B HOUSE - a private habitat in the city core 2nd year core studio - individual project Type: residential Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada August 2012 ~ December 2012 The intent of building overpass is saving traffic space, however, a huge rate of spaces under it has been wasted. In this project I was trying to explore the possibility of using these spaces in a residential way. Environemtal factors i need to deal with are: privacy, natural light, acoustic isolation and limited floor space (max. 13m^2). At the very beginning of the project, I’ve already decided to suspend the structure in the air, instead of standing on the earth, because I thought this is best way to keep privacy. After that, all the façades was designed to be double-glazing glass wall, which would welcomes natural light from all the directions and at the same time, reject the sound pollution. In order to place all the basic living equipment in this tiny habitat, all the furniture are customized to be fordable style and fixed on the floor, which would create a functional and compact living and working space. The concept of B-house is inspired by beehive, the hexagonshaped structure would create a strong tension frame, and also create huge amount of void spaces to allow natural light coming into the interior.

ISLAND SYMPOSIUM - an ecological research results 2nd year core studio - individual project Type: culture Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada January 2013 ~ April 2013 The project Island Symposium is a multi-functional research results for scholars and students to study, research and discuss the ecological system of Toronto’s Centre Island and its surrounding water area. It provides a library, a computer room, a workshop, a conference room, a café, an exhibition space and a living area for visitors to work and live on the island. Location of the building was chose on the shore of “Snake Island”, because it would give two modes of transportations (yacht and bike) to visitors when they .want to have a field trip The concept of the Island symposium is “nest”, because the feature of a nest is to keep warm and safety for baby birds and I want the visitors to have the same feeling, and also a feeling of living in the nature The appearance of the building was also followed the concept: outline of the building was tracing the border of the surrounding trees, which created arandon but also natural style; all the structures were using nature lumbers and exterior wall were designed into an irregular grid shape; elevation of the inner edge area is much lower than the out edge’s, so the visitors would get into the building step by step, just like a real nest

PENT HOUSE DESIGN 3rd year interior residential studio (ARIDO) - individual project Type: redidential Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada January 2014 ~ April 2014 In this project, I was asked to design the interior of a penthouse, which is given by the floor plan. The concept of this project is “Zhong-Yong, which is a Chinese word, and it means the balance between all the elements. As you can see in the concept drawing, the Chinese pattern in the middle separate the picture into a symmetrical image. Although patterns of two sides are different, they are arranged and organized in an ingenious way, results a balancing composition. (refer to renderings( Natural light is another important element in this project, because only one side of the house has windows, the rest are solid walls. Thus I decided to widely use translucent glass wall in this project, because it can create privacy for some private spaces and create shades of light. For example, I placed an amber glass wall as the divider between living room and dinning to let a bit amount of natural light coming into the living room, in order to create a relaxing atmosphere. XIU-GARDEN - a residential + commercial dwelling 3rd year core studio - individual project Type: residential Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada August 2014 ~ December 2014 Xiu-Garden is a project designed for my parents, they were asking for an dwelling, which contains both residential and gallery program. It was also a renovation project, original building was a concrete and brick structured, 2-storey house, in the renovation, an extra level would be built on top of its roof without destroy the façade and structure of the original one Because one of the intentions of this house is to exhibit my parents’ products (Chinese antiques and Chinese embroidery), a symbolic decorative frame was added to the exterior wall, in order to create an oriental-influenced outlook, which is obviously different from surrounding buildings and could attract visitors There are 3 levels in Xiu-garden, and they have different programs, 1st floor contains a garage and two entrances, the front one is the public entrance accesses to the gallery, and the rear one accesses to the residential area. Xiu-Garden’s 2nd floor is an open style gallery space and the 3rd floor is a compact living area includes both social space and private space. A un-sheltered light courtyard in the middle of the house connect all of these 3 spaces into one combination, and also let people to see seasonal phenomenon in different periods of the year Xiu-garden is a combination of contradictions, 1st floor solid brick façade VS 2nd floor glass wall with wooden grid VS 3rd floor translucent amber glass wall; oriental style VS modern; interaction of natural lights coming from different direction. All these contradictions were purposely and carefully arranged in the space and created an abnormal aesthetic concept
THESIS PROJECT - a new concept of urban park 4th year core studio - individual project Type: culture Location: Toronto,Ontario, Canada August 2014 ~ April 2015
Thesis concept I am investigating…the design of urban park as a central public space provides a breathing room for urban workers in the downtown core of Toronto So that I can understand…the fundamental aspects related to develop new concepts for downtown parks with a particular focus on enhancing health and wellbeing In order to achieve…a new concept of urban park, suitable to Toronto’s climate and culture and offers divers ways of supporting heath, wellbeing, ease the tension It is important because…parks should play a very important role in providing heath benefits in a large city. However, parks in Toronto need to develop new approaches to benefiting and serving urban workers and residents I hope this project will…create a hint for people to realize the importance of nature and natural activities in the urban core, and how parks can create opportunities for people to live more natural more relaxed and healthier in the urban environment In my thesis project, I was trying to renovate Cloud Garden (located at Richmond street & Yonge Street) into a multifunctional public place, provides visitors more opportunities to stay healthier in the urban environment The building was designed with 2 levels, the ground level is a terraced park space, which has large water garden in the middle, and a suspended outdoor ramp; the underground level had more functions, a capsule hotel offers people a private and comfortable relaxing place during the break; a quite library space; and also a indoor swimming poor and a climbing club for visitors to do activities, which are hard to find in downtown Toronto
