William Kentridge commemorates the millions of Africans who fought in and lost their lives in the First World War, in The Head & the Load at Joburg Theatre. Friday Apr 21 to Saturday May 6.

As is his trademark style of theatremaking, the world-renowned artist uses music, dance, projections, mechanised sculptures and shadow to tell the largely unknown story of the role that Africa played in World War I. La Motte Millennium – Your go-to Red!

“A nuanced crimson red that presents a balance between warm and cool, assertive, but not aggressive, instead takes a ‘fist in a velvet glove’ approach”. This is but one of the various descriptions of Viva Magenta 18-1750, Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2023, that also beautifully applies to La Motte’s recently released 2020 Millennium.

A wine that will keep much longer, but that will most likely be enjoyed during 2023, the new vintage La Motte Millennium echoes some of the vigour and nuance of 2023’s exuberant colour – from the tone of its packaging to its tasting descriptors and emotive connotations. While it is the Malbec (12%) and Petit Verdot (3%) in the blend that contributes to the intensity of the wine’s colour, there is of course more to this popular red than its alluring shade in the glass. The classic blend consists predominantly of Merlot (50%) and Cabernet Franc (35%) offering aromatic dark berries and plum with nuances of fruit cake and a subtle toffee sweetness. Complex with barrel-derived spice and charred oak flavours, the wine is beautifully integrated and

A Semillion Story

The Old Road Wine Co. Single Vineyard Grand-mère Semillon tells the story of special old vines grown in rugged corners of the Franschhoek wine country. The fruit of these vines born in 1936, show the grace and tenacity exemplified by a family matriarch or grandmother. The wine is elegant and refined, with opulent pear, kumquat and citrus peel flavours, sweet exotic spice and a textured mouth-feel. The flavours evolve and persist from the entry onto the palate, with layers of succulent tropical fruit and candied citrus flavours unfolding. The welldefined fruit is balanced by mouth-watering acidity and a lingering minerality on the finish. The grapes used to make this wine were sourced from a very special, very old bush vine vineyard planted in 1936. It is a high-density planting of around 7 000 vines per hectare, more than double the amount of vines per hectare compared to the average vineyard in SA. It is a south-east facing vineyard, unirrigated and located at an altitude of 350m above sea level between growth and yields over the decades resulting in an excellent textured wine. METHOD

Prepare your glass by running a lime wedge around the rim of a martini glass. Dip the top of the glass into a plate sprinkled with sugar.

In a mixing glass, muddle the raspberries with the lime juice and simple syrup.

Add rum, tea cordial and lots of ice. Shake well and enjoy!!
