The Ongoing Evolution of Bosjes

BOSJES Estate, situated in the scenic Breede River valley is brimming with new energy, with a new high design pantry style coffee shop and farm shop set amid the landscaped indigenous gardens. The outdoor spaces were key to the design of the new gardens where guests can enjoy the new BOSJES Spens and the BOSJES Winkel which blend effortlessly into the new gardens and broader landscape, a testament to the creative collaboration between architect Coetzee Steyn, of Steyn Studio, and Square One Landscape Architects. The Winkel is a contemporary interpretation of a country store, curated by acclaimed interior designer Liam Mooney who has filled the space with a covetable collection of bespoke wares, local crafts and upcycled décor. The Spens, blends the best elements of a café, coffee shop and well-stocked country pantry. Talented pastry chef Rafieq Jacobs and chef Kim Cox lead the kitchen team with an array of delicious dishes from breakfast to lazy afternoon picnics. The landscaped gardens are spread across three sloping terraces, connected by a curving pathway that provide universal access while creating a visual link between the woodland landscape, forested play areas, spacious lawns and conservation garden planted with endangered renosterveld. Circular sandpits for children reference South Africa’s traditional farm dams and reservoirs, while the dedicated children’s play area equipment includes kid-friendly farming implements, sandpits and splash-pads. The Boombrug, a treetop-walkway with panoramic views is set alongside zip-lines and entertaining clamber-frames for kids.

Fancy a Bourbon or Whisky?

CELEBRATE WORLD WHISKY DAY WITH ONLY THE BEST THIS SEASON!

Whether you’re into a bourbon or prefer a traditional whiskey, make your World Whisky Day memorable with the world’s number one selling bourbon, Jim Beam and a new generation blend Suntory Whisky Toki. Appreciated by the world’s most discerning whiskey palates, Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon has perfected the art of bourbon creation through maintaining consistency and a smooth top notch flavour. Created in 1788 by Jacob Beam who used his father’s whiskey recipe to distil his excess corn into a new, sweeter kind of whiskey-bourbon. Jim Beam is aged for no less than two years in brand new charred oak barrels which lends to a welcoming mixture of toasted oak, some sweetness and hints of oak vanilla and spice. For over 225 years and surviving a lengthy prohibition, the Beam family has stayed true to their bourbon and to each other. With the popularity of Japanese whisky swiftly rising across the globe, Suntory Whisky Toki embodies a proud heritage.

Toki, meaning ‘time’ in Japanese, comes from the House of Suntory’s globally acclaimed Hakushu, Yamazaki and Chita Distilleries, bringing together old and new to create a blended Japanese whisky that is both ground breaking and timeless. Toki Whisky features exquisite balance, harmony and oneness, incorporating the singular Hakushu American white oak cask malt whisky and Chita heavy-type grain whisky, giving a clean taste with notes of sweetness and vanilla. The pairing of these seemingly dissimilar but deeply accordant whiskies combined their exquisite balance of subtlety and refinement sparking a powerful and creative energy in the world of whisky. Available in major retailers nationwide.

A New Dawn for Stellenzicht Wines

One of Stellenbosch’s most beloved wineries that once heralded a new era for South African wine has been transformed. The famed winery lies within Stellenbosch’s Upper Blaauwklippen Valley, in the foothills of the Helderberg mountain. Stellenzicht was acquired four years ago by Baron Hans von Staff-Reitzenstein, a renowned German wine collector with a passion for South Africa. An experienced wine team was assembled, and upgrades were set in motion that included the removal of alien vegetation, re-establishing indigenous wilderness species and an intense focus on the wines. A vine re-planting programme was conceived with the help of renowned viticulturists Dawid Saayman and the late Prof. Eben Archer. The cultivars that were settled on as Stellenzicht flagbearers were Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon. Strangely shaped rocks, uncovered on the site, suggested a tale that was even older than the farm’s contemporary history. Later determined to be Acheulean hand-axes, ancient pear-shaped stone tools named after the French region where they were first discovered. “It was a lightbulb moment,” says winemaker L’Ré Burger, who joined the property in 2017. “Irrespective of changing ownerships and farming activities, the rocks have stood the test of time. Now they speak through the wines.” From vine to bottle, preserving this voice of the land in the wines has been a founding principle of the new range. The portfolio now consists of three ranges.
