From Café BonBon to Bistro BonBon

FOOD & DRINK

“There’s nothing wrong with change if it’s in the right direction!” Sir Winston Churchill Throughout its 15-year life Café BonBon was always synonymous with great food, friendly welcoming service and, of course, the best location. That has not changed. The name and owners however have. Don’t fear though, Bistro BonBon will still provide all the great experiences that Café BonBon was known for. Café BonBon was owned and operated by Gert Gertzen and Louis Matthee, who have now decided to focus on other ventures. They have given young couple Archie and Dominique Maclean the opportunity to own and operate Bistro BonBon in the café’s place.

SUNDOWNERS

Archie and Dominique are very excited about the change and the future. “We feel that Bistro better represents the style of restaurant that we have and where we want to go.” Archie has been in the hospitality industry for many years and has worked with top chefs around the world. He will be bringing all his knowledge to the menus and creating food that can be enjoyed all day by all the family. The menu is not complicated; rather it offers great tasting and simple European-style bistro food. This winter they have also incorporated some traditional South African flavours into their menu. Dominique heads up the front of house team managing the breakfast, lunch and dinner services. Determined to maintain the high standard of service of the past Dominique and her team will make guests feel like they’ve come home with their friendly and welcoming service. Bistro BonBon is located on the tranquil La Petite Dauphine Farm just outside of the hustle and bustle of the Franschhoek Main Road. Franschhoek, claimed by many to be Africa’s most beautiful village, prides itself in producing some of the best wines on the continent and luring guests from near and far to wind down and enjoy the many culinary offerings at some of the top restaurants and wine farms to be found anywhere.

A new line of fine contemporary silk scarfs by high calibre artists Karin Miller, Katie Mckenzie and Caytlin Truman-Baker – each numbered and unique – are making their world debut next to the simply breath-taking sculptures of heavyweights like Carl Von Bach and new kid on the block and hot investment tip, sculptor Ferdi B Dick.

The village also attracts many art lovers who love to explore the galleries, stumble upon sculptures around the village and find surprising art in restaurants, wine farms and guesthouses.

There are too many creative talents assembled at manZArt+ to mention them all here – but a visit to this new showroom, conveniently positioned between Masquerade and Smith at The Ivy just opposite Col’caccio will most likely see you leaving with some unique luxury products you couldn’t say ‘No’ to. And wanting to come back for more very soon.

Welcome manZArt+ – the new kid on the block. Just like its well-known brother, manZArt, which has been offering African contemporary art to its long list of collectors since 2006, manZArt+ is ideally situated on the main strip of Franschhoek.

Franschhoek yet again became more interesting and manZArt+ proves that this little village is the epicentre of African fine living. Contact 072 912 2929

The ship also offers French gastronomy and fine-dining services with indoor and outdoor options, four exclusive lounges and bars, along with cutting-edge technology that is conscious of protecting and preserving the environment. Le Bougainville also features a world-first multi-sensory underwater lounge, named Blue Eye. Dark – located

beneath the water line where passengers can relax to the acoustics of the sea while observing the underwater world through two giant, curved portholes designed in the shape of a cetacean eye.

Notably, the “Secret Islands of Seychelles and Aldabra Atoll – with National Geographic” is a cruise that will leave you spellbound. This 13-day expedition invites you to discover the most stunning islands Seychelles has to offer. Departing from the archipelago’s capital, Victoria, the magic starts immediately as you sail into paradise. The first port of call is Poivre Island, where sea turtles can be found swimming in the lagoon. Marine life is in abundance as are the diving and snorkelling opportunities. Ponant will welcome another Explorer-class expedition ship, Le Dumont-d’Urville, into service in June 2019. Two more Explorer vessels are due for deployment in 2020.

Ponant’s Explorer ships feature a sleek, signature yacht-style and luxury finishings, and are a maximum 131-metres in length, giving passengers an opportunity to venture even closer to destinations that larger cruise ships simply cannot reach.

Grande Dame of “Plett” gets Grand Makeover

The darling of Plettenberg Bay hospitality, the eponymously named The Plettenberg, has updated its old world glam in a recent refurbishment. The five-star boutique hotel, part of The Liz McGrath Collection, is situated on a rocky headland in one of South Africa’s most spectacular beach towns direct beach access and some of the most breathtaking vistas in Southern Africa, with views of the ocean, mountains and endless stretches of golden sand. The Plettenberg is gifted with the most spectacular site overlooking the ocean and offers the best 270-degree view in the bay. It was the site itself that provided the inspiration for the new interior direction. The interior redesign was headed by the daughters of the late and much-loved Liz McGrath, Lesley Kelly and Susan Nathan, who co-own the hotel along with their brother Michael McGrath, the Liz McGrath Collection’s current chairperson. The duo has had extensive experience in interior design through developing their own luxury properties. The redesign took eight weeks to complete and the Villas are now open for booking. The successful revitalisation of the hotel in this inviting contemporary language has reconfirmed The Plettenberg’s reputation as one of the standout destinations of South Africa’s East Coast. Guests may enjoy world-class cuisine pre- or post-dinner drinks, as well as tea, wine and meticulously crafted signature cocktails throughout the day. Guests may relax at one of two pools with stunning sea views, or on the Sun Lounge & Terrace, before getting pampered at the Fresh Wellness Spa, or indulging in a spot of shopping at The Collection Boutique. Whether visitors are looking for a romantic seaside escape or an action-packed family holiday, The Plettenberg is the ideal place to relax and unwind, recharge and reinvigorate.
