Grand Huts and the Fraser Valley Rec District invite you to join a Naturalist program to be held at the Broome Hut on the 4th Saturday of June, July and August. Join naturalists for a fun, free and informative program to be held between 12:00 - 1:00pm. Topics will include the mountains and physical environment, glacial geology, alpine ecology, plants and animals of the subalpine forest and some local history. Simply meet on the hut patio by 11:45am on the day of the program. The volunteer naturalist will be on site to answer questions from 10:00am - 2:00pm. Come prepared for any weather and don’t forget the 10 essentials in your pack! (Bring drinking water - NO potable water source.) The Broome hut sits in the beautiful Second Creek basin at 11,350 ft. The trailhead is located at mile marker 240 on the west side of Berthoud Pass. The hike is 1 mile with an 800 ft. elevation gain, up a beautiful, well defined, subalpine trail that is suitable for all ages. Please note that dogs are not allowed at the Broome Hut. We work with the Forest Service to discourage dogs in this over-used basin, and the cabin is adjacent to the Vasquez Wilderness where dogs must be on a leash. If your furry friends joins you for the hike, please do not allow them to harass wildlife.

9:00A-10:30A $45/$50

High Altitude Gardening Basics - Parent/Child Garden Classes

Do you struggle to get your kids to eat their veggies? Are you frustrated finding wholesome food options in the Fraser Valley? Are you in possession of a black thumb rather than a green one? Have the deer and other 4-legged creatures annihilated your attempts to garden? Fear no more‌If kids grow it themselves, they will be enthusiastic about eating what they grow. There is no better way to control your food source than to grow it yourself. Wonderful fresh produce can be grown in the Fraser Valley. Learn how, and in the process, make your family table a healthy and happy one. Let the seeds you sow together make a lifetime impression on your children. Fee is for parent and child for all eight weeks. Please bring your own garden tools. Soil is provided, please purchase seeds and transplants after first class. Youngsters that are interested in getting more comfortable in the water are invited to join the entry level of the After School Swim Club. The group is meant for kids in the skill levels of 1-3 in the Learn to Swim program. We encourage that all participants be comfortable in the water and prefer that they have done at least one session of regular swimming lessons; however, this is not a requirement. The sessions are one hour in length, with the last 15 to 10 minutes set aside for play! There is a little of everything: Stroke Refinement, Personal Survival, Team Games, Buoyancy and Diving and the always popular playtime! Each session will be a different game to pique the participants interest. During the course, sessions will seek to improve the basic strokes and water skills as well as introduce more advanced techniques with safety and confidence in the water remaining a priority. Functional Movement Screen

The Functional Movement Screen is an assessment that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. By assessing these patterns, the FMS identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness. The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns. The FMS score is used to track progress and identify those exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength.
