Bistro Bliss at La Paris

The La Paris Bistro, a chic restaurant and deli, with an on-site bakery, is the newest luxury eatery in the Franschhoek Valley. La Paris Estate dates back to 1699 and many of the original buildings have been meticulously restored; their gabled facades and chalk white walls contrasting with the lush green gardens. Chef Nico Vorster brings years of experience in fine cuisine at 5 star establishments. Described as elegant food with daring flavours combined with familiar favourites. A farmto-table philosophy means that wholesome, fresh food is sourced locally and responsibly. The Bistro bar has a selection of wines and craft spirits showcases local farms and distilleries. There are over 70 locally-sourced wines, craft beers on tap and the barman slings all the modern-favourite cocktails. On colder days, the Bistro offers two couch corners with welcoming wood-burning fireplaces, rugs and coffee tables for an afternoon with coffee or early evening with red wine and platters – either cheese or charcuterie. The La Paris Bistro welcomes families. Children are catered for with a special menu including milkshakes and yummy

deserts. There is also a children’s outdoor play area with jungle gym, slides and benches. Close by the estate horses, Applejack and Freckles, keep a watchful eye. The Deli is a fresh produce and supply store, carrying local and imported products. The Bistro Bakery bakes fresh breads for the Deli, with the fresh bread smell welcoming shoppers daily. There is also a comprehensive selection of fruits and vegetables, cheeses and meats, and biltong which can be bought in strips or sliced by Deli staff. Freshly-made Deli Sandwiches are also available for takeaway, along with coffee, juices, teas and cakes by the slice. In addition to supplying the Deli and the Bistro kitchen, the Bistro Bakery bakes an extensive range of delicious cakes, from birthday cakes to impressive wedding cakes; convenient as La Paris hosts weddings in three stunning venues: The Lyceum, The Winery, and outdoor venues in the Rose Garden. The estate is a delight to explore and take in, from the white horses in their paddock, to the manicured gardens. La Paris Bistro is conveniently located in the Winelands, along the R301 between Franschhoek and Paarl. For reservations www.laparis.co.za/bistro or on 021 867 0171.

New Grande Provence Chef Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate has appointed Guy Bennett as new Executive Chef at The Restaurant. A seasoned chef, Guy has worked his way up the ranks alongside some of Cape Town’s most celebrated culinary masters the likes of Michael Deg, Bertus Basson, Reuben Riffel and top pastry chef, André Steyn. Guy takes over from Darren Badenhorst, who has opened his own restaurant, Le Coin Français, in Franschhoek.

Sunset Concert Gardens at Montpellier in the

“Cooking with passion, day after day, bouncing ideas off my mentors and watching guests enjoying our food, have made me the chef I am today,” says Guy who considers his appointment as Executive Chef at Grande Provence his “biggest and brightest venture to date.” When it comes to his own style, Guy is influenced by classic and modern techniques, both local and international, incorporating old and new school approaches to achieving a finished dish. Creating food for all tastes, he includes light, fresh and rich dishes in his menu.

New Grande Provence Executive Chef Guy Bennett

“I consider all the aspects that make up a good dish: sweetness, bitterness, acidity and texture,” says Guy. Being centred on a common goal to serve amazing food consistently, is paramount: “Involving my teammates is important to me, allowing them room for input on the dishes they cook and serve. I encourage my fellow chefs to think about food, to be inspired by what they produce.” Sourcing the best seasonal ingredients and working closely with local suppliers and farmers is another important aspect of Guy’s food philosophy: “I like to know where the produce comes from, who grows it and how they go about doing that. I need to know what I’m working with and that ethical practices were involved. By working closely with producers I know what’s on offer and what is popping up with the change of the seasons,” he adds. While travelling to different food destinations is an important part of his culinary quest, Guy draws inspiration from many different things: “Music, meaningful relationships with friends, colleagues and family, our beautiful surrounds. Being in nature, staying active and fit, and eating out are big priorities in my life. Life is about experiences. There is so much out there to see, taste and absorb!” Beauty and flavour are important aspects of his dishes, attributes Guy would like to associate with his ever evolving menus are “uncomplicated, accessible, varied and tasty, and always allowing for new creations to make an appearance.” “I’d like to create an experience, a platform of sorts, where diners can put the rest of their lives on pause for a few hours and experience an amazing meal with good company. Great food and wine, an amazing setting and good times.” www.grandeprovence.co.za | 021 876 8600

La Couronne adds a special touch to the TransCape

After seven days of challenging mountain bike trails, participants in the TransCape mountain bike race can again look forward to a sea of tranquillity when the beautiful La Couronne Wine Farm welcome them home next year. The annual 614km journey, which starts in Knysna on February 4, will finish in Franschhoek a week later and La Couronne are planning a memorable finish. The wine farm, several centuries old, will be extending their close association with the TransCape, having been involved with the event as a venue and wine sponsor from its inception. La Couronne general manager Eldorette Carinus said they had no hesitation in coming on board when approached by race founder Lenore Collett in 2015. “I got very involved with the planning with Lenore and it was exciting to be part of this very special mountain bike race right from the start.” “We will have a number of new vintages for riders to taste throughout the week and plans are also in place to make the finish venue a lot bigger.” La Couronne will be offering great food and wine with a relaxing atmosphere, beautiful views of the mountains. ASG Events chief executive Wynand de Villiers said La Couronne were much more than just the finish venue. “Eldorette is a total TransCape disciple and as a competitor holds the race very close to her heart. The event is all about people and relationships, that’s what makes the finish such a highlight.“ “We’re incredibly thankful for their significant contribution throughout and, when you get to the finish, the farm is beautiful and personifies the Cape Winelands in every aspect.” Visit www.transcapemtb.co.za for more details.

Franschhoek is about to become even more famous

What started out as friendly banter between two friends on a golf course, quickly turned into a powerful partnership when celebrity chef Reuben Riffel bought into Franschhoek businessman Alex McCormack’s vision to produce a world-class range of hand-crafted beers, bearing the name of the South African town famous for its wine and culinary delights. Now there was an opportunity for the region to also become famous for world-class beer! Alex McCormack, original founder of The Franschhoek Beer Co, together with the other founding partner, American businessman Frank Rodriguez (a Franschhoek resident for more than a decade) and brewmaster Olaf Morgenroth, have spent the past two years travelling the world for inspiration, experimenting with different recipes and ingredients and applying their collective skill and passion to develop a range of beers that are truly worthy of the standards the Franschhoek Valley sets for products from this origin. Each of the hand-crafted beers (there are four launch styles) is made by dedicated brewmaster Olaf Morgenroth with the purest Franschhoek mountain spring water and the best quality, imported hops and malt available, to ensure a superior quality beer that the team are confident will be enjoyed by discerning beer lovers all over the world. Specialized brewing equipment, imported from Italy, ensures that the superior taste of every handcrafted bottle of beer remains consistent. In addition to the beers, chef Reuben Riffel plays mentor to well-known chefs Nick Oosthuizen and Julandi Groenewald to bring a new food

experience to the Franschhoek Valley with their restaurant, The Franschhoek Beer Co [Tap & Eat]. Inspired by the same pursuit of sustainable, quality ingredients and craftsmanship that is the hallmark of the beers, the restaurant features a beautifully curated menu offering generous portions of fresh, tasty dishes that perfectly pair with beer – many sourced from the farm on which the brewery is situated. The restaurant features a fresh seasonal menu serving local produce with a traditional approach – bistrostyle soul food. The atmosphere is sophisticated and elegant, but also comfortable and casual, making it the perfect place to park off with good friends for a quick bite or a long lunch, whether inside the restaurant, with its very special view of the brewery tanks, or on the expansive deck outside, under the oak trees and next to the sprawling lawns that also make The Franschhoek Beer Co a very family friendly destination. The Restaurant and Tasting room at the Brewery will be open to the public 6 days a week from December 2017. Visit www.franschhoekbeerco.co.za for more information on opening hours and stockists of the beers. Or send an email to info@franschhoekbeerco.co.za

International Cabernet Franc Day

Monday, 4 December 2017, is International Cabernet Franc Day. To celebrate this Holden Manz Wine Estate is presenting a Winemakers’ Dinner on Friday 1 December 2017 focused entirely on this wonderful red varietal. This event will also see the launch of the new vintage 2015 Holden Manz Reserve Cabernet Franc which will be presented by Holden Manz cellarmaster Thierry Haberer. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy Cabernet Franc from Raats Family Wines (Gavin Bruwer Slabbert), Rainbow’s End who will be showing their sold-out Cabernet Franc Limited Release 2015 (Anton Malan) and Anthonij Rupert Wines (Cabernet Franc 2010). All wines will be paired with a specific dish specially selected to show off the range and flexibility of this varietal. The last few years have seen a revival in the fortunes of Cabernet Franc. Better known as a blending component it is now increasingly being presented as a single varietal. Cabernet Franc is believed to have been established in south west France in the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu took vine cuttings from the Loire Valley. By the 18th century Cabernet Franc was established in Bordeaux, particularly in Pomerol, St. Emilion and Fronsac. In 1997 DNA evidence confirmed theories that Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc had crossed to form Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the finished wine depends much on the growing climate. Wines from the Loire are typically lighter in colour with aromas of raspberry and bell pepper while Cabernet Franc from warmer climates is deeper in colour and shows notes of violets, fynbos, cassis and tobacco. The Franschhoek Wine Valley produces a diverse selection of Cabernet Franc in different styles. Producers of note include Chamonix, Lynx, My Wyn, Môreson, La Petite Ferme, Boekenhoutskoof, Anthonij Rupert, as well as Holden Manz. Cabernet Franc plantings account for just under 1000 hectares in South Africa and makes up less than 0.5% of total production. 2016 saw the inaugural South African Cabernet Franc Challenge. The initial 32 entries grew to 50 entries in 2017, demonstrating the interest in this beautiful varietal. Franschhoek wines have been represented in the Top 6 each year which confirms the Franschhoek Wine Valley as a prime growing environment for Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Franc is a food friendly wine which pairs particularly well with roasted chicken, pork belly, slow roasted duck breast, hearty fish stew and a selection of artisanal cheeses.

To make reservations for the winemakers dinner, call 021 876 2738. For e-mail enquiry please contact Cobi at restaurant@holdenmanz.com.

Local Artist Carol Thorns Carol Thorns, a local Franschhoek musician, has been spreading her musical wings this year with a new project, Rosanthorn Cello Trio, and exciting international travel. Carol, who graduated Cum Laude from Rhodes University in South Africa, is an industry pioneer of the electric string genre. Her debut solo cello album ‘Fireflies In The Rain’ was nominated Best Instrumental Album 2010 at the South African Music Awards. Recently back from solo performances in Macedonia and Dubia, Carol will be entertaining locals at Montpellier Farm on 19 November with her popular group CODA Africa which blends electric strings with jazz sax, African vocals and a house DJ. Carol is well known for her unique act, The Bubble, which made an appearance at the Country Kids Fundraiser earlier this year at Goederust. This magical act made a huge impression on local toddlers and parents and we predict there will be a new generation of cellists from Franschhoek as a result.
