Leeu Estates in the Cape Winelands Secures 5-Star Premium Status
Leeu Estates, the flagship property of Leeu Collection, is the only hotel in the Cape Winelands to have achieved the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA)’s new 5-Star Premium status. This was introduced in April 2019 to recognise exceptional 5-star properties that exist at the pinnacle of quality of facilities, amenities, and service. This aspirational level, reserved for the most luxurious product offerings in South Africa, allows the TGCSA, a business unit of South African Tourism, to recognise establishments that achieve an outstanding level of product quality above and beyond other 5-star properties. To ensure that this extremely high standard is maintained, the TGCSA 5-Star Premium grading status is valid for a year, after which the hotels are subject to another review to decide whether they retain the highest grade.
To date, just five establishments in South Africa have been awarded this 5-Star Premium status, with Leeu Estates being the only property in the Cape Winelands to be honoured. The other four properties are The Royal Malewane Lodge and Lion Sands Ivory lodge (both in Mpumalanga), The Silo in Cape Town and Birkenhead House in Hermanus. Analjit Singh, founder of the Leeu Collection, believes it is the dedicated team at Leeu Estates who have made this possible through their “hard work, enthusiasm, and true hospitality.” Leeu Collection offers guests a diverse choice of unforgettable experiences in the sublimely beautiful Franschhoek valley, just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town. The portfolio comprises three unique properties: Leeu Estates, the mountainside country house hotel, spa, and boutique winery that has been awarded the 5-Star Premium grading, as well as Leeu House, an exclusive boutique hotel in the heart of Franschhoek, and Le Quartier Français, a romantic hotel with two independent villas. Roodeberg Celebrates its 70Th Anniversary and Scores a Hat Trick!
New Roodeberg 1949 is a modern return to the roots for SA wine, with the launch of ‘1949’, a meticulously crafted, limited edition commemorative blend.
Continuing the Roodeberg tradition as a blend with universal appeal, Roodeberg 1949 lends new vitality through the added intrigue and dimension of exciting contemporary varieties from sought-after vineyard sites, starting a new chapter in the illustrious Roodeberg story.
The maiden 2017 vintage of the Roodeberg 1949 was crafted from Stellenbosch grapes grown on Grondves Farm, one of the primary sites for the development of mother plant material
for the South African wine industry. Given Roodeberg’s rich history and international footprint, it is particularly fitting that this new ultra-premium red blend that straddles tradition and innovation comes from this special terroir. Winemaker Louwritz Louw follows a rigorous selection process from the vineyard to the barrel that is the bedrock of Roodeberg 1949.
Launched in 1949, Roodeberg is a cherished South African original that has stood the test of time. Over the past 70 years, this signature red has evolved from the master’s original blend to an accessible, contemporary classic. Its rich heritage and colourful tapestry of wine folklore is the stuff of legends.
This concentrated, deep ruby red blend has generous aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and vanilla, followed by cinnamon, sweet spice, and ripe, juicy dark berry fruit. Firm tannins lend structure and an enduring finish.
Developed originally as an honest expression of Cape red wine and the brainchild of Dr Charles Niehaus, a legendary pioneer of the South African wine industry who crafted the first vintage from the 1946 harvest. Inspired by a glorious sunset over the Paarl mountains, the name, Roodeberg, harks back to the vineyards of Rothenberg near Geisenheim in Germany.
Roodeberg resonates in the hearts and minds of wine lovers the world over and 2019 has seen this beloved brand break the venerable 90-point barrier with three signature blends, scoring a hat trick in 2019 Atkin SA Wine Report. www.roodeberg.com

ART
The Boutique Gallery is Expanding! Almost three years ago, William Vaesen and his wife Ellen Christiaen opened a new gallery in Franschhoek: a collection of works of art, both from South Africa and Europe, made it possible for The Boutique Gallery to carve itself a niche in the world of art galleries. The work of foreign artists such as William Sweetlove and Isabelle Scheltjens, was amplified by the latest art works of local artists such as Samuel Allerton, Sarah Danes Jarrett, Gordon Froud and many more. exhibition was created, in which you will not only get to see the joyful endearing side of gorillas, but also the threats these beautiful animals are faced with. ‘The Soul Series’ exhibition runs from October 26th until November 15th.
Three years and as many new locations later (Camps Bay, Sint-Martens-Latem and Knokke), The Boutique Gallery has reached maturity and is ready for a new phase. The gallery will be closed for about ten days mid-October and its space shall be doubled. The Boutique Gallery will re-open its doors during the Art Franschhoek weekend and invites everyone to raise a glass to a new gallery and a new season.
And subsequently, The Boutique Gallery enters summer season, with its annual ‘Summer Exhibition’. Artists from around the world have been working hard these past months, to present their new high-end works of art, as of the 16th of November, in the renewed space.
Artist Samuel Allerton, resident of Franschhoek, will have the honour of being the first on stage with his solo exhibition ‘The Soul Series’. Earlier this year, Samuel travelled to the Virunga Park in Congo, where he got inspired for a genuine gorilla exhibition. And as a result, this gripping

Land Rewoven Presented by La Motte Museum
The La Motte Museum introduces a new art exhibition entitled ‘Land Rewoven’. In collaboration with Barnard Gallery, this new addition to the Franschhoek Valley estate’s acclaimed offering comprises a considered body of work by MJ Lourens in conjunction with selected paintings of JH Pierneef from the La Motte Museum collection. The inspiration for this exhibition lies in recontextualising Pierneef’s well-known oeuvre within a contemporary dialogue. The exhibition explores the interpretation of land by two South African artists from different generations, whose work could broadly be classified within the same genre. Underscored by the philosophies of Willem van Konijnenburg, Pierneef’s work represents harmony and order in nature through a strict use of linearity and geometry. Lourens’ work, despite elements of visual resemblance, subtly resists the perfect harmony and rationality of the untainted traditional landscape. ART EXPERIENCE: A weekly exhibition walkabout will be presented on an alternating basis by the artist MJ Lourens and La Motte Museum Curator, Elzette de Beer. The Art Experience
concludes with a glass of wine from the award-winning Pierneef Collection and a Winelands Cheese Plate from Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant. Reservations are essential. Walkabout only: R80 per person | Walkabout with cheese plate and wine: R250. Visitors are invited to meet Lourens for an artist led exhibition walkabout on the following dates: Tuesday 19 November 10:00 Tuesday 17 December 10:00 Tuesday 7 January 10:00 The exhibition will run until 12 January 2020 Tuesdays to Sundays: 09:00-17:00 Entrance is free. museum@la-motte.co.za
DEEP IN THE QUIET BY ANGELA BANKS Angela Banks is a fine artist living and working in Johannesburg. She received a BA (Fine Arts) in 1999 and MA (Fine Arts) in 2003 from the University of Pretoria. She has since exhibited in various group and solo shows and has been on residencies in both France and China and these residencies afforded her the opportunity to engage with European as well as Eastern artists. Banks is interested in what the individual projects but more importantly, she is after what lies behind the projection. She describes her work as ‘a surface search for the hidden reality or identity of the individual, the real story behind the façade’. The idea of the masquerade vs truth with regards to identity stems from her studies she did for her Masters in which she delved into Mikhail Bakhtin’s carnival theory. He differentiates between the ‘official’ world where one has a true and real official identity, and the carnival world that allows one an unofficial, ‘made up’ identity. Banks finds that most of life is a masquerade, where the ‘made up’ has become commonplace. The disguise is aided by the various masks with which we adorn ourselves in order to feel accepted or powerful or ‘good enough’. In previous works the artist worked with hybrid human/animal figures (therianthropes), where the animal head became the mask worn to either hide or enhance the individual’s identity. In her latest body of work, the animal becomes the subjects’ companion, confidant, or counterpart. The depiction of the relationship between human and animal stems back to our prehistoric ancestors who shared their world in paint on cave walls. As John Berger notes, our first paintings and symbols were animals, paradoxically ‘what distinguished man from animals was born out of our relationship with them’. It therefore makes sense to Banks that visually juxtaposing human and animal exposes the large and small intricacies of our humanity. Who we are at the core is evident in who we are like, or not like, in the animal world. Banks looks at the relationship created by the human and animal cast together within a specific space or context, in order to discover more about the character of the painted person. “The first thing one notices about Angela Banks’ work is the meticulous and disciplined formality of the paintings. They seem to have an almost Victorian innocence to them, but this is deceptive, and her subjects look right back at the viewer with a gaze both cool and self-assured. Banks has created a small world all of her own, as true artists have always done, and it is one that is coherent and with an internal logic that is immensely attractive but that also has a slightly uneasy edge to the charm. I find an almost irresistible reminder of that fine modern writer, Phillip Pullman and “His Dark Materials” in her use of animals (he calls them “daemons”) as a foil to her human subjects. The animals are not anthropomorphised or “cute”, nor are they pets, and they live their lives next to the humans who have such a limpid and clear-eyed view of our own rackety world. She works slowly and her output is small and thus known so far only to a few collectors, but Angela Banks’ lovely exhibition will give enormous pleasure to those who see it.” – Trent Read
