Wine Tram Raised R120 000 for Charities Each year Franschhoek Wine Tram hands over a cheque to six local charities making a difference in the Franschhoek community. “Our community has played a big role in the success of the Franschhoek Wine Tram, so giving back to the community by supporting these local charities is an absolute pleasure”, says David Blyth, owner of the Franschhoek Wine Tram. This year, the six charities that received a donation of R20 000 each were: Franschhoek Hospice (providing palliative care and support to people with terminal and life-limiting conditions in the Franschhoek Valley), The Kusasa Project (providing The annual Franschhoek Wine Tram Charity Handover. Fire Destroys Classrooms Four classrooms at Groendal Secondary School were destroyed in a fire on Monday, 27 January. According to Western Cape Education Department (WCED) officials the blaze started at the school’s design and engineering classrooms. The fire, that started around 13h50, fortunately didn’t pose a danger to staff and pupils as they were in Stellenbosch participating in a sport day. Classes are continuing without disruption, as the school fortunately has other facilities – such as the school hall – that can be used for teaching. The WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but arson is not suspected. An engineer visited the school on 10 January to investigate the safety of the classrooms adjacent to the destroyed ones. The classrooms have not been used since the fire. Text & Image: Editorial Desk

Franschhoek to Have Its Own Ambulance Medicare EMR – the Franschhoek-based medical response, training and events company – celebrated its thirteenth anniversary late last year. Along with the birthday celebration came the news that they’re expanding their footprint beyond the valley. The Tatler caught up with owner Garth and Monika van Zyl to find out more about their plans. Over steaming Americanos at The Hoek, Garth and Monica share how Medicare EMR has grown over the years from a subscriber-based medical response company only to include aspects such as first aid, OHS and fire training to event safety & security, thus offering a one-stop-shop for the events industry. “Our focus has always been on our members and our community – wherever there’s an emergency we go,” says Garth. “Up to 90% of callouts we attend to we don’t get remunerated for.” “Unfortunately, anticompetitive behaviour in the submission of claims to medical aids has resulted in a lot of the ambulances services practising financial medicine forcing their staff to administer unnecessary treatment in order to get paid for the callout. We don’t do this. We administer the treatment that is medically necessary and not the treatment that is necessary to get paid. So, over the years, we’ve subsidised the bulk of emergency treatment in the valley!” With the adoption of the new Western Cape Ambulance Act, Medicare EMR saw an opportunity
Within a few months, Franschhoek will have its own ambulance
to not only expand their service offering but also their geographic footprint. “We’ve applied to the Department of Health to establish five operational bases in the Cape Winelands,” states Garth. The Medicare EMR main base will be moving to Klapmuts for its central location; in addition there will be operating bases in Franschhoek, Worcester, Swellendam and Ceres. Each base will be individually set up to service the community. Some bases will have a response vehicle and an ambulance other just an ambulance. “We’ve cut our teeth on country towns”, laughs Monika, “and we look forward to bringing our new and existing services to places that have been under-serviced in the past.” The new ambulances will be on the road as soon as the Health Department signs the final paperwork – probably around August. www.medicare-emr.co.za | 074 363 7744 Text: Editorial Desk | Image: Supplied
Bridge House Mile The 2020 Bridge House Mile took place on Saturday, 1 February. With over 900 swimmers taking to the water of the York Dam on Boschendal Estate it was the Mile with the largest number of participants to date. As with most good things, the event is built on a sold partnership between the school, the title sponsor – Old Mutual Wealth, event organiser Michelle Harley of Tricky T, brand ambassador Amy Kleynhans, the participants and all the various supporters. The event aligns perfectly with Bridge House School’s philosophy of nurturing health and vitality and is making its mark on the national open water swimming calendar. Well done to all involved.

Hospitality Academy Graduation 11 February 2020 was not only the day that Nelson Mandela was released three decades ago, but it also marked a special day for the students of the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy. Students, parents, teachers, ambassadors, friends and classmates all gathered at the Franschhoek Cellar to celebrate the graduation of 13 students from the Class of 2019. Ambassador and role model, Reuben Riffel, inspired the students with his words of encouragement and Academy Head Jeremy Davids left the crowd emotional after his personal descriptions of each student which he shared with everyone before they collected their certificates. From Franschhoek with Love With the threat of Day Zero increasingly forgotten in the Winelands one has to actively remind oneself that large parts of the country are still in the grip of a crippling drought. While you may be inclined to shrug your shoulders thinking that there is nothing that an individual can do to assist drought-stricken communities you would be wrong. Keep reading to find out how you can make a real difference to a community in desperate need. Fraserburg is situated in the Karoo highlands of the Northern Cape Province. In parts of the area there hasn’t been significant rain for nine years. The normally hardy Karoo plants are shrivelled and black and what’s left of sheep stocks have to be fed as there’s simply no grazing left and most boreholes have run dry. When the school year started in January many farming families couldn’t pay their children’s school and hostel fees. (Because of the size and remoteness of many farms most farm children board in the town during the week.) The old-age home is struggling to stay open and businesses are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. This community is economically and psychologically on their knees – they really are living on faith. Here’s how you can help. The Western Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church entrusted the community of Fraserburg to the Franschhoek congregation with the request to do whatever it can to ease their burden. One of the church’s projects is “Feeding a sheep”: It costs R50 per month to feed a sheep. Some farmers have been feeding their livestock for almost a decade! This is a critical initiative to enable farmers to keep small herds alive so they have something from which to rebuild their flocks when the rains do eventually come. Thus far the DRC congregation has fed 1535 sheep for 3 months. It’s welcome, but it’s a drop in the bucket... If you want to do something for a lady, make up a care package. There is hardly any money for basics, let alone for little luxuries. Spoil a lucky lady with a package containing little things like perfumed soap, a washcloth and toiletries. Alternatively, get back to basics by donating clothing and non-perishable food for distribution among those in need. You are also welcome to simply make a general donation to the Dutch Reformed Church with the instruction that it be used to assist the Fraserburg community. The congregation’s bank details are as follows: Account Name: NG Gemeente Franschhoek Bank: Nedbank Franschhoek Branch Code: 167 005 Current Account Number: 167 000 8754

Did you have any New Year’s resolutions? I had only two. Be resolute, and never trust a doctor who doesn’t water his pot plants. So we’ve welcomed in a new decade, let alone a new year. 2020 is well upon us, still relatively unspoiled with potential turmoil and natural disasters. They have yet to come. While the slate is clean and we are yet to be bombarded with dramatically gripping news, let us take a breath and look at what is new on our wine horizons. Henk Swart of La Couronne has excelled himself again with yet more awards. His new Jacques Mouton range is outstanding. The Chardonnay (Madeleine) received 93/100 from Tim Atkins and the Special Reserve (Antoinette), a Merlot/Shiraz blend, is also well worth looking out for. By the time you read this his 2017 Shiraz, which makes up the trio in the range, will also be available. I tasted this wine over a year ago while still in barrel and was immediately impressed by its then maturity and balance. This was confirmed by a more recent tasting. Dieu Donné has introduced two new ranges: their Botanical and The Cross Collection. Botanical wines, Rush, Blush and Brush, are essentially entry level wines for summer pool parties and the like. Rush is a blend of Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with crisp overtones. Blush is named after the Blushing Bride flower of the Protea family and is made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Brush is a Cabernet Sauvignon/ Shiraz/Merlot blend and is a well-made summer red. The Cross Collection lies at the other end of the scale. Their 2015 Shiraz/Viognier blend benefits from 22 months in new American oak and, even with a dash of Viognier, has a full bodied appeal. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, with similar time in new French oak, is endorsed with a Tim Atkins score of 90/100 which is quite justified. Great winter wines. In an earlier life I used to live not far (180km) from the Victoria Falls. I cannot recall how many times I drove past them and over the bridge to Southern Rhodesia before actually stopping to have a look. A similar feeling applies to Freedom Hill. Is it in Franschhoek or Paarl? Freedom Hill is somehow positioned at the limit of our local ‘radar’
so why stop? Here’s why. Ashley Clayton, Sales and Marketing Manager, is re-inventing this property next to Drakensstein Correctional Services. We often see tourist busses at the Nelson Mandela statue, so, by expanding on a theme Ashley is aiming at attracting those who not only stop for an iconic photograph or the Mandela House visit. Why not continue down the road to Freedom Hill for lunch and a glass of wine, or at least to savour their platters and snacks. Their award winning wines are well priced too. Also in the pipeline are two limited wines from La Galaniere – a refreshing Rosé and a Cabernet Sauvignon both 2017 vintage. These are easy drinking and what I would call ‘country wines’ as they remind me of the French and their no nonsense attitude to wines from ‘the country’ by country folk for country folk. Excellent table wines that I would not refer to as ‘Vin Ordinaire’. The following wisdom comes from the book “Wines of the Cape” published by KWV in 1959 (61 years ago ). “Prominent districts for natural table wines are: Paarl, Stellenbosch, French Hoek, Groot Drakenstein, Klapmuts, Tulbagh and Constantia.” “Cape wines, distinctive in their virtues, should never be compared with wines from France, Germany or other European lands.” “Unfortunately, much that is miscalled Sherry on the general market is nothing more than sweet wine braced with brandy.” “If a cork is too large to cork a bottle, do not attempt to trim with a knife; place in boiling water for a few minutes and it will fit easily.” “To remove ring stains left on polished wood by bottles and glasses, rub well with a damp cloth dipped in cigarette ash. Then polish.” So now we know!

Buy Wine and Give Back Franschhoek Wine Tram and ACVV Franschhoek have created an ideal opportunity to give back to the local community. Before setting off for the day, Wine Tram visitors are able to purchase a wine tote bag, which includes a wine purchase discount card for use when buying wine at various participating wine estates along the Wine Tram routes. The Wine Tote Bags, manufactured by the ACVV Franschhoek from recycled coffee bean bags donated by Terbodore Coffee Roasters, cost just R20, and are available at the new Franschhoek Terminal, where all Wine Tram lines depart. All proceeds go to the ACVV, the oldest non-profit organisation in the social services field, providing comprehensive social work and child protection services for children and the elderly. This initiative helps the ACVV make a difference to the community of Franschhoek, and Wine Tram travellers receive discounts on wine purchases. It’s a real win for all! Juicy Story The Tatler heard there was a juice bar in Franschhoek, a new one, in fact, the only one. We went to investigate and found Franklin & Co in Bijoux Square in Huguenot Street. It turns out that it is a juice bar and eatery with a slogan that says, “Juice for the soul”. Owners Marc du Preez and his partner François Hanekom had spent years as a private chef and butler to a family that lives in Franschhoek during the summer. Their jobs took them all over the world giving them the opportunity to experience sailing and international life – and pick up wide food knowledge. When the time came to come home they returned to Franschhoek with a dream to fulfil: their own eatery with a focus on healthy food. Research led them to their current location; learnt and memory-filed know-how helped them draw up a menu. First, they had to have a name though. They considered variations of François’ name and settled on ‘Franklin’ and added ‘Co’. Then they used Marc’s face for their logo, adapting it until it was a recognisable monkey. Go figure! The healthy menu has options for breakfast, light
lunches, salads and sandwiches. Vegan options include a breakfast bowl of quinoa, scrambled tofu, greens and monkey seeds; a salad of roasted chickpeas, corn, cherry tomatoes, avocado, coconut biltong and cashew dressing and some other items with peppers and sprouts. There are more traditional items that include eggs, chicken, beef and trout. Then there is the juice which is cold-pressed. The process is slightly longer than liquefying but the benefit is the increase in nutrition and the bone-dry pulp that goes towards composting. Franklin & Co is open every daily from 07h00 to 17h00 and on Wednesday and Friday evenings it stays open for cocktails and tapas. Having a liquor licence means they can serve a Pink Tini or Kir Royale with tapas and one or two wines during

New Magnetic Brain Procedure To Treat Depression Advances in brain science set to “revolutionise” treatment of psychiatric conditions A new non-invasive procedure, which uses a magnetic charge to stimulate targeted areas of the brain to treat conditions such as depression and anxiety, was recently introduced for the first time on the African continent at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. The first few patients have undergone the procedure, known in medical terms as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), for the treatment of major depression, anxiety, neurological injury and tinnitus. This was done at the new treatment centre, called Connectomix, which has been established at the hospital by neurosurgeon, Dr Christos Profyris. The areas of the brain that are targeted for TMS treatment are determined by means of advanced brain mapping. Both the brain mapping and the TMS procedure are non-invasive, as neither of these involve surgery of any kind. “By using functional magnetic resonance
imaging [fMRI] technology with especially developed and highly advanced software, we are now able to observe brain activity in real time and develop a sophisticated computer generated brain function map for each individual. The brain function map enables us to understand the individual’s brain physiology better and we can therefore more precisely target the TMS treatment for each particular person,” Dr Profyris explains. “TMS is then used to stimulate specifically targeted areas of the brain by means of an electric current which is passed through a magnetic coil to create a high-intensity magnetic field. Outstanding results have been achieved in relieving the symptoms of depression and anxiety in selected patients,” says Dr Profyris, who has extensively researched and trained in brain mapping and the TMS procedure in Australia. “When I first commenced studying brain
SINCE 1994
mapping with TMS in Australia last year, I was at first sceptical that it could provide a meaningful therapy to people with neurological injury, severe depression or other psychiatric conditions. While TMS is not effective in treating everyone with these conditions, we are however seeing it positively impacting the lives of many individuals. “Brain mapping with TMS is becoming a meaningful treatment option, particularly TMS uses a magnetic charge to stimulate targeted areas of the brain for individuals whose depression has not responded to the traditional furthermore showing immense promise for treatments available and are consequently the treatment of certain brain injuries and experiencing treatment-resistant depression.” other psychiatric conditions such as addiction, Dr Profyris says brain mapping with TMS is fibromyalgia and Alzheimer’s disease. The TMS procedure is done with a special TMS coil that is positioned on the patient’s head over a mapped area to either excite or inhibit selected areas of the brain underneath the coil. It is undertaken on an outpatient basis and usually involves several repeat sessions per day over a three-day period. Side effects are generally mild and may include a headache, facial twitches and/or light-headedness, all of which usually improve shortly after every session. Dr Profyris completed a Fellowship in Australia, where he studied brain mapping as part of a brain tumour fellowship focused on keyhole brain surgery. There he developed a deep interest in brain mapping and recognised the possibilities of using TMS as a therapy for neurological and psychiatric conditions such as depression. He returned to South Africa in 2019, and is practising as a neurosurgeon at Netcare Milpark and Netcare Linksfield hospitals. He has established the Connectomix treatment centre in association with Netcare and Netcare Milpark @ 48 VILLAGE ARTISAN Hospital.

Gardening in March NATIE FERREIRA
March always brings the year’s first “where-hasthe-year-gone” feeling for me. It is difficult to believe that autumn 2020 is just around the corner. By the time you read this most of the grape and summer fruit crop will be harvested and farmers will be hard at work preparing for harvest 2021! The same routine applies to the home gardener. Like the farmer, the gardener will keep an eye on the weather at this time of the year and plan his activities around that. We have had a hot and dry summer. February lived up to her reputation as the hottest month of the year. Despite this, a massive combined effort from the public and authorities have led to some of the best storage dam levels in years. We must not let this fool us into a false sense of security. The Western Cape will always be a dry place in summer, and we can never stop searching for new ways to conserve water.
March is a big feeding month. You want to get around half of your yearly fertiliser requirements onto vines and summer fruit trees now. Keep an eye on the weather report and wait for a cool and rainy day to apply a few spadesful of kraal manure and a cup of fertiliser around every tree. Look for a balanced fertiliser like 2:3:2 and always go for the organic options, especially in the food garden. Your lawn will love some fertiliser. It is especially important to look at higher phosphorous feeding to ensure proper root development during winter. Camelias and Azaleas can do with some high potash feeding to ensure that they hang on to their flowers in spring. Get a load of manure delivered and apply to all beds. As soon as we have had the first proper rain this can be covered by a thick layer of your preferred mulch. Prune summer flowering shrubs and deadhead regularly. All summer flowering perennials can be lifted and divided now. This is a great way to increase your planting area and share with friends. You can also take cuttings of most evergreen shrubs and trees. Start to plant your winter bulbs – the Western Cape has a wealth of indigenous bulbous plants. Explore some new varieties to experiment
with this year. March usually brings with it the best rose flush of the season. If you had access to water this should be a good rose year. Deadhead regularly and carry on feeding the bushes with a balanced fertiliser. You will also need to keep an eye on possible red spider mite infestations as well as spray preventatively against black spot and mildew. Top up the mulch around the bushes; you can also apply some wellmatured manure or compost. Note which roses perform best and mark the ones you want to move later. I sure don’t trust my own memory. Autumn is harvest time and that should keep you busy enough. Most gardeners I know have a glut of tomatoes, eggplant, green peppers and green beans at the moment. Share, preserve and eat as much as you can. But do not leave them hanging on the bushes for too long. Rotting fruit lying around the garden is a sure recipe for insect infestations that will only be apparent next season. If you have some chickens roaming the garden it is always good to allow them into the garden post-harvest. They love all the fruit fly larvae, aphids, caterpillars and will even clean up most of the fallen fruit. I have re-ignited my love for pickles and will be

The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses – Hanna Rjon Sensory gardens have been the talk of the town for a while. Great smelling flowers are not only appealing to look at but can also elevate your mood on a stressful day. Indoor and patio scented gardens can be great Zen corners while transforming your house into a home. Here’s a list of flowers which can bring your garden and senses to life! Smell the roses (rosa): Roses are the most popular scented flower choice. They come in many different colours. Plant a few to add that “pop” in your garden along with some “rosey” scents. Roses love the sun, but make sure to keep them hydrated! Growing Gardenias: It’s time to garden those Gardenias! Gardenias are also known as ‘Cape Jasmines’ and have one of the most alluring flower scents. The Gardenia is usually grown outside; however, they can make the perfect potted plant. Gardenias prefer lots of sunlight and they will elevate your patio to a serendipitous escape. Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus): Sweet Peas are
one of the sweetest smelling flowers in the floral queendom. Their smell goes perfectly with an hour with your journal or a good cup of tea. Sweet peas require a lot of sun and need dowel rods to grow. The best position will be a spot that receives sunlight all day long on a patio or an indoor window with an abundance of sunlight during the day. Sweet Peas are also perfect for balconies. Balcony railings can be the ideal replacement for dowel rods. Jasminum polyanthum (Chinese Jasmine): Jasmine produces the sweetest, delicate and soothing scent which has been used in perfumes for years. The flower’s buds are often harvested and used in teabags. This princess loves to stay in the shade and prefers to be watered once a week. Lavender Love (Lavandula): We all associate lavender positively. We use it for aesthetic purposes or to treat and/or relieve specific problems and issues. Lavender will make a great addition to your

scented garden as long as they receive enough sunlight and their branches are pruned. Pretty Petunias: Petunia’s are another top favourite of Life is a Garden. Did you know Petunias know when to smell good? They usually release a burst of sweet smells in the morning or evening. Imagine walking out onto your patio with a fresh cup of coffee to be greeted by these little beauties! Petunias can be the perfect indoor spring flower. These flowers need at least six hours of direct sunlight. Like Sweet Peas, they need a spot with a lot of sunlight to thrive fruitfully.

Corolla’s Conquest How Toyota made its hatchback number 1 again To be blunt, Toyota lagged well behind in its passenger car engine tech as South Africa’s biggest carmaker kept churning out naturally-aspirated old school lumps that could never hold a candle to its European rivals’ more recent force-fed downsized engines and space-age gearboxes. Not only did they deliver far better performance, but those Continental cars benefited significantly from superior economy and drivability too. Add 1500m of Jozi altitude and that ancient N/A disadvantage was even greater, so considering that’s where 70% of Saffers live, it was a major issue as Toyota simply failed to compete with a growing list of far more sophisticated, higher tech hatchback rivals. Well, in engine and gearbox tech anyway. Perhaps it was that the Orient was less concerned about ‘global warming’ than say Europe or California was, but the result of that lack of efficient turbo performance certainly had Toyota on the back foot. Right back on top of the pile Happily, that’s all history since this Corolla Hatch arrived in SA about a year ago, to kick those old
performance and efficiency shortfalls squarely into touch. But that’s not all — this latest Corolla also delivers excellent ride quality, crisp handling and even more space in a safer cabin to propel the world’s bestselling car right back to the top of the hatchback pile. The resurgence is however thanks in main due to Corolla’s huge new under-the-bonnet advantage. Powered by Toyota’s contemporary 85kW 1.2-litre four-pot turbo petrol it shares with the C-HR, the little engine delivers 185Nm all the way from 1500 to 4000rpm and drives the front wheels through a solid and slick-shifting 6-speed manual. But that’s just half the story — Corolla Hatch gets a smooth and responsive 10-step Sport Sequential Shiftmatic to also tackle Europe’s slickest rivals with what I’d go as far as to say is the best continuously variable transmission we’ve yet driven. It doesn’t feel like a CVT, nor does it cause the engine to drone like a suffering drunk like most CVTs do, all of which is most impressive. We’ve enjoyed ample time road testing both versions of the Corolla, where the manual rushed to 100km/h in a fleet 8.9 seconds, crushed 400m in 16.1 seconds at 139km/h and pulled from 80 to 120km/h in 6.39 seconds. The CVT took a few tenths of a second longer to do the same and Toyota claims a 200km/h top end and 6.1 litres per 100km for both variants. Best of all, this turbo Corolla Hatch no longer suffers that draconian thin air performance penalty that normally aspirated cars do at over altitude. Better than Golf?
Now our tests not only proved quicker than Toyota’s own claims, but they also made for an intriguing comparison with arch rival Volkswagen’s 81kW Golf 1.0 TSI. Golf was once the quicker option by far compared to the Corolla Hatch’s 1600cc N/A Auris predecessor. This time around the Golf proved a bit slower than the latest Corolla Hatch and cost a tad more, even if it is slightly more economical. But the VW is now also by far the older tech car — the wheel turns, they say. There’s far more to Corolla Hatch than just a quantum step forward in under-the-bonnet technology and this first middle-of-the-range fivedoor Toyota to carry the best seller Corolla tag since the Tazz over twenty years ago is also more than just a re-badged Auris. Corolla Hatch offers excellent ride quality and handling dynamics thanks to its much stiffer and lighter TNGA platform, complete with a multilink rear suspension with an advanced shock absorber design for a smoother and more comfortable ride in a compact design that also allows for more cabin and load space. Corolla Hatch looks the part and its stylish, spacious, modern and cohesive cabin packs another giant leap forward in materials and finish to deliver a practical and eye-catching mix of new textures, colours and trim gains. A slim instrument panel dominates a sporty wraparound cockpit, while the driver adopts a sportier position in a bucket seat that keeps you nicely in place when the going gets brisk.
Corolla Hatch has a superb quality cabin of course crammed full of active and passive safety features along with a raft of really cool high tech infotainment touches to shove the world’s favourite car right back to the top of the hatchback pile in every respect. It has a multifunction steering wheel assisted infotainment packed with 6-speaker audio, Bluetooth and USB and auxiliary input, with Android Auto and Apple Car Play smartphone mirroring set to join the fray across the entire Toyota range very soon too. Great specification Add a multi-information display, power steering, power windows, cruise control, climate control, a reversing camera and a power socket, while the Corolla Hatch features a host of safety kit too. Those include a full complement of seven airbags for the driver and passenger, along with two side and curtain, as well as driver’s knee bag, plus Vehicle Stability Control and a full suite of electronic driver aids from ABS and EBD to Brake Assist and Hillassist Control and it also comes standard with ISOFIX attachment points for child seats. All Corolla Hatch models come standard with the regular comprehensive Toyota back-up from a 6-service/90 000km Plan with intervals set at 12 months/15 000km, and 3-year/100 000km warranty. So, this Toyota’s Corolla has completely turned the middle of the road Hatch market right on its head as it rewrites the rulebook to properly salute its best-selling car in history reputation.

TYRRELL TIME

UK classic car celebrity Iain Tyrrell recently paid another visit to FMM while on holiday with his fiancée, Melanie. Last year Iain started his own YouTube channel ‘Tyrrell’s Classic Workshop’, in which he performs workshop tasks on special-interest cars. The channel had an immediate response from all over the world and has continued to grow ever since. As the museum’s Aston Martin DB4 GT’s motor was not running cleanly at the time of Iain’s visit, the car was brought out for him to do a tuneup and a full video shoot was carried out for an

On Sunday, 2 February 2020, Groot Drakenstein Games Club, just outside Franschhoek, held their annual ‘John Faure’ Six-A-Side tournament. The weather was glorious and the eight participating teams and spectators were treated to an array of local food and craft beer on tap while watching the cricket in one of South Africa’s most picturesque settings. Groot Drak boasts the country’s oldest turf wicket, which played true, allowing the batsmen to score plenty of runs, with some enormous sixes being deposited to all corners of the historic ground. Celebrity players, Darren ‘Whackhead’ Simpson, Johann Louw, Frikkie Welsh, Ryan Bailey, Luther Bakkes and others treated the crowd by showing off their skills with both bat and ball. 10 Steps To Take Advantage of the Property Buyer’s Market For the first time in years, the property market is all about buyers. It is an excellent time to buy with plenty of stock, a reduced interest rate and record-high home loan approvals, says Samuel Seeff, chairman of the Seeff Property Group. Whether experienced or a novice, the buying process has become far more complex than ever before. It can be daunting, but not if you follow these ten easy steps, says Seeff. Step 1 – Know how much you can buy for. You’ll need a good credit record and stable income. It’s best to do this before you start your house hunting. Your bank or a mortgage originator can assist. Generally, your monthly bond repayment should not exceed one third of your income. If you’re married or in a partnership, you can combine your incomes to assist with affordability. Step 2 – Be ready for a deposit down payment. Although first-time buyers can qualify for home loans of up to 105%, you may need a cash deposit of 10% to 15% as security. It is always advisable to invest a deposit if you can as it brings down your monthly payments and creates an equity buffer. Step 3 – Cash needed for costs. You will need to pay transfer duty to SARS on all purchases above R900 000 plus conveyancing and bond registration costs for the transfer process. While there is no transfer duty, a R900 000 purchase would still require costs of around R52 500. Don’t forget to also budget for moving costs to get you settled in your new home. Step 4 – Prep the paperwork. An extensive set of paperwork is required including certified copies of your identity document/s, marriage certificate and Ante Nuptial Contract (if applicable) plus the last three month’s payslips and 3-6 month’s current bank statements, stamped by the bank. Step 5 – Where do you want to live? Consider the type of property you need such as a flat versus a house and then the potential areas where you could buy. Check for price ranges in the area, access to amenities, traffic and transport availability and crime stats. An active community and Neighbourhood Watch are plus factors for a neighbourhood. Step 6 – Online house hunting is a breeze. There is a host of places to look, from property portals to agency websites and property supplements. Digital technology means you can view a series of
photographs and often a virtual tour before setting up viewings. Communicating with agents is also so easy these days via cell phone or messaging. Step 7 – Put your best offer forward. First, do a thorough inspection of the property for structural faults and obvious poor maintenance issues. Once satisfied, put your best offer forward. The agent will advise whether your price is in the acceptable range and be prepared to present a counter-offer should the seller reject it. Step 8 – Offer accepted, time to get a bond. An Offer to Purchase is a legally binding contract and once accepted, you need to fulfil the conditions such as securing a home loan. The agent will assist with the loan application (with the help of a mortgage originator) or you can attend to that yourself. You will now need your first set of documents (ID, marriage documents and 3-6 months bank statements). Once the bond is approved, the transaction can move forward. Step 9 – Transfer of ownership. The seller appoints the conveyancing attorney and the bank the bond registration attorney. You will need a full set of documents (ID, marriage etc.) along with the deposit (if applicable) and transaction costs which must be paid to the conveyancing attorney. The Conveyancer will prepare all the documents and make the necessary payments to obtain the rates and service clearance certificates (e.g. electricity, plumbing/water etc.). The Conveyancer will then lodge the documents in the local Deeds Office where they will be inspected and if approved, the transfer will be registered. Step 10 – Transfer is registered, you can finally move in! It can take up to three months for registration of the transfer into the buyer’s name. The conveyancer will advise once the transfer is registered. If you are a cash buyer, the title deed will be sent to you, alternatively, to the bank if you have a mortgage loan. Once the transfer is registered your bond repayments will commence. Occupation is also usually upon registration of transfer.

Are You Claiming Tax Deductions for Solar? Section 12B of the Income Tax Act provides for a 50/30/20 income tax deduction in respect of plant and machinery owned by the taxpayer and which is brought into use for the first time by the taxpayer for the purpose of their trade. Section 12B specifically provides for a deduction of plant and machinery introduced by a taxpayer to generate electricity i.e. photovoltaic (PV) solar energy and the deduction rules are as follows: PV solar systems generating less than 1 megawatt of electricity – write off 100% of the cost in full in the year it is brought into use. PV solar systems generating more than 1 megawatt of electricity – write off 50% of the cost in year 1, 30% in year 2 and 20% in year 3. The accelerated depreciation allowance for solar
PV systems applies whether they are installed for the business by contractors or developers, or paid for by the business in a credit sale agreement (as defined in Section 1 of the Value-Added Tax Act) – either upfront in a single payment or in multiple payments over an extended period. The cost of the solar PV system allowed for accelerated depreciation includes its full direct capital cost, including design and engineering, project planning, delivery, foundations and supporting structures, solar PV panels, AC inverters, DC combiner boxes, racking, cables and wiring, and installation. Finance costs are excluded. Most PV solar systems installed to date generate less than 1 MW and such taxpayers will be able to claim 100% of their expenses in the year the solar system is installed. This capital allowance was confirmed in a binding private ruling by SARS dated 11 October 2018 (BPR 311) in respect of an application by a private company in South Africa to clarify the deductibility of the capital expenditure incurred to install solar PV systems at a number of sites owned and leased by the applicant. The systems were being installed to reduce the company’s electricity costs.

Business Leadership TONY FROST
Positive Change Needs a Collective Innovative Attitude Every revolutionary idea started with just the spark of an idea. But the spark did not just pop out of the ether, from nowhere. It started with an openness of mind, a discomfort of the soul, an unrelenting energy to change something. In short, it started with an attitude! That is what we need in our country, our world, today: Attitude! Having an attitude of positive change is not about having people constantly spouting off on the first thing that comes to mind. There is a well-known highprofile president of a big country that does this all the time – often with tragic consequences! There is a close correlation between real strong leadership and the creation and maintenance of an attitude of innovation. Real leaders are constantly on the lookout for ways of improving the world for all; ways of creating and maintaining peace and stability for all. This is the best hope the world has of reducing poverty, dealing with climate change and ensuring sustainable growth. Great leaders know that they do not own the sole prerogative to innovation and are simply incapable and unable to do this on their own. They know they cannot mandate innovation, nor dictatorially command it. Great leaders are abundantly clear that world-class innovation derives from world-class teamwork. In a world-class team, every member knows that her or his opinions and contributions count, no matter how bizarre they may seem to be when first uttered. Most of us are aware that the world is changing at a dizzying pace; that there are complexities at play that are so filled with nuances that it is impossible for a single person to find ways to deal with them. We also know that one person can dream up an idea which changes the trajectory of the world – the wheel, the internet, Amazon, Google, Facebook, Uber, Airbnb – just to name a few. We all need new ways of adapting to this increasingly changing environment in which we find ourselves. True meaningful innovation needs to have at its core the objective of producing a positive impact on society. Innovation is essential in all parts of society; in business, in politics, in art, in sport, throughout society.
It is essential because humanity has reached a tipping point. The signs are all around us. Democracy seems unable to produce the kind of innovation necessary to solve 21st-century problems. Look at Brexit, the Middle East, China-America. Capitalism is under threat and needs to change, but change to what? The rise of the populist strongmen will almost certainly quell the innovation required for us to find our way through the bogs and complexity of 21st-century life. For any individual to suggest that he and he alone will produce the solutions is just one big impossible lie, no matter how seductive it may sound. Some organisations have established Innovation Departments or appointed some poor soul as Head of Innovation. This approach is doomed to fail. Just as appointing individuals to head up compliance, or transformation, are decisions equally fraught with failure. These are all issues that should be owned and lived by all and should be in the DNA of the organisation. It is impossible to know from whence the next great idea is going to bubble up! Great ideas come from moments of individual inspiration, but they are most likely to happen in an environment where people are encouraged to think and act innovatively and without fear of ridicule. What is at least as germane is the fact that while one person might be the wellspring of the idea, it will take teamwork to implement it! Think of the teamwork required to put Neil Armstrong on the moon 51 years ago; or the teamwork needed to build an aircraft; or the teamwork required to win the Rugby World Cup. We often just focus on the team we can see on the field of play. But the extended team goes way beyond that. In the case of rugby it includes us, the fans (imagine them playing in an empty stadium and no TV!), the manufacturers of all the equipment, the groundsmen that prepared the playing surface, healthcare professionals, sponsors, media, government and, obviously also the team management and coaching staff. So, too, is it critical with innovation, real lifechanging innovation, to recognise the importance of the team. Indeed without the team, it remains only a stillborn idea. It is the team that gives the idea life. Just as giving life to a new-born baby is a team effort. Therefore it must be evident that critical to the upwelling of great ideas is the criticality of a collective attitude which predicates all of us to be innovative and to welcome innovation as the road to a new and sustainable future which is good for all. Indeed it is about inspiring, people-oriented and future focussed leadership. tony@siroccostrategy.com
New Era for Sofa Studio 2020 marks the start of a new era for The Sofa Studio. Since founder Mark Bain’s passing in 2018, Stuart Douglas has been steering the ship from his Douglas Built workshops on Montagne Farm. Now he is handing over the reins to staff members Peter Juries and Pam Makwabasa. Peter started with Mark at the Sofa Studio in 2007 straight from school and Pam joined the team in 2015. Personally trained by Mark, Peter soon became Mark’s right-hand man. Many readers may recall seeing Peter making frames and upholstering side-by-side with Mark in the previous Sofa Studio workshop in the village. Mark’s wife, Mary-Anne is also helping out. Together with Stuart, she is mentoring Peter and Pam offering her administrative and marketing skills. “It’s a privilege for me to help Peter and Pam to realise their dream of continuing Mark’s legacy and having their own business”, says Mary-Anne. “I know Mark would be very proud”.

with Jonathan Peach, manager and coowner of Build it Franschhoek How many staff members do you have and how long have they worked at Build It? We have 14 staff with Rosy and Lizette both having worked for the hardware store for 23 years. We have been here for 16 years of which 15 have been as Build it. Is Build It a franchise and do you have to answer to HQ? How much independence do you have? Build It is not a franchise rather a voluntary buying group under the Spar umbrella. This gives us a lot more independence. It is noticeable that outside suppliers deliver
to Franschhoek. Can you not supply all building requirements? There are times when other suppliers do come into Franschhoek, due to the builders being based in other towns. That being said, we can supply any and all building material. How did your involvement in soccer come about and which are your teams? The Build It group encourages under-13 soccer tournaments. So we approach all the schools and clubs in the valley to participate in our tournament. How big was the project initially and how big is it now? It started with one or two teams in Natal and has grown nation-wide with the growth of Build It to over 300 tournaments. What are the responsibilities of the sponsor and is there support from government side? We as Build It are the sponsors and we get no aid from the government. Which schools are involved? All the schools in the valley starting from Pniel and Bridge House to Groendal and the other schools. What is your involvement with the team going to the Gothia Cup? We are a small sponsor for the Gothia Cup team. What inspired you to start Peaches and Scream

CHARLOTTE VAN ZYL
Lab Girl By Hope Jahren. Publ: Fleet. 369 pages. “Lab Girl” is an autobiography as well as a love story. Hope Jahren is a distinguished, awardwinning scientist and academic. She received three Fulbright Scholarships and is one of only four scientists (and the only woman) to ever have been awarded Young Investigator Medals within the Earth Sciences in the United States. The first half of this book is dedicated to her journey from being a lowly lab girl when she began her medical studies, to becoming a world-renowned scientist. Luckily for all of us, after qualifying as a doctor, she changed direction and found her true vocation, that of
a botanist. The other half of the book is where the love story takes place. It is the history of her life-long passion and love for the vegetable kingdom. For everything that is green and lives below the surface of the earth. Or surges upwards with all the vitality and fecundity of the plant world. From the smallest of herbs to the biggest of the forest giants, she understands them and she admires them. “Lab Girl” resembles Elizabeth Gilbert’s story of the life of Alma Whittaker in “The Signature of All Things,” except that this is a true story. Both the fictional the real scientist share an avid sense of wonder at the variety and abundance of the natural world. Both have been inspired by their fathers, yet manage to make their way in a field dominated by the male species of scientist. One wonders why this book is called “Lab Girl” and not “Highly Successful Scientist”. The secret lies in the way that Hope Jahren retains her innocent eye and her capacity for rejoicing every time she discovers a new genetic strain or procedure that changes the way scientists think about the world. For instance, when she makes the discovery that opal is the mineral that is essential for the growth of the hackberry tree, she writes, “I was, in addition to being small and insufficient, special. I was not only a quirky bundle of genes, but I was also unique existentially, because of the tiny detail that I knew about Creation, because of what I had seen and then understood.” Her research takes her around the United

States and around the world and we share her fascination with the variety of plant species and the challenges that every new ecological environment presents. But apart from the wealth of information that she shares with the reader, there are also the little details that make you catch your breath. Like the sentence “The life of a deciduous tree is ruled by its annual budget.” She then goes on to explain how a Maple tree stores sunshine when it is available, how it manufactures and retains sucrose in its leaves, and how it absorbs the magnesium, phosphorus and iron in the mineral grains in the soil. Pure magic! And she reveals it to you. There is no way you can look at a tree or a mushroom in the same way after you have read
this book. Apart from the description of her marriage and the birth of her son, there is an unexpected emotional thread that runs through the book. It is her caring relationship with Bill, her totally eccentric assistant, upon whom she relies for all the basic scientific equipment and practical know-how to support her research. More steadfast than a lover and less demanding than a family member, Bill is her mainstay and she moves heaven and earth to keep him funded as the most important member of her team. This is a truly moving and enlightening book, as surprising as “Educated”, as enlightening as “The Signature of All Things”, yet somehow more engrossing than either. A total delight to read.

Skating on Thick Ice When luck is on our side an ice show comes to Artscape at the beginning of the year, in the middle of summer. Perhaps the Russian skaters like flying south in their winter! This year Pieter Toerien Productions had the Artscape Opera House stage covered in a (thick) layer of ice for a production of Peter Pan on Ice. The Franschhoek Culture Vultures had been waiting for the news and at the appropriate time made their move and called the box office. It was a typical warm summer’s evening when the group gathered to board their bus in Franschhoek and head for Cape Town. Chilled MCC from Leopard’s Leap was opened to mark the occasion and wines and snacks were packed for later. The show was magical. Champion ice skaters glided and raced across the ice. They flew into the air, came down again gracefully, partnered each other at speed and did spectacular lifts. At the end of show when Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker Bell and their friends and family had told their story, the cast impressed the audience with skating moves that only champions could possibly accomplish. The visiting stars could not have wished for a more appreciative audience. On the homeward journey the Culture Vultures agreed that Franschhoek kids should not miss out on such a magical show. They set about making an outing to the ice show possible for some youngsters who may not otherwise have the opportunity of going to Artscape. It simply had to be done; it was done and you can see the report elsewhere in this issue. If you would like to receive information on future outings, please send your name, email address and cell phone number to news@franschhoektatler.co.za
A personal selection by Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg As part of the fiftieth jubilee of La Motte’s Rupert ownership, owner Hanneli RupertKoegelenberg invites art-lovers to an exhibition of rare and important artworks that shares some favourite works from her collection as well as the family collection and allows insight into her love for art. The exhibition, entitled ‘Celebrating the love of Art – a personal selection by Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg’, acknowledges her appreciation of the arts and their preservation, a passion she shares with her late parents, Dr Anton and Mrs Huberte Rupert.

La Motte’s Harvest Experience A Celebration of Winelands Traditions Harvest-time gives emphasis to the story of the wine grape. Long before being discussed at dinner tables or poured into beautiful stemware to be raised in celebration, wine had its origin in the honesty of soil. Grown in neat rows against mountain slopes or in valley floor clusters, vines reach their life’s purpose during the harvest and determine the livelihood and traditions of the communities around them. Be part of the story of wine and enjoy the energy and excitement of harvest-time in the Cape Winelands with the La Motte Harvest Experience. Join one of the estate’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable wine tasting ambassadors during harvest time for a celebration of the unique harvest traditions. In the vineyard: Enjoy an introduction to the various varietals, harvest processes and the estate’s biologic farming practices. Spot the differences between the various varieties and taste the sweetness of the ripe berries. In the cellar: Experience the hand-sorting of grapes, crush, pump-overs and other cellar activities, concluded with a tasting of grape must (fermenting grape juice) from a fermentation tank. In the tasting room: Sit down to a tasting of La Motte’s award-winning collection of wines – five wines from the La Motte Collection as well as the two wines from the estate’s renowned Pierneef Collection. In the shade of the age-old oaks: Relax in the calm ambience of the estate gardens and enjoy Chef Eric Bulpitt’s special Harvest Plate – with a glass of wine of course! The Harvest Experience, at R120 per person, includes the vineyard and cellar tour as well as wine tasting. It takes about 90 minutes and is available hourly from Tuesdays to Fridays, between 10h00 and 15h00 until the end of March. The Harvest Plate is additional and optional and is available at R180 per person. It consists of smoked and flaked West Coast line fish with must

velouté, grapes and baby spinach and is served with grape focaccia. La Motte’s renowned ‘mosbolletjies’ are available at the La Motte Farm Shop for the duration of harvest. tasting@la-motte.co.za | 021 876 8820

Ice Show Magic A treat was in store for twenty under-privileged learners from Franschhoek High School on 1 February this year. They were taken to Artscape by bus to see a matinee of Peter Pan on Ice. Two of their teachers accompanied them on the trip. The outing came about after the Culture Vultures saw the show and decided that the local kids should not miss out. They wanted the youngsters to experience the magic and set about making the necessary arrangements. They could not have asked for better support. Pieter Toerien Productions generously made some of the best seats in the house available at greatly-reduced cost; at the school Ms Myburgh – the acting principal – and Ms Fortuin settled the matter of getting 20 learners ready and Good Food & Co discounted their delicious sandwiches so enough could be bought for the inbound and outbound trips. Culture Vulture donations covered all the costs. They were happy to include a ticket for the bus driver who also loved the show. Everyone had a marvellous time. Feedback from the learners expressed appreciation for an unforgettable experience and marvel at the wonder of Artscape. They loved the story, the flights through the air, the fast skating combining ice dancing with spectacular lifts and, of course, the dancing crocodile. Here is what some of them said: Matsiliso Sephula: “This was my first time going to the Artscape. I didn’t know what to expect. Peter Pan is one of my favourites and watching it on ice just blew me away. This is one of the experiences I’ll never forget.” Kylie Donaldson: “The way the actors moved, was so majestic and graceful. I really hope I would get to see this again. I enjoyed every moment of it, especially the tic toc croc dance.” Roseline Fortune: “Vandag was een van die beste dae van my lewe. Dit was die eerste keer wat ek die Artscape bygewoon het.” Lauren Boonzaaier: “Dit was ongelooflik lekker. Dit is defnitief iets besonders wat ek nie sal vergeet
nie. Dit het gevoel ons is deel van die drama. Ons kon lekker saam lag en terselfde tyd geskok wees om te sien hoe hulle mense in die lug gooi terwyl hulle op ysskaatse is, maar steeds dit so mooi en maklik laat lyk.” Katelynn Adonis: “Die Peter Pan on Ice opvoering was ’n ongelooflike ervaring. Marceleno Groenewald: “Peter Pan was baie mooi. Net die manier hoe hulle op die ys dans. Dis herinneringe wat ek nooit sal vergeet nie. Die draak was die beste.” Asevela Moyikwa: “The drive to the Artscape theatre was a wonderful experience. The play was very nice, the setup beautiful and the play was educational as well. Even though throughout the play, not any words were said by the characters. They conveyed the message or moral of the play through actions.” Denilson Dirks: “Eerstens wil ek net dankie sê. Die Peter Pan on Ice was regtig een van die coolste dramas wat ek nog ooit beleef het. Ek het van die scene gehou waar die fairy so vlieg met die verskillende kleure. Die einde was net so fantasties.” Meche Fortuin: “My ervaring van Peter Pan on Ice was ‘n baie ongelooflike ervaring.” Text: Editorial Desk
Tennis: Best Served Lights On At the Franschhoek Theatre The exhibition ‘Match in Africa’ between tennis icons Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, on Friday 7 February, broke two records. Not only did the game make history as the tennis match with the highest ever attendance, it also became the fastest-selling Computicket event in South Africa. Local tennis fans, who missed out on tickets, also had to contend with load shedding from 20h00 to 22h00. Fortunately, Franschhoek Theatre organised a generator to keep the lights on and bring the game to their big screen. Upon arriving at the historic building located on the grounds of Franschhoek High School, each member of the tennis crowd was welcomed with a complimentary glass of bubbly. Adding to the ambience was the delicious smell of boerie rolls from the braai where Colleen Douglas and her
hospice team were preparing court-side sustenance. Laughter soon rang out from the theatre at the celebrity doubles match for which Trevor Noah joined team Nadal, while Bill Gates sided with Federer. ‘Fedegates’ took the win, but it was a game defined by fun above all else. After a brief pause to switch to the generator, the theatre was up and running in time for the big match, and fans were treated to the biggest game of tennis that most had ever seen. Both Federer and Nadal showed the skills that define them as
players, but their smiles and interviews scored the points for the Federer Foundation that the game was supporting. Whether watching the Rugby World Cup or a charity tennis match, there are sporting moments that are best enjoyed on a big screen. One could argue that locally there is none better than the really big screen at Franschhoek Theatre. Game, set and match? Text: Pieter Naudé

Franschhoek Heritage and Ratepayers Association
A b o u t F H R PA . F o u r y e a r s a g o t h e F ra n s c h h o e k H e r i t a g e Tr u s t a n d t h e Franschhoek Ratepayers Association joined forces in order to more effectively serve the wider community. Recognising that the unique character of Franschhoek depends on both its physical attributes and its people, the Association is focussed on maintaining continuity between the rich cultural history of the village and the future well-being of the people who live and work here. The work of the Association is accomplished through two committees working closely together to facilitate communication between various interest groups and government. How we work. The Ratepayers Committee deals primarily with operational issues related to daily living in the community, such as traffic, parking, security, waste collection and recycling, and other municipal services. The Heritage Committee deals with physical issues related to the character of the village and its surroundings. The two committees work closely together to help balance the needs of the tourist and agricultural sectors that underpin the local economy and the quality of life of the community at large. What we do. We meet regularly with the Mayor, Ward Councillors, government traffic, planning, and engineering departments; and Franschhoek Tourism to address issues affecting the wider community. We provide feedback to the Municipality of Stellenbosch on draft policies and regulations. We provide opinions to the Municipality and to Heritage Western Cape on applications for re-zoning, refurbishment, and new construction. We
interface with neighbourhood interest groups and help them to formulate action plans when required. In the year ahead we are planning to increase our effectiveness as a representative body. With 300 members currently, we are already the largest nongover nmenta l public organisation in Franschhoek. We recognise, however, that in order to fully represent the wider community, we need to increase and diversify our membership and to secure greater participation of local businesses. Work has already begun on drafting a series of ideas and suggestions that can feed into the longrange master plan for Franschhoek/Groendal that will be prepared by the Municipality. Public participation in this process will be an important factor in ensuring that our vision for the future of the village reflects the priorities and aspirations of the community at large. Do you have any ideas or concerns? If you are experiencing problems related to traffic safety, noise pollution, security, or any other issues, please contact us. By consolidating the complaints and suggestions of residents and business owners, we are able to help frame and present possible solutions as part of a coordinated, collective effort. This approach tends to carry more weight with government than individual actions. Do you plan to build or refurbish? If you make an appointment with us before you start preparing design documents, our architectural team can offer suggestions that
will ultimately save you time and money. In the early stages of the design process, we can help you identify the key aspirations and requirements of current planning regulations and policies, thus streamlining the approval process that follows. Would you like to help? If you have any ideas that you feel can improve the experience of living and working in the village, please send us your suggestions. Alternatively you might consider serving on one of our committees, which meet once a month, volunteering your time for tasks requiring specialised expertise, or making a cash contribution to support our operational costs. Become a member. Signing up will take you no more than one minute. All you have to do is to visit our website and provide your name and e-mail address. Please visit our website at fhrpa.co.za or write to us at FHRPA, PostNet Suite No. 8, Private Bag X19, Franschhoek, 7690.
The Annual General Meeting of FHRPA will be held on Wednesday, 22 April 2020 at 17:30, Town Hall, Franschhoek All residents, property owners and business owners are encouraged to attend. Please RSVP to info@fhrpa.co.za If you would like to serve on one of our committees for the coming year, please send your expression of interest to info@fhrpa.co.za no later than 15 March

Community Notice Prescribed Ecological Burn Franschhoek A prescribed ecological burn is planned for mid-April 2020 in the area below the Franschhoek Pass and above the Fransche Hoek Estate. The purpose of the burn operation is to reduce the fuel load of the 20 - 30 year old vegetation, thus reducing fire risk, and facilitating healthy regrowth of the fynbos. Fynbos requires fire every 15 - 20 years to maintain optimum bio-diversity. The Operation will be conducted and co-ordinated by a multi-agency team including both District and Local Municipal Fire Services, The Winelands Fire Protection Association, The Franschhoek Conservancy, Cape Nature, Stellenbosch Environmental Services, Cape Winelands District fire-fighting resources, Franschhoek WFPA fire teams, contracted ground fire teams, Stellenbosch and Provincial Traffic Services.
