Backsberg New Look Join us at the Old Road Wine Co. and taste our new winter menu! Opening Hours: Monday: 10h00 - 18h00 Tuesday - Sunday: 10h00 - 20h00 Tel: 021 271 0379 Old Road Wine Co. Huguenot Road R45, Franschhoek *Closed on selected Public Holidays

Revitalised and reimagined, Backsberg has re-launched their brand, cellar and brand home. Now situated in Franschhoek, wine lovers can enjoy a refreshed portfolio of Backsberg wines from their new tasting facility, overlooking the majestic Mont Rochelle Mountain Range. The update of the Backsberg Brand was inspired by DGB acquiring a majority shareholding and the start of a new journey as ‘Backsberg Family Wines’ with Simon Back representing the family on the board. Paying homage to the original Backs wine label that was prominent prior to the 1970s, the new Backsberg logo focuses on embodying the brand values in a timeless design. Backberg’s new portfolio of wines includes three collections – Fifth Generation, Family Tree and Patriarch. In the Fifth Generation you’ll find nine predominantly single varietal wines, each named after a special and significant place on the farm. The Family Tree range for life’s special moments and The Patriarch – Backsberg Family Wines’ hero bottle of Cabernet Franc. The new tasting facility was built around an integral piece of history – a century year old tractor, which was transferred from the original estate. Vintage wine-making equipment owned by the Back family is on display, adding a museum-like element for visitors to enjoy. With an emphasis on sustainability, items from the farm such as barrels and wood chips have been repurposed to create lighting, furniture and design elements, fashioning a truly authentic look and feel to the new space. To complement your wine tasting experience, a selection of pairings, both sweet and savoury, as well as grazing-boards and picnics in the summer months are on offer. Open Wed-Sun 10h00-18h00 Backsberg Family Wines, Main Road R45, Franschhoek, 7690

At Dusk We Dine

Dusk is a new thought-provoking restaurant concept conceived by internationally awarded chef duo, Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin. Dismantling old conventions, Dusk is to be a space where the boundaries of fine dining are constantly challenged. The restaurant ambience, itself is dark and mysterious. One enters the dining room, through a dimly-lit corridor which opens into an intimate dining room set against the backdrop of an open kitchen. The only lighting is hung directly over the tables to emphasise the food and wine placed in front of you. The menu consists of four major pillars that define the ethos at Dusk: Produce, Time, People and Perfection.

Over the last six months, Callan and Darren have explored the countryside in search of the most unique ingredients, developing a tight network of local sustainable suppliers. They have unearthed some fascinating indigenous ingredients such as Kalahari truffles, wild pigs, and a variety of medicinal plants. Only the highest quality produce, farmed through ethical techniques and harvested at the height of their season, will prevail at Dusk. Produce will be placed on a pedestal, as Dusk aims to incorporate each supplier’s story. With a fascination for fermentation inspired by recent trips to Europe, the duo aim to harness the power of time in their experimentation with all kinds of fermentation and ageing processes. An array of lacto-fermented ingredients, garums, shoyus, pickles, vinegars, misos, cured meats, home-made cheeses and even their own wine and alcoholic concoctions will be featured. The ever-changing and evolving menu will highlight experimentation and discovery at the heart of every dish. The most integral pillar is “People”. Not only the guests, but the individuals who contribute their time and effort towards manifesting Dusk’s vision.

Dusk will set a precedent for a working environment that encourages growth in career opportunities and in a personal capacity, where staff are well looked-after and feel deeply connected with the creative concepts. The www.lifebrands.co.za

vision they share for Dusk is for the restaurant to become a space where the boundaries of the fine dining industry are challenged, and ultimately pushed aside. As partners, Darren and Callan are diving deeper into restaurant psychology and are developing procedures that will improve the working environment of a restaurant and everyone connected to it.

That is one of the reasons why Dusk will solely offer dinner service. Dusk will change the way the restaurant industry operates, putting their staff at the front of the cause. Darren knows only too well the toll that the conventional model of employment can take. The duo have been doing research on mental health for the past eight months now and have developed a mental health program for the restaurant group. Finally, Dusk is deeply rooted in Perfection and attention to detail. Callan and Darren are committed to learning from each other, their team, their experiences, and from their guests in order to incorporate their combined knowledge into the search for the elusive perfect meal. By the time guests leave, they will have formed an integral part of a culinary revolution which begins, but by no means concludes, at Dusk. LA MOTTE’S CLASSIC BLEND

La Motte is celebrating the release of its 2019 Bordeaux-inspired Millennium. The classic blend of predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Franc is prominent in some of the world’s most iconic wines and in the 2019 La Motte Millennium they offer aromatic dark berries and plum with nuances of fruit cake and toffee providing subtle sweetness. The Malbec and Petit Verdot contribute intensity in colour, hints of spice as well as complexity and depth to the blend. Barrel-derived spice and charred oak flavours are well integrated for a medium-bodied wine with soft, but lively tannins and a lingering berry aftertaste. Similar to its French cousins, the 2019 La Motte Millennium is a classic red blend that promises to mature beautifully. It responds very well to red meat and roasts of all kinds, it’s accommodating structure also allows for mild curried and hard cheese. It is exceptional with creamy sauces and the earthiness of mushrooms.

Steeped in history and tradition, La Rosière is dotted with charming traditional chalets and almost all the slopes have fabulous views of the dramatic mountainscapes. With its Alpine character, it is the perfect resort for families and offers childcare for kids from 4 months old. Due to its close proximity to Mont Blanc (the highest mountain in the Alps) and the Col de Petit Saint-Bernard Mountain pass, La Rosière guarantees a long ski season. VAL THORENS Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe (2,300m) and offers amazing snowfall with great skiing conditions until early April. It is part of the largest snow playground known as Les Trois Vallées, which has more than 600km of runs and enough space to ensure you never have to ski the same slope twice during a week’s holiday. And it is here you will find the modern Club Med Val Thorens Sensations. With its cutting-edge architecture and design, sleek and modern furniture and dynamic shades of pink and beige, Val Thorens is unlike any resort you’ve experienced before.
