OIA SANTORINI PHOTOS BY GIANLUCA FAZIO TEXT BY FRANCISCO RUANO
Oia, previously known as Apano Meria, meaning “upper side", is sometimes referred to by locals as Pano Meria. The Ancient Greek Oia was one of the two harbors of ancient Thera and was located in the southeast of the island, where Kamari is now. Oia reached the peak of prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its economic prosperity was based on its merchant fleet, which plied trade in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially from Alexandria to Russia. The twostory captains' houses built on the highest part of the village are a reminder of the village's former affluence.
Oia has been the location of many films including the 1982 film Summer Lovers. and movies The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. This picturesque village was also featured in the opening sequences of the film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, starring Angelina Jolie.
Visitors enjoy the narrow streets and the white painted homes with blue doors and railing, however, there are other interesting findings that visitors should not miss such as Sigalas, the award winning winery and restaurant or the unique Mnemossyne Gallery that features a variety of fine art photography and jewelry, all astonishingly handmade by local artists. The gallery has a very harmonic atmosphere in an elegant cave house located only a few steps before the Castle and the famous sunset spot in Oia.

Barranquilla's Carnival is one of Colombia's most important folkloric celebrations, and one of the biggest carnivals in the world. The carnival has traditions that date back to the 19th century. Four days before Easter, Barranquilla decks itself out to receive national and foreign tourists and joins together with locals to enjoy four days of intense festivities. During the carnival, Barranquilla's normal activities are paralyzed giving way to street dances, musical and masquerade parades. Many styles of Colombian music are performed during the days of the festival including Colombia’s most prominent dance, the “cumbia”. The Carnival of Barranquilla was proclaimed a Cultural Masterpiece of the Nation by Colombia's National Congress in 2002. Also the UNESCO, in Paris on November 7, 2003, declared it one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The Carnival starts on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday with the highlight of the Carnival, the battle of the flowers, followed by The Great Parade on Sunday. On Monday music takes over with many bands playing. Tuesday signals the end of the carnival, announced by the burial of Joselito Carnaval, a folk character who represents and symbolizes the merrymaking, the disorder, the collective joy, and any element of subversion of the rules associated with King Momo: "Son of the dream and of the night that presided over the feasts of the crazy, celebrated in towns, villages and cities”. The burial of Joselito ends the carnival and all the festivities of the last day are set around the funeral.
The Barranquilla Carnival has been claimed to be the second largest carnival in the world, surpassed only by Rio de Janeiro.

SCOTTY GRAHAM Scotty Graham is an American photographer living in Indonesia with his wife and daughters. Scotty has been a contributor to Design Destinations Magazine since the beginning and images of his beautiful photography have graced the covers of our magazine. His images are captivating, beautiful and transport the viewer. We reached out to Scotty and asked him to provide us with ten of his favorite images for this article and his response was “I have over a hundred thousand photos from all over the world. How in the world does one choose their favorite ten shots?? I am sure I left out so many good shots, but I wanted to give you a variety of shots....I couldn't narrow these down to just 10”. Like Scotty, we found that choosing ten images was very difficult, so we went with a selection that stood out from the many that we saw and we hope that you enjoy them.

Flatiron Building, New York: “This is my favorite building in NYC. The clouds that afternoon really complete the shot”.
Bodie: A ghost town in Northern California. I love old abandoned buildings. The stormy clouds behind this old ghost town house is icing on the cake.
Sorido Sunset: Raja Ampat - West Papua Indonesia ”I don’t know how many hours I have sat in a bean bag chair looking at this scene. Every day and night it looks different. This was one of my favorite sunsets”.
Flower Market: Guatemala. “I just loved the atmosphere, colors and people in this market.
Ladakh: “One of the most spectacular long treks I have done. On most days, we experienced the four seasons in one day. This shot was coming down from a 5000 meter pass.
Jakarta: “I like this shot because it is so typically Jakarta (where I live). The textures, bird cages, and the guy eating his Mie Goreng make the photo.
Pulau Padar in Komodo, Indonesia. “From the water, it looks like just a small hill...nothing special...but when you climb the trail to the top, the view is like no other view in the world. The guy in the photo was about to step down from the rock, but I yelled down to him to stay as it gave the photo more scale.
Bogor, Indonesia. “I just really like this shot.

Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca Emperor Pachacuti (1438– 1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas" (a title more accurately applied to Vilcabamba), it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of how they originally appeared. By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored and restoration continues today.
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.

AN AMERICAN LEGEND
JESSICA LANGE
Jessica Lange was born in 1949 in Cloquet, Minnesota, where her father worked as a traveling salesman. Jessica’s artistic talent earned her a scholarship to study art at the University of Minnesota, but she instead went to Paris to study drama. After her studies in France, she returned to New York, and began a career as a model. Famous producer and director Dino De Laurentiis discovered her and cast her as the female lead in the 1976 version of King Kong. The film received unfavorable reviews and Ms. Lange retreated for almost three years until her return in a small art in Bob Fosse’s 1979 film All That Jazz. In 1981, she gave a memorable performance in Bob Rafelson’s film The Postman Always Rings Twice where she portrayed an adulterous waitress. The following year, she won rave reviews for her exceptional portrayal of actress Frances Farmer in Frances (1982) and on the same year, she earned a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her work in Sydney Pollack's Tootsie (1982) along side Dustin Hoffman playing a beautiful soapopera actress. She was also outstanding as country singer Patsy Cline in Karel Reisz's Sweet Dreams (1985) and as a lawyer who defends her father and discovers his past in Music Box (1989). Other important films include Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear (1991) (as a frightened housewife) and Tony Richardson's Blue Sky (1994), for which she won a Best Actress Academy Award as the mentally unbalanced wife of a military officer. She made her Broadway debut in 1992, playing "Blanche" in Tennessee Williams "A Streetcar Named Desire”. Today, Jessica is a favorite actor of a new generation of fans due to her performance in the acclaimed television series American Horror Stories where she has played the leading role in all except one season.
