Haute Cabrière Unveils a New Look Almost 25 years since the von Arnim family launched the iconic Haute Cabrière wine range, the brand has undergone an exciting packaging upgrade. The Franschhoek-based winery, with its iconic setting on the scenic Franschhoek Pass, has been specialising in wines produced from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals since the brand’s inception in the early 1990s.

Haute Cabrière’s Chardonnay Pinot Noir has since become one of South Africa’s most popular white wines, and the story behind its origins is a charming tale of providence and fate. According to family matriarch Hildegard von Arnim, 1994 was an unusually dry and warm harvest, and the hand-picking of the grapes could not be done fast enough, which led to a harvest with a higher sugar content. This produced a wine with a higher than usual alcohol content, quite unsuitable to be used for the base wine of their Pierre Jourdan Méthode Cap Classique range, as it would normally have been done. www.franschhoeklife.co.za

Founder and then Cellar Master Achim von Arnim, decided to bottle this Chardonnay Pinot Noir blend as a still wine, which was unheard of at the time. From that day onward, the wine experienced a cult following both locally and internationally. ‘We like to think of this wine as South Africa’s original Chardonnay Pinot Noir – sunshine in a bottle,’ says Hildegard von Arnim. The range also includes a light and elegant Pinot Noir Unwooded, and the highly acclaimed Pinot Noir Reserve. The Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Pinot Noir’s iconic status is highlighted with its distinct golden yellow screwcap, which draws on the range’s inspiration from Burgundy. This rich history has led the brand to adopt the Chardonnay Pinot Noir signature yellow as the Haute Cabrière brand colour. Haute Cabrière has worked closely with an experienced design team to refresh the logo and packaging, paying tribute to the past while remaining timeless and elegant. www.cabriere.co.za

Coversations with a Brewmaster: We chatted to Dewald Goosen of TukTuk Microrewery “A very nice little brewery on steroids – especially when it comes to technological advances and energy savings!” Q. How many years have you been in the beer industry and how has it changed in the last year or two? A: I have been in the beer industry for 6 years and have seen huge changes since its popularisation that dates back before then even. The last two years have been increasingly challenging for brewers and breweries of all sizes. Many new breweries have popped up DEWALD GOOSEN – TUK TUK BREWER but we have also seen many breweries closing their doors due to many reasons but I feel that South Africa’s financial situation has played a big role in this. Q. Which was the first craft beer you ever brewed at Tuk Tuk and was it a success? The first beer I brewed at Tuk Tuk was the Dunkel, which I still produce today. It was a success but still caused a few sleepless nights as I am a bit of a perfectionist and brewing a new beer on a new system is nerve racking for any brewer that takes pride in his or her creations. Q. What goes into putting your seasonal brew recipes together? The seasonal beers usually stem from something that sparks my curiosity whether it be something I ate, smelled or drank. From there I figure out how to express that flavour in a beer and the fun begins.

Q. What single word best describes your Tuk Tuk beers? “selfish”– I brew these beers to my own pallet and fully embrace the concept of “Brew the beer you want to drink in the world”. postcardsFBC_1.indd 3

Q. What’s a good food pairing with the Tuk Tuk Lager? I find the Tuk Tuk Lager to be very versatile in terms of food pairing. It is brewed to be very malty and could go with most dishes that are on offer at Tuk Tuk. www.tuktukbrew.com

TRAVEL

Four Pools in Paradise ...

BY NIRVANI PILLAY

Senses alive, you breathe in the fragrant African scent with its hint of wild sage, and hear a tropical boubou calling from high above; crane your neck to spot it, squinting as the sun peeps through the branches of giant Albida trees. A nearby rustle of leaves reveals a bull elephant stretching upwards for a ripe ana pod to snack on. The earth around is thirsty for the first rains as hundreds of pregnant impalas delay the birth of their young in anticipation. Eland dart across the now dry swamp and leave behind a shallow dust cloud. Cameras at the ready ... there might be a predator lurking nearby too. Mana means ‘four’ and is named after the surrounding pools: Main, Chine, Long and Chisambuk. A World Heritage Site, Mana Pools is one of Zimbabwe’s most pristine national parks. As sentimentality goes, Wilderness Safaris’ newest camp is named after Chief Chikwenya who is buried on Chikwenya Island – a short paddle away from the mainland where Chikwenya sits on the banks of the Zambezi River. Opulent yet humble and charming, Chikwenya Camp is the essence of southern Africa’s luxury ecotourism success. The quaint camp provides the perfect ambience to reconnect

with nature and with yourself. An absence of unnatural sounds is undoubtedly a pure boost of endorphins. Predawn, multiple bird species gently wake you from restful slumber. A cup of coffee and a muffin prepare you for your morning game drive just as the sun is rising over the horizon. There is a morning coolness which blesses you with gentle wildlife and your mind goes into bush mode; identify the spoor, make assumptions on its path, read the behaviour of plains game or the raucous chatter of Chacma baboons. There is a sentinel, an alarm call and then a fierce outburst as babies are underbelly (rather than over) for protection.

The elusive predator remains unseen. Stop for coffee, a rusk and a pee-behind-a-safe-tree before heading back. Brunch is served under another giant Albida tree, with bubbly. Bliss has never tasted this good. A gentle drive back to camp for a siesta and reprieve from the heat of the day, before tea and a boat drive on the Zambezi River to catch a tiger fish and watch a mesmerising sunset. Dinner under the open night sky completes the day. This is Mana Pools! Visit www.wilderness-safaris.com to book Chikwenya Camp

Ulusaba Dreaming

Ulusaba, meaning ‘place of little fear, is Sir Richard Branson’s private game reserve in South Africa. So named because the koppie, or hill, on which Rock Lodge sits provided the ancient Shangaan tribal warriors with the perfect lookout point. Sitting entirely within the Sabi Sand Reserve near Kruger National Park and surrounded by 13,500 hectares of open bush with 21 rooms and suites spread over two lodges: Rock Lodge, including the beautiful Cliff Lodge, and Safari Lodge. Ulusaba offers spectacular views of the hills as they rise above the surrounding terrain, unsurpassed anywhere else in the reserve. Guests can expect to see abundant game and a wide variety of sightings. The mostly Shangaan staff, hailing from the outlying communities are celebrated for their dancing and singing and a rich musical heritage. In 2016, Ulusaba was voted as the number 1 resort in Africa in the Condé Nast Traveller Reader’s Choice Awards and was ranked as the third best resort in the world! In 2018, Ulusaba was named as the Best Luxury Safari Resort by Travel + Leisure India.
