SAN FERNANDO MARKET 1. Research

Given an existing food market in Madrid, Lavapies area, our group of students was asked to explore the market’s atmosphere and structure. While collaborating in pairs, we studied a certain part of the market and did our best to translate all the smells, colours and liveliness of the market to drawings.

SAN FERNANDO MARKET 2. Zooming in

The second stage in the Market project was to ‘zoom in’ and create a custom stall with a specific purpose. My stall sold vegetarian, natural and green foods. After an extensive model iterations period, I worked out a system of revolving wood panels, that, when combined, could create objects and spaces for various purposes and uses. This approach took me to my final designa so-called ‘Cocoon’, or a ‘Green Cave’.

SAN FERNANDO MARKET 3. Zooming out

The last stage in the Market project was to ‘zoom out’ – to concentrate on the surrounding area of the market, take into consideration various internal and external factors, sum up what I have learned since the first steps and redesign the market.

The new market would have:

1) A NEW ENTRANCE 2) A NEW PROGRAM WITHIN A PART OF THE MARKET 3) A NEW FAÇADE

This iteration helped me to combine and realise three important ideas:

1) Cut – open entrance towards the southern park (seen better in the section) I decided to relocate the entrance, so that the market could serve as the connection hub between two public spaces (a park and a square). 2) New program’s relationship to the market. I proposed a MediaLab as the new program, a place where people can learn how to use advanced design tools and collaborate on various design projects.

3) New façade. I generated two layered façade: The interior structural one- vertical panels that repeat all around the building with changing distances; and the exterior light suspended ‘canopy’ façade, made out of stainless steel perforated panels.

The entrance can be demonstrated in this section; I imagined that people would come under the suspended perforated faรงade and find there a stair leading up to the market. After the compressed entrance, the visitors would experience the atrium - plaza, and culminate their journey exiting through the open faรงade on the opposite side.

Raised up entrance and the seating on the inner side of the suspended facade.

Cut - opening of the suspended facade.

ONE ROOM HOUSE He is a botanist and she is a writer.

The main goal of this project was to create a house that would perfectly fit the needs of the imaginary clients as well as satisfy the given area and volume restrictions.

For me, iterating through the models became easier than through drawings; I moved from one model to the next, keeping the concept close to original, but always modifying and transforming the shape of the future house, gradually approximating the most convenient design.

18. 36. 54. HOUSE STUDY Folding.

This project was a study of Daniel Libeskind’s «18.36.54 House ». In order to be able to model the house, I investigated the process of creation of its peculiar form. The concept of the house is a non-uniform ribbon folded over and over again. Hence, I did multiple iterations of the house by folding ribbons of paper.

This allowed me to understand its complex shape and deconstruct it into simple polygonal faces. This house showcases the power and the beauty of one geometrical operation – folding.

OBJECT DESIGN PROJECT From an advertising page:

In our modern metropolitan world most people tend to stick to well-known paths in order to reach their destinations. It is a rational choice: since our time is limited, the shortest ways are usually the well-known ones. However, despite the globalization, there is a still lot of beauty to be discovered. Many places to be seen and become connected to. Please welcome, GIUDE. GIUDE - is everything you need to enjoy the city strolls. The device provides the owner with direction and distance, everything else the traveler figures out him/herself. That’s it! GIUDE’s smooth and flowing design doesn’t disturb from city wandering, while it wraps around a hand in a comfortable manner thanks to its elastic rubber structure. GIUDE is not a guide. Here - you lead.
