Having travelled the world and visited some of our most beautiful cities, I am always asked which is my favorite. That is hard to answer but I do have a top list. My answer is always the same, “It depends.” When it comes to my favorite cities, I always have to go with where I have had the best food since I judge a given place by its quality of food and wine.

LISBON With Something For Everyone Legend has it that Lisboa was founded by Ulysses. The name comes from “Olissipo”, which has its origins in the Phoenician words “Allis Ubbo”, meaning “enchanting port”.
M o s t l i k e l y, i t w a s f o u n d e d b y t h e Phoenicians and styled by the Moors which shows in the strong Arabic influences. It was, after all, ruled by the Moors for 450 years. In the 12th century the Christians reconquered the city, but it was not until the mid-13th century that Lisbon became the country’s capital.
With the beginning of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries, Lisbon emerged as a spice and jewelry trade center.
The breakthrough for Portuguese expansion came in 1498 when Vasco da Gama
8
discovered the sea route to India. This was indeed the beginning of a golden age, characterized by the Manueline architectural style named after King Manuel I, with its typical decorative use of maritime motifs. Over the centuries Lisbon naturally grew and changed. When the city center was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, it was rebuilt by Marquise de Pombal, who thus created the Baixa Pombalina, a commercial area that still retains much of its original layout.
Lisbon is an historic capital, a potpourri of unusual character and charm, where 800 years of cultural influences mingle with modern trends and life styles creating spectacular contrasts.

DUBAI AWE INSPIRING Where else can you find the world's tallest building, largest dancing fountain, largest artificial islands, largest natural flower garden and the biggest indoor snow park? Only in Dubai. A city of contrasts. On the one side, an ultra-modern city and on the other side, a city surrounded with tradition like the Creekside, one of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai, and easily recognizable with its iconic wind towers. It is common to see the contrast of western influence with the traditional middle eastern culture. Considered by many to be the center of the region, this city will inspire her visitors. 17

A Candid Conversation WITH
IGNACIO MAZA
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AT SIGNATURE TRAVEL NETWORK
BY CYNTHIA P. HOWLAND 18
DD: You play a very important role in leading Signature Travel Network into the future. What things are you doing to refine your hotel portfolio to meet the demands of today’s traveler? IM: We are constantly looking at new properties and new destinations worldwide, to stay one step ahead of our clients and their current and future needs. We are also continuously evaluating our privileges for Signature clients – are the benefits relevant and well received? Is there something else we need to offer our clients to raise guest satisfaction? We are also in the process of revamping our consumer website and hotel program microsite, to give our clients more information at their fingertips. DD: What do you want Signature Travel Network to stand for to the traveling public? And to the Agency Community? IM: For our clients: We want to stand for an unwavering commitment to deliver superior customer service – above and beyond. We also aspire to being a trusted advisor to our clients. In addition, we want to ensure we deliver great value to our clients, whether they are staying 1
night in a city hotel, or going around the world in a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Most of all, we want to exceed expectations, every time. For the Travel Agency community – Signature is a family, not a network. Because of our size (197 member agencies) we have a strong and close relationship with agencies affiliated with our network. We are proud to say that Signature has had the strongest retention rate of any travel network in the US for the last 10 years. Our members join, and – for the most part- stay with Signature. For our members, our goal is to provide a high level of support every single day, to deliver effective solutions to enhance our members’ individual businesses, to present a current and relevant portfolio of preferred suppliers and consumer offers that will help our clients meet and exceed the needs of clients, and finally, deliver state-of-the-art technology for members and front-line consultants. DD: Can you tell us a little about the certification program for Signature Travel Experts that you have recently rolled out? How does this translate to customer benefits? IM: The new Signature Expert program is designed to ensure our front line consultants are fully proficient with all the tools and resources available to them, so they can take full advantage of all we have to offer. The response so far has been very strong. I think the more our consultants know about all our consumer offers and services, the more they can do for their clients in terms of value offered, market / offer intelligence, and overall satisfaction. DD: The world of travel is constantly changing and new technology is continually coming online. You have introduced the Digital Magazine, and Pocket Travel Consultant. How else have you integrated digital marketing and online presence into your mix? 19

Ignacio Maza has served as Executive Vice President of Signature Travel Network since he joined the organization in April of 2004. We caught up with Ignacio upon his recent return from China.
DESIGN DESTINATIONS Summer 2015
IM – Signature is proud to have been an industry leader with cutting edge technology for many years running. We are leveraging all our tools to make our consultants more proficient and more effective at point of sale. For example, we have a system that will automatically notify our agents when there is a reduction on a cruise price, after a sale is made. This gives our consultants the edge, as they can offer more value by upgrading for less, or more savings if the client chooses the lower price. As far as marketing, we launched a very successful hotel microsite, which enables our consultants to send over 20,000 pages of proprietary hotel content, to their best clients, in a personalized presentation. We also send out multiple electronic marketing campaigns every week to targeted client lists, to ensure we get the right offer to the right customer at the right time. DD: In this age of instant gratification, consumers have many options to book and shop online. What things are you and your organization doing to help your agent network compete, bring value, and stay relevant? IM: to help our members compete – we are constantly updating our technology and marketing, to make them as effective and powerful as possible; we enhance our preferred portfolio of products every year, with new hotels, new partners, new resources on the ground, new cruise ships and land itineraries; we are also rolling out more training program – everything from webinars to in-destination training to unique workshops that will help our members stay ahead of the curve; and finally, provide our members with ongoing service that will help our front line close sales and drive client satisfaction,. DD: Let’s talk about destinations. I see you have recently returned from China. What
20
destinations top your “bucket list” today? What makes a great destination to you? What emerging destinations are you recommending these days? IM: I don’t like the term ‘bucket list’, but I do keep a list of places in my mind that I want to visit. Right now, I think about (in no particular order) Iceland, Ethiopia, the Canadian Rockies, Bhutan, the Maldives, the Bolivian Altiplano, Myanmar, and 100 other places. Great destinations to me are unique, special, one of a kind, memorable places that offer special experiences that I will treasure always. Places I recommend that come to mind: Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Chile’s Patagonia and Atacama regions, Colombia’s coffee country, less popular European cities such as Bruges, Seville, Siena, Marseille, Oporto and Helsinki; The American Southwest – especially Southern Utah, Northern Arizona and Santa Fe, as well as Botswana, India’s Rajasthan region, Laos, Kyoto, Sri Lanka, Vancouver island, and Marrakesh. DD: You have spent the better part of your career in travel and tourism. Where were you born and how did that, if at all, shape your love and commitment to travel? IM: I was born in Havana, Cuba, and started traveling when I was very young. My father worked for an American multinational company, so we moved every couple of years from country to country. All this moving around at an early age made a big impression on me and made me want to see the world. DD: Do you remember when, and where you were when you first realized travel was going to be your future and your passion? IM – I got on an airplane when I was four, and when we took off, I was sold on travel.
Austin Abram Born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California, Austin Abram moved to New York City and joined In the Know Experiences in 2011 after graduating from Villanova University. Her passion for travel began at a young age and was put to use during college as she planned weekend getaways while studying abroad in London. It was this semester in London that cemented her love for travel and the belief that a career in the travel industry would be the absolute perfect fit. Unaware that travel agents still existed, a career in travel seemed unlikely until she was introduced to Lia Batkin and Seth Kaplan, who were in search of an assistant. Four years later, Austin continues to work for Lia and Seth, where she focuses on their international, entertainment, and high end leisure clientele.
Xavier Cano Xavier’s two greatest passions are theater and travel. In fact, it is his love of theater and career as an actor that originally afforded him the opportunity to travel all over the world. Living in NYC for the past 8 years, and after juggling between theater gigs on Broadway (Grease) and Off-Broadway (Rent, Giant, Lucky Guy), he has found a home base for his skills at SmartFlyer leading Strategic Partnerships and Vendor Relations. Working with the Managing Director, Xavier is responsible for helping develop and maintain the myriad of vendors and partners that engage with SmartFlyer across the globe. With impeccable attention to detail, a keen eye for design and a love for adventure, culture and food, he naturally has started consulting on travel and planning trips worldwide, finding it has only fueled his love of travel.

Lush tropical mountains meet a crystal green sea and golden sand beaches. A city that gave the world the exotic sounds of the Samba. A city that is on a constant enviable rhythm and where its people seem to live life to the fullest. In 2015 Rio de Janeiro, marks the 450th anniversary of its founding. It was named by the Portuguese who mistakenly thought that the large Guanabara Bay was the mouth of a river and later became the capital of Brazil until 1960. ETTA JAMES - AN AMERICAN LEGEND Winner of four Grammys and seventeen Blues Music Awards. In 1993 she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, in 2001 into the Blues Hall of Fame, and in 1999 into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Etta James was known as “The Matriarch of the Blues” and her voice captivated the world. When she sang she touched the soul and as David Ritz, who wrote a biography of James, said ”It isn't like she sings that song, sometimes, you feel she was going to war with the song.”
Discovered at 14, the foster-home runaway had her first hit, with the girl group The Peaches. Back then, "Roll With Me Henry" was deemed too racy for radio. Before her 18th birthday, she was signed to a record label and started touring. In 1961 she released
“At Last” and the song became her signature song for which most people remember her.
Rolling Stone Magazine ranked her #62 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Etta James died in 2012.
