Although Dolci Café have been open for a number of years they are one of our favourite light meal and brunch spots in Joburg, and even better news, they have just launched a high tea menu – just in time for the festive season. This Italian owned and run Trattoria and Pastry shop is all about authentic foods, great quality products and artisan cakes, cupcakes and Italian Pastries. Run by husband and wife team, Chef Jackie Righi-Boyd and hubby actor Clayton Boyd, as well as their partner Zoran Mijailovic, Dolci opened in 2015 as a small Italian pasticceria (pastry café) but has evolved into one of the city’s best-loved trattorias, tripling in size along the way. Righi-Boyd comes from a dynasty of restaurateurs and her mother – super-nonna-chef Luciana Righi of Assaggi, Tre Nonni and Amarcord fame – is part of the team in this friendly neighbourhood eatery. Desserts here are a highlight and include Italian pasticcini, tiramisu and the sublime Dolce Della Nonna, Jackie’s grandmother’s and Luciana’s mother’s famous dessert comprised of layers of zabaglioni, cream, amaretti biscuits, pecan nuts and dark chocolate. Although Dolci Café’s focus is Italian, there are some other items on the menu including hamburgers, and tapas such as jalapeño poppers and falafel. The newly introduced High Tea menu is R235 per person and includes 12 deliciously yummy goodies – and is a mixture of sweet and savoury items served on a three tier silver cake server to allow guests to help themselves. Resilience tells the true and complicated story of Mnguni as a South African born-and-raised man who dealt with the Setswana cultural dealings and restrictions in a fast-growing modern country, fresh out of the brutal era of apartheid. Being gay and an artist created obstacles due to the influences of society whereby the identity of man is consistently under siege, misrepresented and always under scrutiny. Inevitably the stories of the LGBTQIA+ community in settings such as this, are not shared often. This work shines the light on people in the community who are different and do not fit into the typical norm of society, it is based on facets of gender expression and cultural identity, tackling the issues whereby there is an ongoing phenomenon, where members of the LGBTQIA+ community perish unnecessarily because of hate.
