FRASERS PROPERTY AUSTRALIA. SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY.
A DIFFERENT WAY.
Caring for the wellbeing of our communities.
Geothermal heating and cooling.
Frasers Property Australia is rising to the challenge of creating a fitter, healthier and happier Australia by partnering with Live Life Get Active, to roll out camps across several of our communities, championed by former Olympian Jane Flemming.
The installation of innovative sustainable technology in our developments reflects our commitment to A Different Way. Fairwater, a residential community in Western Sydney, was NSW’s first development to achieve a 6 Star Green Star Communities rating, Australia’s highest possible sustainability recognition, representing ‘World Leadership’.
The Live Life Get Active program includes free daily group fitness sessions and healthy eating nutrition plans and is available to the whole community, not just residents of our developments. This program helps build communities while taking advantage of the beautiful public open spaces in the communities we have developed.
Fairwater boasts an innovative geothermal heating and cooling system. This technology is predicted to save residents up to $500 a year in energy costs, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This innovation was awarded the Weapons of Mass Creation award at the 2016 Green Cities Conference.
Frasers Property has also engaged a Community Development Officer for a number of our developments to promote community ownership and ensure residents have opportunities for genuine consultation about decisions that affect their lives.
We are also installing geothermal technology in our industrial facilities.
The Ponds Shopping Centre, Kellyville Ridge, NSW.
The Green, Parkville, VIC.
The Ponds Shopping Centre was Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star Retail Centre, representing ‘World Leadership’.
The Green is a five-storey apartment building in Parkville, Victoria, with an innovative construction method made with wood rather than concrete.
The Ponds Shopping Centre, which opened in May 2015, completed the award winning master-planned community, The Ponds. Frasers Property worked collaboratively with UrbanGrowth and the City of Blacktown to ensure we developed a retail centre which met the community’s amenity needs, while providing exceptional design outcomes.
Faced with the rising costs of medium rise apartments in Melbourne’s inner suburbs, Frasers Property pioneered a cost effective construction solution. A unique Multi-Level Timber Construction (MLTC) method was used.
Sustainability was a key focus of this project, and highlights include a solar PV system, LED lighting, a naturally ventilated mall that reduces the need for heating and cooling, full lifecycle analysis to reduce the embodied energy, and rainwater reuse. These innovations have resulted in an estimated operating saving of $45,000 per annum. The Ponds Shopping Centre has been certified with a 6 Star Green Star Retail Centre Design v1 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia—the first time any retail development in Australia has achieved this rating, which represents ‘World Leadership’.
By storing carbon, timber is one of the most sustainable building materials and The Green had a significant reduction in embodied energy comparable to a concrete building. Frasers Property is committed to a sustainable supply chain. 81% of the timber used was Australian sourced and plantation certified. Additionally, due to the dramatic reduction in material weight and the modular design, faster construction times and improved safety during construction was possible. Following the success of The Green, Frasers Property is rolling out MLTC on other projects.
OUR CHANGING WORLD DEMANDS A DIFFERENT WAY OF DOING THINGS.
Sustainability isn’t just about the environment. It’s about creating communities and places that help real people live, play, shop and work in better ways.
Paolo Bevilacqua General Manager, Sustainability
Our aim is to create safe, healthy, efficient places for people to live, work and play. We’re constantly innovating and improving our approach so we can do even more. A Different Way is our overarching sustainability strategy. It helps us deliver better outcomes, and achieve our goal of making a real difference when it comes to sustainability. It identifies the issues that affect us—both now and in the future—and outlines the steps we need to take to get great results. A Different Way will help us create smarter and more innovative spaces and places. It is already leading to lower utilities bills for our clients, access to more affordable choices, and safer, healthier and more connected environments in which to live, work and play. For instance, by incorporating renewable energy sources—such as geothermal heating and cooling—into our developments, we can help cut potential emissions and ensure our customers enjoy lower energy costs all year round. And by 2018, it’s our goal that all our new developments and properties will have Green Star certification. By focusing on finding A Different Way, we are becoming a more resilient and responsible business, presenting our customers with far more opportunities, and creating better outcomes for people and the planet.
To achieve our goals, we have focused A Different Way on three core areas. Each area is supported by ambitious goals and targets that pinpoint how we plan on making a difference.
