Boschendal’s Best
– THE AWARD WINNING AGRICULTURE TEAM
We don’t often think about the time, passion and work that has gone into the meals we enjoy on a daily basis. From a salad to a perfectly prepared cut of meat – every bite has a story to tell. At Boschendal, their soil to fork food philosophy is something that is not only held very close to their hearts and celebrated across the various eateries and outlets, but also a vital element of this working farm’s success and a critical element to them setting a global benchmark for an authentic experience. Recently, the stellar agriculture team achieved a slew of awards at the The Western Cape Prestige Agri Awards. Hosted annually by the the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA), the awards serve as a means of acknowledging the valuable and important contribution that agri workers make to the sustainability and growth of the agricultural sector in the Western Cape. A total of 624 agri-workers representing 11 regions and competing in 11 categories participated this year. The Boschendal team members, from drivers, to admin leaders to irrigation managers were recognized for their invaluable contribution and commitment to agriculture- a sector that naturally remains classified as an essential service due to the integral role it plays in food security, GDBP contribution and community well-being. Boschendal is also the first farm in the Cape Winelands to be awarded world-renowned environmental and animal welfare certification from A Greener World (AGW). Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW is the only higher animal welfare certification in South Africa and the standards of this programme was developed with the help of veterinary and farming experts from across the globe to encourage and maximize high-welfare farm management that is practicable. Boschendal practises regenerative agriculture – a green approach of minimal interventions and working in harmony with nature, not against it, to produce quality products, from vegetables to the famous Black angus Beef and Duroc pork. The committed team that drives these exciting projects across the nearly 2000 hectare farm, are at the forefront of making the changes and setting an example of how agriculture can be an agent for change and sustainably ensure food security for the future. Congratulations to the Boschendal agricultural team for your resounding success.

Newly Launched Wine Range, Vineyard Friends – ALL ABOUT FARMING SIDE BY SIDE WITH NATURE
Newly launched wine brand, Vineyard Friends connects the wine drinker with the natural wildlife and sustainable practices that underpin its winemaking principles. The new range, which includes four wines; Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Merlot Malbec, is vegan friendly and 100% GMO free. Vineyard Friends is dedicated to the unique animals of the Cape Winelands that make the precious vineyards their home: the Grey Duiker, the Cape Grey Mongoose, the Bat Eared Fox and the Grey Heron. Each animal plays an integral role in the lifecycle of the vineyard, from maintaining soil health to removing pests. This not only ensures a healthy harvest but limits the need for pesticides. And it’s not just these incredible cape creatures who are doing their part to create a more sustainable option for South African wine drinkers. Vineyard Friends is also the culmination of two decades of practical response to environmental challenges and the result of a myriad of sustainable practices.

and the human hand. Great wine is made in the vineyard. Farming side by side with nature – not against it.
After all, sustainable winemaking is a team effort. It’s about maintaining the delicate balance between flora, fauna

The vineyards themselves make use of water saving cover crops while facilities make use of bio-treated grey water in all ablutions and gardens – drastically reducing the use of potable water. Additionally an anaerobic process sees clean water released into the local municipality, to support the community. With 50 million precious litres of irrigation water reclaimed per year to provide the vineyards with the water they require to thrive. The Vineyard Friends cellar in Wellington has the largest solar photovoltaic energy installation of any wine production facility in South Africa. An 801 kW roof array of 2400 panels not only offsets 1265 tonnes of potential CO2 emissions, but also produces clean, surplus energy to be fed into the grid of the neighbouring town and its communities. Partners and suppliers are chosen very carefully – only working with those who share a commitment to honouring nature and biodiversity through sustainable and ethical practices. Even the Vineyard Friends bottle itself has recycled glass content, is lightweight and includes a label on 100% recycled paper from Enviro LabelTM. Despite all of these interventions, the creators of Vineyard Friends know that the journey to sustainability never ends and that the environmental impact of winemaking still remains. That is why a community-led bamboo growing carbon reduction project runs in parallel with the work in the vineyards, the production facilities and on the bottle itself. It is also why there is a continuous commitment to Add Franschhoek life.qxp_Layout 1 16.12.2021 12:54 Side 1

Love. Laugh. Eat with Mira Meet Mira – passionate about conscious living, plant-based nourishment and holistic healing. Mira inspires people to eat more plants! Having been a vegetarian since the womb, she grew up in a veggie-friendly household with influences of macrobiotics and Ayurveda. But the idea of giving up dairy (mostly cheese) was always a struggle. She loved cooking from a young age, but to her mother’s horror and by her own admission, not a great cleaner of dishes!! With wooden spoon as a microphone, weekends were spent in front of imaginary cooking show audiences detailing recipes step by step. For as long as she can remember, Mira has loved food and creating in the kitchen is her happy place. After running two businesses from the age of 24, burning the candle at both ends, neglecting her physical and mental health resulted in extreme burn out and severe adrenal fatigue which also led to anxiety and panic attacks coupled with PCOS and a liver condition. The intense challenge of finding a way back to the light led Mira on an incredible journey of selfdiscovery, transformational growth, conscious living, healing with plants and most importantly learning to prioritize health and wellness. Her food philosophy is simple, food should be delicious, nutritious and nourishing while helping to fuel and heal the body, mind and spirit. She loves recreating favourite recipes into gluten-free, dairyfree and refined sugar-free. Mira cooks intuitively, developing delicious dishes while sharing her plantbased, whole food recipe journey, in honour of her beautiful mother, the greatest love she has known. Try Mira’s moreish Cauli Wings with Cashew Sour Cream Dipping Sauce – The perfect party snack for family and friends! INGREDIENTS 2 cauliflower heads, gently cut into florets 1 cup organic soy milk (can sub almond milk) 1 cup chickpea flour 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp lemon zest 1 tsp dried herbs (basil and parsley work well) 1 tsp special rub mix (equal amounts of ground coriander, ground ginger and mustard powder)
1 tsp dried vegetable stock (Mary Ann’s veg stock is my ultimate pantry staple) ½ tsp chilli flakes (optional) Oil for shallow frying (I use extra virgin olive oil or coldpressed coconut oil) METHOD · Place the organic soy milk in a bowl. · In a separate bowl, combine the chickpea flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, lemon zest, dried herbs, special rub mix, dried vegetable stock and chilli flakes together. Mix well. · Dip the cauliflower floret into the soy milk, so that the entire piece is well covered in milk. Then roll the floret in the dry chickpea mix so that it is heavily coated all over. The mix should be enough for two cauliflower heads but if you have any leftovers you can combine the dry and wet mixtures together and make a thin flatbread/ savoury style pancake in a non-stick pan. · Heat a large saucepan on medium heat with olive or coconut oil. These aren’t deep fried so the oil doesn’t cover the florets, it just goes up to about half-way of the actual cauliflower floret size. · Once the oil is hot, place the well-coated florets into the hot oil and cook for a few minutes on each side until golden brown. These can be made in advance and reheated in the oven to crisp them up! Best served immediately with tangy cashew sour cream dipping sauce – to get this recipe and more visit www.miraweiner.com

Exhibition Debut for 87-Year Old John van Zyl At the recent “Inspiration” art exhibition at the Franschhoek Reformed Church, one of the local artists participating was 87-year old John van Zyl. This was the first exhibition by the South African born academic, who retired to Franschhoek in 2006.
He is a self-taught painter who only started painting on his 85th birthday, when a friend unexpectedly presented him with an easel and a box full of paints. When asked what had inspired him to start painting at this ripe old age, van Zyl answered: “There were two reasons. Firstly, I simply love art. I have, over the years, visited great art museums worldwide. I developed a deep appreciation for the manifold ways artists have expressed themselves over the ages. Secondly, I have been involved with images all my academic life as a lecturer in media studies and as a journalist. I have taught film and photography and was for many years a film, television and photographic critic for THE STAR and BUSINESS DAY.” Van Zyl at the same time ran a South African community filmmaking project for the French government in the 1980’s, for which he was rewarded by being made a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques. “Swopping the medium of film for the medium of paint was exciting and challenging. My experience of documentary film opened my eyes to the colours and shapes of informal houses in the Boland. Also, for someone born in the flat Free State with its distant horizons, the ever-changing mountain landscapes that surround me now are a continuous source of wonderment and inspiration.” John van Zyl’s paintings can be viewed on www.southafricanartists.com

It’s the Million Little Things … CRUISING ON THE NEW SILVER MOON IN GREECE
Gaynor Galbraith Neill – Managing Director/Owner of Cruise Vacations reviews her recent trip on board the new Silver Moon. While launching World Cruise 2023, the Chief Marketing Officer of Silversea Cruises quoted Hemingway when asked about resumption of services “Gradually, then one day suddenly” … I have recited those words over and over because, in these unprecedented times, all that could be done was to plan for the safe resumption of voyages, so that when the time came, we would be prepared and ready to get people back to their travels. Sitting on the pool deck of the brand-new Silver Moon, gradually has become suddenly, it’s almost a little overwhelming. Over the past eighteen months, travel had become so difficult to even imagine but when Silversea Cruises finally resumed services in June this year with the inaugural season, we started imagining again and find ourselves, more appreciative, more mindful.
Having being involved with the representation of Silversea Cruises in South Africa since the early days, I have had the great privilege to have sailed on most of the ships over the years. Hundreds of touches of finer details make the Silver Moon feel like a safe sanctuary. While I enjoyed visiting the islands and the sites of the Greece, my travelling base, the Silver Moon delivered what can only be described as the perfect return to travel. Silversea refer to it as “whispered luxury” and the term makes complete sense. The magnificent ship that feels neither big nor small, with soft muted colour hues, give Silver Moon a modern, contemporary feel. Yet the classic and elegant touch of the thoughtfully selected and curated artworks, photographs, paintings, sculptures, Lalique glass and artefacts carefully placed around the
ship, adorning public areas and lobbies, celebrate the classic tradition of cruising. It’s knowing that by developing and introducing the S.A.L.T. concept (Sea and Land Taste), that Silversea have given every consideration to your overall experience. By bringing your destination aboard S.A.L.T ensures the immersive experience. Book a class in the high-tech Test Kitchen Lab on board and learn to make a traditional local dish or delicacy, dine in the S.A.L.T restaurant with its daily destination menu or voyage regional menu or better still, join the S.A.L.T. experience ashore for a local culinary masterclass or experience. It’s all about choices … a bath scented with Ortigia Salts drawn by your butler as you prepare for a dinner that will undoubtedly meet and satisfy any culinary craving in one of the eight restaurants on board and ending your day by putting your head down on your choice of pillow under plush linen and expecting a great night’s sleep. Health and safety protocols have had to change and these have been painstakingly implemented. Silversea have managed to integrate those new measures in a subtle and unobtrusive way. Guests are required to wear masks walking around the inside of the vessel and may be removed once seated in the restaurants, theatre, lounges, bars or at the pool. On arrival each guest receives a Bvlgari pouch filled with hand-sanitiser and hand cream, surgical mask and disinfectant wipes. Perhaps I got lost for a while focusing on the something like 900 destinations Silversea offer across the fleet of five classic and four expedition ships, that’s what it’s all about right? It is all the little things that take that journey from spectacular to sublime. Welcome to the World by Silversea Cruises.
