CALIBRATING COUNTRY 19/03/2018

Aim Map an interesting data pattern around Darwin NT. Method Collecting data from radio interviews, podcasts, community and Government land care objectives and settlement maps Calibrating Country Drawing Calibrating Country maps the Larrakia nations fishing regions, mapped against Darwin’s historical coast line and wet areas. Included are the culturally significant and sacred sites around metropolitan Darwin. To assume the fishing information I referenced historical maps of Darwin pre-urbanisation and cross-referenced this information with public documents that detail the habits and techniques of the Larrakia people. CALIBRATING COUNTRY 2.0 09/04/2018

Aim Study the fishing habits and regions of the contemporary Darwin population, boat ramps, and native fish populations. Method Calibrating Country maps the GPS fishing locations publicised by local fishers. This data is referenced back to public boat ramps to track probable boat routes and against the NT government data on native fish population. This map then attempts to understand the areas and habits that were most likely used for fishing in the nation. Included in the map is the prediction of areas that were most likely fished by the Larrakia Nation. To assume this information I referenced historical maps of Darwin pre-urbanisation and cross-referenced this information with public documents that detail the habits and techniques of the Larrakia people. Observations - Patterns presented themselves from understanding the boat paths taken to GPS locations. - These patterns originated at localised boat ramps. This map disregards land fishing areas. Thin Ice Speculations - These paths and points could potentially inform zoning areas in the Darwin master plan or road networks. THIN ICE 2.0 10/04/2018 Aims To input the data gathered in the Calibrating Country Drawing into a grasshopper script. Method - Scripted the fishing points with a spin force script - Iterated the charge, decay and step values Thin Ice Experiments Using an abstract form generated by the scripting of the data in the Calibrating Country drawing, the Thin Ice experiments provoke potential patterns for Darwin’s Urban Plan for 2050. Results See over page Observations Branching Script Used basic branching script against data in maps. Generated mundane outcome that when pushed only filled in black. Fields Art Script Used spin-force components over the fishing data. Generated a beautiful outcome however further iterations remained constant. Vector Field Script Input fishing data into point charge components. Generated beautiful outcomes, further iterations became more powerful, eventually broke the script. Potentially redo, incorporating Fields Art. Grid Tearing 1.0 Only referencing the fish population, didn’t provide the best outcome. Grid Tearing 2.0 Including all the data, the outcome started off poorly however through iterations proved rather successful. 3D Volumes Using Curves Iterations of this script proved sporadic and interesting. Pushing the volumes away from the curves created a cloud which from different perspectives appeared poetic. Thinner Ice Speculations The outcome is blurry and could be refined by combining it with an iteration of the Fields Art Script. The combination could provide a solid base for the urban plan Appendix http://www.designcoding.net/vector-field-basics/ https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3ZxkoiW1FRwRHdZZWlaalU2WW8/view http://www.designcoding.net/grid-tearing-basic/ http://www.designcoding.net/fields-art/ https://explodebreps.wordpress.com/grasshopper-definitions/extruded-voronoi-with-connection/ http://www.grasshopper3d.com/ https://nt.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/240319/rapid-creek-planning-concepts-and-land-use-objectives.pdf http://www.abc.net.au/local/audio/2012/07/03/3537685.htm http://www.abc.net.au/local/audio/2012/07/02/3536791.htm http://www.abc.net.au/local/audio/2012/07/06/3540206.htm

reflection

Fidelity has been undoubtedly the hardest studio I have undertaken at in my architectural studies so far. The sheer time and effort I put into this project alone comfortably surpasses my accumulated commitment throughout my undergraduate degree. Having transitioned from Curtin University in Perth to RMIT, I have had to drastically re-evaluate my thought process and habitual reflexes for the design process, to meet the standards set here, while embracing the Emma Jackson attitudes to architecture and design. The abstract process we followed for this studio has allowed me to better appreciate detachment from the tunnelled perspective of the traditional “hero” architects methodology. I have new found respect for the data and code that can be read and extrapolated from precedents and inspirations taken from the site. The process opened my eyes to a litany of unseeable outcomes, journeys and possibilities that a traditional design process would unknowingly miss or overlook. My appreciating of the methodology stems from their ability to deliver a considerably more experimental, dramatic and most importantly conscious outcome that has the potential to far better serve the inhabitants. The method and benefits of analysing design inspiration as code and data directly correlate with the intensity and profoundly more abundant observable answers. Unbiased mapping one aspect of the site through the Calibrating Country task was an excellent strategy to consider an area holistically in relation to specific behaviour that exists. The nature of the intention provided us with the ability to study the data present and project it without relative distraction and contamination. Our specific behaviours become the sole input to the process and this results in the outcomes retaining a code of simplicity. Breaking the moulds and the data in the Thin and Thinner Ice tasks projected that simple code to unreachable limits and produced a data set that couldn’t be gained from analysing the code as form. An incredibly abstract and inventive process that I hope to follow and press further in my career. Studying the local behaviour and lifestyles from a distance was difficult, only having the resources of maps made it challenging to read into the nuances of the Darwin life. This however provided an unbias nature in our Predator task. our goal of mapping and coding a particular interaction allowed us to prioritise that behaviour and gave us an increase data set to add to our urban plan. this process works well because the new urban form directly stems from both the original Calibrating Country data cross-referenced with the interaction data from the Predator Task. Coding the data with heat signatures is a simple yet effective way to diagram the important relations that occur at the site. Reflecting on the next stage seems a blur to me. over the following weeks, we slowly redrew and refined smaller areas of our diagrams and urban fabric to begin to visualise minute examples of life as we imagine it to occur in the new city. difficult and contesting most of the time, clashing and redefining urbanity from data was challenging, especially as the data often didn’t appear the same more than twice. I believe this is where the process of only breaking down one aspect comes to value. releasing yourself from creating a rigid metropolis allows the future inhabitants to innovate and personalise the spaces instead of just adapting to the new orders we’ve prescribed them. I think this allowance for change in a design is critical as a could prevent a disastrous future built environment. Holistically I believe this process, while abstract, reveals unattainable outcomes that a traditional design process would overlook and fail to consider. the depth at which we analysed the data and produced alternative definitions yielded a creativity I didn’t think I was capable of.
