TRAVEL

islands and inlets boasting charming beach resorts and jawdropping vistas. Hiking and cycling are enhanced by the natural beauty of the area. Rwanda is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa with a booming tourism sector that has seen the number of visitors double in the last decade.

Remarkable Rwanda

‘Rwanda is inspiring and for me it was truly a life-altering experience.’

Known as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda is a small landlocked country located in the Great Lakes region of eastcentral Africa. Only slightly bigger than the Kruger National Park in South Africa, Rwanda nonetheless offers achingly beautiful scenery and unique experiences such as Mountain gorilla trekking, vibrant cultural experiences, hiking, and lakeside relaxation together with birdwatching, classic game drives in national parks and nature walks.

‘Rwanda is special, different to all other African countries I have visited. Before visiting the country I thought I knew what to expect – but it was nothing like I imagined. Presumptions I had were tossed aside soon after arriving. I was humbled by the people, their demeanour and friendliness, especially after the horrors of the genocide became clearer after a visit to the memorial in the capital Kigal’. The highlight of a Rwandan safari is of course the mountain Gorillas! Treks to see the gorillas can last anywhere from 30 minutes to four hours depending on the location of the gorilla family allocated to your group. On the day expert guides give a pre-trek briefing on specific protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas. Porters

are available to help carry backpacks and cameras, as well as helping you with your footing. The trek is normally at altitudes between 2500 and 4000m.

www.icanholidays.com

The gorilla trek is a once in a lifetime experience that cannot be described in words – it has to be experienced first-hand. Another highlight of Rwanda is a visit to Nyungwe Forest – a montane forest well known for its primates, including chimpanzees, and a remarkable biodiversity of life. Over 75 mammal species, 300 species of birds, 120 butterfly species and over 100 varieties of orchids are found in the Nyungwe Forest. The canopy walk is a dizzying, suspended walkway which hangs above a steep, lush ravine. It is 60 meters high and 160 adrenaline pumping meters long.

Rwanda is still known for the genocide of 1994 where the people of the country turned on each other while the world stood by. This tragedy has inspired in Rwandans a spirit of reconciliation seen nowhere else on earth today, a spirit that is obvious in the people all over the country. Memorials to the genocide are scattered throughout the country, but this has not been allowed to control the destiny of the people of Rwanda.

Some travel facts for Rwanda: · Visas obtainable on arrival. · No Yellow Fever vaccination required. · Direct flights from Cape Town to Kigali. · Rwanda accommodation includes world class luxury lodges and stylish city hotels. · Transfers in Rwanda are usually conducted in 4X4 vehicles and helicopter flights from Kigali to the various areas are affordable.

Eastern Rwanda’s Akagera National Park with its open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamps and grassy low mountains is easily the most scenic savannah in East Africa. The park has undergone an incredible transformation in the past eight years and, with poaching now all but eliminated, lions and black rhino have been reintroduced. Lake Kivu, part of Africa’s dramatic rift valley, is a place of

Isibindi Launches New Zambezi River Property Isibindi Africa Lodges owns and operates four uniquely different lodges – Kosi Forest Lodge – a nature lover’s haven and Thonga Beach Lodge, both situated in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site; Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, the only privately owned lodge in Africa’s oldest game reserve the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park and most recently Tsowa Safari Island, 40km upstream from the world famous Victoria Falls in the Zambezi National Park, Zimbabwe. The mighty Zambezi river has captured the hearts and minds of explorers for centuries. Now modern-day explorers can experience the area’s many wonders from the shores of an exclusive island safari getaway. Tsowa Safari Island, located in the Zambezi National Park, is Isibindi Africa Lodges’ (Isibindi Africa) newest property and offers guests the chance to truly appreciate one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. The main camp with its stretch tents, feature a stylish lounge and dining area, with open sides that overlook the Zambezi. The spacious open areas are situated beneath massive Jackalberry trees where full advantage can be taken of two swimming pools by day and the sunken firepit by night. Guests can watch the river glide by or view the abundant wildlife from every vantage point. Tsowa Safari Lodge is an ideal spot from which to explore the area’s many attractions; morning game drives and guided walks in the Zambezi National Park, a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls and day trips to Chobe. Closer to camp sunset river cruises, canoeing, island walks and fishing, are on offer. While the island is remote, it’s surprisingly accessible and easy to get to, because it’s almost equi-distant from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Livingstone in Zambia, Kasane in Botswana and the Namibian border. With four lodges located in some of Southern Africa’s most pristine settings, Isibindi Africa Lodges pride themselves on partnering with the communities in which they work. Through their recently launched Isibindi Foundation, the group is involved in several community upliftment and conservation projects. The Foundation allows guests to be philanthropic travelers and to journey with purpose.

Welcome to Labotessa Hotel

Located on the historic Church Square in the heart of Cape Town, the brand-new LABOTESSA hotel harmoniously blends history and forward-thinking modern hotel trends. Opened on 15 August 2019, this intimate establishment is made up of six luxury signature suites and one grand, three-bedroom penthouse, the focus of which is on old-world elegance with all the bells and whistles of contemporary hotel living. Hoteliers Jan Fourie and Johan du Plessis were inspired by the beautiful circa 1700s building when conceiving the look, feel, and attitude of LABOTESSA. They drew on its heritage, while remaining cognizant of the needs of the discerning traveller, expectant of every amenity. High ceilings and generous proportions were cued by the site and are in keeping with the building’s inherent elegance. Finishes and furniture follow suit – a mix of modern and antique pieces, Calcatta marble, French oak floors, and Persian rugs continue the European-inspired but globally informed aesthetic. In the Signature Suites, a rich palette of colours is both modern and timeless; sophisticated and warm. No room is the same as the next. Carefully curated accessories like chandeliers, fireplaces, cosy armchairs, and custom-made designer furniture

create a layered, yet relaxed effect. Carefully selected contemporary artworks by rising Cape Town artists such as Pierre Fouche and Emma Aspeling complete the picture. The crowing glory is the palatial Governor’s Suite, named after Governor Simon Van der Stel, who was once a resident at this very address. This 300-square-metre space spans two floors at the top of the hotel and features a private plunge pool overlooking sweeping vistas of the historic heart of Cape Town. With one foot in the past and one firmly in the future, the understatedly glamorous hotel LABOTESSA makes a strong case for personal luxury experiences that bridge past and present, and balance the comforts of home with the best of luxury hotel living. www.labotessa.com
