Wine Wednesdays at Boschendal

FOOD & DRINK

Offering respite from the work week, the newly launched Wine Wednesdays at The Werf Bar, hero a different estate wine each week. Newly refurbished, this sumptuous space with its 14 metre tufted velvet banquette, fringed lounge chairs and marble top bar is the perfect backdrop. Hosted by Boschendal’s cellar masters and sommelier Wayve Kolevsohn, patrons can expect an evening as educational as it is entertaining. For those feeling more adventurous, a farm-style cocktail, prepared in a copper shaker and served in a traditional preserve jar is sure to excite! Having recently taken home the Woolworths Sustainability Award at the prestigious Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, The Werf Restaurant’s dishes continue to delight, each a considered collaboration with nature. With the estate’s hectares of fresh fruit and vegetables and free-range, pasture fed livestock at executive chef, Christiaan Campbell’s disposal, the farm-to-table dining philosophy he is renowned for is realized in new, imaginative ways. This season, diners can expect flavours of roasted parsnips and ginger glazed turnips; beef shin marmalade and semolina mousse. For bookings, email werf@boschendal.co.za

Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo Cape Town 2019

The game, the champagne and the colour match! The prestigious Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo Cape Town will return to Val de Vie Estate on 2 March 2019. Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Paarl-Franschhoek mountains, this stylish sporting and social event marks the peak of the South African polo season.

The ninth annual event, a highlight on the Western Cape calendar, will focus on the sport that has shown a sharp rise in popularity and skill in Africa over the past few years. It is expected that more than 3000 prestigious guests, many from neighbouring countries and provinces, will pay homage to the high-speed, high-skill game of polo while sipping Veuve Clicquot and celebrating summer. What’s new at the 2019 event is the extension of the VIP area where guests will have the opportunity to track the live polo match on oversized screens and remain engaged with the game. Colour has always been at the heart of Veuve Clicquot and is a source of the champagne’s creativity and

inspiration. It was in 1816 that Madame Clicquot developed the first riddling table designed to guarantee a crystal-clear wine and thus enhance the purity of colour of her champagne. She also created the first blended rosè in order to create a more intense colour and taste. This is the inspiration behind 2019’s “Colourama” theme that promises several artistic interpretations of the Veuve Clicquot heritage and a live fashion experience against the background of the game. In line with Veuve Clicquot polo matches in New York and Los Angeles, the spotlight is on understated but elegant daywear in chic colour blocking ranging from

sunburst yellow to blush-pink. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for the much-anticipated divot-stomping during half time of the polo match. This year ‘Best Dressed’ falls away, conforming with the international celebration of polo with focus on the game, social and business networking and the Veuve Clicquot lifestyle experience. The day will also begin earlier to allow guests to make their way to after-party venues in surrounding towns. Renowned as one of the best polo events in the world, the 2019 Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo will be attended by influencers, thought-leaders and VIPs from across the African Continent.

EVENT DETAILS DATE: Saturday 2 March 2019 | TIME: 14h00-19h00 | VENUE: Val de Vie Estate (Paarl-Franschhoek Valley) | THEME: Colourama NB: This event is not open to persons under the age of 18 years. ART

RECENT OIL PAINTINGS BY SASHA HARTSLIEF 23 February – 18 March 2019 Sasha Hartslief was born in 1974 in Gauteng. At the age of seventeen, she came to Cape Town to study English and Philosophy at UCT. Passionate about drawing from an early age, she is largely self-taught, closely observing other artists and avidly reading up on technique. Hartslief had always been passionate about drawing, but the desire to become an artist only crystallized into a decision in 1995, when she enrolled at Cape College under the tutelage of Elizabeth Gunter. Her subjects are often viewed from a philosophical, deeply personal perspective, resulting in striking works that are emotionally charged, pensive in mood and considered in composition. Her subtle investigations into the human condition via the underbelly of Cape Town life somehow strike a chord with us. "I defer to the classical Masters for inspiration," says Sasha Hartslief, who admits to placing images painted by the 19th century American Impressionist, John Singer Sargent, next to her easel while she paints. Her muses include the 19th century neo-classicist, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whose draughtsmanship and linear dexterity provide formal inspiration for her works. But Hartslief's brushstrokes are more diffuse than the precise, stylized techniques of the neo-classicists. Like the 19th century French Impressionists, she uses brushstrokes to evoke the transience of light, colour and movement. And like her Renaissance and Impressionist forebears, she employs everyday visual devices to explore the way in which atmospheric light and tonal modulations inform a surface, and to evoke atmospheres fraught with symbolic subtexts. But the transience of the captured moment is counterbalanced by the disciplined rigour of Hartslief's technique and painterly process. She says she is "obsessively skills-driven and consumed" by her work. Each image becomes a formal study in light, contour and line. Hartslief's experimentation with chiaroscuro techniques derives inspiration from the works by 17th century Baroque masters such as Rembrandt who, through the buildup of impasto paint, evoked light and shadow in his portraits as a psychological device, similar to the way in which stage-lighting functions in the theatre. Often seeming to be lit from below, the expressive shading in Hartslief's portraits tends to converge around the facial hollows, giving the paintings a spatial as well as emotional depth. The eyes of the women in her portraits, in particular, seem inwardly focused. Please join us for the opening of “Recent Oil Paintings” by Sasha Hartslief at 11h00 at Everard Read Franschhoek. Gallery hours: 9:30 – 17:30 | Entry: Complimentary For more information or a catalogue preview please contact Karla Benade +27 21 876 2446 | fgallery@everard.co.za | www.everard-read-franschhoek.co.za Left (detail): White Tablecolth, 2019, oil on canvas.

Portrait of an Artist – Lisette Forsyth

Born in Namibia, Lisette has worked in many fields all over Europe and Australia before coming home and setting up her own studio in Woodstock. Her body of work: GESTATION There is an echo of an infant memory of Himba women, with strong capable hands and sculpted hair. These hidden but stored emotions implanted a respect for the work that women (and men) do in Africa. OBJECTIFICATION Years as an objectified model demonstrated that beauty is more than skin deep. IDENTIFICATION The working-class areas of cape town and what the people did there to survive became the source of inspiration. Out of this came three exhibitions: “A Means to an End” – a comment on the long running problem of a minimum wage. “An Honest Day’s Work’– a celebration artisans. ‘Love thy Neighbour’ – superimposed warm, individual portraits of workers and denizens of the urban sprawl on the cold, hard information of contemporary

12

documents. This resulted in a dialogue, between the people illustrated in the works, the authoritarian rules and procedures, as well as between the finished pictures and the viewer. TRANSMUTATION The major pursuit of alchemists for millennia was the transmutation of base metals, (lead and tin) into noble metals such as silver or gold. This concept underpins the current work for which discarded materials of modern work are transmuted into artefacts with a powerful appeal to current artistic sensibilities. IDENTIFICATION An up-coming solo exhibition will feature the painful subject of land. “South Africa belongs to all who live in it” was the dream but now land is the ultimate issue and the great divide. Lisette has signed with the Holden Manz collection, Franschhoek since April 2014 where her works can be viewed daily. www.manzart.com

A special highlight on board is the two-storey, lightflooded library with over 6,000 books. There is the Cunard Royal Spa & Fitness Centre which boasts modern fitness equipment and personal trainers while the Mareel Wellness and Beauty spa guarantees relaxation of the highest quality. Watercolour classes, a book club, knitting club, a state-of-the-art Computer Centre, cinema, a real British pub with karaoke evenings and plenty of live shows and of course the glamorous decorated ballroom ensure night times are just as lively as the day. Guests can even try their luck in the Empire Casino with roulette, blackjack or at one of the numerous slot machines. Cunard Line is also known for its cuisine with plenty of restaurants available and of course afternoon tea is a must. A cruise on the Queen Elizabeth is a chance to step back into the glamorous hey-day of cruising. All cabins are classically furnished. The Grand Lobby displays the extravagance of the ship with a dramatic staircase, a ship mural and a chandelier. The Queen Elizabeth combines classic style with modern technology. The opulent Art Deco décor, the use of the finest materials, as well as numerous pieces of art, all reminiscent of yesteryear. And if that is not enough, the ship is captained by Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge, the first female ship captain to work for Cunard Line Cunard invites you to discover a selection of extraordinary adventures across the globe. www.cunard.com
