Swing Into Spring with Grande Provence

Grande Provence, the landmark 1694 Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek, has gone back to its culinary roots with a new Heritage Spring Tasting Menu.

SUNDOWNERS

The menu offers a wide selection of fresh, local ingredients, expertly prepared with Chef Marvin’s own twist on South African heirloom recipes. With dishes such as fire-roasted beetroot, pink beetroot purée, honeycomb walnut praline, and chevin with suurvytjies dressing; Saldana bay oyster, fynbos-infused kimchi, fresh plums, oyster kaiings, and dune spinach; free-range chicken breast, stewed apricots, pickle curried onions, cream cabbage, and gingerbread jus; and passionfruit curd, buchu ice cream, and boeber with meringues, the menu is a collection of true South African heritage food. A must-try this spring! For something more relaxed, enjoy a country-style picnic under majestic oaks in beautifully landscaped gardens at The Bistro. Packed to the brim with delicious artisanal foods, this is pure indulgence for the whole family to enjoy. Treats include fresh seasonal fruits; tomato, basil, and feta tartlet; estate-made hummus; local cheeses and preserves; salad; Danish pastries; charcuterie; farm-baked ciabatta; and a decadent Valrohna chocolate brownie. Children and vegetarians are catered for too. The picnic basket comes with a bottle of Grande Provence’s popular Angels Tears wine, as well as still or sparkling water. The Grande Country Picnic is available in the summer months from October 2019 to April 2020 at R700 for two people sharing or R350 for a single basket. The cost per child under the age of 10 is R150 for the kiddie’s basket. Another stylish spring experience matches Méthode Cap Classique and fresh West Coast oysters. Served from the oyster bar under towering oaks in Grande Provence’s beautiful sculpture garden, the MCC and oyster pairing offers three uniquely-dressed oysters to complement the character and personality of each of the Grande Provence Brut MCCs at R180 per person. An addition, The Bistro is offering heritage breakfasts, such as egg benedict, omelettes, and granola bowls, from 10h00 daily. Culinary Heritage – it is all in the sharing!

Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant has always been about sharing: sharing food stories and sharing food favourites. And it is this personal concept of heritage cuisine that is the inspiration behind the restaurant’s new offering. Beautifully creative, every single morsel served in the elegant environment of the restaurant shares a line from the South African food story. With its refined and calm ambience perfect for extended lunch hours, Pierneef à La Motte invites guests to start their meal with shared dishes inspired by the various food cultures and stories from our rich culinary heritage – a variety of breads, spreads, salads, and meats. The family-style starters are accompanied by condiments from Granny’s pantry – fruit and vegetables, pickled or preserved, chakalaka or chutney, kaiings or kluitjies ... a big part of our collective food heritage lies in these additions and Chef Eric Bulpitt’s communal starter serves as an innovative introduction to our diverse culinary traditions. Keeping with the heritage theme but without losing the sophistication it is renowned for, Pierneef à La Motte’s à la carte menu offers a choice of main courses, individually plated with Bulpitt’s signature modern interpretation. Expect a selection that interprets authenticity and wholesomeness with the latest culinary trends. All dishes are introduced with La Motte

Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche’s wine recommendations, which are available at estate prices. However, the acclaimed wine list also includes other interesting South African, as well as international wine choices.

Desserts can be ordered as an additional course. The dessert menu is a trip down memory lane, revealing a legacy of nostalgic sweets, as well as a selection of South African cheeses, preserves, and lavash.

The two-course menu of a shared starter and main course costs R335 per person (wine and service fee excluded).

In addition, the restaurant offers a lighter option for guests who are in the mood for something to enjoy after a wine tasting, mountainside hike, or visit to the La Motte museum. Choose the Winelands Cheese Platter or a seasonal Farm Plate – both options include a glass of wine at R150 pp. In line with the principle of heritage food, menu choices are ethical and sustainable, making use of seasonal, local, and artisan ingredients, while in the South African tradition of hospitality, dishes are brought to the table with love and generosity. Franschhoek Uncorked: Celebrate Spring

This year’s Franschhoek Uncorked Festival is around the corner and is the perfect excuse to enjoy the warmer weather as you travel from farm to farm sampling some of the superb wines the Franschhoek Valley is known for. One day is not enough time to truly appreciate this magnificent region, so the weekend of 14 and 15 September has been set aside for this social calendar highlight. Participating wineries will be showcasing some of their crowd favourites, as well as a handful of new release gems. With some festival specials on offer now is the ideal time to stock up for the end-ofyear holiday season. There will also be added attractions to ensure a truly memorable Uncorked visit. Think: delicious brunches, live music, ‘out of the box’ pairings, art exhibitions, old school lawn games, barrel tastings, and much more. Be sure to pop into the following participating wineries during the weekend: Allée Bleue Wines, Black Elephant Vintners, Boekenhoutskloof, Boschendal Wine Estate, Dieu Donné Vineyards, GlenWood Vineyards, Holden Manz Wine Estate, La Bourgogne Farm, La Bri, Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards, Lynx Wines, Mont Rochelle, Môreson, Noble Hill, Plaisir De Merle, Rickety Bridge Winery, Topiary Wines

The wheat, rye and other grains all come from South African farmers that use biodynamic farming methods to ensure superior grains that taste better, and are also better for the environment. Only stoneground flour milled gently between two stones at low temperatures is used, retaining all the grain’s natural goodness, including insoluble fibre, magnesium, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, iron, zinc, vitamins B1, B2, B3, E, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. With natural fermentation, the dough contains the same friendly cultures as homemade yoghurt that work chemically on the whole grains during the fermentation process to make the most of flavours and nutrients, making it much easier for the body to digest. Naturally fermented bread is more gut-friendly, and keeps you fuller for longer. Schoon Bread Café has brought their famous bread and pastries to Franschhoek’s beautiful main road, just steps away from the Huguenot Monument. Visitors and the community alike, are invited to enjoy their favourite Schoon coffee, breakfast or hot-pressed sandwich in the palm tree-lined courtyard, or stock up on picnic supplies – Schoon Franschhoek offers fresh bread, local cheeses and cured meats, our delicious pastries, chocolate, milk, flour, eggs, jams and more. Delicious food, sustainable and real ingredients, a sense of community – and a particular penchant for quality bread served in a warm, intimate atmosphere. Contact 010 446 9882 | www.schoon.co.za

The Rupert Museum Reopens its Doors

With the recent reopening of the Rupert Museum after extensive renovations to the space, visitors are in for a treat with the four current exhibitions on show. THE CAPE TOWN TRIENNIALS – THEN & NOW

TRACINGS – THE RICHARD TOWNLEY JOHNSON ARCHIVE

This exhibition presents a selection of works by celebrated contemporary artists, who exhibited in The Cape Town Triennial shows between 1982 and 1991. Currently featuring the work of William Kentridge, Willie Bester, Penelope Siopis, Peter Schütz, Keith Dietrich, and Philippa Hobbs. Further rotations will include works by Marion Arnold, Deborah Bell, Steven Cohen, Sfiso KaMkame, Karel Nel, Stanley Pinker, Helen Sebidi, and Diane Victor.

Richard ‘Ginger’ Townley Johnson was granted sponsorship by the Rembrandt van Rijn Art Foundation in the mid-70s to continue his various travels and explorations to further trace rock art sites. Johnson’s reproductions of rock art consist of an artist quality and atmosphere, as his techniques of tracing and reproductions were employed to closely resemble not just the originals but also the rock face. The archive collection holds 1,631 paintings.

THE JOHANNESBURG STATION PANELS – PIERNEEF’S JOURNEY Artist JH Pierneef’s most acclaimed public commission was completed between 1929 and 1932. The Johannesburg Station Panels have been characterised as the epitome of the South African landscape genre. The exhibition looks into the artist’s journey by the inclusion of preparatory sketches and linocuts dating as early as 1913.

FACES & FIGURES – SELECTED 20TH CENTURY SOUTH AFRICAN ARTISTS Portraiture captures the relationship between sitter and artist in holding the likeness of the sitter. Faces and Figures explores the work of the following 20th century South African artists – Gerard Bhengu, Irma Stern, Anton van Wouw, George Pemba, Maggie Laubser, Gerard Sekoto, and Moses Kottler. The Rupert Museum has recently launched Museum Saturday, a programme running the last Saturday of each month. Expect exciting activities, like artist conversation with Keith Dietrich, Willie Bester, and Thania Petersen; multi-sensory drawing workshops for adults facilitated by artist Katherine Bull; and art activities for children. Emerging as a sought-after sous chef, Hirsch spent some time learning new tricks of the trade at Cape Town’s illustrious The Test Kitchen before being offered his first Head Chef role at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff’s fine dining restaurant in Johannesburg. FINE WINE WEEK In the lead-up to the Strauss & Co Cape Town wine auction, we will be hosting a week of fine wine events. The marquis event is a hedonistic First Growth Bordeaux dinner at Fyn Restaurant, highlighting the 1998 First Growth lot on sale. Tim Atkin MW will host a public tasting of his 95+ point wines, poured by SA’s leading winemakers. Higgo Jacobs and Roland Peens will present another Fine Wine Workshop and, finally, Eben Sadie leads a once-in-a-lifetime vertical tasting of his iconic red, Columella.

Now with new owners, a new restaurant and a refreshed look across its luxury suites, visitors are in for a treat! Entrepreneurs Hansie and Theresa Britz, both born and raised in the charming town of Paarl, acquired the property in early 2019 and immediately set about rejuvenating this icon of the winelands. The estate landscaping has also enjoyed some muchneeded attention. From the cosy lounges and private terraces of the Terrace Suites, impressive views of the replanted, outstretched vineyards in front of the historic manor house and the lush estate gardens, enlivened with indigenous Cape fynbos await.

this meat-focused restaurant. On any given day, you will find Goffe-Wood and his kitchen crew hard at work curing, smoking new delicacies, with selected cuts dry-aged on site in imported German meat-fridges. Brandy is the star of the brand-new Viande Bar, a stylish new addition to the restaurant space. Here cosy couches and a brass bar counter cry out for pre-dinner cocktails and afterdinner digestifs. Besides Viande’s meaty offerings, patrons will also find a few surprises through personal touches from Goffe-Wood’s own repertoire of food fancies. And while the revamped property has welcomed locals and travellers again, the upgrades are only the beginning. Further renovations are underway for the Studio Suites, and future projects include upgrades to the top-tier Stable Suite, and the development of a luxury spa facility. It’s been three hundred years in the making, but it seems Grande Roche Hotel is just getting started!
