FOOD & DRINK
Protégé has Opened its Doors Franschhoek, the food and wine capital of South Africa, has welcomed this exciting new eatery to the village, under the guidance of previous Eat Out Chef of the Year, La Colombe’s Scot Kirton.
Scot is proud to be part of the process of recognising young talented chefs and giving them the opportunity to put themselves on the map. In keeping with this, the restaurant is aptly named Protégé. Chef Stephen Raaff heads the kitchen team with Rebecca Warner overseeing the front-of-house; both being with the group for a number of years already. The menu is an à la carte offering from which guests are free to select as many or as few courses as they choose. Stephen works closely with local suppliers to keep the menu as fresh and as seasonal as possible. The freshest local produce is used in the simplest of ways. Dishes are characterized by a fusion of Asian and French cuisine and the pursuit of excellence and
perfection on each plate. Favourite dishes include edamame beans with sriracha, sesame; mussels with chilli, lemongrass and ginger; East coast crayfish Cape Malay style and beef fillet with bone marrow. The Korean fried chicken is already legendary! The restaurant space has been designed around the central show kitchen by Rotem Shachar and Megan Bond. Al fresco dining is available at both ends of the restaurant. Protégé completes the Le Quartier Français transformation that has been ongoing for the past year. The restaurant fills a much needed gap by offering a casual yet sublime dining experience. It looks set to become a place that the locals can call ‘home’. Breakfast from 07h30-10h00, lunch from 12h00- 14h00 and dinner from 18h00-20h30. www.protegerestaurant.co.za
Reuben Riffel Opens at the Valley of Life Reuben’s and Co Cafè, the latest restaurant in the impressive portfolio of acclaimed South African chef Reuben Riffel, has opened on Val de Vie Estate. The concept of Reuben’s and Co Cafè is based on seasonal, health-conscious dishes prepared with fresh ingredients grown organically on Val de Vie Estate and surrounding farms in the Franschhoek Valley. “I’m proud to be associated with Val de Vie Estate and see it as a natural fit for the expansion of my restaurants. The new restaurant will be a great addition to the existing, unrivalled Val de Vie offering and I look forward to residents and visitors enjoying great food in this spectacular setting – The Valley of Life.”
centre situated in the heart of Val de Vie estate, next to an Olympic sized outdoor pool, designed by Myrtha Pools and the first of its kind in South Africa. The Yard will also feature a 1000 m² gym which will be one of the largest private gyms in the country. Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director and Shareholder at Val de Vie Estate, remarked that: “The exponential growth of the estate has necessitated that a third lifestyle centre was opened, offering the families living on the estate an unrivalled environment to lead a healthy lifestyle.”
The interior of Reuben’s and Co Cafè is basked in natural light flowing through floor-to-ceiling windows and glass sliding doors. Wood, raw finishes, stone, textured surfaces, neutral pantones and greenery l complete the space which is set to become Val de Vie Estate’s flagship restaurant.
Val de Vie is French for ‘Valley of Life’ and the estate takes pride in its ranking as the Top Residential Estate in South Africa in 2015, 2016 and 2017, as rated by New World Wealth. The estate is home to The Valley restaurant, The Polo Club restaurant, the L’Huguenot Wine Cellar and array of world-class venues.

Experience ‘WOW’ at Holden Manz
The Franschhoek Kitchen at Holden Manz Wine Estate is launching a healthy and tasty new menu for the summer season. In addition to harvest platters, sumptuous riverside picnics and freshly grilled de-luxe Wagyu burgers, straight from the ex-army converted food truck, guests’ senses will be scintillated by Chef Christiaan Hellinger’s menu. Christiaan is a true son of Franschhoek having grown up with his parents on the Chamonix wine farm. He believes his passion for cooking began early in life being spoiled by his regular lunches and dinners cooked by Marjot Janse at Le Quartier Francais. As a youngster his first introduction to the kitchen was working for Craig at Roca which sparked his culinary obsession. Over the last four years Christiaan has undertaken a global exploration to satisfy his hunger for culinary stimulation. Visits to Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Philippines ensured a broad experience of different Asian cuisines. A
short stint in Central America allowed an appreciation of Mexican focused cooking before a season as chef onboard a super yacht in the Mediterranean and at the leading Dutch restaurant, Die Libraije, with its 3 Michelin stars.
Christiaan is joined in the kitchen by Christo Liebenberg who recently joined from Eat Out nominated Chef’s Warehouse @ Maison and previously worked for Darren Badenhorst. Building on Christiaan and Christo’s combined cooking experiences this new á la carte menu explores the combinations of texture, flavour and appearance to ensure our guests enjoy the natural beauty of our vineyard setting, fantastic awardwinning wines and the freshness of our local ingredients. The new menu highlights vegetables in season, introduces a number of healthy salads, incorporates fresh fish from our oceans and hand-reared beef from Paarl. Christiaan’s favourite dish on the new menu is a grilled Karoo lamb rump with charred seasonal greens and a soft polenta cream and Christo’s is a light summery Franschhoek trout tartare.
New Delight at Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant Expect a fresh interpretation to the acclaimed wine and food experience on Franschhoek-based La Motte Wine Estate. Lunch at Pierneef à La Motte treats guests to a sophisticated À La Carte Menu within the restaurant’s elegant ambience, beautifully embraced by tranquil gardens. Chef Bulpitt’s selection of starters, mains and desserts changes with the season and the menu represents seasonal and sustainable, locally-sourced artisan ingredients. All dishes come with wine suggestions from an award-winning wine list offering both current and older vintages of La Motte, an interesting selection of other South African and international wines as well as an exceptional representation of Franschhoek Méthode Cap Classique wines. Welcoming guests to its culture of sharing, the Garden Menu is a brand new addition to the Pierneef à La Motte

offering. Guests are invited to enjoy this more relaxed dining experience under the estate’s majestic oak trees during warmer weather, from October to Easter. Expect unique South African tastes such as flavoursome Cape curries, mosbolletjies, biltong, curry lamb kebabs, cinnamon pancakes and all those interesting combinations of sweet, sour and savoury, presented with Chef Eric’s innovative touch. The menu offers guests a selection of smaller plates to enjoy with La Motte wines. Moët & Chandon open the South African Festive Season in Style!
WE CHATTED TO PATRICK LESLIE, MOËT HENNESSY CHAMPAGNE PORTFOLIO MANAGER, ABOUT THE MAGNIFICENT MOËT & CHANDON GOLDEN TREE AND ALL THINGS CHAMPAGNE… Q: This year the Silo District at the V&A was home to the spectacular Moët & Chandon Golden Tree. Tell us about the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree Lighting Ceremony, it sounds magnificent! A: We are delighted to have brought the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree to the Silo District again this year. The Lighting Ceremony was a fitting celebration of our incredible festive installation, with performances by the acclaimed South African Youth Choir and the Cape Town City Ballet. Once the sun had set, visitors were treated to an impressive lighting display, with the 230 meters of LED lights individually programmed to illuminate in sync with festive music. Q: What sets the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree apart from other beautiful Christmas Tree installations worldwide? A: There are spectacular Christmas Trees to be seen all around the world, like the porcelain tree in Belgium and the impressive floating tree in Brazil, but we believe none are as awe-inspiring as Cape Town’s grand Moët & Chandon Golden Tree, which we created entirely from recycled champagne bottles. The Golden Tree is an impressive four storeys high and was built with over 1800 champagne bottles collected from all over South Africa. It is wrapped in a shimmering gold ribbon created using over 2000 discs, so it’s impressive day and night. Q: The Moët & Chandon Golden Tree is sure to be a festive favourite for visitors to the V&A. Will it become an annual event? A: Epitomising warmth, generosity and grandeur, there is no doubt the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree has become synonymous with the opening of the festive season in South Africa. Moët & Chandon is known as the champagne of celebration globally, so what better way to share festive joy with everyone visiting the V&A Waterfront over the season. Capetonians and their visitors can visit the tree until the 6th of January 2019. Q: Before we finish, we need to settle the debate over which I am sure many a friendship has been tarnished… the pronunciation of our favourite champagne. Please clarify this for everybody; Mo-wett or Mo-way? A: This is something I get asked all the time! The correct pronunciation of Moët is an age-old question that has sparked debate across dinner tables amongst friends, champagne aficionados across the globe and even garners attention on prime-time radio shows and trends in the ‘Twittersphere’! So it’s definitely time we set the record straight once and for all ... the correct pronunciation is ‘Mo-Wett’, not ‘Mo-Way’! So if anyone should ask you as you offer them a glass of “Mo-Wett”, you can now happily inform them that you are indeed pronouncing your favourite champagne correctly! Indeed, the winery’s founder Claude Moët was of Dutch heritage, which is why it’s pronounced ‘Mo-Wett’, not ‘MoWay’. So now you know! Q: Moët & Chandon is referred to as the world’s most loved champagne; do you think this is because of the Maison’s association with celebration? A: I do, yes. We believe that after 270 years of celebrating life’s memorable moments, there is no better way to honour one’s achievements and successes, than with a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne. With a bottle of our champagne opened every second around the globe, Moët & Chandon knows that every second is an experience, and every experience is a Moët Moment to live and celebrate! Q: And of course, what better season to celebrate! A: Precisely! Moët & Chandon opened what is sure to be a memorable festive season, magnificently!

Born to Retail
Mother and daughter, Patricia Eccles and Georgia Eccles Schoeman, have become mainstays of the Franschhoek retail scene over the last twelve years. Their shops Peacock Blue and Indian Summer started as a single business. Six years ago they split the businesses into separate legal entities with Patricia taking sole control of the menswear in Peacock Blue and Georgia looking after the ladies at Indian Summer. Though separate businesses they still co-operate closely. Both have outlets in Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Newlands, usually next door to one another. Over the years Patricia’s Peacock Blue has developed its own brand of shirts, shorts, swimwear, knitwear and shoes. Most of these are manufactured in Cape Town. Peacock Blue is also a major outlet for Polo South Africa and Scotch & Soda from Amsterdam. They import a number of brands from Italy, including belts, bags, chinos and jeans. In addition it is well known internationally for its linen shirts and carries probably the widest range of shorts that you will find in the Cape. Indian Summer, Georgia’s ladies’ outlets, combine an eclectic mix of locally sourced Cape Town brands with some carefully curated imported labels. Indian Summer is well known as being the right place to find that gorgeous ensemble for a very special occasion. It could be said that Patricia and Georgia were born to retail. Patricia is a fifth-generation retailer making Georgia the sixth generation! Patricia has had shops for over thirty years, starting in Cambridge then Bath, London and Singapore before Franschhoek. Georgia started her retail apprenticeship in her mother’s Cambridge tearooms before she was ten.

Anthony Harris and Gerhard Swart have been collaborating for decades as “Ceramic Matters”. They live and work in Wellington but are internationally recognised as some of the finest artist/potters working in the world today. In this wonderful exhibition “Deadly Sins” they have made separate and very different bodies of work with a common thread of homoeroticism running through the show. Harris’ black on white vessels are elegant and edgy whilst Swart’s exuberant pop inspired works are bright, sly and often very funny. This is a select and fine exhibition of two artists working at the height of their (considerable) powers. Trent Read
