Exciting New Lunch Menu at Le Petit Manoir Chef Cameron Smith has joined the team at Le Petit Manoir as Executive Head Chef.

Previously part of the La Colombe family for over five years, Cameron worked in three of their five restaurants. When the time came to set out on a new venture, his main goal was to find a kitchen and a team where he could take his experience and put his own signature on it. The smaller kitchen team Le Petit Manoir together with the front of house team, work in symmetry to achieve the same goals. “From the moment I walked through the doors of Le Petit Manoir – it was exactly what I had been seeking, instantly I could see the potential! The front of house team is friendly, the kitchen team is hard working and the owners are hands on, helpful and easy to approach. All of this made my decision to be a part of the Le Petit Manoir team very easy!” Cameron’s passion and love for street food, has inspired the new menu offerings. The idea behind the new lunch menu is taking basic street-like dishes and refining those dishes into something elegant with a touch of Franschhoek charm. The new menu is Simple and fun cuisine that aims to excite the eyes as well as the taste buds! Small plate dishes such as Spicy Korean glazed chicken wings, sesame seeds served with a Gorgonzola mousse, Tuna Tartar, pickled ginger, burnt lime dressing, basil salsa verde, with lime & garlic or seared Springbok Carpaccio, burnt orange marmalade, goats cheese mousse served with naan bread, dukkah spice & micro green salad are just a few examples of what to expect. Mains include steamed mussels, tom-yum velouté and pickled ginger and for meat-lovers, a 300g beef picanha, garlic roasted hassleback potatoes with smoked garlic velouté. You will not want to miss the dessert selection with offers such as coconut and lemongrass panna cotta, mango purée, pineapple & mango salsa, burnt meringue & lemongrass foam and trio of dark chocolate, seasonal cherries & berry gel served with fruit cake that will have you swooning! There is also an impressive cocktail menu and many other surprises along the way! Bookings 021 876 2110 | restaurant@lepetitmanoir.co.za

Gourmet Popcorn & Wine Tasting Popping onto the Old Road Wine Co. Scene

Over the past few months, The team at the Old Road Wine Co. have been hard at work developing a brand new experience that is gourmet in taste and most importantly, caters to all – including our vegetarian and vegan visitors. Working closely with local artisanal popcorn producer Guzzle and Wolf to create custom-made popcorn flavours that highlight the intricate aromas and flavour profiles in each carefully selected Old Road Wine Co. wine while also offering a light and delectable snack. The Guzzle & Wolf range delivers on flavour with less guilt, as the popcorn is made with fresh herbs and mainly locally sourced products. The tasting is ideal for anyone wanting an informative and fun activity and is best enjoyed on the outdoor Anemos Deck which boasts a scenic view of the Franschhoek Mountains and surrounding vineyards. The Gourmet Popcorn and Wine Tasting consist of 4 Old Road Wine Co. wines and 4 popped concoctions. The popcorn is designed to be a complement to our premium wine, and thus, it is not sweet but rather subtle in flavour – moving away from a movie time treat to a somewhat surprising but always inspirational taste combination. Experience the four following sip and snack sensations: 1. Juliette Sauvignon Blanc paired with Lemon and Thyme Gourmet Popcorn: As a lively wine, our Sauvignon Blanc brims with crushed pineapple and soft tropical notes of white peaches and pear on the nose. The Lemon and Thyme gourmet popcorn pairing helps highlight the zest of the wine, while the thyme accentuates the classic herbaceousness for which Sauvignon Blanc is adored.

T R A N Q U I L I T Y

2. Pardonnez-Moi Cinsaut paired with Cherry Gourmet Popcorn: Cinsaut is well loved for its perfumed nose, packed with juicy red berry fruit – in particularly wild cherries. Our Cherry gourmet popcorn accompaniment shows off the cherry perfume and complements the gentle silkiness on the palate. 3. The Spotted Hound Red Blend paired with Turkish Delight Gourmet Popcorn: This unconventional blend of Sangiovese, Shiraz, Petite Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsaut and Malbec is full-flavoured, showing off a generous palate that is infused with red berries, Turkish delight and dried floral spice on the aftertaste. The Turkish Delight gourmet popcorn picks up on the palate, offering endless enjoyment. 4. The Butcher And Cleaver Cape Blend paired with Cinnamon and Pretzel Gourmet Popcorn: As a Cape Blend, the leading variety in this wine is Pinotage. Typically, Pinotage is a big, bold and beautifully expressive wine with robust flavours of dark fruit and cinnamon. Our Cinnamon and Pretzel gourmet popcorn pairs perfectly, highlighting the spice on the nose with added salinity from the salt to act as a palate cleanser from the tannins. The Old Road Wine Co. is now an official stop on the popular Franschhoek Wine Tram, and we welcome all walk-ins looking for a wine tasting experience with a difference. www.oldroadwinecompany.com

Grande Provence Launches First Merlot Grande Provence, the landmark Franschhoek heritage wine estate, has given Merlot its rightful place with the launch of a new single varietal wine offering. Having earned its stripes as a key component in the formidable Grande Provence Bordeaux-style flagship blend, Merlot now stands tall as a varietal wine in the premium range. “Our Grande Provence Merlot started out as part of the blend of The Grande Provence Red, and is still a definitive variety of this signature wine. With its fruit purity, its elegance and complexity, it has evolved into an elegant, standalone wine in our portfolio,” says winemaker Thys Smit. Thys took on the leading role as winemaker and viticulturist at Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in 2018 after having joined the cellar team in 2015 as assistant winemaker. In 2019 he was nominated as a finalist for two Grande Provence white wines in the Young Winemaker of the Year Awards. The youthful, yet classic Grande Provence Merlot 2018 was crafted from high-lying vineyards in the famous ‘golden triangle’ in the Helderberg region, home to some of the finest Stellenbosch reds. The Grande Provence Merlot shows wonderful intensity. Expect an earthy array of vibrant dark cherries and raspberries with hints of wild herbs, tomato leaf and dark chocolate enlivened by touches of cinnamon, cloves and orange peel. Soft and subtle, this smooth, medium bodied wine is best enjoyed with herb-crusted lamb and rich meat dishes. It is very approachable in its youth and will reward even more with careful cellaring. Grande Provence Merlot 2018 sells at the cellar door at R170 per bottle. For added convenience, the wine can be purchased online from shop.grandeprovence.co.za

Art Tourism Comes to Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch will once again be a hub of creativity and art as the city gears up for one of the biggest art events in the Western Cape: the Stellenbosch Triennale. During this event, that takes place from February to April 2020, artists from all over the continent will showcase their oeuvres in four different exhibitions around town. Fusing the disciplines of the performing arts with contemporary art, the Stellenbosch Triennale 2020 promises masterpieces aplenty with spaces to escape into and explore. The Triennale isn’t the only time that Stellenbosch celebrates and showcases creativity and art. Throughout the year, Stellenbosch is a visual city with a multitude of sights and experiences for art tourists. As one of the oldest university towns in South Africa, Stellenbosch is renowned for its halls of academia and winemaking excellence. Luring travellers from around the world, the streets of Stellenbosch are abundant in knowledge, ideas and inspiration year-round. From pop up exhibitions and a variety of art galleries to some of the best-preserved Cape Dutch buildings in the Western Cape, there is no shortage of artistic expression in this town. www.franschhoeklife.co.za

A visit to the Rupert Museum and Dorpstaat Gallery are great starting point for first-time visitors who want to explore the artistic side of the city, as well as The Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden and The Gallery of the University of Stellenbosch (GUS). Numerous wine farms in the region are great stops for art buffs as these often double as exhibition spaces for some of the finest collections of African and international art. A mere 40-minute drive from Cape Town International Airport, Stellenbosch is the perfect destination for curated conversations connecting the past, present and future using art as the catalyst. La bohème

Impoverished but inspired, Puccini’s young Bohemians make art, quarrel, make up, break up, and make believe that there will always be another tomorrow – never imagining that their frail friend Mimi will not live to see the final days of summer. Matthew Wild’s innovative production, which premiered to widespread critical claim in Switzerland in 2018, comes to Cape Town. Told as flashbacks of the elderly painter Marcello, the production movingly contrasts the impetuousness of youth with the regrets of old age. Filled with Giacomo Puccini’s soaring melodies, this production stars tenor Galeano Salas alongside returning South Africans Sarah-Jane Brandon, William Berger, Thesele Kemane, CTO’s Brittany Smith and Luvo Rasemeni and features unexpected contributions from muchloved Cape Town singers Aviva Pelham and Brad Liebl. Jeremy Silver conducts the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra with set design by Kathrin Frosch, costume design by Ingo Krügler, lighting design by Kobus Rossouw and choreography by Louisa Talbot. The powerful Cape Town Opera chorus is joined by the vibrant ERUB Children’s Choir. ‘THE DIRECTING TEAM TRANSLATES ITS INTERPRETATION WITH EXCITING GIMMICKS AND IMPRESSIVE CONSISTENCY AND CLARITY, WITHOUT EVER FORGETTING WHO IS ACTUALLY IN THE CENTER: PUCCINI AND HIS MUSIC.’ – BERNER ZEITUNG IN COLLABORATION WITH KONZERT THEATER BERN TICKET PRICES R150 – R325 BOOK THROUGH COMPUTICKET Sponsored by Business & Arts South Africa, the City of Cape Town, National Lotteries Commission, the Rupert Music Foundation, Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

Fidelio

Fidelio, Ludwig van Beethoven’s sole opera, speaks passionately about the composer’s deeply held beliefs about freedom and liberty – views that would be further underscored in the composer’s Ninth Symphony, with its choral finale set to Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy”. Fidelio tells the story of a young woman, Leonora/Fidelio, who goes undercover as a young male prison warden where her husband, Florestan, is unjustly being kept prisoner. Fidelio’s plan is to find a way to – somehow – free her husband. The opera is based (admittedly loosely) on a true story known to Beethoven’s librettist. With its stirring choruses and soaring vocal ensemble music, Fidelio is a perfect opera for a performance in concert. This production is being performed in honour of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, as well as in commemoration of South Africa’s Human Rights Day. Fidelio and its message of freedom was first performed in 2004 to mark the 10th anniversary of a democratic South Africa by Cape Town Opera in the actual exercise yard of the Robben Island prison. Johanni van Oostrum will sing her first Leonore, Mandisinde Mbuyazwe appears as prison governor Don Pizzaro, and Brittany Smith sings the role of Marzelline. Amy Jephta has written new narrations especially for this production, and Maestro Jeremy Silver will conduct the Cape Town Philharmonic in this vast work. TICKET PRICES R100 – R280 BOOK THROUGH COMPUTICKET Sponsored by the City of Cape Town, Business & Arts South Africa and the Rupert Music Foundation

GO GOLD The Mont Rochelle Chardonnay expresses the true reflection of the Mont Rochelle terroir. The block of Chardonnay was the first vineyard planted on the farm in 1994, and has been producing world class wines since its first vintage with both the Mont Rochelle and MIKO Chardonnays finding their origins here. Made in a slightly oxidative, European style of Chardonnay. Pale straw in colour with golden hues and displays butterscotch, marzipan and lemon curd like characteristics on the nose. There are hints of citrus and stone fruit on the palate which is refreshingly long and angular on the finish. www.virginlimitededition.com/en/mont-rochelle

Arts Making Social Impact

LIFESTYLE & ART

Celebrating the Love of Art

How can an arts-based idea address a pressing social challenge creatively? How can creative thinking influence, affect, or simply make us more aware of societal conditions, in our world today? How can art start a conversation? How can art ignite a vigorous debate? How can art even present a workable solution? How can art show a way to make an impact in the age of the Anthropocene? All of the above are positive intentions towards making social impact count, making social impact central, and making social impact the driving force, in arts-based practices in South Africa.

A PERSONAL SELECTION BY HANNELI RUPERT-KOEGELENBERG As part of the fiftieth jubilee of La Motte’s Rupert ownership, owner Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg invites art-lovers to an exhibition of rare and important artworks that shares some favourite works from her collection and allows insight into her as a collector. The exhibition, entitled Celebrating the love of Art – a personal selection by Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg, acknowledges her appreciation of the arts and their preservation, a passion she shares with her late parents, Dr Anton and Mrs Huberte Rupert.

The Rupert Art Foundation and the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch have launched the Social Impact Arts Prize 2020, calling for great creative ideas, driven by precisely these same questions. The awarded project will be installed in the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern-Cape. From the 7th of March 2020, the finalists’ projects will be exhibited in the Rupert Museum, while the awarded projects will be announced at a free gala event, everyone is invited, on Thursday the 12th of March 2020.

Significant private art collections emanate from a lifelong interest in certain artists, genres and specific works. Collectors, therefore, play an important role in the safeguarding of art and by sharing it outside private collections, demonstrate a real understanding of art.

All the finalists’ work will also be exhibited in Graaff-Reinet at the Jan Rupert Art Centre from April 2020. So, if you live in the district, you will also get a chance to see all the entries which the panel of esteemed international judges voted as finalists.

Celebrating the love of Art – a personal selection by Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg opens in the La Motte Museum on 25 January 2020 and features Hanneli’s selection of works with special personal meaning and remembrance.

Keep watching the media for the announcement of the official opening of the finished project in July 2020. Then make an occasion for a road trip or a weekend visit, to the fourth oldest town in South Africa, and be inspired by the friendly people, the breathtaking beauty of mother nature in and around the Valley of Desolation. Walk the streets and not only revel in the architecture of the town, but also now, take pictures of trailblazing art leading the way. Imagine what your creativity can do, develop your big ideas and start making a change in your own life.

The exhibition includes, amongst others, works by Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser, Jean Welz and Cecil Higgs from the Rupert Art Foundation and individual family collections. To show a bigger selection, works will be rotated during the year-long display. Exhibition info: VENUE: La Motte Museum, La Motte Wine Estate OPENING: 25 January 2020 (runs for the duration of 2020) HOURS: Tuesdays to Sundays: 09h00-17h00 (For winter hours: www.la-motte.com) Closed on Christian Religious holidays.
