Liberals declare victory Neil Walker neil@baysidenews.com.au A MARATHON eight-week election campaign has led to the narrowest of margins in the seat of Dunkley despite the Liberal Party declaring victory on election night.

Liberal candidate for Dunkley Chris Crewther was jubilant on Saturday evening when addressing sup-

porters at an election function at the Frankston Dolphins Junior Football Club.

He said “a team effort” had got him over the line, after the departure of retiring Liberal MP Bruce Billson, against a challenge from Labor candidate Peta Murphy.

Mr Crewther’s confidence in declaring a win seemed well-placed at the time with election night pundits on TV calling the seat as a Liberal hold

before he addressed the assembled party supporters.

Mr Billson held the seat by a 5.6 per cent margin at the 2013 federal election but by Sunday morning the overnight margin of a 4.4 per cent swing in Dunkley to Labor had swung out to 5.2 per cent with 74 per cent of votes counted by the Australian Electoral Commission.

ficially call and may be subject to a recount.

The AEC spent Sunday counting votes from its mobile teams and will begin tallying up absent, interstate, postal and other declaration votes on Monday.

It could take weeks before a final result is known in some seats, including Dunkley, around the nation.

Postal votes can be received and counted by the AEC for up to 13 days

after the election but must have been posted before the election day voting deadline.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull faces the prospects of a hung parliament but said on Sunday he is “quietly confident” the Coalition will gain the 76 seats needed to win government after vote counts are finalised in Dunkley and 12 other electorates.

Conduct panel report released Neil Walker neil@baysidenews.com.au THE findings of a Municipal Association of Victoria facilitated councillor conduct panel hearing into the conduct of two Frankston councillors at a property development campaign launch have been partially released by Frankston Council.

Councillors at last week’s council meeting voted to make the panel report findings public but some names are redacted in the version available to read on Frankston Council’s website.

As first reported in The Times (‘Councillor breached code’, 20/6/16) the panel found an “angry” Cr Colin Hampton breached Local Government Act conduct clauses by acting in an “inappropriate” way when speaking to two council staff members at a function at The Deck bar in Frankston in November last year.

The two-man panel, barrister Peter Harris and MAV governance member Matt Evans, found deputy mayor Cr Hampton’s “conduct, involving pointing of a finger and demanding an answer, was objectively threatening behaviour, in light of how it appeared to bystanders.”

The panel noted two council staff members approached by Cr Hampton at The Deck bar were “afraid” and in shock when he aggressively demanded to know who had “allowed” Cr Taylor to take to the stage and speak at the function.

Several witnesses confirmed in written statements that Cr Hampton was “really annoyed”, “angry” and “quite cross” and seemed to have “snapped” when demanding answers about who gave permission for Cr Taylor to speak, after mayor Cr James Dooley had addressed the crowd, at the official launch of the $80 million Allure Bayside apartments project to be built in Davey St. Cr Hampton must now formally

apologise to the two male council employees he confronted at the function.

“If the words ‘did you know he was going to speak?’ in any way upset them or caused them to be fearful I deeply regret it because it wasn’t meant that way,” he told The Times.

“It was done as an aside just to find out if they knew.

“I’ve had 15 years working with council staff and I’ve never ever had this happen so if they’ve taken it the wrong way then that’s unfortunate and I apologise for it.”

Cr Hampton said he had written to the council staff members concerned and had apologised before the panel hearing and the panel has ordered he must do so again within a fortnight.

At one point Cr Hampton said “piss off you cheeky bastard” and “piss off” several times to Cr Taylor after his fellow councillor had left the stage on the night but the panel decided such “enthusiastic conduct”, in the panel’s words, did not merit censure.

Cr Hampton “perceived Cr Taylor to be intruding in his personal space” according to the panel report.

Cr Taylor had approached Cr Hampton, Cr Dooley and council CEO Dennis Hovenden to ask “what the problem was” when he noted Cr Hampton was visibly unhappy.

The panel determined that Cr Taylor has a right to speak at public events but said he should notify the mayor and CEO in future “to ensure that his speech … does not conflict with a position or policy of council.”

Cr Taylor assumed the mayor knew he would speak on the night since his name was listed in an event running sheet.

Cr Dooley and Mr Hovenden said they had not seen the running sheet before Cr Taylor made his speech.

The panel found Cr Taylor’s “evidence was exaggerated” over allegations Cr Hampton was thrown out of the Deck bar by security staff and questioned Cr Taylor’s involvement in a letter of complaint submitted to council on behalf of developer Peninsula Project Group.

“I find it incredible that a councillor and deputy mayor can shout profanities across a room to another councillor and not be found to be in breach,” Cr Taylor said when contacted by The Times.

“And as for my evidence, I stand by every one of my statements that I submitted.”

Train station revamp set to begin WORK has begun on the rejuvenation of Young St as the first stage of the $63 million Frankston Station Precinct Upgrade.

The Young St works will deliver a new bus interchange with better seating and shelters, and three waiting bays will be built along Dandenong Rd West to give buses a place to park before they start service.

Labor Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan visited Frankston last Thursday (30 June) to help turn the sod on the major project.

“Frankston station has been neglected for too long. It’s the heart of our growing community and a gateway to the peninsula – it’s time to make it a place we can be proud of,” Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke said.

“We’re transforming Frankston into a safe, modern hub for transport, TAFE and shopping – and work starts next week,” Ms Allan said.

“The Young St works include a new bus interchange, better pedestrian access, and beautiful new trees and landscaping. It will make this busy area easier to get to and a more pleasant place to be.”

Two roundabouts will be removed and a new one will be built further north, to reduce traffic congestion along Young St. Wider footpaths, new trees and better landscaping will also be delivered as part of a $13 million project to revamp Young St to be completed by April next year.

Charges over CFA donation tin theft POLICE have charged a man following the theft a CFA donation box from a Baxter service station last month. CCTV cameras show him at the BP Peninsula Link service station walking off with the customised donation box containing $400, around 4.25am, Sunday 15 May. A 40-year-old Mornington man has been charged with theft, prohibited person possess firearm, burglary, fail to answer bail, traffic-related offences, intentionally cause injury and other assault-related offences.

He has been remanded to appear at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 14 July.

The theft has prompted Baxter CFA volunteers to collect donations more frequently to minimise future losses.

Ice driver gets 11 years over deaths THE ice-affected driver who killed two elderly women in a mini-bus crash in Rosebud, in August, has been jailed for 11 years with a minimum of seven and a half years.

Michael Patrick Trueman, of Coburg, pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court last week to two counts of culpable driving causing death.

Judge Paul Lacava was told the 24-year-old L-plate driver had the highest levels of speed and ice in his system that Victorian experts have ever seen.

His Commodore crashed headon into the Ti Tree Lodge mini bus, killing Betty May Fox, 91, and Katharina Nensteil, 88, and seriously injuring another passenger.

Seven residents aged 71-94 were in the bus in Eastbourne Rd on an outing to the beach.

Libs look likely, Labor still has hope Continued from Page 1 The Coalition government went into the election holding 89 seats and is now struggling to reach the 76 needed to form outright government without the need to negotiate with independent MPs to form a minority government.

ABC’s elections numbers cruncher Antony Green predicted the Liberals will win several of the 13 seats still in doubt but may not pick up the nine needed for outright government.

Labor cannot form government on its own but could ultimately do a deal with The Greens and some independent MPs to form a minority government and install opposi-

tion leader Bill Shorten as Prime Minister.

On election night Mr Green said “absentee votes” yet to be counted in the southern end of Dunkley could tip the odds in the Liberals’ favour.

Mornington and Mt Eliza have traditionally backed Liberal candidates while other areas such as Frankston tend to lean towards Labor in Dunkley.

In neighbouring Isaacs a 1.9 per cent swing to Labor MP Mark Dreyfus saw him re-elected for a fourth time and see off the challenge of Liberal hopeful Garry Spencer who had hoped to overturn the incumbent’s 3.9 per cent margin heading in to the 2 July poll.

Hunt safe, but support drops GREG Hunt has been re-elected to the federal seat of Flinders, although his majority has been pared back to single figures.

On the latest available figures Mr Hunt holds his seat with a majority of just over seven per cent. He won the previous election with an 11.8 per cent margin.

When counting ended on Saturday night Mr Hunt was in the lead with a comfortable 56.9 per cent of the 78.6 per cent of votes counted.

On preferences there was a 4.9 per cent swing to Labor’s Carolyn Gleixner, but Mr Hunt’s lead remains one of which many of his colleagues can only dream about.

However, the combined efforts of Ms Gleixner, Willisa Hogarth (The Greens) and Ben Wild (Animal Justice

Party) have succeeded in paring back Mr Hunt’s safe lead to single figures.

But there is no way Flinders can be regarded a marginal as a result.

The seat has been held almost continuously by the Liberal since 1972, with just one small blip, in 1983 when it briefly went to Labor’s Bob Chynoweth who defeated Liberal Peter Reith.

On Sunday Mr Hunt said he was honoured to have been re-elected and now saw the government’s “task” as being to “deliver on our commitments and to fight for other inmportant projects in the electorate, such as development of the Rosebud hospital”.

Mr Hunt was also “pleased to see Chris Crewther as the [Liberal] member for Dunkley”.

Mr Hunt, 50, has held the seat since

2001. As Environment Minister he became a high profile member of first the Abbott Coalition government and then that led by Malcolm Turnbull.

However, his portfolio attracted a lot of attention, especially when it came to port developments likely to detrimentally affect the health of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef and his approval of the multi-billion dollar Adani coal mine, also in Queensland.

Over the past few years Mr Hunt’s office was often the focus of demonstrations, mainly criticising the government’s environmental and asylum refugee policies.

Luckily, most of the protests did not deal directly with issues or involve voters within the Flinders electorate.

A fact reflected in Saturday’s poll.

THE father-in-law of outgoing Dunkley Liberal MP Bruce Billson had complaints to the Australian Electoral Commission about alleged “misleading” union and Labor Party flyers handed out at polling booths dismissed by the independent electoral regulator.

Arthur Ranken, the father of Mr Billson’s wife Kate, wrote to the AEC on 22 June demanding “election material” including posters and flyers urging voters to “put the Liberals last” and “vote to save Medicare” be immediately removed from Dunkley polling booths ahead of the weekend 2 July federal election.

Mr Ranken did not disclose his Liberal Party membership or former official party office bearing roles when complaining to the AEC about unions engaging in “misleading conduct”.

When asked by The Times Mr Ranken confirmed he is a long-time Liberal Party member who has held “several” official party roles during the past few decades.

“I certainly said [to the AEC] I’m a voter in Dunkley, but where I’m coming from [on this] is on my own. I’ve got my own views,” he said.

Mr Ranken penned a similar complaint about “false and frightening information” at polling booths in six marginal seats during the 2014 state election in a submission to the Victorian Electoral Commission’s post-election inquiry into electoral matters last year.

In that submission, in July last year, Mr Ranken described himself as “a layperson” who “would be happy to discuss any aspects of my layman’s experiences at elections in greater detail if this would be of assistance”.

In his most recent letter to the AEC late last month Mr Ranken said slogans such as ‘Vote to Save Medicare’ “create worry, uncertainty and fear”.

“Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been extremely clear in stating many times that Medicare under his leadership of the party will not be dismantled or changed,” Mr Ranken wrote.

AEC chief legal officer Paul Pirani responded to Mr Ranken by email on 23 June to state “the AEC does not agree with your view that the material attached

to your letter discloses any breach of the requirements of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Electoral Act)”.

Mr Pirani advised Mr Ranken, citing previous court rulings, that the AEC cannot “regulate the content of electoral advertising but rather only ensure that electors are clearly informed of the source of that advertising” and ensure voters are not being misled to register an invalid vote that will not be counted.

The AEC legal expert said in his email: “In the present instance, the electoral advertisements and HTV [how to vote] cards you have referred merely go towards the formation of the political judgment about how an elector will cast their vote rather than leading an elector to cast an informal vote.

“The AEC does not accept your characterisation of the ‘put the Liberals last’ message. Casting a vote which results in a candidate being put last (e.g. the last preference) does not result in an informal vote.”

Mr Ranken told The Times he maintains material distributed by unions such as Victorian Trades Hall and the ACTU at polling booths is misleading.

“The whole thing is a shocking mischief and as far as I’m concerned a disgusting lie to create major upset and confusion among the people,” he said.

Mr Ranken says the union movement made it clear online that it would replicate “their success” at this year’s federal election after its 2014 Victorian election campaign.

“We had clear warning that this style of trouble was going to happen.

“I see this as an attack on our democracy because it’s confusing people’s minds.

“People are being lied to and the electoral commission should be running the election properly, but they’re not doing it.”

Dunkley is a marginal seat with Labor hopeful Peta Murphy looking to win the seat for her party against Liberal candidate for Dunkley Chris Crewther.

A swing to Labor in the weekend vote means the seat is too close to call.

Mr Billson retired from politics after more than 20 years representing the Liberal Party and held the seat with a 5.6 per cent margin at the 2013 federal election.

Nets offer no protection for wildlife Liz Bell liz@baysidenews.com.au GARDENERS using nets to protect fruit trees are unwittingly causing the painful and illegal deaths of wildlife every year, says a Mornington Peninsula wildlife carer.

Michelle Thomas, from Animalia Wildlife Shelter in Frankston, says sugar gliders, possums, flying foxes and birds are often cruelly trapped in nylon netting and cannot chew or fight their way out. Instead they face an agonising and slow death as they struggle, often breaking limbs and suffering stress and exposure in the sun.

Ms Thomas, a registered wildlife carer, cares for up to 3000 animals annually, from as far as Brighton to Portsea.

She wants people to consider more eco-friendly ways of protecting fruit trees, such as using commercially available wildlife-friendly netting, or creating buffer zones between the tree and animals, with a simple frame that can be dismantled after fruiting.

“If the netting is draped straight over the tree, anything landing on it will get caught,” she said. “If you create a buffer zone by a frame you can protect your fruit and protect the wildlife.”

Ms Thomas said sugar gliders, kookaburras and even blue-tongue lizards are often attracted to the insects on the blossoms, not the fruit, but are still caught in the netting.

“Many people forget the relationship between animals and nature, and some animals are actually pollinators,” she said.

Bat trap: Protective nets can be a death trap for bats and birds and wildlife authorities recommend building a netted frame as a protective buffer for fruit trees.

Under the Wildlife Act, it is illegal to harm or kill wildlife.

The Department of Environment and Primary Industries' Animal Welfare Advisory Committee recommends alternatives to drape netting of trees, such as using shade cloth, which is effective but kinder to wildlife.

A department fact sheet states that up to one third of animals entangled

either die from strangulation, blood loss, shock, or dehydration, or require euthanasia due to injuries sustained while entangled.

“Members of the community have a responsibility to ensure that their behaviour reduces the likelihood of harm and injury to animals, and netting installed over domestic ‘backyard’ fruit trees should be installed in

a way that is ‘wildlife-safe’,” it states.

It is illegal to harm wildlife under Victoria law.

Amy Hidge, from animal rescue and support network,Wildlife Victoria, said there had been a 200 per cent increase in reports to their emergency response service over the past 12 months.

She said loose netting was effec-

tively a death trap to wildlife, but that there were many wildlife friendly alternatives available at nurseries and hardware stores, such as Hail Guard, Veg Net, Fruit Save Net or plain Shade Cloth.

Ms Hidge said fruit bats were particularly important for pollination, with a single flying fox being able to disperse 60,000 seeds in a night.

Images honour a sister’s death Liz Bell liz@baysidenews.com.au JAN Dance is determined to turn the tragic death of her sister from motor neurone disease into a story of faith and hope.

Her sister Sue Whyte died in 2011, four years after being diagnosed with the illness.

Jan says the diagnosis, when Sue was 54, was hard to accept, as her sister was a “beautiful soul” who was adored by many.

“I was her younger sister and I can say we never ever had an argument, she was just a beautiful person and was always kind,” she said.

Jan and her brother Jeff did all they could to stay positive and stay strong for their eldest sister, but they also wanted to ensure that her legacy was not one of sadness.

“Sue was full of life and a very positive, energetic person who ran her own lingerie company up until the day she died,” Jan said.

“There is nothing worse than watching someone you love dearly fade away from this disease and I am trying to help raise funds and awareness to finally find a cure and eradicate it.”

To honour Sue’s memory and raise money for MND Vic, Jan, a keen photographer since receiving her first camera at seven, is holding an exhibition of her images at the Red Hill Bakery, Balnarring.

TWO 14-year-old boys were threatened before being robbed in a Frankston shopping centre car park, 2.30pm, Saturday 18 June.

They, and a friend, were walking in the car park off Clyde St near Balmoral St, when they were approached by three older youths, of Islander appearance, who corralled them between parked cars and demanded their phones, caps and a satchel.

The boys were threatened with assault if they resisted.

the mainstream consciousness and Jan hopes ongoing fundraising efforts will help find a cure.

“By having this exhibition, and possibly more down the track, I hope to raise awareness of the disease, which has a 100 per cent death rate,” she said.

The exhibition “Whyte Vision” will be held at the Red Hill Bakery, Balnarring, throughout July.

“Many of these types of offences don’t involve forced entry and are opportunistic. We have also seen an increase in thefts from unlocked sheds and garages.

“Likewise, many thefts of and from vehicles involve unlocked cars – some with valuables on display.

Prevention is a focus and we need the community to work with us to reduce the risk.”

Attendant threatened A FRANKSTON service station attendant said he feared for his life when threatened by a man with a 40-50cm knife, 5pm, Wednesday 22 June.

Detective Sergeant Darren Paxman, of the Frankston Embona Armed Robbery Taskforce, said the attendant locked himself in a backroom when the offender, in his late 40s-early 50s, demanded cash and cigarettes.

Rebuffed, the offender fled on foot south along Nepean Hwy towards Oliver’s Hill. He is described as Caucasian, 183cm, medium build, wearing tradie pants, and a grey hoodie.

CARJACKINGS are at the top of high profile crimes being targeted by police in Frankston, with crime statistics data Victoria-wide showing the brazen thefts have shot up 80 per cent in the past year.

Three recent carjackings in Frankston – on Frankston-Flinders Rd, 30 October; in Bartlett St, Frankston South, 5 November, and in Ashley Av, Frankston, 15 June – highlight the dangers to motorists driving late at night.

The government is believed to be working closely with police on tough new laws, with an offence of carjacking to target those stealing a car using force or putting a person in fear of being subjected to force.

The offence of aggravated carjacking would apply where force is excessive, causes injury, or involves using a weapon.

The rise in vehicle-related crime has been driven by a significant increase in the theft of number plates,” Acting Superintendent Simon Humphrey said.

This information is included in Frankston police district crime statistics released recently. They show that, in the year to March, a record 15,286 offences were reported in Frankston compared to 14,271 the year before – a 7.1 per cent hike (or 1015 offences) in the year.

“The stolen plates are used to commit further offending, including pet-

rol theft, petrol drive offs and toll and fine avoidance,” he said.

“Number plates are relatively easy to steal, particularly those that have not been fixed with tamper-resistant screws. Victoria Police is currently engaged with VicRoads in work towards the development and implementation of theft-resistant and tamper-proof number plate technologies.

“But we also urge people to look after and secure their property – including number plates. They are commonly stolen from vehicles parked in residential streets, near railway stations and shopping centres.

“Where possible, people should park vehicles off-street, in locked garages where possible, or in well-lit areas.”

The crime statistics show a 64.41 per cent jump in public nuisance offences, 37.29 per cent jump in sexual offences, and 31.62 jump in burglary offences.

“Public nuisance numbers are very small (less than 100) and again the numbers are driven by the number of detections by police,” Superintendent Humphrey said.

“Sexual offence numbers have increased which has been driven by victims feeling more confident to come forward and report matters to police – including family violence and historical sex offences.

“Our Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams work alongside other support services to provide victims with the support and referrals they need.”

‘Better police work’ means drugs bust up A SENIOR Frankston policeman says the 42 per cent rise in drug dealing reported in the recently released State Crime Statistics reflects better detection by officers.

“We’re doing more to target dealers and remove illicit substances from the streets,” Acting Superintendent Simon Humphrey said.

The rise in drug dealing is included in a 7.1 per cent jump in crime in Frankston in the past year.

In the year to March, a record 15,286 offences were reported in Frankston compared to 14,271 the year before – up 1015 in the year.

“Peninsula Health has seen a 20 per cent increase in ice-related presentations,” Peninsula Health’s operations director mental health Sharon Sherwood said.

“We are working with other key stakeholders – the council, state government, Primary Health Network, and Monash and Melbourne universities – on a high level project focusing on pharmacotherapy issues in Frankston.”

Frankston mayor Cr James Dooley jumped to the city’s defence over claims that drug offences in Frankston have rocketed by more than 50 per cent in the past five years.

Cr James Dooley said the city’s ice problem was not out of control and that policing shortages and the large number of methadone facilities, had made the problem worse.

“It is true that Frankston did see a significant increase in drug offences 2012-16, but all of this increase occurred in 2013,” he said.

“Since then crime rates have remained quite stable.”

Cr Dooley said the reason for the earlier dramatic increase was that more police were allocated to Frankston resulting in more arrests.

He said drug offences, particularly, were driven by police activity: “The more police you have, the more street-drug offences are targeted and the more crime will be recorded.”

Frankston City Council had proactively advocated successive state governments over a long period to correct what was perceived as a shortage of police, resulting in numbers rising significantly 2011-2014, Cr Dooley said.

“This stemmed from the previous state government’s 1700/940 project, with Frankston receiving the most “extra” police in Victoria as a result.

“This increased level has been maintained by the present state government and is reflected in the level of offences recorded. We are thankful for the increased police presence in Frankston.”

Cr Dooley said the city needed more drug rehabilitation services – but this was a state-wide and national issue and not isolated to Frankston.

“Given it costs about $100,000 a year to jail a person, there is a real financial motive to providing rehabilitation,” he said.

“Of the 260 drug dealing and trafficking offences recorded in Frankston this year, 149 were for methamphetamine use and only three for heroin trafficking. [Source: Crime Statistics Authority, extraction from LEAP 18 April 2016].

“This shows that methadone prescriptions are working as an opioid diversionary tactic and preventing the widespread use of heroin. Following on from this, it is preventing the crime that is associated with heroin use.”

Cr Dooley said the council would “hold Dunkley Liberal and Labor candidates to account for their words with appropriate action” once the election result was known.

A ‘roo made me do it’ A MAN says he “swerved to miss a kangaroo” on Nepean Hwy, Seaford, 4am, Saturday 25 June – and he had not been drinking.

His Kia Sorrento’s brakes locked in the 70kph zone, causing the man to crash into a parked Toyota Rav 4 and roll his own. Both cars were written off in the accident, with the Kia’s curtain airbags being deployed and it finishing up on its side in the left hand, south-bound lane.

The 30-year-old Cranbourne man, who escaped injury and was found to be not alcohol or drug affected, walked away from the crash near Seaford Rd but is likely to face careless driving charges.

FRANKSTON Fire Brigade chairman Tony Byrne has written to residents on behalf of fire crews to “alleviate any fears they may have over the current climate in the media with regards to delivery of an effective fire service”.

At the core of his letter is the simmering CFA and United Fire Fighters’ industrial dispute which has resulted in a series of high-level CFA resignations and ill will between the state government and volunteer fire fighters.

A volunteer himself at Frankston for 27 years, Captain Byrne said the CFA was “widely known as a volunteer organisation and has been in place for some 127 years in Frankston”.

Crews operate from the station in Cranbourne Rd, Frankston.

“We have what is known as an “integrated fire station and have been since 1958,” he said.

“What this means is that we have both career (paid) and volunteer fire fighters working as one for the betterment of the community.

Bell rings on lifetime in the classroom Stephen Taylor steve@baysidenews.com.au “IT takes a village to raise a child” is an old saying that still rings true for retiring Patterson River Secondary College principal Maree Vinocuroff.

“I am concerned with challenges facing students, such a lack of connectedness with the community,” she said as she prepared for her departure late last month.

“If you take the school to be the village, it follows that structures and discipline are important features in the development of children.

“When I was young we referred to adults as Mr and Mrs and relatives as aunty or uncle, whereas now they can call us anything they like.”

Ms Vinocuroff has been at the college for 39 years as a classroom teacher, assistant principal and principal for the past 15 years, but is looking forward to having more free time to play golf, travel and be involved in Chelsea Rotary projects.

“I have seen the school move from strength to strength and become very well respected in the community,” she said yesterday.

“Over the years I have seen many students achieve success, some of whom are now staff members or parents of current students themselves. I have always been very proud of our students and their many and varied achievements.”

That said, she is concerned about a “lack of resilience” in young people – sometimes caused by parents opting to fight their children’s battles

for them. “When I was young if I had a problem but wouldn’t tackle it my parents would tell me to ‘toughen up’ and get on with it,” she said.

“It all comes back to having strong family values, and the majority of families here are fantastic.”

She said the rise of social media was also “an issue”, with students obsessed with what each other are doing every minute of the day.

“I worry that it breeds a lack of creativity,” she said.

In her time, Patterson River Secondary College has seen some major improvements, such as the new basketball stadium, performing arts centre, music program and the Soiree held each year, while education as a profession had benefited from the introduction of VCE, VCAL and VET. “The school went from 800 students when I arrived, to a peak of 1200 and now it’s back to 1060,” she said.

“We have done well and the students have achieved excellent results: I am certainly proud of them.

“Now I am seeing the children of former students here, and we have eight staff members who are former students.”

Ms Vinocuroff said invidious comparisons between Australian students and the high scholastic achievements of those in other countries were often misplaced. Travelling to education leader Finland to see for herself she discovered “a bit of a beat up” in analogies between us and them. Apples were not being compared with apples, according to Ms Vinocuroff.

“They are a country of few migrants, where parents demand success and where there is tremendous respect for teachers,” she said, citing Singapore as another example of a disciplined society which would baulk at the freedoms offered in schools here.

“Students over there would list their favourite times as reading, probably because of the weather, whereas here there is so much to do outside.”

She said Australian schools often “struggled with high migrant populations, and with looking after the overall wellbeing of their students”.

“That’s part of the job of teachers here, as many kids are from separated families, or have mental health issues. We act as a whole community in the support of our students.”

Ms Vinocuroff has a lot to look back on, having been in the education sector for 46 years.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and will look back fondly,” she said.

“I am proud to be leaving the school in good condition with excellent results and continually improving facilities.”

Ms Vinocuroff’s final day as school principal was on Friday 24 June.

Her successor as principal, yet to be chosen, will begin in Term 4.

A LEADING state government environmental monitoring agency is playing down about erosion on Mornington Peninsula beaches.

Alarm is mounting over the loss of sand at several beaches, including McCrae, with claims that sand loss is due to weather and the deepening of Port Phillip shipping channels.

Paul Millsom, of McCrae, has accused authorities of ignoring the threat and not doing enough to protect the coastline (‘Bay beaches faces diminishing returns’, The Times 27/6/16).

Port Phillip Baykeeper Neil Blake echoed Mr Millsom's fears, drawing on data that suggests the increases in tide heights are substantially greater than predicted by consultants' reports prepared for the Port of Melbourne Corporation before the 2008-2009 channel dredging.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning spokesman Nick Talbot said last week the department was “not aware of significant erosion along the Mornington Peninsula from storm events this year”.

Mr Blake has recorded and mapped Point Nepean beach profiles and water levels, citing significant erosion exacerbated by channel deepening over the past five years. He has just started a study of McCrae beach.

He said the “prevailing” view that beach sand lost along the peninsula will eventually return had resulted in the real threat being ignored.

“We know that sea levels are rising, so councils and governments need to be acting now,” he said.

Mr Talbot said sand movements at McCrae Beach were not related to channel deepening and were a “natural occurrence”.

“Sand movements at McCrae beach are driven by wind-generated waves from within Port Phillip, rather than ocean swell and as such these movements are expected to increase during storm events,” he said.

“The coastline is a dynamic environment with sand movements along Port Phillip Bay being a natural occurrence that DELWP continues to monitor.”

New car park for Frankston Hospital A THREE level multi-storey car park will be built at Frankston hospital. The extra 750 spaces will ease the burden of parking.

The works will be funded by a $16 million loan from the state government, repayable over 25 years.

Peninsula Health CEO Sue Williams said the extra space was “excellent news for our patients, staff and visitors”.

“The ongoing expansion and redevelopment of the hospital has increased the burden on car parking spaces,” she said.

“The existing multi-deck car park, which opened in 2013, provides 570 spaces and these are often full by 8.30am.

“The new car park will better service the increasing number of visitors to Frankston hospital.”

SEVEN bathing boxes at the south end of Mt Martha beach have been broken into, although police say the motive was more likely to have been “partying” by young intruders, not theft.

Sergeant John Coburn, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said doors to the boxes at the beachend of Prescott St were forced, from 17-20 June, causing damage that the owners will have to pay for.

“It is holiday time and they would have been used for shelter and partying by the young people who would have been up all night,” he said.

Robbery arrest DETECTIVES have arrested a Mornington man after two 15-year-old boys were robbed at knifepoint in Tyabb, 2am, Monday 13 June.

Detective Senior Constable Peter Butland, of Somerville CIU, said the boys were walking along Frankston-Flinders Rd when a car stopped and an 18-year-old man demanded one of their hoodies, wallet and phone. The victim’s credit card was later used to buy items.

Two days later police saw the car – a stolen Nissan Pulsar – in Carrum Downs and gave chase but abandoned it after a short distance.

A warrant was executed on the man’s house in Main St, Friday, where police allege they recovered some of the boy’s property.

Cyclist hit SUN glare is being blamed for a collision between a car and a bike in Mornington, Wednesday morning.

A cyclist riding north on Nepean Highway about 8am was struck from behind by a car near the Beleura Hill Rd intersection.

Sergeant Chris Stock, of Mornington police, said the impact sent the cyclist, 40, onto the bonnet of the car, smashing the windscreen.

He was taken to Frankston hospital “shaken and bruised” by the incident, but released later that day. The man driving the car was not injured.

“The driver told police that he couldn’t see the cyclist due to sun glare on the road,” Sergeant Stock said.

Somerville Highway Patrol police are investigating the collision.

Sergeant Stock urges riders to have their red tail lights on, which he said cuts through sun glare.

Bayside site for sale as school moves on Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au THE sprawling Mt Eliza campus of the Melbourne Business School is being marketed to overseas buyers, with its private beachfront access and buildings expected to fetch as much as $20 million.

The school is selling the 8.9 hectare Kunyung Rd property, partly due to falling interest in regionally-based business courses and a plan expand the school’s Carlton site as a “worldclass centre for business education”.

MBS media manager Emily FearGook said the “landscape” for business education had changed since the 1980s when the school moved some of its courses to the peninsula after merging with the Mt Eliza Business School. She said companies were now seeking shorter, inner-city courses, where international clients had easy access to airports.

Ms Fear-Gook said the eight Mt Eliza residents who attended a public information session on 24 July were told there were strict covenants on the building and land, which meant it could only be used for education, religion, religion-based aged-care or primary production.

However, there have been several alterations to the buildings over the years and it is believed only the Tudor-style, red-brick gatehouse is heritage listed.

Ten years later it was sold to the Australian Administrative Staff College, which was founded by the peninsula’s business community with the aim of providing high-quality business and management courses.

The staff college later became the

Mt Eliza Business School, which merged with the Melbourne Business School in the 1980s.

Retired Tyabb businessman Peter McCullough once lived next to the property and remembers attending a four-week “intermediate” management course when it was the Australian Administrative Staff College in 1969. Mr McCullough, who worked with the Country Roads Board, said the college was highly regarded within the business community.

“There were about 60 other business people at this particular course, and the college ran a range of management courses that were always very popular.”

Footy match raises patriotic funds Compiled by Melissa Walsh A FOOTBALL match was played at Frankston on Saturday last, between the locals and a team from Naval Base, a collection being taken up in aid of patriotic funds.

The day was cold and showery, which mitigated against a large attendance. The game was pretty evenly contested, and resulted in a win for the visitors by 3.9 to 2.9. *** THE Presbyterian services throughout this district will be conducted on Sunday next by the Rev. G. Carson, of Mornington, the local Moderator.

The sacrament of the Holy Communion will be dispensed at each service. The services are advertised. *** THE annual meeting of the Frankston Red Cross Society will be held in the Mechanics’ Hall on Tuesday evening, 11th July, at 8 o’clock, when a full attendance of members is requested, as there is a large amount of important business to transact including election of officers for ensuing year. *** MR Jack Stewart, the popular engineer and machinist, of the Flinders Naval Base, was married to Mrs M. Bygate, of St Kilda, last week.

A very enthusiastic welcome was tendered the happy couple on the evening of their arrival at the Base, and the wedding presents were both numerous and costly. *** THE plain and fancy dress ball to

FRESH AND FABULOUS AT THE GPO HOTEL

By Melissa Walsh Moving from the city five years ago to start a new foray into beachside dining, Patrick Bowring, head chef at the GPO Hotel Rosebud quickly settled into the peninsula lifestyle.

As a chef, husband and father of two young girls, living in Rosebud has turned out to be an unexpected blessing.

“I had worked in mostly inner city pubs and restaurants from the time I did my apprenticeship under Andrew McConnell. I had always worked behind the bar but had a real interest in the kitchen. The head chef at the time said I would have to start out doing dishes so I did and I was soon doing my apprenticeship learning modern European cuisine at Circa which went from two hats to three, the highest award for a restaurant,” said the chef who now boasts experience from not only Circa, but The Kingston and The Pavilion to name a few.

Patrick is not shy to introduce new flavours and styles whilst not letting go of traditional pub specials, and has set the GPO Hotel alight with his yearn to set the trends, not follow them.

With a very down to earth attitude, Patrick admits that, like most chefs, he really just fell into it.

“I think it’s a common story. A lot of chefs start out because they didn’t really know what they wanted to do.

Then you develop a passion for it,” said Patrick, who was 18 when he decided to delve into the culinary world.

Since starting at the GPO Hotel in 2014, Patrick has been involved in a huge refurbishment and rebranding which included evolving the menu into something unique and well sought after in the area.

“I have modernized the menu but kept the core of fresh foods, and lots of local produce. We lean towards more a tex mex style of food and have two smokers where we smoke our meats in applewood, yellow box or red gum,” said Patrick. “We do a whole fish smoked on the wood and break it up on hot tortillas. We do nachos with pickled chilies, dishes that seem simple but a lot of technique is involved. Our emphasis is on good quality ingredients and we don’t turn food into something it’s not.”

At the GPO Hotel there is a lot of shared dishes and tapas style food as well as tasty vegetarian entrees.

“We do lots of seafood as well, and pork belly with corn bread, smoked beans and southern style American food.”

With winter upon us, Patrick and his sioux chef will be out foraging for mushrooms to

add to their fabulous dishes.

“We both enjoy foraging around Red Hill and use the mushrooms in dishes like our pasta with local pine mushrooms so have more earthy food.”

While a lot of the focus is on creating hearty modern dishes with fresh ingredients, Patrick says the desserts are also second to none.

“We make all our own desserts, like the ricotta donuts, brown sugar quince parfait with shards of meringue and chestnuts,” said Patrick. “The GPO Hotel is a driving force in establishing Rosebud as a reputable food destination. Romantic dinners, family reunions, and special occasions are all catered for here.”

COL ELLIOTT PERFORMS AT THE GRAND

The 67 year old funny man is performing at The Grand in Mornington on July 7 and says audiences should get ready for an adults only night of standup comedy, crazy characters, music and stories.

With four generations of fans, thirteen gold and platinum albums and countless awards to his credit, Elliott is still packing them out with a sense of humor that is timeless.

“Nothing and nobody is sacred at my show and it’s certainly not politically correct,” says Elliott, whose comedy started back in the early 1970s when he was in the navy and made extra dollars in the bars of Singapore and Hong Kong doing standup routines. “I still write continually after all these years and have so much material with people

Starting his career in comedy was a natural progression for Elliott who got out of the navy at 23 and won Kevin Dennis New Faces which immediately gave him loads of publicity.

“I had no money and needed new tyres for my car so decided to enter the show,” said Elliott, who joined the ranks of stars like John Farnham and Paul Hogan who also gained notoriety through the tv talent show.

“I remember I did a gay skit which was very funny but I’m not sure would go down too well these days.”

When Elliott first started out there wasn’t a lot of comedians and his first tv show was on Sky Channel.

“It was played in all the pubs and really took off in the early 80’s, starting out with ‘Hey you bloody mug’. Comedians weren’t very prolific and before long there came Kevin ‘Bloody Wilson’,” he said.

“It’s a different game now from 40 years ago. There are some boundaries you don’t push but still take the mickey out of people,” he said.

“I got a real buzz when I won a gold DVD and was presented with Carl Baron who said to me ‘you’re the reason I got into comedy. We used to listen to you all day when I was working and I decided that’s what I wanted to do.’ I thought that was a lovely thing for him to say,” said Elliott who has consistently and successfully maintained a comedy career for decades, and is looking forward to performing in Mornington next month.

“I used to live in Rosebud many years ago and still have sisters in Langwarrin so I’ve spent a bit of time on the peninsula. But I’ve never performed at The Grand so it should be a lot of fun. Expect to be surprised and a night of laughter but don’t come if you’re thin-skinned,” says Elliott with a laugh.

Notes from the bunker: Understanding Brexit

By Stuart McCullough DON’T panic. I did, for a moment, but I think I’ve calmed down now.

It’s more the unholy surprise of the result that saw me spring into action, strapping a metal colander on top of my head as an improvised helmet and digging a large hole in the backyard into which I intended to crawl in the hope of avoiding the inevitable fiscal fallout. The Brexit is coming. Much like the Avian Flu and the most recent season of ‘Glee’, there is nothing we can do to avoid it. We can only try to protect ourselves as best as circumstances will allow.

Let me say now that digging a really big hole is, in fact, a lot harder than it appears on television. After forty minutes of effort, I looked like a wrung out sponge and the back yard had a slight dent. My plans to live a harmonious existence beneath the earth’s surface emerging only at night for supplies were, by this time, in total disarray. Loosening the chinstrap and letting the colander fall to the ground I sat and stared at the sky, wondering precisely where it all went so horribly wrong.

It’s hard to believe. Only last week, the soon-to-be ex-Prime Minister David Cameron deployed the slogan ‘Brits Don’t Quit’ to devastating effect. Frankly, there’s no comeback for a line like that; deriving, as it does, from that most compelling of political campaigners, MC Hammer. Whilst the connection was not made explicitly, I suspect that subconsciously, millions of people found themselves mumbling ‘2 legit to quit’ under their breath for reasons they didn’t quite understand at the time. Maybe the Prime Minis-

ter didn’t make the connection clear enough. Had he used the slogan whilst wearing parachute pants and performing dance moves, the result might have gone the other way. Perhaps.

So Britain is leaving the European Union. For reasons known only to themselves, millions of people have elected to strap a gigantic outboard engine to the bottom of the island (probably somewhere in Cornwall, I’d suggest Lizard Point) to push the whole thing further out to sea. Who knows where they’ll end up? Given that Britain will no longer be part of Europe, I understand that international law dictates that the AFL’s ‘free agency’ rules apply. Whether Britain should be considered a totally free or restricted free

agent isn’t entirely clear from the voting result. Whatever the case, chances are they are free to join the geopolitical alliance of their choice.

My money’s on South East Asia.

By moving just a few thousand miles south, the British climate will improve dramatically and locals will be able to undertake duty free shopping at all times. This might have been a major motivation for the ‘leave’ vote. Not that it’d be easy. For some time, tensions have been escalating in the South China Sea as countries lay claim to the region by building little islands. They’ be quite put out if they woke up one morning and found Britain had decided to park itself there, like a gigantic backpacker campervan out the front of

your house.

As Britain drags itself away from Europe, heading for sunnier climes, the entire country will be a gigantic Fairstar the Funship, pulling into port and allowing its passengers to run amok before rounding them up and heading to the next destination. It will be, frankly, the largest Contiki cruise the world has ever seen. But it’s all well and good that they’ve decided to so forcefully renounce geography, but what are the likely impacts of the seemingly drastic decision?

Firstly, Britain will no longer be allowed to compete at Eurovision.

Granted, some might say that they’ve not been competing at Eurovision for many years now and their non-

attendance might be something of a mercy killing, but still. There are up to dozens of people who’ve spent their lives dreaming of Eurovision glory whose hopes have just been crushed.

Also, ever wondered how James Bond would simply pop up in Spain or Italy or Russia? From now on, a good fortyfive minutes of every Bond film will be spent with 007 as he waits to get through customs.

It’s easy to stick the boots into something like the European Union.

But those who wish to slag it off do so by ignoring it’s major achievements.

Namely, Euro Disney. No longer will the British be able to savour the unholy collision of Hollywood and mainland continental Europe. Je m’appelle Mickey Mouse? Not any more, it isn’t.

Then there’s the issue of the Chunnel, which will have to be corked up as a matter of urgency. Doubtless, Boris Johnston is making an emergency trip to Bunnings as I write this, looking for the biggest plug he possible can. Also, Britain will be forbidden from listening to music by the band ‘Europe’.

Until you’re no longer permitted to listen to ‘The Final Countdown’ any time the mood strikes, you’ve no idea how big a whole in your life it leaves.

So what happen next? Granted, the world will keep spinning on its axis, even if financial markets call in sick next week with a colossal dose of ‘Euro-flu’. It’s a funny age we live in.

One where complex ideas are reduced to slogans, regardless of consequence.

Sharks make a statement

By Toe Punt BONBEACH is starting to flex its muscles in MPNFL Peninsula Division and is starting to make a statement.

While all the talk surrounds Frankston YCW and who is going to challenge, the Sharks are emerging as a team that seems to be getting things together at the right time.

In what many considered to be a 5050 game against Seaford on Saturday, the Sharks hammered the visitors to the tune of 32 points, 15.8 (98) to 9.12 (66).

Bonbeach has now won six of its past seven matches after losing the opening four games of the season.

In the corresponding game in Round three, Bonbeach lost to Seaford by 11 points. That’s a 43 point turnaround in two months of footy – that is significant.

At the time of going down to YCW by 114 points in Round four and then beating Mt Eliza to open its account the following week, Bonbeach coach Steve Hughes said “perhaps we need YC to kick start us every year”.

Kick start the Sharks they have with key players in Shane McDonald and Dylan Jones having a significant impact on games.

Jones dominated in the middle on Saturday and McDonald was at his sensational best, booting five goals.

Luke Damon is up and running now and having a big impact on the playing ground and results. He booted three majors on Saturday.

Matt Douglas was superb again in his seventh game for the season and Jacob Flannery is stringing some good footy together also for the Sharks – that’s where the improvement is coming from, the form of the ‘lesser-likes’ without reputations.

The Tigers were right in it at half time and three quarter time, trailing by just 10 and 14 points respectively.

The Sharks kicked five goals to two in the last. Brad Doyle and Liam Davenport were outstanding for the Tigers while Aaron Walton kicked three goals.

Frankston YCW was held goalless and trailed Langwarrin at quarter time by 14 points.

At half time the Stonecats had taken

control and led by five goals and the final margin was 72 points, 14.19 (103) to 4.7 (31).

Kangas coach Brad Dredge said on the RPP Footy Show on Saturday morning that the mantra of his side was that they were “hard to play against”.

It’s certainly a reputation that the Kangas have among other coaches and they made life difficult for the Stonecats again on Saturday.

Anthony Bruhn and Craig Nankervis were superb for the winners while Andrew Withers and Josh Biggs were the best of the blue and white.

Pines blew Karingal away in the first quarter and opened up a 42 point lead by half time, eventually winning by 34 points, 17.12 (114) to 12.8 (80).

Karingal was able to offer some resistance in the second half, outscoring the Pythons five goals to three.

Tim Bongetti was magnificent again for the Pythons with three majors while Luke Potts, Aaron Edwards and Beau Hendry combined in the middle and around the ground to be three of the best players on the park.

Key defender Jack Fisher claimed yet another scalp on Saturday, restricting Leigh Poholke to one goal. Chris Hay booted three for the Bulls and Darcy Hope was solid in his first senior outing.

Justin Van Unen booted seven goals as Mt Eliza belted Mornington by more than 10 goals, 22.10 (142) to 9.9 (63).

The Redlegs booted the first four goals of the match and by half time had opened up a 10 goal break after booting nine majors in the second.

Nathan Ryan, James Hammond and Jordan Capkin all got among the goals as the Redlegs flexed their muscle for the first time this season.

In the other Sunday game, Edithvale-Aspendale shook off a persistent Chelsea to win by almost four goals.

Things were tight in the three quarters before the Eagles skipped away, winning 12.16 (88) to 9.11 (65).

Tigers hold on in a thriller NEPEAN LEAGUE

By Toe Punt Even a seven goal last quarter couldn’t help Devon Meadows steal a win against Dromana in MPNFL Nepean Division on Saturday.

Trailing by four goals at three quarter time, the Panthers stormed home in the final 30 minutes, albeit never hitting the front, only to fall just short, 15.11 (101) to 14.13 (97).

It was Dromana coach Rikki Johnston who proved to be the difference between the sides, booting six goals in a best on ground performance.

Rated one of the best defenders of all time, Rikki J has booted 17 goals since swinging himself forward against Tyabb in Round seven.

Johnston now forms part of what looks to be a pretty potent forward half, which includes Beau Cosson and Beau McMurray, who both booted three goals on Saturday.

Billy Quigley has been sensational for the Tigers this season and his consistency has run against the grain of many of his teammates.

Terry Wheeler has also been providing outstanding leadership for the likes of Daniel Marchesani and Ethan Johnstone.

The Panthers were gallant again, losing their second straight match by less than a goal after beating Sorrento three weeks ago.

Coach Glenn Michie, who announced his playing retirement at season’s end on Saturday morning’s RPP Footy Show, said that “kids were getting an opportunity”.

“When I put my best side on the board in the pre-season, there were more than a dozen blokes on it that are not playing

now through injury,” Michie said.

“In any club, that makes things pretty tough, however, the kids are getting an opportunity and they are now starting to find their way at the level. Our past few performances have proven that.

“We have also been rocked by Beau Miller’s illness and the effect of this news and Beau’s ongoing fight and battle has had a significant impact.

“We have had a sports chaplin in at our footy club and I think now, some nine weeks later, we’re just starting to get a handle on it.

“Beau Miller is one of the strongest people, both mentally and physically, I have ever had the fortune to meet in my 20 years of playing senior football. He’s fighting one hell of a battle but the whole footy community, throughout the MPNFL, is right behind him and his family,” Michie said.

Jesse Bowe played arguably his best game for the Panthers while Steve Roberts continues to dominate in his return season after knee reconstructions. Roberts would be leading the club B&F in his first season. Chris Doria is also having a very consistent season.

Frankston Bombers bounced back from its defeat at the hands of Sorrento last week, belting Crib Point 16.16 (112) to 5.4 (34).

The Bombers were in an uncompromising mood on Saturday and put the Magpies to the sword.

With Beau Muston missing with a knee injury and Zac White missing through suspension, it left the door ajar for one of the best players to ever grace an MPNFL field in Brian O’Carroll to return.

Despite not playing footy for almost three years, O’Carroll was slotted straight back into the senior team.

Muston told the RPP Footy Show that while he is “all for club culture and setting the right example”, O’Carroll was an exception to the rule.

“Brian is one of the best and most decorated players this footy club has ever seen and I had no hesitation putting him straight back into the senior team,” Muston said.

“We need him up and running when the whips are cracking. He is in a great place mentally and just wanted to get back playing footy with his mates.

“It had nothing to do with what we might be able to achieve this season, Brian would have come back if we were on the bottom of the ladder.”

Frankston also saw the return of Ryan Kitchen from suspension and a hamstring injury, while Luke James made an impact with four goals. Michael Maiorino was also sensational yet again with six goals, while the unheralded Josh Francis and Josh Chapman continue to find the footy.

The Magpies, who have been ultracompetitive in recent weeks, were never in the hunt.

Mitch Stansborough played his best game since crossing from Mornington, as did Matty Hogan, since crossing from Frankston YCW. Dean Warry and Luke Herrington are just stars!

Rosebud flexed its muscles and added some valuable percentage, smashing Tyabb 19.29 (143) to 5.7 (37).

Inaccuracy cost the Buds dearly, however, didn’t prevent a 100 plus point win.

Keegan Downie booted seven goals for the Buds and was one of his team’s best while Ryan Spooner (three goals) and Greg Bentley put on a clinic.

Jake Anderson and Rohan McGrath were the best of the Yabbies.

Hail, hail the nine men of Frankston Pines SOCCER

By Craig MacKenzie FRANKSTON Pines returned from the Latrobe Valley with a precious point on Saturday as it bids to avoid relegation from State 1 South-East.

The Monterey Reserve side earned a 3-3 draw against Morwell Pegasus in dramatic circumstances ending this catch-up fixture with nine men.

Pines central defender Nick Lekakis and goalkeeper James Laminski were unavailable due to holidays but the side was bolstered by the midweek captures of forwards Josh Calle from Langwarrin and Naseer Mohammad from Casey Comets.

Ioasa Saemo took up a central defensive role alongside Ben Caffrey while Calle partnered Mathew Hames up front.

The visitors dominated the opening half-hour but couldn’t break through.

Calle got onto the end of a Stefan Soler cross in the opening minutes but his shot was saved by teenage Morwell keeper Liam Andersen.

In the 6th minute Andersen did well to tip over a Calle free-kick and Calle thought he’d opened the scoring in the 13th minute but his attempt was cleared off the line.

In the 28th minute Pines paid dearly for losing possession when a Morwell player slammed the ball into young Graham Hill who had instinctively turned side-on.

Pines supporters were up in arms as the referee pointed to the spot and sent off Hill before Morwell’s John Kuol struck his penalty attempt past Pines custodian Sam Grigg to make it 1-0.

Eight minutes later Pines were staring down the barrel when a defensive mix-up between Caffrey and Saemo enabled Morwell striker Mat Luak to slot the ball past Grigg to make it 2-0.

Right on half-time Calle again was denied by Andersen after good leadup play by Kane Bentley.

But two minutes into the second stanza John Negassi played Calle in and he turned and struck a firm shot past Andersen to make it 2-1.

Hames had two chances to score in the 52nd minute but his first shot was blocked by Andersen and his

second attempt from the rebound came off a defender and went out for a corner.

In the 57th minute Hames again broke clear but rather than cutting the ball back he went for goal and his shot struck Andersen and went out for a corner.

Andersen’s sole blemish came in the 67th minute when his poor clearance was met just inside the attacking half by Pines veteran Caffrey whose perfect strike sent the ball sailing over Andersen and into the unguarded Morwell goal for a stunning equaliser.

In the 70th minute Pines gave the ball away and Morwell hit hard on the break with Malesh Jadaeile finally getting the vital touch to make it 3-2.

Caffrey protested to the referee claiming offside and was yellow carded.

The impact of that caution was felt 15 minutes later when a Caffrey bodycheck earned a second yellow and a dismissal leaving Pines with just nine men.

But Pines kept pressing and in the 95th minute a Matt Davis free-kick was headed out for a corner.

Davis took the corner and the ball fell to Bentley at the far post and he volleyed it home to become an instant hero.

“To get a 3-3 draw in these circumstances was wonderful,” said Pines gaffer Billy Rae. “The players should be so proud of that performance because we played them off the park with 10 men.

“I couldn’t ask for any more from these players.”

Pines was the only local side in action last weekend. Langwarrin, Peninsula Strikers and Seaford United were due to play previously postponed fixtures but once again their games were called off.

It was particularly frustrating for Strikers who arrived at Anderson Park for Saturday’s reserves fixture against Doncaster Rovers to find that the ground hadn’t been marked out.

Eventually someone from Doncaster started marking out the pitch but they used lime, which is illegal, tried to paint over it but to no avail and the

senior referee called off the senior fixture.

“I don’t know what’s going on up there but it was a complete shambles,” said Strikers president Mark Brandon.

However, there was a positive aspect to the shemozzle as Doncaster central midfielder Matt Bell is expected to join Strikers this week after approaching Strikers assistant coach Billy Buchanan.

“He’s been involved with Derby County back in England and he’s only in his mid 20s so he’s exactly what we’ve been looking for,” said Buchanan.

Meanwhile State 4 South league leader Skye United fell victim to thieves last week when its storage facility at its home ground was broken into.

Items stolen included trailers, portable goals, exercise equipment, footballs, training bibs and kitchen equipment.

The club has taken to social media to itemise the stolen items and to appeal to anyone with information to contact Frankston police.
