Celebrate the Lifting of the Wine Sales Ban WITH HOLDEN MANZ

For the third time in 12 months we have been banned from selling our principal product – finally lifted on1 February 2021. Indeed it is 20 weeks of being prevented from selling wine. This has had a massive impact on the continued viability of the role of Franschhoek as a beacon of wine tourism. Imagine Franschhoek with no wine farms? It is not only the financial impact which is crippling but vines continue to grow 365 days a year and cellars only have so much space – indeed there is only a limited amount of warehouse space to store bottled wine. Nearly 400 million litres of wine are unsold as a result of these bans. This will take years to work through. Have a thought for the toll on the mental and financial health of owners, winemakers, vineyard staff, tasting room employees without work and those responsible for selling wine to restaurants and wine shops. At Holden Manz we have been running a programme of Zoom tastings with customers in our overseas markets in a bid to increase export demand. Nearer to home we have been offering a series of daily wine specials to our loyal customer base with delivery when Uncle Cyril allows it. This show of support has generated much needed cash to pay salaries and suppliers which peak as we move into harvest season. We are extending this to our neighbours in Franschhoek with an offer of 20% off during February to celebrate the fact that we can open our tasting room 7 days a week once again and we can welcome you to Holden Manz once more. Logon to our webshop via holdenmanz.com and use FRANSCHHOEK20 to benefit from this special deal.

INDULGE IN A DELICIOUS DAY OUT AT NEDERBURG

The open-air picnic on the lush lawn surrounding The Manor, offered at R460 per basket, features a selection of local cheeses and charcuterie to start, accompanied by olives, pickles, nuts and hummus, with freshly-baked bread rolls. FOOD & WINE

Utterly Smitten in Franschhoek

Franschhoeks’ main street has just been given an upgrade with the addition of the newest kid on the block – Smitten in Franschhoek. Born out of a shared passion for food, Smitten is the love child of executive chef Chris Smit and partner Imraan Vagar. Chris’s food passion stems from his youth with many happy hours spent among the simple, tasty delights of a farm-style kitchen. Family secrets in the form of tried-and-trusted recipes were passed down from his grandmother to his mother – and later to an utterly fascinated Chris. A culinary career was marked in his stars but counting international celebrities that he has since fed, is still a “pinch me” reality for Chris.

surname, “Smit”, as well as on their love story.

After following the time-honoured path from waiter to general manager, Chris found himself at the Royal Malewane, where he catered for discerning guests from all over the world.

With a dramatic overhaul and redesign, it is now home to the stylish bistro, deli, bakery and bar concept that is the Smitten of today.

The next major milestone in his career saw Chris being appointed as the executive chef at La Residence in the Franschhoek Valley. Some of the diners who have enjoyed his fare have included Elizabeth Hurley, Arun Nayar, Sir Elton John and David Furnish, Embeth Davies, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, heads of state such as Thabo Mbeki, Bill Clinton and our beloved Madiba. Although an impressive list, Chris extends the same hospitality to each and every guest who sits at his table. Both Chris and Imraan are no strangers to celebrity, Chris has hosted two television food series, “Geure Uit Die Vallei” on SABC2 and “Cooking With Chris Smit” on SABC3 while, Imraan cut his teeth in presenting and broadcasting as part of a television production house – Red Carpet Productions. The couple fell in love 14 years ago and so began their “Food Affair”. Smitten, the restaurant, has been over 10 years in the making. The name is a wordplay on Chef Chris’

After searching for years to find suitable premises, a pop-up restaurant and MCC bar concept at the local Franschhoek Village Market in 2013, was just the right platform to test their product. A few years later Red Carpet Productions acquired new commercial spaces centrally located at The Yard, in the heart of Franschhoek.

Serving refreshingly honest and simple dishes with clean flavours from seasonal ingredients and local produce set in plush surroundings. The focal point of the Smitten gallery area will be a statement bar, with a gorgeous, gravitydefying overhead canopy of floating bottles, that will serve colourfully decadent cocktails and mocktails, designer gins, quality local wines and the entire range of Graham Beck bubblies (their favourite MCC producer). The hope is to create a “Magic Hour”, to rekindle the lost art of the aperitif. Much like the delightful Italian “Aperitivo” concept, Smitten will roll out bite-sized accompaniments to the cocktails and drinks, with special MCC and cocktail food pairings – all set to the soundtrack of light jazz, clinking glasses, popping champagne corks and, of course, laughter. For Chris and Imraan the magic of a meal goes beyond a fleeting pleasure of the palate. They hold a deep conviction that food can succeed where words fail. www.facebook.com/SmittenInFranschhoek

Hari Opens at Topiary Wine Estate

Sommelier Munashe Kwaramba has opened Hari, an Afro-fusion eatery at Topiary, a beautifully located boutique winery producing Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon just outside Franschhoek. Born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, Munashe left home in 2014 at age 18 to do a Diploma in Electrical Engineering at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town. His first holiday job was at Grand Provence where his love affair with wine began. As a sommelier-in-training Munashe interned at a number of excellent restaurants, notably at La Colombe with Joseph Dhafana, and in 2017 the South African Sommelier Association named him as one of the top ten best young sommeliers in South Africa. Starting as a runner at Grand Provence, he learnt fast and he cites Darren Badenhorst, (executive chef at The Restaurant at Grande Provence at the time), as one of his greatest mentors. In 2017, Munashe joined Badenhorst in his new venture, as head wine sommelier. With an impressive pedigree as a member of the Black Cellar Club (Blacc), a judge on Rosé Rocks competition and his own fledgling wine label – The Global Sip (made from grapes sourced in Franschhoek), this man is going places! He also has a food truck serving Mexican style food stationed at the Saturday morning market in Franschhoek.

4

The name Hari, (which is the traditional clay pot used in most rural kitchens in SA), was chosen as a reminder of his days spent in his late grandmother’s kitchen whom he credits as the person who inspired his foray into cuisine. “At Hari, I want to create food for people – to share authentic, top notch dishes inspired Africa and world cuisine, simple and delicious.” Think ruby-cured seabass ceviche dropped into crispy golgappa spheres and topped with buchu aioli. “At Hari it’s about texture, flavour and presentation. A new kitchen has already been fitted at the restaurant and the next step is to re-do the interior and work on the outdoor spaces. In time and as the Lockdown regulations permit, there’ll be picnics on the lawn, barbeques, jazz and wine evenings, and food and art events.” Hari at Topiary Wine Estate is located on the R301 just outside Franschhoek. topiarywines.co.za | harikitchen@gmail.com | 081 280 2320

Contemporary African Artists Showcased at ManZArt Lisette Forsyth has been signed with manZArt gallery in Franschhoek since 2014. Born in Namibia when it was still South West Africa, Lisette attended Jan Van Riebeek primary school, which was burnt down during the struggle. She then switched to Camps Bay high school which according to her, was like a holiday camp compared to the constraints of the previous system. At Camps Bay she was able to model part time from the age of 14 and managed to matriculate just before calculators were permitted in maths in 1986. Lisette then travelled and worked in Europe from 1987 until 1989. She returned to South Africa and studied graphic design at the Cape Technikon and graduated in 1999 majoring in print making and photography, only to find it all go digital the very next year! In 1992, Lisette found herself working in Europe and completed an apprenticeship in

mechanical graphics at the Bayerische Rundfunk (German Television Station) she returned to South Africa with her infant son Ike permanently in 1994 where she took on work as a wardrobe artist, model and commercial actress. In 1998 while traveling Australia she joined as the resident artist in the Caretaker’s Studio and exhibited Cottesloe The People. Back in South Africa she shared a studio with Sanel Agenbag in Bree str. Cape Town and in 2004 was offered a solo exhibition: Exinhibitions Inexhibition. Another passion has been developing her homeware range – an ongoing concern. In 2009, the solo exhibition Puliccity was held at the Woodstock Studio. Visit the gallery to view a selection of her show stopper pieces that grace the walls of some of the finest homes in the world.

‘Beyond Walls’

LARGEST HUMAN CHAIN IN THE WORLD CROSSES CAPE TOWN

One of Africa’s largest and most anticipated public arts festivals, the International Public Art Festival (IPAF), is proud to announce the launch of the “Beyond Walls” Project by Saype. Representing unity, mutual aid and common effort beyond geographical constraints, the Beyond Walls project features the longest human chain in the world. This is depicted through pairs of local hands painted on land, which intertwine from town to town.

As a global initiative with different chapters around the world, the Beyond Walls Project is an example of this in action. Cape Town represents the ninth stage. Previously the hands were depicted in Paris, Andorre, Genève, Berlin, Ouagadougou, Yamoussoukro, Turin and Istanbul.

The project kicked off at the Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town as a precursor to the IPAF on the 25 January 2021. The IPAF Festival runs from 10-14 February.

Mother City of South Africa, Cape Town represents an essential step of the project due to its history marked by Apartheid. “Beyond Walls” symbolises the breaking down of political and social barriers among communities with the hope to further encourage positive dialogue.

The monumental fresco is one of many memorable installations the street art festival will offer. Attracting top talent from around the world, the IPAF is a platform for creatives to use their talents to bring communities together.

The hands will intertwine beyond inequality in three different areas of the city. Each artwork has been produced

by the artist, Saype, the first on Sea Point promenade, then in Philippi Village and in Langa. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa, the City of Cape Town, the IPAF and Baz-Art. Given the rich history of South Africa and its people, the message of this project is an essential one in encouraging unity and understanding. Baz-Art co-founder Alexandre Tilmans says, “Cape Town is an ideal flagship destination for this project. As a city that prioritises openness, peace and mutual respect, we need to keep having courageous conversations, especially in this harsh climate created by the pandemic. Artworks like this spark important dialogues and messages of hope for all citizens. The artist Guillaume Legros, alias Saype (a contraction of Say Peace) is a Swiss-based artist who creates monumental frescoes on the grass and on the ground. He is renowned as the pioneer of an artistic movement linking street art and land art. Saype’s approach and innovative technique earned him global recognition as his poetic and ephemeral works travel around the world to impact minds and spark conscious dialogue. He is also committed to eco-friendly methods in his art. He was named one of Forbes’s thirty most influential people under thirty in the field of art and culture in 2019. Hosted by Baz-Art, a local street art platform that uses painted murals to create conversations and dialogues. The IPAF showcases homegrown talent and other exceptional street artists from overseas. Visitors can immerse themselves in street art experiences through Covid-19 safe, intimate open-air tours, “Walk, run, cycle it,”. Estate Offerings at Warwick this Summer

Through determination and commitment, Norma Ratcliffe became one of the Cape’s first female winemakers – and one of its most illustrious wine personalities, whose legacy is immortalised in the Warwick “First Lady” range.

The first wine under the Warwick label was released in 1984, then named “La Femme Bleu” – “Blue Lady” as it is known today. Two years later, in 1986, the Warwick Trilogy – a three varietal Bordeaux-style blend – was released and has since been recognised as a truly iconic wine, with multiple vintages adorning some of the greatest wine lists in the world. Throughout the years, Warwick’s wines have won many awards, firmly establishing the brand as a South African icon.

In addition to tastings of the award-winning range of wines (when permitted), Warwick offers guests gourmet picnics and charcuterie platters in a tranquil, relaxed setting on the lawns or shaded by the trees of our forest courtyard. The gourmet picnic offers you and loved ones the chance to unwind and celebrate the simple things in life

Visitors from around the world keep coming back for the wildly popular ‘ Vineyard Safari’. This fun educational Land Rover Safari takes you on a mountain journey through Warwick’s vineyards. The Vineyard Safari is perfect for all ages.

“Winegrowing in Stellenbosch since 1981.” Almost all the estate’s vineyards are planted on the foothills and mid-slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain with vineyards ranging from 240 to 360 metres above sea level. This elevated position exposes the vineyards to cooling winds during the spring and summer seasons.

Bookings are essential. visit@warwickwine.com

The picnic menu revolves around fresh and seasonal ingredients, sourced locally from artisanal suppliers, including a variety of options for vegetarian and vegan visitors.

Realising the importance of biodiversity, over the past decade we have strived to maintain a balance between nature and winemaking. Our aim is to embrace the environment with our vineyard management practices. We believe in making understated classic wine that exudes elegance. Visit our online store to buy our Wines.
