Raise Your Glass Twice Hey Joe Brewing Company has finally opened and word among the locals is that it was well worth the wait! This Belgian-inspired, destination brewery with a focus on family and fun, expresses its culture through their artisan style of beer brewing. Hey Joe Beer is ‘hands on’ brewed in a 1961 copper brewhouse imported all the way from; yes you guessed it, Belgium! The former ‘Halve Maan’ copper brewhouse is now installed in the abbey-styled brewery where an exciting array of Belgian-inspired beer is brewed. The Taproom is designed to offer an up-close experience of the brewhouse while you are encouraged to taste the core range of 4 beers: Witbier, Spéciale Belge, Farmhouse Saison and Blonde. Tastings, as well as tap beer by the glass are on offer. The Hey Joe team take an educative stance when explaining the beers and the processes involved. If you want to learn a thing or two about beer making, visit the taproom and feel free to ask as many questions as you like. Not just incredible beer, but also top-notch food prepared by Chef Nicola Spilsbury, has patrons salivating! Nicola has created a delicious menu that is not only inspired by the Belgians but incorporates the Hey Joe core range of beers too. Vegetarians and children and even well-behaved furry kids, are catered for and welcomed at Hey Joe. They even have an alcohol-free beer made especially for dogs. Ask for Hond Bier! The brewery accommodates groups of all sizes. The full-service kitchen and restaurant are open 7 days a week from 11h00 – 19h00 (kitchen closes at 17h00). Margot Janse is Making a Difference
A BIG difference. Her passion project, Isabelo was born in 2009, because “no child can learn on an empty stomach”.
With the help of a dietitian, Margot developed a highly nutritious muffin recipe. Every Friday would see her baking and delivering muffins to a small local playschool with 70 hungry children. This proved so popular and with the help of some generous donations supply was increased to over 100 children in two different preschools, five days a week! A successful fundraising dinner in The Netherlands in 2011 was the start to feeding warm, nutritious lunches to 185 children across three schools. All the meals were prepared by Margot’s kitchen with her team at the The Tasting Room restaurant. Isabelo started funding the Kusasa Breakfast Club, feeding 1100 primary school children in Franschhoek, porridge, fruit and milk every school day.
By April 2017, a big change was on the cards and after 21 years as Executive Chef of The Tasting Room, Chef Margot left this role and moved Isabelo into her house where the garage became the distribution centre for all the food. Today, Isabelo uses a catering company in Cape Town that make the meals for the 200 pre-school children. Milk, fruit, porridge and a lot of eggs are delivered to her house and with help from The Kusasa Project the daily food deliveries are executed. In February of this year, Margo put together an incredible event in Brussels, where Belgium’s capital city welcomed 25 international chefs to cook together in in aid of Isabelo. Three top Brussels restaurants, Bon Bon, Bozar and Le Chalet de La Foret welcomed chefs from across the globe for a 10-course menu. The chefs included, among others Pascal Barbot of L’Astrance, Mauro Colagreco of Mirazur, Rodolfo Guzman of Borago, Virgilio Martinez of Central Lima and Alain Passard of L’Arpege. All proceeds from the night went to Isabelo, Feeding Hungry Minds. The Isabelo project has proven to be awe-inspiring and has surpassed all expectations. If you would like to contribute to Isabelo and make a difference contact isabelocharity@gmail.com or visit www.isabelocharity.com for more information.
PHOTO BRUCE TUCK
In 2014, Margot raised more funds by running the Cape Town Marathon. This, along with contributions
from suppliers etc., went towards the upgrading of the kitchens at Dalubuhle and Wes-Eind Primary Schools.
PHOTO @BLUECLIC.COM/LOBET
In her own words, “Every morning I would drive to my restaurant The Tasting Room (Le Quartier Français, Franschhoek) and turn left at the bottom of the road. Within a kilometer I would be in my beautiful kitchen, working with the best produce. If I turned right at the bottom of my road and travel 1 kilometer I would get to the middle of the township, surrounded by poverty and hunger with children who go to school on empty stomachs. The difference is too vast; I had to do something to start making a difference.”

EVENTS & FESTIVALS
The Franschhoek Literary Festival Raising the Bar in 2019
Established in 2007, the Franschhoek Literary Festival, a non-profit organization, continues to delight festival goers each year. In doing so it raises funds for local community and school libraries and training and placing assistant school librarians, through the FLF Library Fund. Set in the magnificent Franschhoek Valley, home to some of South Africa’s top chefs, award winning wineries and boutique hotels, the events take place in a variety of village venues within a few minutes’ walk of each other, creating a vibrant ambience in the streets buzzing with book-lovers. The emphasis is on informal discussions and spirited debates between several writers with a chairperson, or oneon-one conversations and occasional talks. What makes up the event? Over one hundred and fifty writers, chairs, and subject matter specialists; more than one-hundred events, a tiny staff contingent, a seemingly tireless group of dedicated volunteers and truly supportive sponsor – Porcupine Ridge Wines, from Boekenhoutskloof. Porcupine Ridge wines were launched in 1996 and have grown to be one of the most recognised wine brands in South Africa. Located in the Franschhoek Valley, Porcupine Ridge has always taken a keen interest in the development of the town, and so it made perfect sense to support the Franschhoek Literary Festival when the opportunity arose.
Aiming to bring together a broad cross-section of South African writers and international authors, the festival promises to inspire, inform and challenge audiences. There is something for everyone as fringe events include writing workshops and discussion groups, poetry, theater performances and contemporary and classical music concerts. The heady mix of literature, politics and current affairs, special interest, poetry, creativity, light reading, humour and controversy is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. This year’s highlights include writing and visual storytelling workshops; a wide selection of events to help you make sense of your political and environmental concerns; loads of murder and crime, romance and rich local fiction; history, abundant wildlife, humour and humanity. Expect to rub shoulders with the likes of Simon Sebag Montefiore (Written in History), Heather Morris (The Tattooist of Auschwitz), Zapiro and Mike Wills (WTF), Chike Frankie Edozien (Lives of Great Men), Ingrid Winterbach (The Troubled Times of Magrieta Prinsloo), Rutendo Tavengerwei (The Colours that
Blind), plus a host of other fascinating authors and panel chairs both new and renowned. If you love reading, writing, eating, expanding your mind and/ or chilling with a glass of your favourite Porcupine Ridge vino, the Franschhoek Literary Festival 2019 is the place to be. The Festival runs from 17 to 19 May 2019 and is preceded by the Book Week for Young Readers. Starting at 10h00 and ending at 17h00, up to nine one-hour events run concurrently with half an hour between each (except where otherwise stated). Browse through the programme at www.flf.co.za and familiarise yourself with the authors before heading off to www.webtickets.co.za to buy your tickets. in association with

The Mentors: Pioneering Wines, Inspired by the Vines
SITUATED on the outskirts of Paarl, the vast KWV production cellars are, at 24 hectares, the largest single winery in the southern hemisphere, producing upwards of 15 million litres of wine each year. Yet hidden away beneath the sea of warehouse roofs and rows of massive fermentation tanks you’ll find a special corner of this award-winning cellar; a tiny space of small tanks and hand-labelled barrels. This is the home of The Mentors. Since its launch in 2006, The Mentors range has established itself as one of the most sought-after premium brands in the South African wine landscape. Built around a philosophy of expressing terroir and pioneering new wines and wine-making techniques, it’s a portfolio that showcases the founding philosophy of KWV, and the rich history and depth of expertise at one of South Africa’s leading wine producers. Winemaker Izele van Blerk, is renowned for pushing the boundaries and experimenting with different coopers techniques. The insights from this unique cellar, often home to postgraduate oenology students trialling pioneering new winemaking techniques, were initially put to use in KWV’s extensive range of wines. But the winemaking team soon realised that the boundary-breaking approach in The Mentors cellar was leading to remarkable terroir-driven wines that deserved their own spotlight. Though the first wines were bottled in 2006, it was in 2009 that The Mentors range took flight. While a permanent portfolio of eight wines – Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Noir, Petit Verdot, Pinotage, Orchestra and Canvas – are released under The Mentors label each year, Van Blerk and the winemaking team have the enviable freedom of pursuing innovative new varietals and blends from every harvest. Each year they take their cue from the vineyards of the Cape winelands, in deciding which wines deserve a space in The Mentors cellar. With the vineyards providing the inspiration for each vintage, being guided by the very essence of each site – and expressing it in the cellar – is the driving philosophy behind this terroir-driven selection. The winemakers work closely with KWV’s viticultural team, led by Chief Viticulturist Marco Ventrella, to understand each and every vineyard. There is also an unwavering commitment to quality in The Mentors cellar, with meticulous attention to detail from pressing time to punch-downs, fermentation approach to barrel selections.
The art of blending is a key consideration in The Mentors cellar, and the winemakers pour enormous effort into retaining the guiding character of each vineyard, while ensuring the final blend is greater than the sum of its parts. Their success is evident in the two red blends in The Mentors range: the enigmatic Rhône-Style Canvas, and classical Bordeaux-style Orchestra. The permanent range is complemented by an everchanging line-up of exclusive limited-releases each year, the choice of cultivar reflecting, simply, what has been the best performer in the vineyards that year. Exceptional. It’s a word that has long defined The Mentors, and for Van Blerk it’s a process of constant refinement. A process of discovering new ways to express the remarkable vineyards of the Western Cape winelands, and translating the inspiration of the vine into the bottle. Just as the range evolves with each harvest, so 2018 will mark a subtle adjustment of The Mentors packaging, with revamped labelling and a switch from screw cap closures to high-quality cork. The Mentors tasting experience at the KWV Wine Emporium has also been reimagined, with a duo of tasting journeys on offer. For the hungry, four wines from The Mentors range have been paired with artisan pies handmade in a local bakery, the perfect showcase for these food-friendly premium wines. Expect the likes of The Mentors Chenin Blanc alongside a chicken curry pasticcio, or The Mentors Canvas paired with a proudly South African bobotie pie. For those with a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Pairing is equally inventive, with handcrafted chocolates unlocking new layers of flavour, from herbaceous notes in The Mentors Orchestra to the inspired pairing of gooseberry-infused white chocolate with The Mentors Sauvignon Blanc. KWV Wine Emporium is situated at Kohler Street, Paarl. For more information call 021 807 3007/8 or visit the website www.kwvwineemporium.co.za.

Space is the Place 牛屄死了 AT EVERARD READ FRANSCHHOEK GALLERY
Lucinda Mudge’s new collection of slab built vases draw inspiration from the controversial relationship between China and Africa. The powerful narratives from the Chinese immigrants and from the African communities with whom they interact are told using symbols and icons from the two cultures. The Chinese text 牛屄死了 that appears in all the works literally translates as “fucking awesome to the point of death.” Lucinda Mudge’s extraordinary vases are getting more complex and demanding with rich and intricate detailing yet beneath their glimmering, sparkling surfaces is a world both familiar and faintly, futuristically alien which simmers with paranoia and tension. Lucinda Mudge is a contemporary South African artist working primarily in the medium of ceramics. She has work in major corporate and private collections nationally and internationally, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Guernsey, the Netherlands, Italy and Russia. Lucinda’s work was exhibited at the Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain, as part of the exhibition Making Africa (2015).
