Dine for a Purpose Giving back to the community is everybody’s duty. At Bistro BonBon they like to give back through what they love and do best. “Dine for a Purpose” is a series of events that are planned for the next few months. Bistro BonBon will be hosting special events and a portion of the ticket sales will go to a pre-selected non-profit organization. The first event to be held at Bistro BonBon on 27 July 2019 will be “Battle of the Bubbles”. They’ve invited two wine makers to host the dinner: Emma Bruwer from Le Lude in Franschhoek and John Loubser from Silverthorn wines in Robertson. Chef Archie Maclean will pair a four-course dinner with two different MCCs from each farm. There will be oysters and bubbles on arrival, as well as a talk on MCC production and regional differences in MCC. The beneficiary for the evening will be Safe Hands Animal Rescue Franschhoek and they will receive R100 from every ticket sold. Tickets for the evening will be R650 pp and are limited.

“I wondered why somebody didn’t do something. Then I realized, I am somebody.” Unknown author

The second “Dine for a Purpose” event in October 2019 will be a Halloween themed “Murder Mystery Night”. “The Murder Mystery Night” will offer interactive entertainment, costumes and of course dinner! A great event for big groups...This promises to be a dinner to die for! The third “Dine for a Purpose” event on the cards will be a “Canapé and Casino Royale” themed evening in January 2020. The main draw will be a poker tournament, while roulette and blackjack tables will also be available. The dress code will be “James Bond”. Canapés will be served during the evening. No sit-down dinner with this event, lest it comes between the players and a lucky streak! Bistro BonBon is very excited to launch the “Dine for a Purpose” fundraising campaign and encourages people to give responsibly. Consequently Bistro BonBon commits to on-going communication with the beneficiaries and to ensuring that community members are informed as to where their donations have made a difference. Alto marks a Century of Winemaking Heritage

More than a milestone, the occasion recalls the proud story of a Stellenbosch champion and the people who have made it so. Few wineries ever attain, and retain, the level of trust Alto has. The Alto story is littered with local and international awards, but that’s not the only measure of their success. “Alto has always been about doing justice to the terroir’. The vineyards of Alto have remained a feature of the landscape since 1919. Although Alto’s title deed is dated 1693, its 100year heritage of winemaking began with Manie Malan, who helped his father Hennie establish the first vines. He recognised that the farm’s unique aspect, soils and slopes were ideal for crafting full-bodied red wines. The Malans nurtured and expanded the vineyards for four decades before selling in 1959 to Piet du Toit – a fourth generation winemaker who

introduced Alto’s first Cabernet Sauvignon, in 1965. In 1983, soon after the new wine cellar was built, he handed over to his son, Gerhard. Better known as “Hempies”, he became the fifth generation in a line of South African Huguenot winemakers and responsible for launching its first Shiraz in 2001. With the turn of the century came a changing of the guard at Alto under Schalk van der Westhuizen, who in 2010 launched Alto’s flagship M.P.H.S, a wine dedicated in acronym and stature to the remarkably few winemakers that held sway over Alto estate’s long history. Today, Alto wines are made by Bertho van der Westhuizen – only the fifth winemaker in the winery’s long history. Alto is part of the newly formed Libertas Vineyards and Estates company, custodian of premium wine brands from across the Cape. www.alto.co.za

A two-year bursary to continue their studies at the International College of Tourism & Management in Austria, but they need to cover the costs of getting there (visas, insurance and flights). Aya is currently employed by the River Café as a waitress and this is how this event was born,” explains academy co-founder, Tarryn Corlett. “We are immensely grateful to the River Café Team for supporting Aya and her fellow students.” The Academy would like to encourage residents and visitors alike to support these students in their quest to raise R20 000 each so that they can fulfil their study dreams and bring back the knowledge and skills to help the local tourism industry thrive. The rest of the Class of 2019 are in full support of their classmates and will be taking over the kitchen, bar and coffee station to practice what they have learnt this year, as well as to ensure that this is a successful and fun-filled event for all. ART

Two Degrees of Separation

A DEVELOPING AND ONGOING INSTALLATION WITHIN THE VILLAGE OF FRANSCHHOEK Six degrees of separation is the idea that, among the seven billion people in the world, we are all connected through a maximum of six people. As a result, a chain of “a friend of a friend” statements can be made to connect any two people within six steps. Within Franschhoek, these degrees are reduced to only two degrees. We are so connected within our community that we have the distinctive ability to empathise with every person because we know them through a contemporaneous personal relationship. This sculptural series titled Two Degrees is a collaboration by three artists and is born from a love for art and a desire to echo a rarely heard voice of the inspirational spirit that resonates through the unique community of Franschhoek. Franschhoek has historically experienced its fair share of overwhelming events; most recently however, we experienced devastating fires across the valley that potentially could have decimated

this community. What would have created chaos emerged as opportunity, one that the people of Franschhoek boldly and wholeheartedly took part in. These life size sculptures epitomise the strands that silently bind our community together when disaster, in any form, falls on our beloved village. The Two Degrees series is a demonstration of our overwhelming strength as a South African community. When we join together, entwining stories of support, aid and action within our village, the true core of Franschhoek comes through stronger than ever. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” The ability created by two degrees of separation in Franschhoek is the perfect realisation of this African proverb, how far we have come and how far we will go. Every sculpture is an original and priced at R65 000. For any enquires please contact Carey Carter 083 300 4753.

‘Implement’ by Conrad Hicks

SOLO EXHIBITION INVITES REFLECTION ON THE ROLE OF BEAUTY IN HUMAN EVOLUTION Artist-blacksmith Conrad Hicks’ upcoming solo exhibition, Implement, is the culmination of an intuitive quest for beauty that he traces back to the origins of humankind. His new collection of hand-forged metal furniture and sculpture ripples with a primal energy, captured in the hammered marks and archetypal forms that define his oeuvre. Implement will be on show at Southern Guild from 24 May until 17 July 2019. Conrad is a deeply philosophical artist who has long immersed himself in the history of human evolution and anthropology. His work is extremely labour-intensive, necessitating a physicality through which he channels his subconscious. In the process of cutting, pressing, heating, hammering and stretching metal, he discovers an archetypal language that calls to mind ancient art forms. His sculptural practice has developed in parallel with his work as a maker of utilitarian implements such as knives, pans and blacksmithing tools. His massive studio at The Bijou, an old Art Deco cinema in Observatory, houses a vast collection of tools and machines, many of them historic,

Some of these implements will form part of an installation recreating aspects of the artist’s studio inside the gallery. In addition, running alongside Implement at Southern Guild will be an off-site programme of studio tours and VIP events at the artist’s forge. Conrad studied sculpture in the 1980s and worked in the art and restoration field in London. Drawn to blacksmithing by his interest in the discipline of doing a ‘craft’, he opened his forge workshop in Cape Town in 1991. He has exhibited his collectible work with Southern Guild since 2013, when he was included in the influential Heavy Metal exhibition at the Bronze Age Foundry in Woodstock. Conrad has shown to international audiences and is responsible for many major public and private commissions, with his work appearing at Ellerman House, the Fan Walk and the Cape Quarter, all in Cape Town; at Tokara Wine Farm in Stellenbosch; and in private residences in the US and Switzerland. www.theguildgroup.co.za

ART

In the Artists words …

ABE OPPERMAN 2019 SOLO EXHIBITION HELD AT IS ART FROM 1 JULY - 31 JULY 2019 For the month of July, locals and tourists alike will be treated to a solo exhibition presented by the Abe Opperman Gallery Over Bastille weekend (13/14 July), the gallery will be serving wine and snacks with fantastic prizes and give aways on offer! Use the hashtag #abeoppermangallery on Instagram and grab your badge to be part of the festivities. About the exhibition … “Presented in this exhibition is a collection that captures, documents and distills my interaction with the world as I observe and experience it. I draw deeper from my own inner child. I embrace my artistic creativity and expression to share and celebrate the pleasures and joy surrounding my eyes. I engage with my surrounding with pleasure, which encapsulates and stimulate my senses. The is the journey I will take you on … My work is part of an ongoing deeper exploration of humanity and our ordinary lives and commonplace stuff that makes living complex, troubling yet so profoundly satisfying. We are often preoccupied by the serious and

weighty matter of life, such as inequality; racism and all other issues that are often considered worthy of consideration. I take the risk of reminding us, through my work, that within our reach are emotions of defeat, pain, courage, joy and pleasure. A life that is obvious, which we often take for granted and consequently pay no attention to it. My inspiration is everyday encounters, from the mundane to the profound. When close attention is paid to these encounters, an understanding of life and society emerges and a complex journey is undertaken, which is the driving force of my work. In my daily life in Johannesburg, to my travels around the world, I observe the world around myself. These are the reflections, both conscious and subconscious, that emerge in my work. My work is a gathering, a visual register and an emotional response to what I see and experience. I assertively reject any form of pigeonholing in my work and I’m not comfortable with the labeling and traditional genres. My work is a creative response to what I see and what surrounds me. I see a young boy dancing at the traffic lights and in that moment, I am

drawn to his happiness, the lightness of his being as I watch his nimble feet. As time passes, I find the image and the experience of the young boy has stayed with me. The experience manifests in my work. Whilst I reject the notion of my work being anything other than a creative expression, it is not possible to view my work and not make conscious connections about society and our world. For example, we have to ask – how is it that we go about our lives without appreciating the beauty, the ordinary and everyday life? How it is that our senses are dulled and muted to the pleasures of sound, smell and all that is around us? My work is firmly located in this realm of life – where pleasure is not forbidden. Where to be joyful and playful is not to negate the harsh realities of life. It simply is a way of learning to take notice, to be fully present in our lives and in our society, and also to connect with the big extra ordinary and ordinary experiences. It is to find the inner child, embrace what the child can tach us and in that (perhaps at a level that may appear to be naive) connect with other human beings and our environment in ways that are profound beyond measure.

Wilderness Safaris opens Rwanda’s First Luxury Safari Camp in Akagera

Wilderness Safaris has officially opened its new camp, Magashi, overlooking scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga in the north-east of Rwanda’s wildlife-rich Akagera National Park. Launched in partnership with conservation nonprofit African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), both of which manage the national park, Magashi offers life-changing journeys to this remarkable location – journeys that are strongly rooted in a shared core purpose: to help conserve Rwanda’s last protected savannah ecosystem and threatened species like the East African subspecies of black rhino and rare shoebill stork. Comprising a traditional East African “safari under canvas”

feel, Magashi’s six airy tented suites and main guest areas have been designed to take full advantage of the beautiful wilderness surrounds and tranquil, uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga. Paying homage to Rwandan culture through locally-inspired interior design and architecture, Magashi truly celebrates the country’s inspiring renaissance – a huge part of which has seen the reinvention of traditional textiles and ceremonies in a modern context. Situated in north-eastern Akagera, Magashi offers exceptional game-viewing, including thrilling leopard and lion sightings and a range of plains game, from buffalo and hippo to zebra, Defassa waterbuck, impala, eland, Masai giraffe and topi; Akagera’s almost 500 bird species include

lifers such as the papyrus gonolek. Guests will be able to explore the concession on expertly-guided day and night game drives, boating trips and walks. In 2015, African Parks reintroduced lions to the park after a 20-year absence, and reintroduced the black rhinoceros in 2017, making this Rwanda’s only home to Africa’s iconic savannah megafauna. Akagera provides one of the most scenic and biodiverse savannah experiences in East Africa, and in addition to offering guests a life-changing journey with purpose, Magashi will help drive sustainable ecotourism to the Park, positively contributing to conservation and the empowerment of neighbouring communities. www.wilderness-safaris.com
