01 Regenerative Relic An urban farm in a gasholder ruin duo project |2023.2-2023.5

Gasholders were common infrastructures until being replaced in the late 20th century. However, some of them left the structure still remain partially as memory for the nearby community. The community are left in different fates with some needed a renaissance. This project is dedicated to have a community hub combined with urban farm build upon a gasholder relic. Not only is it intended to raise a possible solution to the vegetable shortage crisis in UK, but also based on the community's memory to avoid "coming out of nowhere".

Phase Design Strategy Stage 2: Increase in scale, attract outsiders, generate income Two circles of high-rise structures fall to t he ground, r estoring the effect of the Gas Holder on the city skyline. Visually guide outsiders to participate. With the participation of outsiders, the commercial content of the kiosk becomes richer and the scale of vegetable planting increases, which not only meets the needs of residents, but also sells fresh vegetables and lower than market prices to outsiders, creating additional income and attracting outsiders to participate in the Gas Holder.

Stage 1: Improve the environment Address the needs of residents With a small amount of financial support from the government, the site was initially cleaned, and the soil quality of the site was improved by planting green plants and the water quality of the pool was purified. First of all, two circles are opened to put in place the foundation of the construction facilities and kiosks that provide the hydroponic vegetable frame of the pool. Provide low rent kiosks and vegetable growing Spaces for residents. Addressing residents' needs for food and vegetables and gathering activities, and transforming Gas holders into green Spaces open to residents.

Stage 3: Business transformation, create jobs After the Gas Holder has improved the environment, realized the initial phase of urban farm, and gained the attention of outsiders, further investment will be made to renovate and open the Gas Pipes garden.

Stage 4: Consumption upgrading, better community facilities, gasholder as a sceond city node At the same time, a green park to purify the environment of the GasHolder and a museum to retain some of the legacy facilities of the Gas Holder will attract the consumption of the Gas Holder and leave a deep impression on the outsiders. It also enables local residents to engage in social and collective activities to address their vegetable needs and create jobs and revenue, making the Gas Holder a symbol of community identity.

At the same time, the kiosk area can be organized by local Theater Performance Union to carry out drama performances during nonsales periods. Gas Ppies garden visits and cultural performances are provided to residents and visitors. At the same time, Gas Pipes garden and performance management will provide management

The main structural unit of the sun room is a frame composed of steel columns and wooden boards. The screw structure is used to fix and combine the beams and columns. The vertical columns are fixed to each other by mortise and tenon. Each node of the column is fitted with a node-ring, and the facades are connected by crossed steel cables to provide tension support for the facades. The railings are made of simple steel in custom sizes. To achieve cost savings, lightweight design for easy assembly and disassembly.

The incubator is the carrier between the pro - horizontal platform and vegetable planting. In the material selection of polypropylene composite lightweight material, to provide stable structural support, while providing buoyancy on the water surface. Through the appropriate density of the mesh frame, to provide a surface cultivation infrastructure for vegetables. At the same time, in order to adapt to the water demand of different kinds of vegetables and roots, through the bottom support, different height of the cultivation rack is set for different kinds of vegetables cultivation environment. For different height of the incubator, from the water level of the incubator, to different height of the species. By setting the platform with different height difference, the proper operation mode of human body can be achieved. Conducive to vegetable planting daily operation and harvest. 1. Lighting: As a closed sunlight room, we selected Polyethylene (PE) plastic films for the exterior facade. It is used for photosynthesis of hydroponic crops in the sun room. Meanwhile, the multi-layer structure provides space structure for people to block sunlight. 2. Ventilation: the pool of the sun room is lower than the ground. Since the heat absorption efficiency of the water environment is higher than that of the external environment, the air flows from the outside of the first floor into the interior. At the same time, because of the transpiration of the plants, the air pressure in the upper space of the sunroom is higher than the outside environment, and the air flows from the inside out. Realize the air circulation of the lower inflow and the upper outflow. 3. Water saving: In the outer ring structure of the sun room, we use the column as a hollow water collection device. The external rain water is drained through the support of the ceiling, and the water is collected and reused through the column water collection device. At the same time, the water vapor produced by internal transpiration will condense in the inner ceiling, collecting water in the same way.

The need of bathing: labour works Apart from individual commercials, most of the occupation in Bootle are related to light or even heavy industry. Manual labour works need relaxation and bathing might be a decent solution. The meaning of Bathing The process of bathing is the moment one’s body closest to nature as probably the only time being fully naked. In this way bathing is actually a moment to flee from mundane business and indulge in nature. When it comes to nature, a tree is one of the most creature symbolize the nature. It is eternal, quiet but vigours. Bathing in a tree might be the idea.

03 Rest Above the Horizons B o o t l e Re f o r m a t i o n P t 2 : A retirement home for the community individual project |2021.2-2021.6

This is a community based retirement home. Initially led by the university and local non-profit organization SAFE in Bootle. It is aimed to revive the community after COVID. The retirement home consists of two sets of flats with a terrace in the middle. A park build on the ruins of St. Mary church on the west and an exhibition center set behind the local pub. A sky bridge connects the three part together. To have three parts is to have three types of spaces from private to public. This retirement home is not just a place for the elders to spend their time but to be their new home. Therefore, making public and semi-public space is one method to avoid them feeling isolated. Functions are also set to meet their preferable needs.

11

Bootle: What makes the Retirement Home Different 1. The elders need a peaceful life while not being completly separated. 2. The elders should always keep connected to the society mentally and physically. Their residence should be easily visited and friendly to guests for staying, whether indoor or outdoor. 3. The elders need to keep their daily lives interesting and not aparted from the society. They need places for them to spend their day.

Bootle New Strand Station

The Site: Sitting around local non-profit organization SAFE's hub and surrounded by dense residentials. Close to public transports.

• A garden/park for the elders to do gardening. Gardening is by statistics one of the most popular activities among British old people. It will be nice to have a large area for open gardening which is good for physical health and killing time. It can also be served partially as a playground for young people and children, adding more elements towards the local community.

06 Chengdu Long Quan TOD Design A Pleasure to Transfer professional competition team project |2022.3

A TOD project for Long Quan Mountain Station in Chengdu, China. The special of this design is the transfer tunnels between two stations. Normally they are dull designs with unpleasant ventilation and no view at all. This project tried to combine it with the commercial center together, making a desirable walk experience under the completion of base requirement of the client.

22

A Better Transfer Experience Open corridor for transfer Traditionally, if two tube stations are separated from each other but require transfer, a long corridor will be constructed to connect the two (normally underground). These corridors can reach up to 500 meters with no exterior view and totally rely on mechanical ventilation. Experiences can be unpleasant especially during rush hours. This is based on the transfer corridor located right next to the main shopping mall. It is to breakthourgh

07 Overall Planning and Architectural Sscheme Design of Guanyinshan Area Stone Villa but refurbished

professional competition team project |2022.3-4

Villa Scattered among the Swallow. The resort took place in Shishi City, Fujian Province, which was once part of the silk roads. Fujian Province also has a significant number of returned overseas Chinese and overseas due to its early involvement in international student exchange programs. The small villas scattered within the hotel draw inspiration from the traditional local architecture of Shishi City, known as " 石厝 "

25

Site Analysis and Conservation Strategy Strategy 01 The site is located on the beach opposite Redtaiwan Road in the southeast of Sandi Village, Yongning Town. To the north, there is the Redtaiwan Park, to the west, the Coastal Expressway, to the south, the Golden Coast Project, and to the east, the Taiwan Strait. Sandi Village is a traditional residential village with most houses being traditional stone houses, locally known as "Dongcuo."

Preserving the original features and elements of the the stone villas ( 石厝)

Stone villa, or " 石 厝 " (Shicuo) in Chinese, are traditional residences in the coastal regions of Fujian. They were adapted to suit the unique coastal environment. Since the Fujian coast is prone to typhoons, these houses were typically constructed using stone rather than wood. In terms of design, the streamlined swallowtail roof of these buildings provides excellent lightning protection. The added weight of the roof enhances its stability in strong winds. The roof design often incorporates perforated tiles, serving both decorative and functional purposes. The openings allow wind to pass through, reducing damage and erosion to the roof. In some cases, stone blocks are placed on the roof tiles to prevent them from being blown away by strong winds. Stone houses have been a distinctive feature of coastal Fujian for centuries, and their design features for wind resistance are of great value and significance, particularly in areas prone to high winds and typhoons.

Strategy 02 Conserving existing site historical relics and site signatures.

Strategy 03 Maintain the spatial sense of the original stone villa.

Site Boundary Preserved Original Stone Villa Rebuild on the Relic

26

Stone Villa Current Status

Stone Villa Refurbishment - Principle 1. Preserve the essence of history Preserve value, optimize and upgrade building materials; display in their original form to the public as much as possible.

2. Recall the atmosphere of the village Utilize the original layout while optimizing the flow of entry and exit, preserving the village atmosphere.

"Changing with the times."

3. Inserting new vitality functions. The focus is on attracting the younger generation with a variety of activities, such as museums, cultural creativity, and the combination of diverse cultures and spaces, to add new vitality to Stone Villa. 4. Creating a humane place Preserving the original scale of Stone Villa, harmonizing spaces, and combining it with a new integrated complex to create an empowered commercial space.

Stone House Refurbishment - Strategy

27

Stone House Refurbishment - Strategy 1. Adhering to the spatial concept of Shicuo, incorporating courtyard greenery and semi-open spaces. Many Stone Villa structures often expose columns, forming semi-open outdoor spaces, providing convenient areas for fishing and agricultural activities. Inside the building, creating courtyards with greenery and semi-open spaces (enclosed by stone columns) to enrich the spatial experience."

2. Utilizing the distinctive windproof window openings of Shicuo, increasing facade diversity. Stone Villa features a design with various random small window openings to allow strong winds to pass through, preventing damage to walls and roofs while also harnessing wind energy resources to mitigate the heat. Continuing with square window designs to enhance the facade diversity.

3. Preserving the stone-based beam and column structure and layout, achieving a combination of aesthetics and stability. Stone Villa predominantly utilizes a beam and column structure, characterized by the placement of columns embedded within walls and partially exposed. Using a modern design language and optimizing material selection with a focus on stone, allowing the columns to be both load-bearing and aesthetically pleasing.
