DESIGN DESTINATIONS Spring 2017
DESSANA TRIBE “Sons of the Wind” Deep in the Amazon along the Negro River that separates Colombia from Venezuela live the Desana Tribe, an indigenous tribe with a strong relationship with nature who refer themselves as the “Sons of the Wind”. This fascinating tribe maintains their religious beliefs that are expressed in rituals to celebrate life, death and family. The Desana observe the powers of nature and follow astronomical traditions which influence their religious beliefs and ceremonial rituals. The Desana’s have developed an herbal lore, making use of them to look for deeper meaning in their lives, a stronger connection to nature and interpretations to their dreams. Their expression in dance, singing and art forms is the influence of their connection to nature. Their motifs in their designs are culturally coded with reference to marriage rules and fertility concepts. This applied art constitutes a body of visual reminders of how important their cultural truths are. The maximum authority in the Desana are their religious leaders, or Shamans who are the guardian of their traditions, healing, and who exercise control of harvesting strategies with complete understanding of local ecological cycles.

CAPE TOWN, THE MOTHER CITY Cape Town is South Africa’s oldest town and an amazing city that sometimes is referred to as “The Mother City” by locals and visitors. There is no specific reason as to the nickname, and it is simply an affectionate one. However, legend says that in the 1930’s a local newspaper claimed that Cape Town was the only metropolis in South Africa. The people took the word Metropolis as a derivative of the Greek word for Mother and that is just one of the many possible reasons as how the nickname was born. Surrounded by more than 180 miles of coastline touching two of South Africa’s largest bays - Table Bay and False Bay, visitors to the city will encounter some of the world’s most beautiful beaches like Muizenberg and Boulders Beach. The rich and varied landscape of Cape Town’s coastline are perfect to explore the flora and fauna. Cape Town’s scenic beauty lies in its diversity and contrast, from the bustling of the City Center to the landscape that includes the majestic Table Mountain, an iconic image of the city. And just behind the amazing mountain lays the range that includes the Black Table and the Twelve Apostles.

“The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends”. Shirley MacLaine
SHIRLEY MACLAINE - AN AMERICAN LEGEND Shirley MacLaine is a celebrated actress who has received four Oscar nominations and has won one for portraying Aurora Greenway in the 1983 film Terms of Endearment. Shirley has made at least 44 featured films, including The Apartment in 1960 with Jack Lemmon, Postcards from the Edge with Meryl Streep; Steel Magnolias, Sweet Charity, The Turning Point, and Rumor Has It among others. Shirley became even more famous and reached a new generation of fans by playing Martha Levison, the wealthy mother of Cora in the popular TV series Downtown Abbey, a character that defied British traditions. In this role, Shirley mastered the character with a certain brassy elegance giving the characters of the popular show, specially Lady Violet, played by the formidable Maggie Smith, a touch of the liberal attitude of the 1020’s America. A singer, dancer, actress, writer; Shirley MacLaine has graced the big screen (and small screen) for more than fifty years. She is one of Hollywood’s grand dames and a true American Legend.
