers in public hospitals. Stephen Taylor

Season over before it starts
Banner day: The depth of publis sentiment for Frankston Football Club is being clearly shown by mounting support shown by individuals and groups determined to make sure the city keeps its team, despite the loss of its licence to play in 2017.
A sad day for Frankston Stephen Taylor steve@baysidenews.com.au DOLPHINS board member James Crowder said the loss of the club’s playing licence for next season was a “sad day for Frankston”. But, he said: “We are determined to get it back by proving that we are a viable concern. “We have a great facility, one of the best in the VFL, and we have got to get together to put a case that it is sustainable. “Everyone hopes that in 2018 we will be back on the field once we have proven we are a viable performer. “The AFL will assist us because they know that we are very important integrally [to the VFL].” Mr Crowder said he and the
rest of the club’s four-man board - president John Georgiou, Ash Roberts and Shane Bowland - were commited to the club’s future and that others had “come out of the woodwork” to rally when its future looked grim. “There’s been overwhelming community support for the club and we’ll be doing everything we can to get it back up and running.” Dunkley MP Chris Crewther said a steering committee of local business and community leaders “would be the next step to move forward to prove the club's viability”. “Creditors must make a positive decision on Monday, or be given more time to come to an arrangement,” he said. “The community and local leaders then need to get behind the club to prove its financial viability, to
raise funds and to set in place better governance structures in conjunction with the board, in order to meet the conditions of the VFL licence and to apply to be re-granted the licence.” He said future viability could be assured by creditors waiving or compromising on debts; restructuring and [making] significant plans to prove the club to be long-term financially viable; and through large fundraising efforts. The administrator Paul Burness said it was “curious” AFL Victoria had arranged to meet with the club’s former board on Thursday when, in reality, he became the club after it was placed in a trading halt. Adding to the confusion, the AFL said on Wednesday it had “not provided any advice to the club regarding [its] license and will meet with [it] on Thursday”.

Former captain Paul Kennedy cited the club’s fostering of AFL talent: “As for the on-field performance, in the past seven years there have been 10 former Dolphins drafted into the AFL – the most from any VFL team. And these include two grand-finalists in Matt Boyd and Tory Dickson and their coach Luke Beveridge. “The team does need to win more games, and that will happen if AFL Victoria works with the club to appoint an experienced, quality coach who can turn the on-field fortunes around,” he said. “What football in this region needs is AFL Victoria working with the Dolphins to improve the pathway for young footballers. I don’t see why they can’t do that and keep alive a Frankston institution that has been around for 129 years.”
Continued from Page 1 He said the club had been told that its VFL licence had been breached and it can’t currently meet its conditions, but that it can “come back and show cause why [it] is not in breach”. “If the creditors keep the club afloat past next Monday and the club can prove their long-term financial viability and put better governance structures in place, AFL Victoria is willing to reconsider re-granting the VFL licence,” he said. Mr Crewther met with the mayor Cr James Dooley, Cr Darrel Taylor, coach Pat Hill, former player and Frankston High School principal Ken Rowe, sponsor Michelle Graham and others at Frankston Park, Friday, to video a club-saving message. They agreed it was crucial the AFL not make a decision on the club’s playing licence until after Monday’s meeting of creditors. “Culturally, the club is vitally important to the peninsula,” Cr Dooley said. “They are the pinnacle of football here with the next equivalent club being Port Melbourne. If they were to go, it would create a huge hole in the community here.” Mr Burness confirmed he had “received overwhelming indications of support from the coaching staff, players, employees, members, supporters and sponsors”. “This included several offers of financial assistance should the club continue as a going concern,” he said. “It was also noted that the Frankston City Council had indicated a willingness to provide the club with rent relief should it continue into the future.” Former Dolphins captain Paul Kennedy said it was “understandable AFL Victoria might be concerned with the Dolphins’ performance on and off the field in recent years”. “We are an easy target because we have only won 20 games in the past eight years,” he said. “But the new function centre is generating good business and the administrator says the club has a financial future once it comes out of administration. “If AFL Victoria helps the club appoint a quality general manager who can maximise returns from the function centre then there is no doubt the Frankston Football Club will be viable.” Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke, who was behind a petition to save the club last week, said he was “shocked by the news of the termination”. “Sport is the social fabric of our society and we need to show the AFL that the Frankston community won’t stand by and let this happen,” he said. “I call on the AFL to reverse their decision and if you agree, I urge you to sign and share this petition.” By Friday it had received almost 3000 signatures – a sign that, despite the axe hanging over the club’s head – its future is in everyone’s hearts.

TO the uninitiated, model airplanes are just toys for big kids, but for Seaford man Murray Wilson tackling hectic manoeuvres when attached to a plane that’s flying at around 220kph is definitely not for the faint hearted. Wilson recently returned from the “Olympics” of model aircraft, the international control-line model aircraft competitions in Perth, where he and his South Australian-based race partner came second in their category against 35 teams from around the world. It was the first time since the start of the event – organised by the model aeronautical association – that it has been held in the Southern Hemisphere. And if you still think it’s just a bit of nonsense, a visit to any race will quickly change your mind. There are pit stops and mechanics, and the race atmosphere is abuzz with tension and excitement. The aircraft are loud and fast and competitors have to keep their wits about them as aircraft duck and weave in a tight circle with little room for error. The vehicles are attached to the controller via a wire, and precision judgement is crucial to keep the vehicle in flight and out of the way of other aircraft. Positioning and strategy are crucial. “If you do crash into someone, there’s usually not much left of the plane, so we have to know what we’re doing up there,” Wilson said. Wilson, 28, has been involved in the sport since a young child, and admits it’s probably “in the blood”. His late father Graeme, who was a racer and involved with both the Victorian and Australian model aeronautical associations, met his wife Fiona on the race field. “So it was pretty sure I’d be involved in the sport.” While there are only about 20,000 followers of the sport in Australia, it is huge in Eastern Europe, where Wilson has his teammate competed in 2012 and came third in a field that included some of the best in the sport. It’s an expensive passion, but one that is worth it for the 28-year-old. “I tend to do lot of travelling for competitions, but hopefully one day the sport’s popularity will grow here and there will be prize money to help cover the costs,” he said. Snakes spring into action THE weather’s warming up and snakes are waking up. Just as warmer, sunny days send a signal that it’s fine for outdoor recreation the same applies for snakes, who see it as time to “get some sun, look for food and a mate”, according to scientist Nick Clemann. Senior scientist from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)’s Arthur Rylah Institute Mr Clemann said people were likely to see snakes when “walking dogs, cycling, bush walking, enjoying parks and gardening”. “Snakes are more common in areas around the urban fringe or in rural areas, but they do turn up surprisingly close to cities and towns, especially around watercourses and in parkland,” he said. Snakes frequently found near the coast are tigers and lowland copperheads while in the drier areas the most common snakes were eastern browns and red-bellied blacks. “All four species are dangerously venomous, but it is rare for them to bite people,” Mr
Clemann said. “Being aware that snakes may be around and being informed about how to react to them are the most important aspects of managing snakes.” Mr Clemann’s advice to anyone seeing a snake was to “keep calm and try to move yourself, anyone with you and your pets away from the snake”. He said snakes were protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and should not be harmed, killed or captured. “Bites can occur when people try to kill snakes,” he said. “Clean up around the house and cut lawns regularly – snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, or building materials.” He recommended that first aid kits include compression bandages and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately. For more information call DELWP on 136 186 or call a licensed snake catcher. Keith Platt

This beach boy’s still making waves at 80 Keith Platt keith@baysidenews.com.au TUTANEKAI “Tui" Wordley should be an inspiration to every surfer. Not because of the size of the waves he rides or the latest overseas trip he’s made, but because, at 80, he’s still out there, catching swells that bend towards the shore, steepen up and then crash down, peeling off to the right or left. He’s at home on Western Port’s reefs and points and the beach breaks at Gunnamatta or Phillip Island with visits to the west coast, from Torquay to Lorne, when the surf is on. A New Zealander by birth with a mixed Scottish, English and Maori pedigree, Wordley came to Australia by way of Papua New Guinea about “30 odd years ago”. He was working in the PNG highlands as a motor mechanic when he met his wife Julie. She came from Heidelberg and seven years later, when it was time for them to come and settle in Australia, his one stipulation was that “it has to be close to the beach”. “We came to Langwarrin and have been here ever since,” Wordley says over the phone while working in his shed (he is also a member of the Langwarrin Men’s Shed). A group of friends gave Wordley a new Phil Trigger-shaped surfboard for his 80th birthday. The board, a bit thicker and wider than what he might have been riding over the past several decades, was designed to help Wordley keep enjoying

his time in the surf. Four inches thick and 10 foot long by 24 inches (surfers still use imperial measures) wide the board is just what he needs. Wordley likes to knee paddle and the extra buoyancy means more stability and less effort when paddling for waves. “I’ve never been into short boards, always ridden longboards,” Wordley says. “But I’ve tried them all, kneeboards, goat boats [surf skis]. Not a sup [stand-up paddle board], but I will try.” A foundation member and the first life member of the Mornington Peninsula-based Maladiction Longboarders, Wordley made and operates a lighting system that signals information about heats to competitors in the water.
Frankston Times 3 October 2016
“I’m the chief time keeper and work the lights,” he says. “I got sick of the flag system so made the revolving lights.” Although he’s the oldest Maladiction member, Wordley says “those other guys are catching up”. A handyman and mechanic, Wordley has been asked to make similar light systems for other board rider clubs and is always on the lookout for wrecked traffic lights which can be pirated for their coloured lenses. “I’ve modernised the system so we now use LEDs, which are easier to use and cheaper; they also don’t use as much battery power.” The lure of surfing first hit Wordley when he was in his early 20s while living at Whangarei, north of Auck-
land in New Zealand. “We saw some guys come to our local beach with surfboards and we’d seen newsreels. The guys making [the early surf movie] Endless Summer came to Raglan to do some filming, which included trout fishing at Rotorua ,” Wordley says. Wordley was a member of the Tatahi Surfriders Club before heading off to PNG in 1969. It was a time he sees as “my best surfing days; I came fourth in the final heat of the first New Zealand national competition”. Tui Wordley and Julie have three sons, Scott, a lecturer in aerospace engineering at Monash University, Brett a site supervisor for housing company Edgerton Homes, and Aaron who, like his dad, was bitten by the surf bug and
shapes and glasses surfboards. “He glassed boards for [multi-world champion] Kelly Slater before this year’s Bells Easter contest,” Wordley, who knows a bit about board making himself, says. Although widely known as Tui, the longer version of his first name, Tutanekai, is a character from a Maori legend. Wordley’s says his mother “had Irish, English and Maori blood” while his father was “half English, half Maori”. Further back, his great, great grandfather was “a surgeon to Victoria’s household”. And Tui, still surfing at 80, is making his own mark in history, much like that of his legendary namesake, Tutanekai.

Marathon girl’s moving target WHEN Mt Eliza student Zoe Craig decided to try to raise $500 for mental health programs by signing up for the Melbourne Half Marathon on October 26, she hadn’t planned on reaching her limit so quickly. Within a day of starting her fundraising just a few weeks ago, the 17-year-old student had exceeded her original goal and increased her target to $1000. That too was reached within days, and the amount has increased steadily to now sit at just over $1700. “My goal is now $2000 but, with a month to go, hopefully I will have to change that too,” she said. Zoe, who is in year 11 at the Peninsula School, decided to run the race to raise awareness of mental health after the experience of a close family friend.
Having also seen some of her peers struggle with the difficulties of mental illness, Zoe will donate the money she raises to Headspace, an organisation that runs programs and education for young people with mental health issues. “I think mental health, particularly in young people, is a big issue and really under-reported,” she said. Light and sound show at flick of an app Keith Platt keith@baysidenews.com.au ACTION, camera, lights and sound. The sequence might sound out of order, but it all adds up to security when applied to a new light developed by a Braeside company. Sengled The light has an inbuilt digital camera that transmits images straight to the Cloud and can be monitored by smart phone or computer. Even if the light is turned off, an infrared camera will record images in the dark. The Snap light also comes equipped with a speaker and microphone, which provides the opportunity to converse with someone knocking on the door, even if you aren't at home. David Clerk, CEO of General Innovation Australia, can quite rightly claim to have had a light bulb moment. Actually, there have been several light bulb moments that he and his team – including electrical engineer father, Fred, a former chairman of the Institute of Engineers – have come up with to extend the company’s product line. With LED lights becoming the norm (at one stage there were 5000 registered LED manufacturers in China) Clerk says his company needed “to think of something different in what was an eroding market”. Until now his company has been heavily involved in supplying and installing LEDs to business, including apartment blocks and department stores. Using the iPhone and its multiple
David Clerk and the security light that includes a camera, microphone and speaker.
purposes as an inspiration, Clerk set about having a close look at the light bulb to see what else it could do besides illuminate. As a result, Snap is the flagship of a range of lights now being marketed by Machtig brand in partnership with Chinese manufacturer Sengled for commercial and private uses. Clerk, who lives at of Mt Eliza with his wife Sascha Schubiger (the company’s operations manager) and two daughters, was a brand manager for the Holden Racing Team while studying at both Monash University and Swinburne TAFE. A talented rower and former Hai-
leybury student, he had earlier won a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport and rowed in twos, fours and eights. His experience and attraction to motor racing has led to his company having an ambassador deal with Nissan-sponsored V8 supercar driver Rick Kelly. “Nissan is all about innovation and is a progressive car company,” Clerk says when explaining the “good fit” of the two companies. “Their latest logo is Innovation that Excites and they’re all about delivering new technology into the car world.” General Innovation Australia started
in 2007, following Clerk’s decade with the Philips lighting company in Australia and Hong Kong. Clerk says security is the cornerstone of Snap. It comes equipped with a high definition camera that is sensitive to movement. In the blink of an eye movement will turn on the light and the camera, instantly storing images in the Cloud. As previously mentioned, the camera will also record images even with the light off. The light comes with an app that enables the camera to be monitored from any device. The camera can be tuned so it is
pixel-activated in three separate areas covered by its wide-angle lens, eliminating false alarms from branches or straying animals. The remote access also means that users can at any time take a look at the entire area covered by the camera. The app will send an alert to any mobile device if movement is detected and, if it’s a trades or delivery person, a two-way conversation can be had through the inbuilt microphone and speaker. Priced at $299 Snap includes free cloud membership and the storing of images for 24 hours. The images can be downloaded and used as a record or for evidence in the case of theft or break-in. Clerk says extra time can be bought to keep images for weeks on end if a property owner is going away on holidays or leaving a building unattended for long periods. The camera has face recognition and up to four can be running at the one time. Also in General Innovation’s stable is a smart lamp (Pulse) that includes 13-watt JBL Bluetooth speakers which can play sounds from any device, including an analogue turntable and amplifier, although this requires an extra converter. The dimmable LEDs can be fitted in any room in the house or workplace and their range, or distance from the router or gateway can be extended to 30 metres with Boost, which is an LED with a Wi-Fi repeater. Clerk says the LEDs are rated to last 25,000 and are likely to outlast the speakers.

‘Father’ of archaeology dies EMERITUS Professor John Mulvaney, often described as the father of Australian archaeology, died in Canberra on 21 September at the age of 90. Mulvaney's father was a primary school teacher and the family moved from Yarram to Frankston, where John was born. All of John Mulvaney's secondary schooling was undertaken at Frankston High School where he was a contemporary of historian, Valda Cole. Both were taught by history teacher, Doris McRae. After war service John Mulvaney completed
an MA with first class honours at the University of Melbourne where he developed an interest in prehistory and archaeology. He then had a distinguished academic career at the University of Melbourne, Cambridge University, and Australian National University in prehistory and was a leader of archaeological field explorations of Aboriginal sites, including Lake Mungo where the "burial culture" was progressively dated back 42,000 years. A consequence of his work was the nomination of the Willandra Lakes as a World Heritage site. Peter McCullough
‘Favours’ denied in bid to end war WHEN the women of ancient Greece stage a sex strike for peace, sparks fly and the comedy “pops-up” everywhere in Lysistrata, a bawdy anti-war comedy by the playwright Aristophanes. The play kept audiences laughing, and squirming, for 2500 years. Lysistrata is a comic account of a woman’s mission to end the Peloponnesian War. She convinces other women to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing them to negotiate a peace treaty. The play will be held 8pm, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 October, at McClelland College Performing Arts Centre, 26 Alexander Cr, Karingal (enter off Karingal Drive). Lysistrata has much to offer theatre-goers and society, director Emma Sproule said. “If the laughs can shake us hard enough, perhaps they might shake us free of the chains in which a patriarchal society binds us still.” Dionysus Theatre is a contemporary company, established on the Mornington Peninsula by Victorian Drama League award-winning director Emma Sproule. Performers include Braiden Barnard, Lauren Browne, Lachlan Casey-Roleff, Cian Cornish, Suzanna Crismani, Caitlin Duff, Maddison Fleming, Pearce Hessling, Victoria
Hill, Joshua Quinn, Madeline Rintoul, Michelle Robertson, Gretel Sharp, Anthony Staunton, Alarna Summers, Gemma Sylvester-Keech, Melanie Thomas, Jett Thomas, Zachary Thomas and Jakob Wilson. Tickets are $30 or $25 concession. Groups of eight or more are discounted. There’s cabaretstyle seating, BYO nibbles and drinks at bar prices. The production contains course language, sexual references and imagery and partial nudity and is not suitable for under 15 year olds. Bookings: tickethost.com.au Event=1083

Too troublesome and expensive for rail trench Like most residents who live or have lived between Mordialloc and Frankston, I am aware that the railway line between these two suburbs is built on a sandbar that is higher than the ground level of the adjacent buildings. The area between Mordialloc and Frankston is both a drained former swamp with a high water table and is also part of an existing floodplain and is about one metre above the mean sea level. Very few adjacent buildings in this area have a view over the existing railway line. As the local councils, Kingston mayor Tamsin Bearsley, Frankston mayor James Dooley and the MP David Davies are well aware, this area is also at risk to flooding in the event of a king tide at high tide or if there is a rise in sea levels. The proposition that this stretch of railway can be lowered below sea level in a trench, which in effect is a large swimming pool without water, is not a feasible proposition, especially if one considers the huge amount of water that would need to be pumped out after a heavy rainfall, which would be additional to ongoing seepage. At Bentleigh there are two new large pumps continuously pumping out seepage and rainfall. The size and number of pumps required to keep an open trench from Mordialloc to Frankston dry would be considerable and in practice may not be viable. The other consideration is that the taxpayers of Victoria generally expect an elected government, irrespective of its political makeup, will endeavour to deliver any project at an affordable cost and that is value for money. Between Mordialloc and Frankston an elevated railway line will do that whereas an open trench will not. Philip Miller, Mornington
Refugee bias The recent refugee summit in New York saw the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull advocating
Australia’s treatment of refugees as the ideal to follow. He delivered his speech in a swagger bursting with pride at such a successful outcome. While refugees sink into despair on [Nauru and Manus] islands and women and children are exploited, our prime minister uses their predicament to grandstand. How disappointing. For someone who showed the promise of a better approach to solving problems he falls short. His quote that “this is what 48 per cent of Australians want“ is not true. Using data from biased polls ignores the thousands of signatures collected by the joint advocates for the refugees. Bring Them Here collected these signatures in every state. They were gathered in suburbs and towns that never encounter the pollsters. What a shame to have our PM advising countries to treat those seeking refuge to follow such a cruel policy. Patricia Rayner, Somers
Gambling concerns The current Moorabbin reserve redevelopment project comprising new facilities for the St Kilda football team and Southern Metropolitan Junior Football League was gifted considerable taxpayer funds by Kingston Council. In addition to training facilities for senior and junior teams commercial activities will include 83 electronic gaming machines (EGMs). Kingston Council adopted the Gambling Policy Action Plan 2014-2019 in 2015 and claims to be concerned about the high density of EGMs in Kingston and their impact on the community. According to the gambling policy a complete social and economic impact assessment will be undertaken to determine what harm may result when poker machines are installed in a new venue where activities are focused on young people. This could be the case when junior teams are using facilities in close proximity to EGMs in St
Kilda’s refurbished Moorabbin premises. To counteract problems caused by addiction to poker machines the impact assessment would also check the degree to which the community has choices of alternative recreational or entertainment facilities in the local area. One of the entertainment alternatives is Mordialloc’s heritage listed Masonic Hall in Albert St. Unfortunately, council moved that the $400,000 set aside to complete renovations of the building be diverted for use on sports grounds. The Masonic hall is now out for expressions of interest despite the public’s clearly expressed preference for this building to be retained for community use. Mary Rimington, Mordialloc
Fears held for hall The future of the 1925 former Masonic hall in Albert St, Mordialloc, is in doubt again. Kingston Council was on track to restore this heritage listed hall for community use as a youth/arts/ performance centre, to much acclaim. But in July council voted to divert a restoration fund and get community groups to lease it and pay for restoration (expressions of Interest are open until 15 September). Given huge community interest in this heritage hall, candidates for the coming Kingston Council election would do well to consider their position on its future. Ask Council candidates if they would support: Reinstating the promised restoration of the hall (abandoned by council); The excellent officer recommendation for council and community use as a centre for youth, arts and performance space (rejected by council); Future joint community/council use rather than commercial lease, sale or demolition. European settlement began in Mordialloc in the 1840s (soon after Melbourne was founded in 1835) and by the 1880s many grand buildings existed, yet few historic buildings remain. A unique chance is in the hands of incoming councillors to secure the future of this heritage building and return it to community use. Nina Earl, Mordialloc

OUR feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most of our daily activities, so its no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. But what can you do about it? We asked the experts at Foot & Leg Pain Clinics to shed some light on common foot and leg concerns: The most common concerns include: knee pain, injuries and arthritis; heel, shin or forefoot pain; ankle and achilles concerns. Many conditions are misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so its important to find an experienced musculoskeletal or sports podiatrist to assist. Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to postural aches / pains and undue stress on joints and tissues. Early symptoms for diabetes, arthritis, nerve and circulatory problems often show themselves initially in the feet. Traditional treatments such as cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies are now outdated for conditions such as joint arthritis, and have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases. Biological medicine is now superseding the pharmaceutical approach, providing us with natural, safe and effective medical alternatives and treatments. Natural regenerative therapies
such as Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma) are helping many to heal injuries and assist degeneration. Foot and leg problems left untreated usually get worse, however most foot & leg concerns can be addressed relatively easily and effectively with appropriate treatment. “By combining the latest regenerative therapies with a sound knowledge of musculoskeletal medicine, biomechanics, and load management strategies to assist stresses through joints and tissues, we can aid or eradicate pain, increase mobility, repair injury and regenerate tissues to assist arthritic concerns – naturally,” say the experts at Foot & Leg Pain Clinics. If you need assistance with foot or leg pain, Foot & Leg Pain Clinics have convenient clinic locations across Victoria including Mt. Eliza, Rosebud, Berwick and Moorabbin. STONEFIELD HIT THE GRAND Australia’s favourite psych rock sisters Stonefield are hitting the road on a massive national headline tour that will stop in at The Grand Hotel, Mornington on 27 October. Coinciding with their massive tour, the band have released a new single, ‘Love’. In contrast to most of the record, where the writing process began with the vocal as the guiding light, ‘Love’ was written with quite a different approach, taking shape from a stripped back jam between lead guitarist Hannah, Sarah (keys) and Holly (bass). The sisters were rocking out in their lounge room in country Victoria, and brought to life an intricate and intoxicating musical bed, to which vocalist Amy then added a jangly, day dream inducing top line. The instrumental focus is evident in the finished track, and shows yet more diversity from an already dynamic young band. The follow-up to 2013’s self-titled debut, As Above, So Below, reaffirms the position of the four-piece in the upper echelons of Australian psych-rock royalty. The record is a musical coming-of-age of sorts, the sprawling soundscapes and lyrical depth of As Above, So Below showcases the group’s progressing musical maturity. The 10-track juggernaut delicately and boldly displays the Findlays’ signature penchants for kaleidoscopic guitar riffs, swirling melodies and hallucinogenic vocals. Stonefield are renowned for their mind blowing, energetic, engaging live shows, and have spent the last six months traversing the globe and performing on some of the

world’s biggest stages, wowing fans on a string of headline US shows, including a jaunt at Austin’s SXSW festival.
high energy set travels between punk-pop hooks and unpredictable live jams, keeping both the girls and the audience on their toes.
Joining them on the road are all-girl powerhouse RACKETT, whose debut single BATS was released in July. Making loud and experimental pop rock, the fourpiece provide fans with an adventurous live show. Their
Rounding off this epic line-up are White Bleaches, the four-piece garage psych band formed in 2015 in Torquay. Since relocating to Melbourne theys have played with the likes of Twin Peaks, Green

Buzzard, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, to name a few. “It’s been way too long since we have been on the road for a big tour, so we’re really excited to get back out there to share our new music with Australia. Rackett and White Bleaches are both rad bands, so it’s going to be a really fun tour!” said Amy Findlay.
If their track record for smashing their sold out live sets is anything to go by, these shows are not to be missed! Stonefield will be playing at The Grand Hotel, Mornington, on 27 October. (18+). Tickets at http:// grand.oztix.com.au or www.grand. net.au

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Spring show and jumble fair fun Compiled by Melissa Walsh THE Somerville Branch of the Red Cross Society intend holding their Spring Show and Jumble Fair on Friday and Saturday, November 10th and 11th. *** A FLOWER Day Concert and Sale of Gifts will be held in the Presbyterian Church, Mornington Junction, on Wednesday next, in aid of the State School War Relief Fund. *** MESSRS Alex Scott and Co will hold a special Horse Sale at the Tanti Yards, Mornington, on Wednesday next, when they will offer 60 horses and ponies. The sale will commence at halfpast 12 o’clock. *** THE monthly meeting of the Somerville Fruitgrower’s Association will be held on Monday evening next, in the Mechanics’ Institute, when the report of the recent conference and other business will be dealt with. *** A DANCE will be held in the Frankston Mechanics’ Hall this (Saturday) evening, in connection with the Peninsula Queens’ Carnival. Good music will be provided, and dainty refreshments will be handed round. *** A CONTINGENT of returned sick and wounded soldiers will be entertained at Somerville on Saturday, 14th inst, by the local members of the Red Cross Society. The Langwarrin Brass Band will be present and play selections during the afternoon. All friends are
requested to assist with refreshments, etc. *** THE “Wattle Club” dance, given in aid of the Frankston branch of Red Cross, was held on Saturday evening last and was a great success. The hall was crowded and things went with a good swing from start to finish. A very satisfactory sum was raised for the society. The hot water kettle, presented by Mrs Hay was won by Miss Gregory. *** THE Frankston “ Wattles” Club will hold a Plain and Fancy Dress Ball on Wednesday evening, the 18th October, in order to augment the funds of tile local Roll of Honor. This club has gained the name for their functions being most enjoyable, and it goes without saying that the forthcoming ball will be in no way behind any of its predecessors and those who attend are assured of a most pleasant evening’s amusement. *** A MEETING of the contributors to the Presentation Fund to Frankston volunteers to arrange a sixth and final presentation. was held at the Mechanics’ Institute on Wednesday Oct 4th. Mr C. P, Watson was voted to the chair. The weather was very inclement and the attendance small. It was resolved on the motion of Dr Plowman and Mr Dalman that the meeting adjourn to a date to be fixed, that date to be subsequent to the taking of the referendum vote. *** ON Tuesday the enrolment of men called up-all single men and child-less widowers 21 years of age and under 35
was proceeded with throughout Victoria, and although the response of the first groups dealt with was satisfactory, the number of men actually obtained for training was not high. As anticipated, the proportion of “rejects” was heavy, and the number of claims for exemption was also large. The following are the details of the enrolment at Frankston:—Number examined, 176 ; Fit, 89 ; Unfit, 72; Doubtful, 15; Applications for Exemption, 47. The total enrolment for three days are 15,755, of which only 40 per cent have been passed as fit. *** AT a large meeting of the ladies of St. Paul’s Church, held some time ago at the Vicarage, it was decided to hold an “Australia, Tea” in the Church Grounds on Wednesday, October the 11th, 1916, commencing at 3 p m., and remaining open during the afternoon and evening. The vicar explained to the meeting that the vestry needed about £30 for the current account and that a sum of £300 was still owing on the Vicarage. The object of the “Tea” is to raise the funds required for present needs. Invitations have been sent out to the people of the Parish and to friends asking them to be present at the “Tea” and to bring a gift and purchase one. Afternoon Tea and other refreshments will be available during the afternoon and evening. There will be vocal and instrumental music, a may-pole, shooting gallery, sweet stall and general stall and many other items of interest and attraction.
It is hoped that there will be a large gathering on the occasion and that the promoters will be rewarded with great success. The Tea is to be opened by Mrs C. G. V. Williams. At the meeting referred to above it was also decided to hold a bazaar at the end of January next to pay off the debt, on the Vicarage. The last bazaar for this object was held in 1903 so it was thought that something ought be done now. *** IN response to a request made by The Hon. W. A. Watt M.H.R. and the Hon. W. Plain M.L A., acting as joint secretaries of the Victorian division of the National Referendum Council, a meeting of the Shire Council was held at the Council Chambers, Somerville, on Thursday, 28th September, to concert measures to promote the object in view. After full discussion it was decided that public meetings be held at the three main centres of the shire, on the following dates :—Hastings, Thursday October 5th Frankston Monday October 9th; Somerville, Thursday October 12th. It was further decided to ask the National Council to send speakers to each meeting, both sides of political thought to be represented if possible, and that Dr Plowman be empowered to personally interview Sir W. H. Irvine to endeavour to induce him to attend and address one or more of the meetings. It was also decided to form a strong local committee after each meeting to promote the success of the movement. A letter was read at the meeting
from Mr A W. Taylor proprietor of the Frankston motor garage, offering to the committee the entire use of a motor car for half a day once a week, until the Referendum vote had been taken. The offer was gratefully accepted and the secretary was instructed to send Mr Taylor a letter of thanks. *** THE date of the Referendum meeting at Frankston has been, owing to unavoidable causes, altered from Tuesday Oct 10th to Monday Oct 9th at 8 p.m. Particulars will be seen in the special advertisement column. The referendum is being actively persecuted throughout the Shire. At Hastings a meeting was held on Oct 6th when Mr G. C. Rigby and the Reverend Wyndham Heathcote, were announced to address the meeting. A report of the proceedings has not yet reached us. On Monday Oct 9th there will be a public meeting at Frankston at 8 p.m. Mr Hugh Menzies and another speaker sent by the National Referendum Council will deliver addresses. It was hoped that Sir William Irvine could have been secured as a speaker, and Dr Plowman interviewed him for that purpose, but on reference to the National Referendum Council it was found that it had already been arranged that he should speak elsewhere on the evenings selected for the various shire meetings. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 7 October, 1916

Final fling: Peninsula Old Boys walked away with the silverware last year after beating Crib Point in the MPCA Provincial final. Picture: Andrew Hurst
POB hard to slow down By IT Gully REIGNING MPCA Provincial premiers Peninsula Old Boys will be hard to stop again as we gear up for the opening one-dayer round of the season on October 8. Despite clubs circling the Old Boys’ list in the off-season, they have managed to keep the team together, including the talented Will Crowder, who is keen on batting higher this season. Matty Heiden again takes charge while the likes of Dylan O’Malley and Wade Pelzer, both run machines last season, will be features again. Last year’s runner up, Crib Point, have lost Rob Hearn, but gained some handy types in Spencer Wilton from Frankston, Tyler Wilson from Balnarring and Jacob Burridge from Adelaide. After finishing the home and away season a game clear on top last season, the Pies will be looking to go one better. Somerville finished third last season and will be strengthened by the return of Andrew West and Aaron Kaddatz, while Jarrod and Cameron Bailey

arrive from Moorooduc. Baxter has gone hard in the offseason in the hope of improving on its semi-final appearance last season. Justin Bridgeman (Long Island) arrives and Jedd Sutton returns – they’ve lost no-one. Sorrento has lost AJ King to Tootgarook and Anthony Blackwell has retired. Nick Jewell is non-playing coach. He might be needed at some stage. Langwarrin finished a game outside the four. David Ross has returned and Matt Campbell arrives from Mordialloc. Long Island has lost Bridgeman and Scott Phillips to Narre Warren but have picked up Stuart Swift from Carrum Downs, Cal Savio from Ballam Park and Lachy Scott from Dandenong. At Moorooduc, Carey Sawosz from Hastings is a good inclusion while Shanith Kannangara is also back. Nathan Hangan from Darwin comes with big wraps. There’s been quite a few leave the Ducs though, including Leigh Lambert and Sushant Gupta. Mornington will be bolstered with the off-field assistance from Darren

Berry. Adrian and Josh Dale return and Lambert from Moorooduc has made the switch. The Dogs were poor last season and are sure to respond. Victorian Country quick Shaun Knott is a big in at Mt Eliza. Justin Grant will lead the charge in what the Mounties expect will be a big year. New kids on the block Pearcedale go into the season with pretty much their District Premiership side, minus Shane Maggs. Pines gain Damien Lawrence from Seaford but lose Ricky Ramsdale to Delacombe Park. Craig Entwistle takes charge. In District ranks, reigning Sub District champions Rosebud have appointed the talented Billy Quigley as captain, while Brad Glenn has retired. The Buds take on Mt Martha in the opening round who will be looking at big years from Aidan Pateman and Rhys Whittling, while Red Hill’s Riley Shaw is a good inclusion. Red Hill wobbled into last year’s finals and ex Zimbabwe U19 Carl Robinson should add something to the mix. Robinson is a tall leggie and middle order bat. The Hillmen take-on Boneo in the opening round,
who will be bolstered by the return of Stuey Peck and Chris Jobling. Baden Powell, who looked odds-on at stages last season, have lost Tom Wood, which is a huge loss. Flinders have lost Grayson and Parrott but have picked-up Waide Symes. Main Ridge have secured Carrum’s Shaun Foster and Sam Lyons from Queensland. Matty Meagher has returned to Heatherhill, Ricky Ramsdale takes the helm at Delacombe Park and Justin Parkes arrives at Seaford Tigers. In Sub District, Nick Tarrant has returned for Tyabb, who finished well out of contention last season. Frankston YCW will be looking to go one better after losing the grand final to Rosebud. Bart Hudgson heads to the Stonecats from Pines while they have retained the large majority of their list. Hastings has picked up Rob Hearn as coach but have lost Sawosz and Timmy Birch. At Dromana Kieran Voekl is back from Frankston as coach and Jack Fowler is skipper. Andrew Siverella also comes with wraps. Darren Kerr has retired while Kaddatz and West
have returned to Somerville. At Ballam Park, Stuart Plunkett is skipper, a relegated Carrum has lost Lachy Dobson and Foster and Carrum Downs has lost Stuart Swift to Long Island. Tootgarook, who finished sixth last season, a game out of third place, have picked-up AJ King from Sorrento and Andrew Libby, a part-time bowler and middle order bat, previously from Rye. Fixtures - Round 1 – October 8 (One-day game) Provincial: Baxter v Mt Eliza, Sorrento v Mornington, Moorooduc v Pines, Long Island v POB, Crib Point v Pearcedale, Somerville v Langwarrin District: Boneo v Red Hill, Rosebud v Mt Martha, Delacombe Park v Main Ridge, Seaford Tigers v Rye, Seaford v Flinders, Heatherhill v Baden Powell. Sub-District: Tootgarook v Carrum Down, Ballam Park v Hastings, Carrum v YCW, Dromana v Skye, Balnarring v Tyabb.

Gearing up for cricket By IT Gully WHILE the focus has been squarely on footy for the past six months, the whites have been dusted off and some serious indoor sessions have been going on in preparation for the 2016-17 Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association season. The big news during the offseason has been in regard to the proposed four division competition for season 2017-18. The MPCA received responses from all 35 playing member clubs and the Umpires Association and the result of the responses was an overwhelming result in favor of the proposal. There were 31 members in favor (86%) and five members against (14%) the proposed four-division competition for the 2017-18. It is expected that there will be three competitions of eight teams and one of 10. Female Cricket In other off-season news, the MPCA announced the inaugural Girls Cricket competition for this season. There are 17 clubs who have committed to entering a team for the season – clubs are also encouraged to join at any stage during the season. Here’s what the competition
looks like. When: Tuesdays from 5-7pm Who: Eight players per side When: Home & Away fixture will be announced soon Ages: 10-13 years and 14-18 years OR a two tier ability-based system OR a two tier abilitybased system in both age groupsdepending on numbers. Start date: October 25. The MPCA is not charging a registration fee for a girls’ team in the first year. RPP Cricket Show MPCA legend Neil Williams will saddle up for his 15th season as host of the RPP (98.7FM) Cricket Show this season. The crew have done a couple of warm up shows but will be live from Coles Hastings on October 8 for the first official show of the season. The 2016-17 line-up will feature some familiar faces, including the evergreen superstar Jason Nagel, Main Ridge’s Jason Albress and Crib Point’s Ricky Thompson. This week, a special launch show will be held on Friday, October 7 from 6-8pm. It will return to 9-10am on Saturday mornings on your community radio station from October 15!
Calling it the way they see it: Neil Williams (right) will be back at the helm of the RPPFM Cricket Show, kicking off on October 15. Picture: RPPFM
