Tokara 2021 Olive Oils Express a Bounty of Intense Flavours

As the olive groves come into bloom at Tokara, the family owned Stellenbosch wine and olive estate celebrates the arrival of spring with the release of a brand new vintage of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). A feast of concentrated flavours is the hallmark of the unusually long 2021 harvest. A smaller olive crop than previous years created the opportunity for more precise, selective picking at optimal ripeness. This is particularly evident in the EVOOs from Tokara’s Italian varieties grown on the foothills of the Simonsberg. “We captured the true herbaceous and nutty flavours of these Italian varieties,” says Gert van Dyk, Tokara’s olive oil master and operations manager at the Olive Shed. Making fine olive oil is all about capturing the goodness of the fresh olive in the bottle. Under van Dyk’s watch, the hand-picked olives are pressed in the Olive Shed within 24 hours of being harvested. Tokara EVOOs span the complete olive oil taste spectrum from mild to the more robust. Five cold pressed EVOOs – two single variety oils: the delicately flavoured Mission and the full-flavoured and spicy Frantoio, as well as two more intense multi-varietal

blends, and an unfiltered blend make up the collection. Frantoio, the most important olive variety in Italy is a key component of Tokara’s full flavoured blended olive oils. The Mission variety, which stems from America, is mild and gentle with a finely balanced grassy, herbaceous character and a walnut aftertaste. The Multi-Varietal and Premium EVOO are blended to bring the best characteristics of the various olive varieties with notes of olive leaf, rocket, artichoke and a lovely herbaceous character. Tokara’s single variety or blended EVOOs are delicious simply tossed through crisp salad leaves and transform any dish by enhancing all the other ingredients. Visit the Tokara Delicatessen for complimentary olive oil tastings and purchases. Guided olive oil tasting experience, are also available. www.tokara.com/product/tokara-frantoio-extra-virgin-olive-oil

Celebrate Life’s Everyday Joys with La Motte’s New Vin de Joie Rosé

La Motte has introduced a new addition to its well-known portfolio of wines – a French-style rosé called Vin de Joie. The 2021 La Motte Vin de Joie Rosé is an elegant choice that promises to bring joy. Whether your special time is social or simple – with loved ones around a table or a solitary hour with a book – enjoy them with an elegant glassful of La Motte’s dry and delicate Vin de Joie Rosé! While the inspiration and the style of the La Motte Rosé honours the estate’s French winemaking heritage, the grapes for the wine are a true celebration of South African terroir and its diversity – in more ways than one. Promising to be the perfect glassful for everyday celebrations, the joy in the name and on the label was inspired by one of the true joys of biodiversity of the Cape Winelands – the Blushing Bride. A blend of 71% Grenache, 19% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, the 2021 La Motte Vin de Joie Rosé offers a delicate salmon pink with a tinge of onion skin, typical of a Mediterranean-style rosé. The nose offers subtle, but well-defined

melon, rose petal and nectarine with the charming notes of Turkish delight in the background. The palate is juicy on entry, with a refreshing acidity and lovely lingering nectarine on the aftertaste. Polished and perfect for relaxed get-togethers and lengthy lunches, this refined Rosé is a delightful glass on its own and a versatile choice with food. Enjoy with the simplicity of leafy salads and Mediterranean plates, finely sliced Charcuterie and seafood in all shapes – from summertime sushi to comforting soups in winter. Available at La Motte or la-motte.com at R99.

‘A Space to Breathe’

– THE SPRING 2022 COLLECTION BY KARIN MILLER EXHIBITING AT MANZART GALLERY

‘A Space to Breathe’ explores the retreat to isolation within our curated private spheres as a reaction to the present mayhem of the public light. The women in the series escape into safety and reflection, living pensively in a paradise of their own making; their natural beauty mirrored in the suburban landscapes. They are vulnerable yet guarded by the physical decorations. The tattoos represent both their expression of beauty and act as a shield against commentary on their body. Karin Miller is a truly South African artist, focusing on digital collage and the new media. To generate images of outstanding quality, Miller combines traditional artwork skills and photography with modern technology, creating a fusion of past and present, personal and public. Miller has developed a unique style that exudes a rich eclecticism, playfulness, quirky humour and the post-modern element of neo-baroque. Each facet of the image is carefully chosen and placed to form unexpected combinations and compositions … ‘I spend days looking for a haunting face in an old photograph, or a beautiful pattern in an antique print’. Her tactic is to transform the everyday into something captivating with meticulous attention to detail. She conveys theatrical flamboyance, splashes of parody or just about any mood or setting. Her work often subtly suggests a uniquely South African ambience. Karin Miller has been exclusively signed with the manZArt gallery, based in Franschhoek, South Africa, since the beginning of her fine art career in the early 21st century and has been given numerous solo shows at the Cape Town and Franschhoek spaces as well as special commissions, group shows and interim presentations in other locations, including France and Germany. Her works are in many important national and international collections and have an ever-increasing following throughout the world – a truly South African artist whose longing for beauty in the world often cleverly disguises the intrinsic agenda of each work – an artist who never judges, but instigates – who never instructs, but offers, inspires and allows for a long-lasting connection between art and its viewer. All works are uniquely available through manZArt. www.manZArt.com | info@manZArt.com

DETAIL OF AWAKENING BESIDE WATER

Story Telling by Rob Caskie at Grande Provence

Join famed Storyteller Rob Caskie at Grande Provence on 10 October at 11h30, for an engaging narrative about the Battle of Isandlwana – 22nd January 1879. British defeat or Zulu victory? “The 24th Regiment of Foot had adopted the Sphinx as their Regimental badge after successfully engaging Napoleon along the Nile in 1801. It is almost inconceivable that in January 1879, beneath a mountain looking uncannily like the Sphinx, this famous Regiment would suffer the most ignominious of defeats at the hand of the mighty Zulu Army. Lord Chelmsford split the British force leaving 1800 men in the camp, believing there was no threat. Whilst he was away a Zulu force of 25 000 warriors surrounded the camp, and in under two hours left more than 1 300 British and Colonial soldiers dead.” This unchanged landscape offers the most magnificent canvas onto which to paint this extraordinary story of human struggle and endeavour. In addition, the lessons which emerge for modern day business and living are invaluable. Life happens in the narratives we tell one another. Storytelling may seem like an oldfashioned tool today, and it is. That’s exactly what makes it so powerful. Robs storytelling career began in earnest in 2001, on the famous Anglo-Zulu War battlefields at the foot of world-renowned raconteur, David Rattray. Researching and sharing human dramas has taken him to the Antarctic on numerous occasions, the Arctic, annually to the UK and very regularly to the Battlefields.

2019 Turns More Than Water into Wine for Winemaker Arco Laarman

Four years after first venturing into uncharted waters with his own wine brand Laarman Wines, independent winemaker Arco Laarman still personally collects his grapes from Vermaaklikheid, a small town on the Cape South Coast near Witsand, 300km from Cape Town. His dedication has been well rewarded; under his own label his previous vintages of Cluster and Focal Point collections were met with great acclaim. Always exploring new horizons – Laarmans remarkable journey to a success has seen him test the wine industry waters through an internship at Kaapzicht in the Bottelary Hills alongside the legendary Danie Steytler, worked abroad in Australia, France and the United States and spent two decades at Paarl estate Glen Carlou, where he was instrumental in cementing a reputation as one of South Africa’s leading wine producers.

Chardonnay remains in his blood so moving closer to the true home of Chardonnay on the Cape South Coast

was inevitable. Since 2020,together with his family, the sea-side town of Onrus is now home and Arco gets to cherry-pick grapes from different regions, masterfully crafting it into true expression from that terroir. Another truly inspiring feat is Laarman’s recent recovery from colon cancer. His diagnosis in 2019 meant some quieter times in the cellar, however, now on the mend, he has already made up by producing some outstanding new wines. Two of the highly anticipated new releases form part of the premium range of terroir-driven wines, the Focal Point Chardonnay and the Focal Point Cinsault, both from the 2019 vintage are already high achievers. The Focal Point Cinsault 2019 was recently awarded

a Silver award at the 2021 Old Mutual Trophy Show. Laarman went back to his roots in Paarl for the 2019 harvest of Focal Point Cinsault, a heritage grape variety he views as a South African flag-bearer on the international stage. This supremely elegant Cinsault pairs well with Asian inspired and Moroccan influenced foods. Celebrating triumph despite adversity and with new vintages of different varietals sourced from a variety of vineyards already maturing in bottle, Laarman invites you to raise a glass of 2019 Focal Point Chardonnay or Cinsault to future trips to Vermaaklikheid (directly translated as Entertainment!) and beyond ... www.laarmanwines.com

Two in a Bush Iced Tea Cordials has Launched Making waves in the Winelands, thirst-quenching Two in a Bush Iced Tea Cordial blend of natural fruit concentrates and tea WITH NO ADDED SUGAR OR ARTIFICIAL ADDITIVES is the newest taste sensation!

Born and bred in the Franschhoek valley, Two in a Bush Iced Tea Cordial tells the story of two locals, whose friendship came to fruition in a bottle. Creators Marie-Louise Oosthuizen (MBA holder and the face of Café BonBon for many years) and Hetta van Deventer Terblanche a stalwart in the hospitality industry, are a power house force to be reckoned with. The idea sprouted from a Sodastream gift given to Hetta, four years ago. Since mixing and creating cocktails is one of the many talents of Marie-Louise, the Sodastream machine was put to task! Unimpressed with the lack of ingredients available in the existing market, the duo set out to develop their own cordials, testing recipes on lucky friends and family members. When a friend asked if he could sell their homemade cordial that they gifted him, they knew they were onto something special! The challenge in creating a natural drink, with shelf life and health properties intact was no easy feat but this dynamite team have already released three flavours: Raspberry; Honeybush & Pure Tea, with another two soon to follow. Two in a Bush Iced Tea Cordial is not only proudly South African, it boasts caffeine-free, Rooibos as the main ingredient. Rooibos is packed with scientifically proven health benefits and antioxidants and has been awarded protected designation of origin (PDO) status i.e. only leaves cultivated in SA’s southeast Cederberg region can be sold as ‘Rooibos’. Two in a Bush Iced Tea Cordial, is a versatile drink that can be enjoyed chilled, diluted with water or soda water for a low sugar alternative drink, or used to make a variety of cocktails and mocktails and even a perfect addition to a G&T! Available at the best delis, stores and online. Just in time for the festive season, try the CHRISTMAS CHEER Cocktail: INGREDIENTS: Sparkling Water, to top up pomegranate seeds. Fill a cocktail glass with ice. Add 60ml each of vodka & Two in a Bush Honeybush Cordial to 1/3 Cup fresh squeezed orange juice. Top up with sparkling water, pomegranates and thyme or mint. Enjoy! twoinabush.co.za www.lifebrands.co.za

TRAVEL

The Restaurant at Grande Roche Hotel

Under new management with acclaimed Chef Kevin Grobler and his wife Inemari, The Restaurant at Grande Roche Hotel is already putting the “Grand Old Lady of Paarl” firmly back on the culinary map. The restaurant space has been transformed into a contemporary setting amidst this world-class travel destination. It has been long overdue but now, the five-star, historical monument hotel overlooking vineyards, mountains and manicured gardens can boast a restaurant worthy of its home. Head Chef Kevin Grobler has previously lived and worked in Nice, France for just shy of three years where he was the Head Chef at Michelin Star restaurant JAN. He also worked at restaurants like Delaire Graff, Cavalli and Terroir to name a few. Born and raised in Bloemfontein, his love for food came from too many of his mother’s ‘charcoal tjops’. Realizing that there must be more to cooking, Kevin started to explore the limitless world of food. He has not looked back since! Dishes such as Fire roasted crayfish tails, brûléed grapefruit & vanilla bisque or grilled leeks with braised mustard seeds and textures of onion are featured as starters on the new menu while main courses highlight Kevin’s renowned ginger, beer braised pork belly accompanied by a variety of homemade kimchi and kombuchas that this

chef is passionate about experimenting with. Vegetarians delight in the charred aubergine with whipped feta and toasted almonds. And no man can resist the spiced Basque cheesecake with poached pear or completely evil chocolate mousse with caramel poached nartjie and a few other surprises on the palate. And if you can’t decide what to eat, indulge in the carefully curated tasting menu that features all of the best! The Restaurant at Grande Roche Hotel lends itself to Sundays spent taking a break from the kitchen while Chef Kevin prepares a set menu of platters bursting with sublime starters and main roasts ending off with decadent desserts – each Sunday is different! The restaurant also serves breakfasts while taking in the breath-taking views of Paarl valley from the expansive

terrace, casual lunches and high teas. With a food ethos “to save and preserve” for the future, Chef Kevin’s food style is ever evolving and inspired daily. “Cooking is much more than using the best seasonal ingredients and produce. Cooking is an act of love.” And for the pièce de résistance, end your gastronomic adventure with a night in one of the luxury rooms or suites at the hotel, each individually named with views over landscaped gardens in the midst of this working wine farm with its inimitable style and unsurpassed excellence in service. The legacy of the Grande Roche Hotel is firmly cemented as one of the Winelands most treasured assets. For more information about Grande Roche Hotel and Restaurant, visit www.granderoche.com

Make Your Way to Jordan Wine Estate

Family-owned Jordan Wine Estate, situated in Stellenbosch, South Africa, the heart of the Cape Winelands, has been transformed to become one of the leading estates in South Africa, just 25 minutes from Cape Town International airport, making it an ideal getaway. Featuring a wine tasting centre, luxury accommodation, a casual dining eatery, as well as a world-class restaurant where visitors can relax and enjoy fine Cape wines and local Cape fare surrounded by breath-taking views of the vineyards. Jordan Wine Estate boasts spectacular panoramic views of Table Mountain, False Bay and the Stellenbosch Mountains.

The Indian Ocean lies 14 kilometres to the South with the Atlantic Ocean lying 24 kilometres to the West, allowing the Jordan Family to specialize with classic varieties suited to the various micro-climates. The state-of-theart cellar is designed around a gravity flow system using natural cooling with fermentation and aging taking place in underground cellars.

Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making award-winning wines since 1993 on their now 164 hectare hillside property with a grape growing history going back over 330 years.

Recently, The Bakery at Jordan has been reconceptualised as The Cellar Door. Combining Jordan’s award-winning wines at cellar door prices with fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced by chef Thys Esterhuysen, to create a simple and casual dining experience under the trees of the estate, overlooking the valley.

Unique by nature’s design, the Jordan slopes face North (where Cabernet Sauvignon excels), South (where Sauvignon Blanc competes with the best in the world), East (where Chardonnay produces Burgundian-like white wines) and West (where the Syrah vineyards enjoy the afternoon sun and gravelly soils). The ancient soils have evolved from 600 million year old Cape granite and range from deep, well-drained clay-loam to gravelly and sandy soils situated on clay.

Exciting wine tasting experiences can be enjoyed with the casual all-day menu seven days a week. Visitors can choose from a selection of dishes of the day, flammkuchen, and platters to share. Picnics can be pre-booked and enjoyed in one of picnic

pods on the lawns or alongside the dam, giving you the opportunity to sit back and relax to the sounds of nature. Picnics are run throughout the year with the menu changing with the seasons. The Luxury Suites at Jordan were opened in 2015, with 13 beautifully appointed suites giving you the opportunity to choose the ideal suite that suites you. The suites are tucked away, yet close to the winery, restaurant and The Cellar Door, with beautiful panoramic views of the vineyards and Stellenbosch Mountains. The 164 hectare estate is the perfect place to learn and discover the art of wine. A variety of tours are on offer, from vineyard tours to cellar tours. And if you feel adventurous, take to the single track and explore the Bottelary Conservancy Mountain Bike route, which has a start and end point at Jordan.
