Chefs Warehouse at Maison, Franschhoek

Ménage à trois for Chefs Warehouse at Maison Joining the renowned Chefs Warehouse & Canteen and Chef’s Warehouse Beau Constantia, Chefs Warehouse at Maison completes the trilogy. In little more than six months since it was opened, Chefs Warehouse at Maison has established itself as a firm favourite in Franschhoek, attracting a loyal following among international visitors and Cape winelands locals in search of a different taste experience.

Based on the Tapas for Two concept developed by Eat Out magazine’s 2017 Chef of the Year Liam Tomlin, Head Chef David Schneider uses fresh, seasonal ingredients to create a global, tapas-inspired menu that combines a world of different flavours in a multi-course meal. Chefs Warehouse at Maison offers eight dishes spread out over three leisurely courses shared by two people. The emphasis is on sharing not only eight different taste experiences but also the tranquil setting overlooking Maison Estate’s tree-lined lawns and vineyards, with

chickens roaming freely and Porcini the pig close by. Lunch-time guests have the option of dining outside at long tables under majestic oak trees on the lawn. Children are also more than welcome, and Chefs Warehouse at Maison offers them some of their favourite treats.

The Tapas for Two menu constantly changes and evolves with new taste experiences. For guests who visit Maison Estate to taste its fine range of wines, Chefs Warehouse at Maison offers fulsome snack boards with a range of cheeses and charcuterie. Chefs Warehouse at Maison is situated on the R45 main road and next to a hop-on hop-off point on the Franschhoek Wine Tram route. The restaurant is open for lunch from Tuesday to Sunday and for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday. Reservations can be made by calling 021 876 2116 or book on-line at cw.maison@gmail.com For more information, go to www.maisonestate.co.za

Beautiful bites at Café BonBon

A ‘Winters Salad’

Café BonBon is a restaurant with an amazing pedigree, serving as an incubator for some culinary heroes! The new kid on the block, Chef Grant Greg Lynott, is a young and dynamic foodie with a sincere approach to provenance that shines through in his menus. This considered approach is a firm habit after a few years at the helm of some great restaurants in the Overberg and a background in culinary consulting. “I might not have the classic story about a grandmother raising me in a farm kitchen but I have always had a strong passion for food growing up and these days my wife and mother-in-law keep me rooted with my newly-acquired Portuguese heritage,” says Grant.

Our new food garden has been a star this season having only got it going late last year! It’s already given us some amazing produce and continues to inspire.

This winter at Café BonBon, the focus will be classic comfort food with a modern spin here and there to keep both locals and “the Instagram crowd” happy. Some stand outs are the Sustainable Fish Caldo Verde, BonBon’s signature wild mushroom risotto and desserts featuring wild flowers and creative custards!

Sculptor Samuel Allerton off to Congo to meet gorillas As part of his research for his upcoming solo show, Franschhoek-based sculptor, Samuel Allerton, will be visiting Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo to witness the critically-endangered mountain gorillas in their natural jungle habitat. He will observe the gorillas first hand and experience their mannerisms, habits and characters in a way that will directly inform the creation of works that are authentic and based on his experience.

Samuel is working towards a solo sculpture exhibition, which will open towards the end of 2018. The focus will be on these majestic primates and the uncertainties that surround their future survival. He has long been obsessed with these gentle giants and their powerful presence in both nature and our collective imaginations. In using the gorilla as a metaphor for nature as a whole, Samuel highlights the immense power and contrasting fragility of the natural world. This particular series of sculptures drives home how intricately linked our souls, as humans, are to nature.

Using humour, popular culture references and iconic imagery combined with traditional and primitive forms and mark making the work becomes complexly layered and at the same time accessible to a wide audience on many levels. The combination of animal and figurative elements highlights the co-dependency and complex symbiotic relationship we share with nature. Samuel hopes that through this work he is able to contribute to the conservation of the gorillas and many other animals by raising awareness and encouraging eco-tourism to some of the most beautiful and other-worldly places on the planet. The gorilla solo exhibition will be opening in October in Johannesburg and in November in Cape Town, at The Boutique Gallery in Camps Bay and Franschhoek. Samuel’s work will also be traveling to galleries in Belgium and France. Franschhoek Literary Festival 2018

Every year for the past 10 years, the Franschhoek Literary Festival has delighted, challenged and enthralled readers from across the country and abroad. FLF 2018 will be no exception, taking place on the 18-20 May. This year’s festival will showcase up to 160 authors and 40 event chairs, alongside local musicians and performers who will entertain into the evening. International authors include Zinzi Clemmons (US), Mick Herron, Kate Mosse and Kate Furnivall (UK), Nicolas Fargues (France), Orly Castel-Bloom (Israel), Maya Fowler and Bianca Marais (Canada), Irish poet Joseph Woods, South Africa’s own Mark Shaw (now based in Switzerland) and Christopher Hope (UK). The local authors are too many to mention, but look out for your favourites on the programme: Jacques Pauw, Sisonke Msimang, the everpopular Deon Meyer, Redi Tlhabi, Ruda Landman, Karin Brynard, Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, Simon Dingle, Kate Turkington and Zapiro. Each year, as the organisers start building the extensive programme, a theme appears. This never happens by design, but is a reflection of the mood and tone of the country, which is in turn reflected in the featured books. This year the theme revolves around ‘urgency’, a real need for change right now. Here’s a taste of what to expect (and what to book for!): RECIPE FOR A PRESIDENT: What kind of president does

South Africa truly need, and are we convinced that such a person exists? Jacques Pauw (The President’s Keepers) and Jan-Jan Joubert (Who Will Rule in 2019) stir the pot with international relations scholar Oscar van Heerden. A MACRO-ECONOMIC MASTERCLASS: SA’s in a state of economic crisis. How did we get here and how do we pull back from the brink? Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh (Democracy and Delusion) leads the conversation with Claire Bisseker (On the Brink) and Frans Rautenbach (SA can work). WHY WE SHOULD CARE: Our planet’s wildlife is under threat from poaching, climate change, and urbanisation. Tamara LePine-Williams discusses why this matters with Richard Peirce (Nicole), James Clarke and Josh Crickmay (Josh Crickmay’s Big Year). REASONS TO GO. REASONS TO STAY: Danielle Bowler explores the motivations for moving from – or staying in – the lands of our birth, with Christopher Hope, Sizwe MpofuWalsh, and Nicolas Fargues (I Was Behind You). Other not-to-be-missed events include: HOW PEOPLE SHAPED ME: Daniel Baxter, Mzuvukile Maqetuka and Nomvuyo Ngcelwani share how communities can enrich our experiences and change our lives. Phehello Mofokeng leads the discussion. AS WE DISCUSSED: Biographers give the facts, but how do they and their subjects decide what to share and what not to? Wamuwi Mbao debates the issues of veracity and trust with Eric Naki, Sibusiso Mjikeliso and Redi Tlhabi. In keeping with true FLF spirit, you’ll also be able to enjoy a mini poetry programme; inspiring writing workshops with Gus Silber, Dianne Stewart and Hedley Twidle; magical storytelling with Nolubabalo Rani, Gilly Southwood and Philippa Kabali-Kagwa; The Poetry for Life finals; a school spelling bee; evening talks and performances by Darrel Bristow-Bovey, Ter Hollmann and Steven Boykey Sidley, as well as mesmerising musical performances by Pops Mohamed and Dave Reynolds, Nicky Schrire’s Ingrid Jonker Suite, and the classical magic of Christopher Duigan. You’ll find the complete programme on www.flf.co.za. Tickets are available from www.webtickets.co.za. Don’t leave it to the last minute!
