Dassenberg Road confusion Road through vineyard new public servitude road
The old Dassenberg Road (far left) and the new public servitude road through the vineyard (right)
The Dassenberg Road has long been a favourite route of local walkers, runners and riders – also for savvy motorists wishing to avoid the occasional traffic snarl-up in Huguenot Street. When construction on the new bridge, near Grande Provence, and a new road through the vineyard started, many road users were intrigued. Intrigue, however turned to dismay recently when signs were erected stating that the public road is to be deproclaimed. The Tatler visited Leeu Estates, owner of the new road, and met up with General Manager, Matthew Smith, and some concerned road users to get to the bottom of the issue. Matthew was quick to allay fears, making it clear that “the new paved road through the vineyard is the new public road for the use of the public.” He continued,
“A servitude in perpetuity has been registered on the new paved road in favour of the general public. The signs that have been erected relate to the process that has now been started to deproclaim the section of the old Dassenberg Road leading past the old Von Ortloff werf to the bridge in order to turn it into a private farm road.” Although there is a legal distinction between the status of the old road vs the new one (proclaimed divisional minor road vs servitude road) it has no effect on the public’s right to use the Dassenberg Road – except for the route change. As Leeu Estates is the owner of the new road they will also be responsible for its maintenance – something locals know the district roads authorities have not excelled at in the past when it came to the old Dassenberg Road!
Keeping the railway (bridge) shipshape Motorists crossing the Berg River Bridge on the R45 may have noticed over the past several weeks that a team of workers has been busy stripping away the peeling paint and rust on the adjacent railway bridge and giving it a fresh coat of warship grey paint. Having recently learnt that the branch line to Ceres has of late been reopened, the Tatler decided to make some enquiries about the activity at the bridge. The man with the answers turned out to be David Blythe of the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which we learnt has now also introduced a Sundowner Tapas Tour to Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate. According to Blythe, “Under our lease agreement with Transnet we are responsible for the upkeep
of the infrastructure.” Work on the Berg River Bridge was completed in mid-September. The focus of attention then shifted to the Dwars River Bridge, work on which should also be completed by the time the October Tatler hits the streets. The paintwork on the Berg River Bridge took a team of 7 workers more than a month to complete and required 240 litres of water-based paint. An unintended advantage to the work being carried out on the bridge is that visitors to the valley now don’t have to look at a rusty structure that reflects badly on the area, as they make their way into the valley. www.winetram.co.za | 021 300 0338

A giant leap for leopardkind
The 4 chefs who prepared the delectable lunch at the Cape Leopard Trust fundraiser. FLTR: Pieter de Jager, Christo Pretorius, Michelle Theron and Floris Smit.
A total amount of R460 600 was raised for the conservation of leopards at a lunch at Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards in August. The occasion was the second annual Cape Leopard Trust fundraiser at which celebrity MCs Africa Melane and Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp commendably guided 200 guests through proceedings. It was an unusual treat for attendees to be welcomed by riel dancers; not just any riel dancers, but Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers who recently won gold at an international competition in Los Angeles. Lunch was prepared by four renowned chefs who each spent a bit of time on camera beamed onto screens as they explained their fine creations. Christo Pretorius came from Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, Floris Smit came from Bushman’s Kloof, Michelle Theron came from La Motte and Pieter de Jager simply stayed in his own kitchen at Leopard’s Leap. After lunch the auction got under way. Items as
varied as a balloon safari valued at R6 000, a chef ’s table at Pierneef à La Motte valued at R12 000 and a Kim Donaldson painting valued at R10 000 found homes with generous bidders. In thanking sponsors and guests Helen Turnbull, CEO of the Cape Leopard Trust, said, “We are extremely grateful to all those who participated. The funds raised this year will go towards sustaining The Cape Leopard Trust operations, primarily paying airtime for satellite tracking collars, fuel and financing the resumption of the Cederberg leopard research project.” Hein Koegelenberg, CEO of Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards was a gracious host as always and said “Leopard’s Leap has been a proud sponsor of the trust since its inception and we have enjoyed being the host and associate of such a great cause and what has become a highly celebrated and enjoyed annual event.” www.capeleopard.co.za | www.leopardsleap.co.za

R100k boost for bursary fund The FREMCO Trust Bursary Fund received the first of an annual R100 000 donation from the Fransche Hoek Estate Home Owners Association on 9 September. This follows an agreement entered into earlier this year between FREMCO, the HOA and the original developer, Frandevco. The FREMCO Trust came to be as a result of the development of the estate on what was formerly municipal commonage and its beneficiaries are the formerly disadvantaged communities of Franschhoek. The weather may have been 'terribly good' but that didn't stop the second running of the Trail du Mont Rochelle
The second Trail du Mont Rochelle trail run that took place on Sunday, 30 August, was another great success. Even the rainy the weather – described by the organisers as “terribly good” – seemed to simply motivate the runners more, apparently lending the event a “European feeling”! Runners had a choice of three routes – 12km, 18km or 25km – all of which started and ended at the Franschhoek High School rugby field. The longest route included the two highest peaks in the nature reserve, DuToitskop and Perdekop, and all three routes provided spectacular views of the mountain scenery and valley – at least during the periods when the foggy conditions cleared a little. While most runners relished the wet conditions they did increase the risk of injuries and increased the amount of time some participants spent on their derrieres! Fortunately the medical teams didn’t have to deal with any serious injuries.

One of the highlights of this year’s race was the inclusion of the new Winelands Trail. The construction of this trail earlier this year has eliminated two crossings of the Franschhoek Pass, thus improving the safety of participants and simplifying the race logistics. It has also opened up entirely new vistas to runners and hikers alike. Further good news is that the Trail du Mont Rochelle will be included in the SA Skyrunner Series for 2016. The 25km ladies race was won by SA national trail runner, Megan Mackenzie (sponsored by Salomon), who represented SA in the World Championships in Zermat, Switzerland, in July. Kane Reilly (also sponsored by Salomon) won the men’s 25km race. Since returning from injury Reilly has won every race he’s participated in this year! www.traildumontrochelle.com | www. montrochellehiking.co.za

Western Cape green farming portal
GP15.01
Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, officially launched the Western Cape’s GreenAgri web portal at the Backsberg Estate Cellars on 9 September. The initiative is a partnership between the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and GreenCape. “The GreenAgri portal is an interactive portal for farmers, researchers and the private sector that showcases the latest environmentally-friendly farming practices. It also provides information on the Western Cape Government’s green policies and the industry is able to comment on government proposals on these policies.” Minister Winde said “More and more agri-businesses are going green. That is why we’ve launched the GreenAgri portal at Backsberg, which is one of the world’s first wine producers to launch a carbon neutral wine. These are the kinds of stories we need to promote.” Minister Winde said the portal would provide support to emerging, urban and small-scale farmers. “Farmers will be able to leave messages and we’ll be able to interact with them and address their concerns or questions. It’s accessible on PC, smartphone and tablet.” “We know that factors such as climate change pose a threat to food security globally. Through this portal, we are using technology to give farmers the information they need to farm sustainably.”
The portal includes the following categories: Green action plans and policies: All departmental, national and provincial green policies and initiatives. This will allow all industry participants to identify the broad “green” action plans for the province; Tips and tools: This section includes: • Tips on smart agriculture principles and practices; • Online tools including Fruitlook, the Climate Information Platform and the Cape Farm Mapper; • Funding and incentives to assist with smart agriculture; • Events, training and networking opportunities; • FAQs on Smart Agriculture; Green projects and research: This tool will update users on the latest developments in green research as well as assist researchers in getting feedback on their research. SmartAgri: The key status quo reports, comprehensive stakeholder information and resources of the Western Cape’s climate change response plan, SmartAgri project, will be available to users; Your input: Registered users will be able to pose questions and identify research gaps concerning smart agriculture; Green contacts: GreenCape will be able to provide users with the relevant contact details. www.greenagri.org.za C

PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH “LES VIGNERONS DE FRANSCHHOEK”
La Motte
Pierneef a La Motte’s
Grapes from one specific site in the Franschhoek area are combined with a secret French barrel selection, to produce the classic flavours that give this style its world-wide appeal. The wine is light in texture, but has all the charm of a worldclass example of this variety, as it has proved to be. Cellar Price: R110
Ingredients 2 Tbsp (30 ml) olive oil; 1 Tbsp (15 ml) butter; 500 g mixed field mushrooms or brown mushrooms; 2 gloves garlic; 1 knob fresh root ginger, peeled and finely chopped; Salt and freshly ground black pepper; 1 Tbsp (15 ml) chopped fresh oregano; ¼ cup (60 ml) grated Parmesan cheese; ½ cup (125 ml) goat’s chévre cheese; 1 spring onion, chopped; ¼ quantity basic pasta dough; 1 Beaten egg or water, for brushing; Chopped spring onion and grated Parmesan cheese, for serving; Olive oil or melted butter, for drizzling
Chardonnay 2013
Ravioli with wild mushrooms and goat’s cheese x 1 m long strips. Place the first strip on a floured surface, brush lightly with egg or water and place the mushroom balls at 5 cm intervals. Place the second pasta sheet on top and gently press and press over the mushroom mixture. Remove all the air around the mushroom ball. Use a cookie cutter to cut out the ravioli. Cut the pasta 1-2 cm larger than the mushroom ball and squeeze the edges gently to prevent it from opening. Place in boiling water for a minute or two until cooked. A good indication that they are done is when they float to the surface. Serve sprinkled with spring onions, freshly grated Parmesan and good olive oil or melted butter.

Method Heat frying pan, add the oil, brown the butter and sauté the mushrooms, garlic and ginger. Strain the fat and season, the mushrooms with salt, pepper and oregano. On and Off Course Lawrence Gould
Welcoming old friends It is with personal delight that I learnt that the Leeu Collection has appointed Luis Pinheiro as the Regional Director and General Manager of Le Quartier Français in Franschhoek. The pleasure is made by the fact that Luis Pinheiro and his wife Anthea and their delightful daughters, Caitlin (19) and Courtnay (18) are friends of many years. Luis (born in Mozambique, but grew up predominantly in Johannesburg) set his sights early on going into the hotel industry. At the age of 18 he started working at the famous Carlton Hotel in Johannesburg as a waiter in the then-legendary Top of the Carlton cocktail lounge. He joined the hotel’s training programme, moving through all the different departments and working his way up the ranks while studying at the same time to gain his Hotel Management qualification through the American Hotel & Motel Association. He and Anthea met at the Carlton in 1986 when Anthea also joined the hotel’s in-service training programme. There they met Peggy Klement from the USA, known to many as ‘My Peggy’ (now the GM of La Clé des Montagnes), as she was also on the training programme.
Cellar Chat Mark Tanner While we in Franschhoek may luxuriate in our cornucopia of haute cuisine, haute wines and haute whatever, there are some adventurers who take it upon themselves to explore our neighbouring wine regions. They go off to sip and spit (perhaps) in the realms of Walker Bay, Robertson, the Swartland and probably others too. After spending a day enjoying such foreign environments they return with their car boot laden with lesser known labels. I admire such split loyalty. With a change being as good as a holiday why not display one's adventurous spirit? It is after all part and parcel of being a Franschhoeker. We are able to visit our wineries not only by car but also by horseback and, more recently, by tram. Compared to our neighbours we are indeed the most adventurous. In keeping with this 'tradition' I was delighted to
Luis joined Orient Express after the Carlton and was at the Mount Nelson Hotel before being transferred to the Reid’s Palace Hotel in Madeira, after which he was sent to manage the newly acquired Lapa Palace Hotel in Lisbon. After nearly 7 years in Portugal, the last few being in the Algarve running all the Pestana Hotel properties, he returned to Cape Town to manage the Table Bay Hotel. For the last 4½ years he has been based in Mozambique managing the resorts and investments for Rani Resorts. That this wonderful family are ‘old friends’ is best illustrated by the fact that when ‘My Peggy’ and I met 25 years ago I had to accept an invitation from the retired legendary Carlton concierge, Leslie Hurst, and Anthea and Luis to see if I was suitable to court Ms Peggy Klement. It seems I passed the test and I have been enjoying their company ever since – a bonus of which is that Anthea is an absolutely brilliant cook! The accompanying picture has the family at an Italian cooking class. ‘My Peggy’ and I now look forward to more great meals with our ‘Old Friends’. meet the arrival of Discovery Aviation's Eurocopter A 350 'Squirrel' as it lowered itself onto the helipad at Rickety Bridge in early September. This magnificent machine (‘Skyhorse’) is being positioned in our valley for wine tourism purposes. It is also available for transfers and other aerial activities. Just imagine a flying wine tour! One could visit a couple of our local estates before flying off to Hermanus over spectacular scenery. Within 25 minutes you could be whale watching before a leisurely lunch at a vineyard restaurant, returning via False Bay and Table Mountain. Or perhaps you’d prefer a crayfish lunch at Paternoster via the Riebeeks and Darling? The permutations are considerable, as is the added value compared to a standard day in the vines. All very fine, but what about the expense? Obviously it’s not cheap, but what does a 30 minute flip of some 100km plus around the Boland vineyards put one back? Indications are that it would be well within one's expectations for a significant celebratory event. In all, this is a step up the ladder for adventurous spirits, maybe even two steps, and I applaud their confidence in the future if our valley.

Madame Lamb Burger's final baaa! Chefs and restaurateurs have a love-hate relationship with it: that one menu item that sells extraordinarily well, season after season, and just cannot be removed from the menu – however bored the kitchen gets with preparing it. In Le Quartier Français’ case this item was the Lamb Burger. Or Madame Lamb Burger as she was formally known. Eventually though, after a long and storied history at Le Quartier – as she simply calls it, Madame Lamb Burger succumbed. Like any good thing, however, you couldn’t keep Madame down forever and she reincarnated herself a number of times – usually just in time for the Franschhoek Bastille or MCC and Champagne Festivals. At these events Madame generally took on the persona of Mademoiselle Lamb Burger (ostensibly her niece) and shared the limelight with her favourite groupie – a glass of Môreson’s Miss Molly bubbly. For the 2010 soccer world cup Madame Lamb Burger even arrived as the Baaa-fana Burger. (You’ve guessed it, Madame’s soccer-mad nephew!) With Le Quartier Français’ recent sale it was therefore probably to be expected that Madame Lamb Burger would make one final brief appearance. From 28 – 30 August Madame Lamb Burger once again grazed (get it?) her ancestral home on the corner of Huguenot and Berg Streets. Like many admirers, the Tatler’s editor went along for one final fling with Madame Lamb Burger. On arrival at Madame’s home I was shown to her favourite space for day-time socialising – The Garden Room. Her groupies, led by Miss Molly, were soon there fussing over me. Madame, in imperial fashion, makes even old friends wait a while before making her

entrance. When she did enter, she did so memorably: wrapped in a toasted focaccia worn over jewelcoloured layers of baby greens, marinated cherry tomatoes and avocado cream. Topping it all off was a bright pickled cucumber salad. Coquettish as always, I thought. Gentlemen don’t kiss and tell, but I can say that our time together was marked by mixed feelings. We were delighted to share each other’s company again, but couldn’t escape the knowledge that only one of us would leave the room in an unaltered state. Time with old flames passes far too quickly. When it was time to say goodbye no words were needed. A knowing glance cast back over her shoulder as she disappeared from sight was all that was needed.

Leopard’s Leap Chenin Blanc in Top 10 The second annual Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge unlocked the obvious potential of Chenin Blanc with pure fruit, complexity, balance, some weight and power indicating the best of the best. For five of the top 10 – KWV, Perdeberg, Simonsig, Spier and Stellenrust – it was a repeat of last year’s performance. Franschhoek’s Leopard’s Leap was one of the five new entrants in the top 10. A total of 145 wines were entered into the competition, (15% up from the previous year) and tasted blind with no indication of vintage, cellar treatment or technical analysis by the five-person panel including Christian Eedes, one of South Africa’s most respected wine judges as chairperson; UK wine writer Jamie Goode, Master Sommelier Higgo Jacobs, François Rautenbach, who heads up the ‘Singita Premier Wine Direct’ programme, Cathy van Zyl, Master of Wine,
as well as associate judges JaapHenk Koelewijn and Tongai Joseph Dhafana. “The overall quality was very good,” said Eedes. “Chenin Blanc is now such a high-calibre category that it is quite possible to conceive of two or three other equally plausible line-ups of winners in addition to the official top 10.” The Leopard's Leap Culinaria Chenin Blanc 2014 consists of 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Grenache Blanc, with the former coming from the Voor Paardeberg area and the latter from Franschhoek. The wine has a well-defined ripe fruit character, showing ample apricot, pear, pineapple and kiwi flavours, supported by sweetspice flavours and a zippy tartness. Elegant oak nuances make this wine a unique food companion. At R70 per bottle the Leopard’s Leap Culinaria Chenin Blanc was the least expensive wine in the top 10 and is only available from the Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards. www.leopardsleap.co.za | 021 876 8002

Two local chefs among Nederburg Auction ‘food masters’

Grande Provence fine dining stalwart The Restaurant at Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate took centre stage at the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards clinching a 10-year accolade for once again securing its place in the lineup of fine dining restaurants in the Cape Winelands. “We are, as always, extremely proud that our commitment and dedication to be on the cutting edge with our restaurant has been recognised. By combining great food and wine, a welcoming atmosphere and stunning views, we have created the ideal haven for fine dining in the Franschhoek Winelands,” says General Manager and Winemaker, Karl Lambour. The 18th annual American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards paid tribute to restaurants that offer superb culinary experiences, push the envelope in terms of creativity and consistently achieve excellence. Guided by the culinary prowess of Executive Chef Darren Badenhorst and tailor-made wine pairings by restaurant manager/Sommelier Khuselo Mputa, the team at The Restaurant at Grande Provence are inspired by the time honoured practices and precision of French cuisine, combined with the bold flavours of Asia. reservations@grandeprovence.co.za | 021 876 8600
The Nederburg Auction’s four food masters: (FLTR) Fritz Schoon (Schoon de Companje, Stellenbosch), Chris Erasmus (Foliage, Franschhoek), Neil Jewell (Bread & Wine, Môreson, Franschhoek), Gustaaf Boshoff (Stir Food, Somerset West).
Four local ‘food masters’ combined their respective culinary talents to create a fascinating lunch menu for guests attending the Nederburg Auction on 11 and 12 September. Stir Food’s Gustaaf Boshoff and baker Fritz Schoon of Schoon de Companje, together with Franschhoekers Chris Erasmus from Foliage restaurant and Neil Jewell from Môreson Estate’s Bread & Wine restaurant presented a menu that promoted sustainable food options beyond tomorrow. Dishes included salads made with seasonal foraged leaves, beef cooked in a stock made from handcollected forest floor and burnt bark and served with forest mushrooms, and buchu ice-cream. “We initially thought of bringing together modern cooking techniques, but decided in the end to make the menu more relevant to South Africa and came up with the idea of sustainable food options beyond tomorrow,” says Boshoff. These include supporting local, small farmers producing specialist, heirloom grains, and using sustainable techniques of foraging for ingredients used in the dishes served at the Auction. Chris Erasmus and his team collected pine rings,
mushrooms and stalks for their “terroir-peri” – ingredients used in making a “forest floor” braising stock for their beef main course. “We are more conscious of nature, of weather changes and the implications of what we are doing to our environment. It’s great that the organisers aligned this philosophy with the auction,” he said. Baker Fritz Schoon started a grain movement with Free State grain farmer James Moffat to source and plant the oldest varieties and heirloom varieties of wheat. These were used to bake bread and baguettes at the auction, including Highland hard red wheat sourdough loaves, banana and chocolate loaves, and baguettes rolled in coarse-milled organic mealie meal. Through this movement, Schoon believes, they are helping to create whole new industries. “In a couple of years, every bakery will have naturally farmed flour because of this movement, and farmers will be winning all the way.” Charcutier Neil Jewell agrees. “I think South Africa is going in a better direction with its food by supporting small farmers and local producers.” www.nederburgauction.co.za

Zambonelli predicted the imminent appearance of truffles in the area after a thorough on-site root inspection of the orchard trees earlier this year, before it was discovered by Clyde’s ‘clever nose’ in July. In the future, the orchard will be monitored on a weekly basis until the end of the winter harvest season. This will be done by Clyde and his fellow furry companion, Bonnie, who will soon be joined by Zippy – the farm’s latest addition. South Africa’s first black diamond truffle was unearthed in Mpumalanga in January this year.

Woodford Truffles South Africa has recently confirmed the discovery of the first Black Perigord Truffle in the Western Cape on the farm Altima, one of the properties within the Anthonij Rupert Wyne portfolio. After six years of the required nurturing and care by Coenie and Hanene Van Dyk, the managers at Altima, their Jack Russel, Clyde, sniffed out the 200gm truffle in the brulé of one of the inoculated oak trees. According to Woodford Truffles SA’s dog trainers they have been on the prowl for the elusive truffle for the past two years. Italian truffle guru, Prof Alessandra
Most local wine cognoscenti know that La Couronne wine estate’s name means ‘the crown’. What they probably don’t know is that there is also a French nautical connection to the estate’s name. It is this connection that is celebrated in the estate’s newly re-organised wine ranges and updated labels. La Couronne was a famed French warship built in 1636 by Cardinal de Richelieu. The ship was the first man-of-war built by the French themselves, in accordance with Richelieu's plans to renew the French Navy, after a series of ships built by the Dutch. At the time the ship was one of the most advanced vessels ever to set sail. She was equipped with 68 heavy guns, 8 firing to the bow and 8 to the aft, an unusual feature until Dupuy de Lôme redesigned naval artillery. Two of La Couronne’s wine ranges now sport labels featuring a drawing this trend-setting ship. At the top end of the offering is the Admiral’s Choice range, consisting of a wooded Chardonnay and a Malbec – both styles that have historically done the estate proud. Slotting in under the Admiral’s Choice is the Commander’s Selection. This range of seven wines consists of two varietal white wines, a rosé, a Bordeaux style blend and three varietal red wines. Completing the estate’s line-up is the wallet-friendly Sailor’s Choice range consisting of the Upper Deck White and Upper Deck Red blend. The estate’s wines have certainly lived up to the billing on their labels and have already been crowned with several awards this year. The Sauvignon Blanc 2014 and Unwooded Chardonnay 2015 won gold medals at the Gold Wine Awards; not be outdone the Merlot Rosé 2015 and Upper Deck Red 2014 received gold medals at Vitis Vinifera and the Bordeaux-style Portside Red 2013 was awarded a bronze medal at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. More importantly, perhaps, the judges acknowledged it as the best Bordeaux blend in its price class. Situated within easy walking distance of the village the estate offers picnics in the huge garden surrounding the winery, or cheese platters to enjoy with your wine tasting. Chocoholics should note that the estate also offers a chocolate and wine tasting – talk about the best of both worlds! www.lacouronnewines.co.za | 021 876 3939

much smaller lungs, so don’t forcefully blow into their lungs.) Don't waste time by trying to drain swallowed water. If the person starts breathing again, they’re likely to vomit. Turn their head to the side or place them on their side to clear the airways. If you suspect a spine injury carefully turn the patient as a unit to keep the head and neck aligned. If there’s no pulse, place the person on a hard surface and do CPR. Take care not to extend the head backwards but make sure that adequate chest expansion is possible. Place the person in the recovery position if there are no spinal injuries. This position ensures that the airways remain clear and open, and also prevents choking. Keep the person warm with a ‘space blanket’ or, if not available, with dry clothes, blankets, towels and/ or black refuse bags to prevent hypothermia. Call a doctor if someone has nearly drowned, even if they’ve recovered completely. All near-drowning victims should be observed in hospital for 24 hours. Memorise the number for emergency services in your area and keep the number saved in your cell phone or near your landline telephone,” advises Fedhealth. The national emergency number is 10177 from a landline or 112 from a cellphone. Locally call Medicare EMR on 074 363 7744.

In South Africa, 60 to 90% of drowning incidents occur in residential pools, and it is one of the top causes of unnatural deaths among South African children. Most concerning, however, is that 90% of children who drown are actually under supervision. “You simply cannot take your eyes off young children when they’re around water. As little as 5cm of water could pose a risk for a small child. Don’t assume that because a child knows how to swim that they’re not at risk of drowning,” cautions Fedhealth who last year noted an increase in drowning admissions, particularly in coastal areas. “Pool safety remains a key responsibility of any pool owner. Fence off your pool, install a pool net, and get a lockable cover for Jacuzzis or sunken baths. These are all important steps to ensure your child’s safety around the pool.” It’s important that those supervising the swimmers are vigilant at all times, because it might not always be obvious that a child or adult is in trouble in the water. Look out for signs such as a swimmer who is struggling to breathe, if the swimmer’s strokes become erratic or if the body sinks so that only the head is visible above the water. “The most important thing is safety – don’t try to rescue someone if it is going to endanger your life. We hear so many stories of people who have drowned after jumping in to try to save someone else,” advises Fedhealth. Once the swimmer is on dry land, look out for signs such as laboured breathing, uncontrolled coughing, blue-tinged skin, vomiting, a slow, weak pulse or if the person is losing consciousness. A basic course in first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can make all the difference in a life or death situation. Below are some tips on what to do in a near-drowning situation: First of all, remain calm at all times and call the emergency services. If you suspect a spinal injury (i.e. following a diving accident) and CPR isn’t required, don't move the person to land. Keep him lying face up in the water until help arrives. Take care to keep his head and neck in alignment at all times. If the person has to be moved, slide a board under their head, back and buttocks, taking care to keep the head and neck aligned. If the person isn’t breathing but has a pulse, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation immediately. (One breath every 5 seconds, making sure that you see adequate chest rise, remember children have

Marigolds – a golden choice The much loved and cultivated marigold is a firm favourite in gardens around South Africa. Its discovery by the Portuguese in Central America led to its introduction to Europe and Asia in the 16th century. Spanish explorers also took seeds to northern Africa and Spain, ensuring this beauty’s footprint was quite widespread. Just like all bedding plants, marigolds are an indispensable addition to your garden, bringing warmth with their rich colours and needing very little fussing over to be adequately cared for. Their many different shapes and size blooms can be found in shades of orange, yellow, red and bi-coloured. The modern hybrids are very uniform in growth and stay compact, making them superb plants for a mixed border, a rockery or in areas where splashes of bold colour are needed. They also look very attractive when inter-planted with other annuals. Just be sure to pick complimentary annuals that also enjoy lots of
sun, because these sun loving flowers love to bask. If you’re under the impression that marigolds require lots of water and attention, don’t worry, it’s a common misconception. In reality, marigolds generally thrive with minimal care and once established require only strategic watering during dry spells. Remember to plant your marigolds in full sun in a well composted bed. To keep the blooms blooming (up to four months at a time) deadhead them regularly. www.lifeisagarden.co.za

Walking out the door in the morning one cannot help but agree with the famed words of C. Louis Leipoldt. October is indeed the fairest month of all. It is a month of jasmine, roses, green leaves, emerging seedlings, beautiful sunsets and renewed vitality. One cannot help but feel energised by this beautiful month. We have had an abnormally dry winter and can only hope for more rain in October and even November. That might throw your gardening schedule around a bit, so my motto for this month is “do it now”. I am a serial procrastinator, but there is simply too much

to do in the garden. Tomorrow or next Saturday it might rain. And the week thereafter it might be too late. The dry winter obviously brings with it the need for more irrigation than in previous years. Make sure your system is serviced and fully operational – you don’t want to be caught unawares by a hot and dry week. We have had some wind already and it is amazing how rapidly the South-Easter can dry out the garden. Most of my time will be spend in the veggie garden. Almost everything can be sown or transplanted in October. I try to grow most veggies from seed, but always get impatient in October and buy some seedlings from a nursery to get a head start. The reward when you pick that first tomato early in December outweighs the cost. Tomatoes and peppers need warm conditions to germinate and we typically need to provide this artificially by means of a cold frame or heated greenhouse. Cucumbers, pumpkins, melons, squashes, sweetcorn, green and runner beans and okra can all be sown directly. The year round root crops do well now and you can still sow some assorted lettuce seeds. I simply chuck these into the garden at random. They are not only pretty, but seem to be plagued less by snails and caterpillars if grown in between other garden plants. The last of your cabbage family and onion seedlings should be transplanted by now. Pick strawberries regularly and try to get the ripening fruit off the ground by means of straw mulch or even plastic sheeting. Fruit trees and vineyards will need regular spraying from now on. Berry shoots must be tied up before they become too wild. Harvest lemons and limes regularly before they fall on the ground. Thinning of stone fruits lead to larger fruit. Mulch around your fruit trees and feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser. I add a foliar feed to every spray. This is my insurance against any trace element deficiencies that might be present. Your lawn (if you still have one) needs special care this month. Feed with an organic fertiliser like Neutrog’s Upsurge. Lawn dressing can still be applied. Set your mower a notch higher and mow at least once a week. Lawn caterpillars, crickets and ants can be a problem now – try to keep your sprays to organic alternatives. Hadedas should be encouraged – they are a great help in aerating the soil while eating loads of caterpillars and crickets in the process. In the kitchen I have an abundance of strawberries to process. I am looking for interesting recipes and have been scouring the internet for fresh ideas. Will keep you posted. The summer also signals our return to the Franschhoek Village Market with all sorts of delicious homemade preserves and fresh products.

Solid start for Giordano Two weeks earlier Giordano Lupini had not yet properly driven a car, but that would not stop the Franschhoek fourteen-year old from putting together a solid car racing debut in the Bold Marine GTI Challenge at the Killarney Flower Power Series races on 5 September. Experienced kart racer Giordano pulled off a unique double by reportedly becoming the youngest driver yet to race a car in the Western Province, as well as being the first fourth-generation racer. His debut performance on track also impressed many a pundit with a pair of smooth performances that saw his lap times plummet throughout his two debut-weekend races. Giordano’s adventure started two weeks before, when he took the wheel of a car in anger for the first time at a Killarney track day to become acquainted with the clutch and gear changes, let alone the quantum shift between a car and a kart’s dynamics. The following week saw the young lad take to the track in his racing Mk 1 Golf for the first time and two weeks and a good many practice sessions down the line, he was strapped in and ready for the Killarney GTI Challenge qualifying, where he posted his fastest lap yet to see to him line up 24th on the 25-car grid. Race 1 run in a searing early spring heat wave saw the Bridge House scholar put in a positive debut, circulating

smoothly and consistently to end up 22nd. The second heat saw him deliver another solid drive as he sliced ten seconds off his first race time and shave a further second off his quickest lap time, en route to a credible 17th position overall and 8th in class for the day. “I’m so happy with my first race on the big track,” Giordano explained. “I have had to learn a lot in a very short time and it’s been a special experience. “I have a lot of people to thank and it was great to be able to bring the car home in one piece, but now we need to find a little more pace – I want to be right up with the cars I was following soon!”

Replace or repair? That is the windscreen question It’s what many car owners dread, that pinging sound as a stone flicks up off the road or bounces off the back of a truck and hits your windscreen. What starts as a small chip quickly becomes a crack making its way further and further across the windscreen. Windscreens are specifically designed to provide structural support for the vehicle as well as to stand up to the stress of travelling, but damage does inevitably occur. Interestingly windscreens are actually made up of two layers of glass with an inner layer of automotive safety glass between them. This inner layer, the lamination, serves to hold together the broken outer layers in the event of an accident. That is why windscreens crack when struck by objects, but don’t fall apart and cave in on the driver in most circumstances. In the event of damage the question is whether the damage calls for a full windscreen replacement or if a repair will do. Les Mc Master, Chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), says a point to remember is that your windscreen is your protective shield. “A crack or chip compromises the efficiency of a windscreen so it may not be the wisest option to go with the cheapest route which could be the wrong one if you were in an accident,” he says. In general, however, most chips and cracks can be repaired. “Four factors are used to assess the damage – the size, type, depth, and location of the damage. This assessment needs to be done by a qualified auto glass repair technician who can then decide whether the windscreen is repairable.” “Most workshops should be able to repair chips of about 2.5cm diameter and cracks about 7cm long. Traditionally, any crack larger than that would not be repaired, but a full replacement needed. However, new technologies are making it possible to repair

The Transformer All-wheel drive transforms F Type R from contender to class leader This Jaguar F Type R looks no different to the car we drove last year. On the face of it, there indeed isn’t any change – bar a tiny chrome lug on that R badge that says AWD. This confirms a new driven front axle that transforms it from a wayward beast into a precision driving instrument – and a most significant step forward in performance driving. I moan all the time about cars that are downright dangerous in the wrong hands and the rear-drive version of this car is a case in point. Most people faced with five hundred rampant horses and torque enough to quell an atom bomb right from idle can very quickly get into in all kinds of trouble. They may as well hand you a thunder flash disguised as a cigarette – and jack it up for you too… There is however a very simple solution and Jaguar has just come to it. I was intrigued when I first learned of this AWD cat and now that I’ve driven it, I’m gobsmacked. Not only does it absolutely overcome those wayward
wider chips and longer cracks.” The type of crack is also important as there are many different types of cracks, some of which can be repaired while others can’t. “In general, chips and cracks that can be covered with a R2 coin can usually be repaired,” says Mc Master. He adds that even good repairs may leave behind some discolouration, mistiness or unevenness so location of the chip or crack is an important consideration. “If the damage is in the driver’s line of sight, a repair could distract the driver. Also any chip or crack that is at or very near the windscreen’s edge where it meets the metal frame, weakens the windscreen and compromises passenger safety. If the technician can’t see the crack or chip in its entirety, then the repair can’t be done successfully.” Typically an average chip or crack will take about 30 to 40 minutes to repair. A windscreen replacement can be done within a few hours. “Depending on how busy the workshop is you may need to book your car in for the day,” he explains. Mc Master says the key is dealing with a chip or crack as fast as possible so he recommends speaking to your insurer about what is covered and what excess you may need to pay. “Cracks lengthen before you know it. Dust also settles inside chips which can cause further damage and make repairs difficult. If you don’t act quickly what could have been an inexpensive repair job may turn into an expensive replacement. It is also vital to use a repairer who knows what he/ she is doing. Make sure the workshop you use is accredited and legit,” he advises. rear-drive habits, but it is also totally transformed into a driver’s tool of the highest order. Think I’m smoking my socks? Well, this is the fastest car we’ve ever tested to 60km/h – quicker even then the McLaren 650S and six-tenths of a second quicker than its rear-driven sibling. From 60km/h there’s no further advantage – it is simply that same six-tenths quicker all the way to the end of the quarter-mile it bursts out of at 200km/h. Those six tenths represent how much better a car this is in every respect. There’s no more sword hanging over the driver eager to put the power down for fear of the retaliation of uncontrollable wheelspin – or the car incessantly banging into that wholly overworked traction control. Now just plant it and this brilliant AWD system will sort it out to deliver spellbinding pace – no fuss, no bother, no fear – that’s all banished to history, or to the poor fool trying to pedal the rear-drive version fast. So bravo Jaguar – you’ve now proven beyond reasonable doubt that AWD is absolutely essential in this neck of the woods – and it’s downright bloody awesome too.

Franschhoek Open Gardens 2015

Editor’s Letter Siegfried Schäfer
The garden at La Rive is always a crowd pleaser
As the time approaches for the annual Open Gardens weekend (October 23, 24, 25) the thought occurs to flower lovers that much of gardening revolves around planting and watching the plants grow. This has also been the case with the Open Gardens Festival – what started on a small scale as the idea of three friends, all enthusiastic gardeners, has blossomed into one of the most anticipated events on the Franschhoek calendar. This year, as ever, ten gorgeous gardens will be on show; some new, some old favourites, but all representing the great variety for which Franschhoek is noted. Indeed, the fame of local gardens is increasingly attracting groups of garden enthusiasts and designers from outside South Africa. Enquiries have recently been received from groups as far afield as Buenos Aires and Vancouver who wish to visit outside the festival weekend. This can only be achieved by the generosity of the already overburdened garden owners, to whom heartfelt thanks is due.
This year’s festival will see a repeat of the Garden in a Pot competition, which was so enthusiastically received last year. The 20 entries will be displayed in front of the popular plant sale, outside the Town Hall. Judging time is at 11h00 on Saturday. A further attraction will be live music in several of the gardens, which will hopefully become a regular feature. As usual, there will be tea available – this year a sumptuous spread will be served at Fransvliet. There will also be a wine tasting at Grande Provence – thanks to the owners of both gardens, who will be donating the additional funds to the benefitting charity. Tickets (with maps) at R150 per person for a weekend pass are available in front of the Town Hall and at Fransvliet during the weekend. Gardens open from 10h00 to 17h00 on Friday and 09h00 to 17h00 on Saturday and Sunday. All proceeds are in aid of Fleur de Lis home for the aged.

Dear Readers Last month I had the pleasure of attending the 25-year anniversary of the Stubbs family’s Three Streams Group, which we all know for their extensive range of fish products – especially salmon and rainbow trout in various forms. Little surprise then that the luncheon, prepared by Chef Matthew Gordon, featured salmon and trout in a variety of delectable forms! There is a lot that is admirable about Three Streams Group and that makes it one of the most important businesses in the valley. Current CEO, Greg Stubbs, recognised early on that given the world’s rate of population growth and concomitant increase in the demand for seafood the only sustainable way to meet this demand is through aquaculture. Fast forward 25 years and Three Streams Group is a big player in the seafood business. Three Streams Group, with more than 200 permanent employees, is probably the biggest permanent employer in the valley. There are other entities in the valley that employ more workers at certain times, but seasonal jobs can hardly be compared with permanent jobs and the socioeconomic benefits that they bring. Franschhoek has worked hard over the years to build a reputation for excellence. Three Streams Group’s absolute commitment to quality fits easily with what the entire valley strives for. The group’s products feature on menus at virtually all our excellent restaurants. Quality begets quality. Something else that’s interesting to me is that the Three Streams Group doesn’t only produce a raw ingredient, they are vertically integrated and beneficiate their raw ingredients. I suppose that’s something that can also be said of our wine cellars, but it’s not something that can be said of, say, our plum farmers. I find this rather ironic as we’re a significant plum producing area. We should be laying claim to the title of the Plum Capital of SA and do much more with them than
just exporting the unprocessed fruit. (For what it’s worth Yuba City in California lays claim to the title of the Dried Plum Capital of the World. They used to call themselves the Prune Capital of the World, but they got tired of the jokes and changed it!) Also important to me is that Three Streams Group is a family business. (The Stubbs family has been involved in the seafood industry since the 1900s.) There was a time when it could be said that every farm in the valley was a ‘family business’, but that is hardly the case anymore. Given the increasing value we place on the provenance of products and services I think it’s nice to know that there are real people, rather than an anonymous corporate, behind at least some of them. I could go on about the Three Streams Group, but before I start boring you let me just say that I hope to attend their 50-year anniversary and that there will still be a Stubbs at the helm! Sticking to things familial, there has been a change in the Tatler family. Prof Izak Rust who was a longtime contributor to the Tatler and our proof reader has left the village to finally retire - properly this time - to the Strand. Prof Rust and his wife, Joana, moved to Franschhoek in 1997 and it wasn’t long before he was deeply involved in community life. He served on the Dutch Reformed Church Council, the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve Advisory Board and the Franschhoek Trust, amongst others, and was involved with a multitude of ad hoc community initiatives. When I took over the editorship of the Tatler from Barry Phillips in 2009 I inherited Prof Rust as proof reader and I understand that Barry had, in turn, inherited him from his predecessor, Louise Jackson. It is safe to say that we all appreciated Prof Rust’s insightful comment and eye for detail. He’ll be sorely missed, not only by the Tatler, but by everybody in the valley who’s had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. While I don’t like losing Prof Rust my mood is lightened by the fact that the role of proof reader is staying in the family. Prof Rust’s daughter, Tania van Deemter, has graciously taken over her father’s role – starting with this issue. I hope that when the time comes my successor can inherit her! Until next month

Business Leadership Tony Frost
The Business of Leadership is Relationships Leadership is all about getting others to do what you want them to do and love it and preferably to think that it was their idea in the first place. There have been millions of words written and spoken about leadership; and almost as many about what the business of business really is. Managing and leading organisational behaviour is all about creating collective action. Achieving this cannot happen without positive relationships. These relationships do not simply happen by chance. The best organisations spend great time and effort on creating corporate cultures that nurture positive relationships. Google for example ensure that people stand in a queue for their lunch and only provide long tables in the canteen to make sure that people rub shoulders and share lunch with those that they may never have even seen before. All of this in order to ensure that relationships are being built throughout the business. Great effort is invested in building relationships to create mergers and acquisitions that work. It was Winston Churchill, I believe, who said that you should keep friends close but you need to keep your enemies even closer. He also said that war always ends with talk and relationship-building. Why is it that we don’t do this before the war starts to prevent it from happening in the first place? I have paraphrased here, I know. But the lessons are clear. The average organisation has multiple relationships but, obviously, some are more important to the business than others. These relationships do not depend on the business but rather on the people in it. The propensity to create and engage in building relationships will be nurtured or discouraged by the culture and leadership of the business. If there is a deep understanding of the importance of relationships and the dependence of these on the culture and leadership then relationships will flourish. This will apply whether the relationships are with critical customers, employees or the trade unions. The other critical aspect is to make sure that the people are properly equipped to understand the social dynamics and benefits of relationship-building. These may seem to some to be small, unimportant things; or worse that this warm and fuzzy stuff makes
no contribution to the bottom line. This at best is confused thinking; and at worst cynicism of the most dangerous kind. In our own country one need only look at Marikana (and other tragedies) to see the disastrous effects of ignoring, intentionally or unintentionally, the hard work of building positive relationships. And make no mistake, it is hard work. Good relationships do not just magically fall from the sky although we dream or even imagine that this could happen. It takes focussed, conscious and intentional work to make it happen. All the world’s best organisations (and one would hope that this includes governments) claim loudly that people are their most important assets. It would be great to be able to believe this but unfortunately the reality paints a somewhat different picture. If this were so there would be much greater attention paid to the importance of people in getting things done and objectives achieved, instead of treating the employees as commodities to be bought and sold at will. There would be a much greater focus on treating them like the assets they truly are. Without people the organisation simply fails to exist. Without people the organisation is an organisation in name only. It requires at least one employee to open the door each morning; it requires an employee to switch on the computer; to operate the factory machine; to answer the telephone; to lead and manage the company and so on. If employees were truly assets they would appear on the other side of the balance sheet and not be treated as costs, but rather as investments. The appropriate amount would be spent on maintenance and development of these investments and a great deal of effort would be put into communicating effectively with them to ensure the very best return on investment. This same attitude and approach should be shown to the other critical group of people – the clients. Without these two on board at the 100% level the business/organisation will always perform at the suboptimal level. Relationships are built on a give-and-take from both parties and not as one wag put it when describing his relationship with his erstwhile wife, “I give and she takes!” The best relationships are about envisaging and building the future together using the skills, wisdom and expertise of both parties to make the picture bigger and brighter for all. This is where the work is. It takes courage and risk-taking. It needs both parties to be prepared to share and expose their vulnerabilities to and to figure out together how they can make the future the very best that it can be for everyone. This is the true essence of making the future together!

Selling your house? Choose your own conveyancer For most people, your house is your most important asset. So when you sell it, it is critical to entrust the process to a conveyancer you can trust to act with both speed and integrity. The conveyancer’s role When you sell property the conveyancer is the specialist attorney appointed as “transferring attorney” and tasked with carrying out the process of registering the buyer as the new owner. Only suitably qualified attorneys are admitted to practice as conveyancers and only they can register transfer of ownership (and other property rights like mortgage bonds, servitudes etc) in the Deeds Office. Your risk: What can go wrong? • First step in the process is normally the appointment of an estate agent to find a buyer. It is vital to have a clear agreement in place with the agent. Neither of you will want disputes to arise over the terms of the mandate or entitlement to commission. • Next is the actual sale agreement (also referred to as a “deed of sale” or “offer to purchase”). Not only must it be in writing, properly signed, and comply with a number of requirements, but things can go disastrously wrong if your agreement is unclear, ambiguous, wrongly worded, incorrectly signed etc. It is also critical that you understand exactly what you are committing yourself to –
October 2015 between R6m and R30m depending on the industrial sector or subsector in which the employer operates. 3. A municipality, as referred to in Chapter 7 of the Constitution. 4. An organ of state as defined in section 239 of the Constitution but excluding the SA National Defence Force, National Intelligence Agency, South African Secret Service. 5. Any employer who volunteers to submit an Employment Equity report. Frequency of submission of employment equity report The Employment Equity Amendment Act No.47 of 2013 brought about some important changes regarding the timing of reporting. All designated employers must report every year. There is no longer a distinction between a large employer who reports annually and a small employer who reports bi-annually. An employer that becomes designated on or after the first working day of April but before the first working day of October must only submit its first report on the first working day of October in the following year. Maximum permissible fines Schedule 1 of the Employment Equity Act (as amended) contains the list of fines which may be imposed upon an employer for contravention of the Employment Equity Act. The fines are very heavy and run into millions of Rands. These can be viewed at http://www.labour.gov.za/DOL/ downloads/legislation/acts/employment-equity/ eea_amend2014.pdf.
with very few exceptions, our law will hold you to whatever terms and conditions are in the agreement. Sign nothing until your attorney has checked everything for you! • “Time”, as the old saying goes, “is money”, and any delay in the transfer process puts you at risk of substantial loss. Your conveyancer jumps through all sorts of hoops for you before lodging transfer documents in the Deeds Office and while some steps in the process need cooperation from third parties like bondholders, SARS and the local municipality, others depend on your buyer’s active participation. If the buyer either wants to delay transfer or hasn’t got his/ her ducks in a row, you need rapid corrective action to be taken. Choose a conveyancer you can rely on to move the process along with a minimum of delay. Insist on using the attorney of your own choice The bottom line is that you ultimately carry more risk than the buyer if things go wrong. It is entirely fair therefore that you as the seller have the right to nominate your own attorney to attend to the conveyancing, and it is vital that the sale agreement confirms this unambiguously. The fact that the buyer normally pays the conveyancer (as part of the transfer costs) is irrelevant. There is nothing to stop the buyer from appointing his/her own attorney to monitor the transfer process at his/her own cost, although that is seldom necessary. If a buyer pushes for the appointment of another conveyancer on the basis of discounted fees, remember that any such discount benefits the buyer, not you. Don’t let anyone take away your right to choose your own conveyancer! met Henk Swart, wynmaker by La Couronne
Hoe het jy by La Couronne as wynmaker beland? Meer geluk as wysheid. Ek was vir 20 jaar by Alvi’s Drift Wines in Worcester. Eers as plaasbestuurder, toe assistant wynmaker, toe wynmaker.
Wat is jou uitdagings by La Couronne? Die uitdagings vir my hier is om so gou moontlik vir La Couronne as ‘n winsgewende wyn besigheid te vestig. My eerste pars. Is glasbottels ‘n gewoonte of ‘n noodsaaklikheid? In my opinie sal ek nooit kwaliteit wyn in enige iets anders as glas bottel nie.
Behind the Beautiful Forevers By Katherine Boo. Publ: Random House Paperback. 256 pages. This intriguing and fascinating book was written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning staff writer for The New Yorker. It has as a subtitle “Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity,” and although it is an extended piece of reportage by an accomplished journalist, it is every bit as engrossing and compelling as a novel. The setting is the Annawadi slum next to the Mumbai International Airport, home to thousands of impoverished adults and children, all trying to eke out a living by gathering and recycling garbage. There is an excruciating irony in the never-ending flow of affluent travelers, stepping out of luxurious planes into first-class reception lounges, ignoring the existence, a few meters away, of the abject poverty of the undercity. To the inhabitants of Annawadi the airport exists only as a source of garbage. In fact, most of what we would regard as the simple business of day-to-day life is regarded by the Annawadians as a source of garbage. And most of the rubbish we throw away or discard, they regard as capital. Because garbage is a form of income, it resembles an informally organized capitalist system, a minute variation of giant VISIT OUR WEBSITE

corporations that accumulate and redistribute wealth. A sack of empty plastic cooldrink bottles is relatively worth as much as commission on the sale of a house. Off-cut strips of aluminum window frames from an extension to an airport building are the equivalent of a handful of precious stones as barter. But all of this detail of the business of survival would be worth very little if there was not a human dimension.
Skroefdop.
They came, they saw, they were conquered
Daar is baie persepsies hieroor. Ek lees fiksie, biografieë, geskiedenis, basies enige iets. Selfs Obelix en Asterix. My gunsteling skrywers is seker Wilbur Smith, Winston Churchill, Ranolph Fiennes en Jeffrey Archer. My Beste Boek: The Lord of the Rings My ingewikkeldste boek: Die Bybel en Hamlet My interressantste boek: A Short History of Nearly Everything deur Bill Bryson And this is where the appalling documentary detail is given the dimensions of a novel. A dozen or so characters live their lives in this environment, squabbling, competing, plotting, scheming, but also loving and capable of acts of the greatest generosity. The central figure is Abdul Husain, a 16 year old, old beyond his years, who has achieved a certain position in this society by being a sorter of garbage. He observes his fellow creatures with a certain amount of cynicism and worldly wisdom. Then there is the one-legged prostitute Fatima, who carries out an act of appalling self-destruction so that she can accuse Asha, her comparatively well-off neighbor, of assaulting her. Asha makes her money out of dubious political transactions so that her daughter, the beautiful Manju, can get an education and escape from the slum. Abdul hopelessly gets involved in the case and the police close in on him. The police in this dog-eat-dog world are entirely corrupt and only exist to extract bribes from the population they are supposed to protect. They need to be bribed simply to leave you alone, and if it is your bad luck to appear to commit a crime then it’s simply payday for them. But, because so few people actually have any money and so cannot pay the paltry bribes, they are simply taken to jail until someone can come up with something. The entire book is based on fact and painstaking research. Even the literally incredible trial that ends the book is based on court records and all the names are the names of actual people. Behind the Beautiful Forevers was adapted for the stage by David Hare and performed by the National

On the first day of spring 13 Franschhoekers had a booking to see Jonathan Roxmouth’s Stage by Stage 2 at Theatre on the Bay. Patrick picked them up in a J Davids bus in the village and set off into the sunset to the Theatre on the Bay. What an evening it was! There were no political ponderings or historical high jinks from the stage; all the audience saw and heard was a talented performer in a finely tuned production. Jonathan, admitting that he was passionate about musical theatre, chatted about songs and shows that he loved. It served as introduction to his singing of a selection of songs he had sung or would have liked to sing in productions gone by. His almost two hour performance was effortlessly complemented by his understated acting and comedic talent. The audience gasped at his verbal dexterity and all but rolled in the aisles when he sang The Major General’s Song from The Pirates of Penzance. When he quietly did a beautiful rendition of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables hearts were touched and tears were quietly dabbed away. It was entertainment at its best. One can’t have fun on an empty stomach and the Franschhoek Culture Vultures took care to avoid discomfort by tucking into Olivia’s tasty snacks paired with wine and Cap Classique from Graham Beck. The evening ended back in Franschhoek as a happy group left the bus for their homes. If you would like information on future Franschhoek Culture Vulture outings, please send your name, email address and cell phone number to news@franschhoektatler.co.za Theatre in London very successfully last year. It probably would have seemed to many readers the book least likely to be adapted to the stage. However, if one reads the book carefully, one can see how much intense life there is, sometimes concealed by the social conditions. Boo’s empathy is matched by her imagination and that is why one can read this book as if it were a novel. It is a work of huge moral force.

Pretty Ponies exhibition at IS Art
Artist Nicolene C Swanepoel has a passion for horses which she expresses in her artwork
An exhibition of paintings, drawings, ceramics and bronze sculpture by Nicolene C Swanepoel will run at the IS Art gallery throughout October until 3 November. It is a presentation the artist calls Pretty Ponies saying, “My work for this exhibition rather frivolously paints unencumbered, pretty ponies, rather than serious, embattled steeds.” It is clear from Nicolene C Swanepoel’s work that she has a connection with animals and in this case a particular fondness for horses. She has said, “It is as if there is a genetic tendency in humans to crave their power, to admire their beauty and to ride them.” Nicolene’s involvement with animals has an academic side to it; she lectured at the Faculty of
Veterinary Science, at Onderstepoort, as well as at some European institutions before devoting her time to art on a full-time basis since 2008. Apart from her veterinarian qualification, she has a Masters’ degree in fine art for which her research project was titled Representations of Cattle as Cultural Markers Towards South African Identities. Having previously devoted time to painting and printmaking, Nicolene’s current medium of focus is ceramics. On 24 October the artist will do a walk about of her work in the gallery at 11h00. Gallery hours are from 9h00 to 17h00 on Mondays to Fridays and 10h00 to 17h00 weekends and public holidays. gallery@isart.co.za | 021 876 2071

Aries, 21 March – 19 April: Mars has moved into Virgo and will meet Jupiter there. Your critical and opinionated nature has to be careful how manipulative and pushy it can be, any arguments will get lost in the frivolity of nonsense. Good time for trying to make sense of your status and studying some philosophy or other mind expanding sciences. Taurus, 20 April – 20 May: Those born under this fixed earth sign need to seek balance and harmony in the organization of their immediate environment. This will please their senses and develop taste, refinement and grace. Be romantic, devoted to your loved ones and propagate the idea that everything is love. Gemini, 21 May – 20 June: Mercury is retrograding and fostering rethinking and readjusting. The mutable air sign has an energetic nature seeking change and interchange, motion and invention. This creates nervous, restless and agitated minds. Consider that fact is the illusion of truth and the realization and awareness of truth is the greatest luxury. Cancer, 21 June – 22 July: The cardinal water sign seeks popularity and is sensitive to the moods of the masses, through which they can gain social influence and recognition. Some emotional dependents will create fears and anxieties through narrow mindedness. Use your imagination free of subconscious fixations and allow your confidence and initiative to shine like a full moon. Leo, 23 July – 22 August: The solar plexus of the cosmic person and the fifth sign shows a need for order and harmony, a central will and influence. A refined soul possesses fine principles, excellent virtues and intelligence. The need for too much attention will create rebels against you; spiritual perceptions will develop the greatness of the soul. Virgo, 23 August – 22 September: With Jupiter and Mars in this sign and Mercury in retrograde mood, there is a good chance of over intellectualizing and taking arguments with poor

Exotic Plant Company reopens at Môreson The Exotic Plant Company recently opened the doors their new nursery and flower shop on Môreson farm. The launch took place on Saturday, 4th September, during the Franschhoek Uncorked Festival and coincided with Môreson’s launch of the pink Miss Molly bubbly. Orchid aficionado Elita de Klerk officially cut the ribbon to the new nursery. Like most of the public she confessed to having difficulty remembering the

Libra, 23 September – 22 October: The cardinal air sign and scales of balance are in political orientation with the power to arouse and influence others. They like the idea of being the vehicle of social change and seek that audience. They seek that ever-ideal balance and harmony, even when it causes disharmony to get it! Scorpio, 23 October – 21 November: The fixed water sign prefers to remain behind the scenes. They do not express themselves quickly, not because they are slow but because they are cautious. They have the gift of expressing powerful emotions because of their active unconscious, as long those emotions are clear and pure profound insights are available. Sagittarius, 22 November – 21 December: The archer is the manifestation of the will in action. As long as Sagittarians retain some sense of higher aspirations or an attraction to a spiritual life, their habit of selfindulgence as exercised in a group, will prevent them from not seeing the ‘issues’ of their own limitations. Capricorn, 22 December – 19 January: At this time the cardinal earth sign needs to learn more self-surrender, to take themselves less seriously and to be less concerned about outer forms. Do not be detached from your emotions either by higher intellectual or spiritual values. Sense the quality of time in which you are caught in. Aquarius, 20 January – 18 February: The water bearer indicates the group and the needs of the masses. If you are prone to do what you are told not to do and to befriend those you are told to avoid, the natural energies of providing in the needs of the masses are blocked and dissipated. The water you need to bring is that of truth from your intuitive perception. Pisces, 19 February - 20 March: The impulse of the mutable water sign shows the complete display of all possibilities, but not necessarily their proper integration. To be easily influenced and vulnerable to impressions creates great enthusiastic moments, but sincerity and wisdom is lacking. Attaching yourself to the past through culture does not give enough clarity and practicality. For consultation please write to robert. vedicastrolology@gmail.com or call 073 312 1265
names of many of the exotic flowers! That however is likely to change as owner Mike Tibbs announced that one of their new disa hybrids has been named in her honour. The Bafana Bafana boys have also been honoured with a new Phalaenopsis hybrid that was named after them. Contrary to expectation it’s not green and gold, though, but pink. Very bright pink! The flower shop offers fresh flowers, books, vases, and a range of elegant gifts. Particularly eye catching is a delicate range of handcrafted orchid inspired silver jewellery by Nic Bladen. If you find yourself in a pickle you’ll be happy to know that they will deliver in Franschhoek – also on a Sunday – for free. In addition to a wide range of orchid species and hybrids a selection of other tropical plants and local and imported flowers are also available for sale.

Cancer survivor ensures success for Pearl Valley Despite the odds, Gawie Marx recalls how his biggest adversity in life became a catalyst for renewal, not only in his own life but also in the life of another – his employer. Over the past three years, Pearl Valley Golf & Country Estate has witnessed several significant milestones in its development, indicative of strong, focused leadership at the top. It achieved both Best Conditioned Golf Course in the Western Cape by Golf Digest and Five Star Golf Experience by Compleat Golfer for the seventh consecutive year in 2014, signed South Africa’s leading women’s golfer Lee-Anne Pace as ambassador, and more recently was ranked the Top Residential Estate in South Africa for 2015 by New World Wealth. “Developing and relentlessly pursuing a clear-cut vision for the business, despite what the pessimists were saying at the time, has very much been a part of turning Pearl Valley around,” says general manager Gawie Marx. “Much like my fight with leukemia, I realised that we had to get up and fight.” In November 1997, at just 31 years old, Gawie was diagnosed with acute leukemia. This form of the cancer, which attacks white blood cells, progresses rapidly and aggressively. “Finding out was probably the hardest moment in my life; it was an absolute shock,” Gawie recalls. “But it was followed immediately by a moment of truth: I realised there was no time to waste, that I had to find out as much as I could about the disease, to be able to make the best choices.” Ten months and umpteen hospital stays later, and with the help of his donor brother Johan, Gawie underwent a successful bone-marrow transplant. It was while he was in hospital that he read a story about the World Transplant Games, which would open a door he’d never dreamed of. “I suppose it was at that moment that my disease became my blessing – and it’s something that has become the driving force of what Pearl Valley’s new brand essence stands for,” he says. “Our motto, LivePlay-Relax, implies that sport, in the context of a wellrounded, wholesome, balanced lifestyle, can bring about renewal and ensure success.” In 2001 – the year in which he changed careers after studying for his national diploma in hotel management – Gawie was chosen as part of a 20-member squad to represent South Africa at the World Transplant Games in Japan. Twice in the next eight years, he again represented South Africa, winning a bronze medal in
Gawie and Sonika Marx with their sons, Justin and Grant
the tennis men’s doubles at the Sweden instalment. This year, for the fourth consecutive time, Gawie represented South Africa in the men’s doubles at the 20th World Transplant Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina between 23 and 30 August, winning bronze. It’s an event that crystallised his 17-year journey of recovery, which also saw him marry Sonika, and witness the birth of his twin sons, Justin and Grant. During that time, Gawie occupied managerial positions at Lake Pleasant Hotel and Spa in Knysna, Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in George, and Diaz Strand Hotel and Resort in Mossel Bay. He was director of food and beverage at the Vineyard Hotel and Spa in Newlands, followed by a stint as general manager at the illustrious Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl, before he joined Pearl Valley Golf & Country Estate in November 2010. “From the moment I step out of my office at Pearl Valley after a demanding day, I’m surrounded by an environment where nature is celebrated,” he says. “Apart from the towering mountains, beautiful fynbos and abundant trees, I have access to various excellent recreational facilities, like the Pearl Valley tennis court. It has allowed me to live my dream, and this philosophy has permeated our turnaround strategy and set us on the road to success.” Aside from the endorsement by New World Wealth, an internationally recognised company providing information on the global wealth sector, Pearl Valley has been chosen for its investment potential to become home to a five star development – the Pearl Valley Hotel and conference venue operated by Mantis. The Mantis Collection is a group of award-winning, privately owned, five-star properties, the brainchild of world-renowned hotelier and conservationist Adrian Gardner. www.pearlvalley.co.za | 021 867 8000
